• Java redirected system output to jtext area, doesnt update until calculation is finished

  I have code that redirects system output to a jtext area, but that jtextarea doesnt update until the code is finished running.   Hello everyone, I'm trying to bind a Label's 'Content' property to a property from some custom type I have; unfortunately, I didn't figure out how to do it, and that's why I'm here :) Let's assume that I have the following type (can be in the same namespace as my WPF Window that contains the Label or different namespace): namespace MyNS { pubic class Person { private int age = 0; public int Age { get { return age; } } public void GetOlder { age++; } } } 1) How to I bind my Label to 'Age' property? 2) At runtime I will create an instance of 'Person'; I want to make sure that my Label is bound to the right instance; i.e. if I called: Person SomePerson = new Person(); SomePerson.GetOlder(); I want my Lable to have the new value of 'Age' property for 'SomePerson'. 3) If #2 was possible (I hope so), what if I called 'GetOlder' in different thread? • Value types of variable size

  I'm trying to code a small math library in C#. I wanted to create a generic vector structure where the user could define the element type (int, long, float, double, etc.) and dimensions. My first attempt was something like this... public struct Vector<T> { public readonly int Dimensions; public readonly T[] Elements; // etc... } Unfortunately, Elements, being an array, is also a reference type. Thus, doing this, Vector<int> a = ...; Vector<int> b = a; a[0] = 1; b[0] = 2; would result in both a[0] and b[0] equaling 2. My second attempt was to define an interface IVector<T>, and then use Reflection.Emit to automatically generate the appropriate type at runtime. The resulting classes would look roughly like this: public struct Int32Vector3 : IVector<T> { public int Element0; public int Element1; public int Element2; public int Dimensions { get { return 3; } } // etc... } This seemed fine until I found out that interfaces seem to act like references to the underlying object. If I passed an IVector to a function, and changes to the elements in the function would be reflected in the original vector. What I think is my problem here is that I need to be able to create classes that have a user specified number of fields. I can't use arrays, and I can't use inheritance. Does anyone have a solution? EDIT: This library is going to be used in performance critical situations, so reference types are not an option.

  I am attempting to run Xstream in a netbeans proof of concept project. I have the following code. This breaks at the Add-Type with this error message for each get/set in the file. 'MyApp.VM.MyClassVM.CtrId.get' must declare a body because it is not marked abstract or extern Any info on what I'm doing wrong will be greatly appreciated.

• Efficiently get the size of a parameter pack up to a certain index

  I want to be able to determine the number of bytes that are in a subset of a parameter pack from 0 to a given index. Right now I'm using a non-constexpr way of doing this. What's a less expensive way of doing this?

• Obj-c method override/polymorphism problem

  Ok, so I'm using Objective-C. Now, say I have: TopClass : NSObject - (int) getVal {return 1;} MidClass : TopClass - (int) getVal {return 2;} BotClass : MidClass - (int) getVal {return 3;} I then put objects of each type into an NSMutableArray and take one out. What I want to do is run the getVal func on the appropriate object type, but when I put id a = [allObjects objectAtIndex:0]; if ([a isKindOfClass:[TopClass class]]) { int i; i = [a getVal]; } I get firstly a warning about multiple methods called getVal (presumably because the compiler can't determine the actual object type until runtime). But more seriously I also get an error "void value not ignored as it should be" and it won't compile. If I don't try and use the return from [a getVal] then it compiles fine e.g. [a getval]; //obviously no good if I want to use the return value It will also work if I use isMemberOfClass statements to cast the object to a class before running the function e.g. if ([a isMemberOfClass:[BotClass]) i = [(BotClass*) a getVal]; But surely I shouldn't have to do this to get the functionality I require? Otherwise I'll have to put in a statement for every single subclass, and worse have to add a new line if I add a new sub class, which rather defeats the point of method overriding doesn't it? Surely there is a better way?

