• New Release of ROracle posted to CRAN

  Oracle recently updated ROracle to version 1.1-2 on CRAN with enhancements and bug fixes. The major enhancements include the introduction of Oracle Wallet Manager and support for datetime and interval types.  Oracle Wallet support in ROracle allows users to manage public key security from the client R session. Oracle Wallet allows passwords to be stored and read by Oracle Database, allowing safe storage of database login credentials. In addition, we added support for datetime and interval types when selecting data, which expands ROracle's support for date data.  See the ROracle NEWS for the complete list of updates. We encourage ROracle users to post questions and provide feedback on the Oracle R Forum. In addition to being a high performance database interface to Oracle Database from R for general use, ROracle supports database access for Oracle R Enterprise.

  As a company we now have Facebook, LinkedIN, Twitter and now Google+, is there a way to easily manage all these accounts without having to log into them individually? Things like posting content to each one is becoming a full time job in itself, is there a way to post once that in turn posts to all other accounts? I used to use http://ping.fm/ a long time ago, has there been any advancements in something similar to this? With friend lists, news feeds etc etc for each one, I wish there was a way to manage them all in one place with a service/tool!

  I have always liked how SfTS works, and the functionality it offers.  In an earlier assessment I wrote of their toolset, the only issue I had encountered was the migration of environment that had been created and worked on for a while in the TFS 2008 world using SfTS 2.0 to the TFS 2010 SfTS 3.0.  There were several elements (Work Items and such) that were not moving correctly. Anyway, that is now in the past! Congratulations to Crispin Parker and Team for the release of the Migration Tool. • Donald Ferguson says end-user programming is next big thing. Is it?

  You can guess how I came to ask this question... Anyway : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11944966 Donald Ferguson claiming that his websphere was his biggest disaster and proclaiming that end-user programming will be the way forward. This genuinely spurs the question : what with current programming languages. Honestly, I don't think that end-user programming will go much beyond a rather rigid template where you can build some apps around. If you see how many people actually manage to understand the basic functionality of functions in EXCEL... Plus, I fail to see how complex and performant systems can be built in such an end-user programming language ( Visual Basic, anyone?) Nice to play around with, but for many applications they're just not the thing. So no worries for the old languages if you ask me. What's your ideas?

  Twitter the micro blogging site crossed the ten billions milestone on 4th of this month as per the report by GigaTweet (Site which tracks the number of tweets posted on twitter) The person who sent the 10 billionth tweet is still unknown as his profile is protected. But the 9,999,999,999th tweet was sent by one Rafaela Marques from Brazil. AS you can see GigaTweet expects just another 196 days to reach the 20 billionth marks if tweet continues with the current pace. Some of the interesting statics about rate in which people tweeted every year 2007 – 5000 tweets per day 2008 – 300,000 tweets per day 2009 – 2.5 million per day It reached an average of 35 million tweets per day by end  2009. • R2 and Idera Idera SQL Safe (Freeware Edition)

  Good news: the Freeware edition of Idera SQL Safe works on R2. You might not care but I certainly do. Here's why:  In September last year I started using Idera SQL Safe (the Freeware Edition) to get backup compression on my SQL 2005 servers. It seemed like a good idea at the time - it was free and my backups ran much faster and took up much less disk space. I really thought I'd actually scored a free lunch. Until they discontinued the product. I was thinking about what to do when I heard that R2 Standard would include native backup compression so I've just been keeping my fingers crossed since then. So I installed R2 Developer on my laptop, installed SQL Safe and kicked off a restore with it. No problem. Phew! Now I won't have to do a special, non-compressed backup and restore when we migrate.

• Entity Framework 4.0: Optimal and horrible SQL

  Lately I had Entity Framework 4.0 session where I introduced new features of Entity Framework. During session I found out with audience how Entity Framework 4.0 can generate optimized SQL. After session I also showed guys one horrible example about how awful SQL can be generated by Entity Framework. In this posting I will cover both examples. Optimal SQL Before going to code take a look at following model. There is class called Event and I will use this class in my query. Here is the LINQ To Entities query that uses small anonymous type. var query = from e in _context.Events             select new { Id = e.Id, Title = e.Title }; Debug.WriteLine(((ObjectQuery)query).ToTraceString()); Running this code gives us the following SQL. SELECT      [Extent1].[event_id] AS [event_id],      [Extent1].[title] AS [title]  FROM [dbo].[events] AS [Extent1] This is really small – no additional fields in SELECT clause. Nice, isn’t it? Horrible SQL Ayende Rahien blog shows us darker side of Entiry Framework 4.0 queries. You can find comparison betwenn NHibernate, LINQ To SQL and LINQ To Entities from posting What happens behind the scenes: NHibernate, Linq to SQL, Entity Framework scenario analysis. In this posting I will show you the resulting query and let you think how much better it can be done. Well, it is not something we want to see running in our servers. I hope that EF team improves generated SQL to acceptable level before Visual Studio 2010 is released. There is also morale of this example: you should always check out the queries that O/R-mapper generates. Behind the curtains it may silently generate queries that perform badly and in this case you need to optimize you data querying strategy. Conclusion Entity Framework 4.0 is new product with a lot of new features and it is clear that not everything is 100% super in its first release. But it still great step forward and I hope that on 12.04.2010 we have new promising O/R-mapper available to use in our projects.