• Developing Modular Flex Applications

  Hi there I'd like to be able to understand how to develop a Flex application such that I could provide implementation classes at runtime. In the Java world I'd specify interfaces in an JAR (e.g. myapp-api.jar), the implementation in a separate JAR (e.g. myapp-impl.jar) and package these along with other resources in the application WAR (e.g. myapp.war). Within the code of the application I would instantiate the implementation classes dynamically. Is this approach possible in Flex? I'm aware that I can instantiate classes dynamically so that's a good start. I'm a bit confused by modules, RSLs and SWCs though. I was hoping to create a SWF application that had references to an interfaces SWC and an implementation SWC. The idea is that if I need to tweak the application for a specific customer then I could create a new implementation SWC and not have to modify the SWF or interface SWC. Any ideas?

  In a database application (using Sql Server right now, in C#, with Entity Framework 4.0) I have a situation where I need to trigger events when some values change. For instance assume a class "Trackable". class Trackable { string Name { get; set; } int Positive { get; set; } int Negative { get; set; } int Total { get; set; } // event OnChanged } Trackable is represented in the database as follows; table Trackables Id | guid name | varchar(32) positive | int negative | int Total is of course, calculated at runtime. When a trackable event changes, I want to inspect its previous value, and then see what it is changing to, and be capable of reacting accordingly. However different trackables need to trigger different events (to avoid a huge, massive cascading switch/if block). If this were just only C# code it would be easy - but they have to be saved to the database. I can't divide up each different trackable into a different table/class, that would be silly - they are all identical, but the event raised is different based on how they are made. So I guess my question is, is there any way to store an event handler in a database such that.. • Tell me again why we need both .NET and Windows? Why can't Windows morph into the CLR?

  The same way DOS morphed into Windows? We seem to have ended up supporting and developing for three platforms from Microsoft, and I'm not sure where the boundaries are supposed to lie. Why can't the benefits of the CLR (such as type safety, memory protection, etc.) be built into Windows itself? Or into the browser? Why an entirely other virtual machine? (How may levels of virtual machine indirection are we dealing with now? We just added Silverlight - and before that Flash - running inside the Browser running inside maybe a VM install...) I can see raw Windows for servers, but why couldn't there be a CLR for workstations talking directly to the hardware (or at least not the whole Windows legacy ball and chain)? (ooppp - I've got two questions here. Let's make this - why can't .net be built into Windows? I understand about backward compatibility - but the safety of what's in .NET could be at least optionally in Windows itself, couldn't it? It would just be yet another of many sets of APIs?) Factoid - I recall that one of the competitor architectures selling against MS-DOS on the IBM PC was UCSD-pascal runtime - a VM.

• Checking if a function has C-linkage at compile-time [unsolvable]

  Is there any way to check if a given function is declared with C-linkage (that is, with extern "C") at compile-time? I am developing a plugin system. Each plugin can supply factory functions to the plugin-loading code. However, this has to be done via name (and subsequent use of GetProcAddress or dlsym). This requires that the functions be declared with C-linkage so as to prevent name-mangling. It would be nice to be able to throw a compiler error if the referred-to function is declared with C++-linkage (as opposed to finding out at runtime when a function with that name does not exist). Here's a simplified example of what I mean: extern "C" void my_func() { } void my_other_func() { } // Replace this struct with one that actually works template<typename T> struct is_c_linkage { static const bool value = true; }; template<typename T> void assertCLinkage(T *func) { static_assert(is_c_linkage<T>::value, "Supplied function does not have C-linkage"); } int main() { assertCLinkage(my_func); // Should compile assertCLinkage(my_other_func); // Should NOT compile } Is there a possible implementation of is_c_linkage that would throw a compiler error for the second function, but not the first? • Best Methods for Dynamically Creating New Objects

  I'm looking for a method to dynamically create new class objects during runtime of a program. So far what I've read leads me to believe it's not easy and normally reserved for more advanced program requirements. What I've tried so far is this: // create a vector of type class vector<class_name> vect; // and use push_back (method 1) vect.push_back(*new Object); //or use for loop and [] operator (method 2) vect[i] = *new Object; neither of these throw errors from the compiler, but I'm using ifstream to read data from a file and dynamically create the objects... the file read is taking in some weird data and occasionally reading a memory address, and it's obvious to me it's due to my use/misuse of the code snippet above. • Detect user logout / shutdown in Python / GTK under Linux - SIGTERM/HUP not received

  OK this is presumably a hard one, I've got an pyGTK application that has random crashes due to X Window errors that I can't catch/control. So I created a wrapper that restarts the app as soon as it detects a crash, now comes the problem, when the user logs out or shuts down the system, the app exits with status 1. But on some X errors it does so too. But not on my System. GDM doesn't care about the script at all, when I relog, it's still running. I've also tried using shopt -s huponexit, with no success. EDIT2: Also here's some more information aboute the real code, the whole thing looks like this: Wrapper Script, that catches errors and restarts the programm -> Main Programm with GTK Mainloop -> Background Updater Thread The flow is like this: Start Wrapper -> enter restart loop while restarts < max: -> start program -> check return code -> write error to file or exit the wrapper on 0 Now on shutdown, start program return 1. That means either it did hanup or the parent process terminated, the main problem is to figure out which of these two did just happen. X Errors result in a 1 too. • SQLite file locking and DropBox

  I'm developing an app in Visual C++ that uses an SQLite3 DB for storing data. Usually it sits in the tray most of the time. I also would like to enable putting my app in a DropBox folder to share it across several PCs. It worked really well up until DropBox has recently updated itself. And now it says that it "can't sync the file in use". The SQLite file is open in my app, but the lock is shared. There are some prepared statements, but all are reset immediately after using step. Is there any way to enable synchronizing of an open SQLite database file? Thanks! • SQL Server 2008: FileStream Insertion Failure w/ .NET 3.5SP1

  I've configured a db w/ a FileStream group and have a table w/ File type on it. When attempting to insert a streamed file and after I create the table row, my query to read the filepath out and the buffer returns a null file path. I can't seem to figure out why though. • How to override PHP configuration when running in CGI mode

  There are some tutorials out there telling me how to override PHP configuration when it is running in CGI mode. But I'm still confused because lots of them assume that the server is running on Linux. While I need to do that also in Windows. My hosting is indeed using Linux but my local development computer is using Windows XP with Xampp 1.7.3. So I need to do that in my local computer first, then I want to change the configuration on hosting server. The PHP in my hosting server is already run as CGI while in my local computer still run as Apache module. At this point, the processes that I understand are: Change PHP to work in CGI mode. I did this by commenting these two line in "httpd-xampp.conf": # LoadFile "C:/xampp/php/php5ts.dll" # LoadModule php5_module modules/php5apache2_2.dll Create "cgi-bin" directory in DocumentRoot. My DocumentRoot is in "D:\www\" (I'm using apache with virtual host). So it is now "D:\www\cgi-bin". Change the default "cgi-bin" directory settings from "C:/xampp/cgi-bin/" to "D:\www\cgi-bin": ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "D:/www/cgi-bin/" <Directory "D:\www\cgi-bin"> Options MultiViews Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch Includes ExecCGI AllowOverride All Allow from All </Directory> At this point, my PHP is now running as CGI. I checked this with phpinfo(). It tells me that Server API is now CGI/FastCGI. Now I want to override php configuration. I copied 'php.ini' file to "D:\www\cgi-bin" and modify upload_max_filesize setting from 128M to 10M. Create 'php.cgi' file in "D:\www\cgi-bin" and put these code inside the file: #!/bin/sh /usr/local/cpanel/cgi-sys/php5 -c /home/user/public_html/cgi-bin/ That's it. I'm stuck at this point. All of tutorials tell me to create 'php.cgi' file and put shell code inside the file. How to do the 6th step on Windows? I know the next step is to create handler in .htaccess file to load that 'php.cgi'. And also, because I will also need to change PHP configuration on my hosting server (Linux), is the 6th step above right? • NetBeans not liking libraries in lib-src

  I'm working on a project with a group that is using Eclipse, but I'm using Netbeans. Up until today this wasn't an issue. When updating from the repo they have added some source code as a library under a directory called /lib-src. When I try to compile the code I get an error that it can't find certain packages... these are the packages under /lib-src. Using NetBeans I can add the library as a folder so now the references to those packages are happy.
