• Configuring network to set wlan0 as primary

  I recently had to rebuild my pc and decided to go for ubuntu 14.04. I think the mistake I made was I started from a 12.04 install disk instead of the 12.10 disk I'd used previously and when given the option set my primary connection as ethernet (because the wireless option didn't work). After upgrading to 14.04 etc, I managed to get the wireless working, or more using steps like ifconfig -a and the likes I managed to prove that the wireless card etc. is all installed and working. However every time I boot without a hard wired connection plugged in I get the message "waiting for network configuration". I can then once it's booted without a network get my wirless working using sudo ifconfig wlan0 up iwlist wlan0 scan This seems to kick the wireless module into life and it appears in the GUI and I can then select a network, however all the options like edit network and disconnect etc are all greyed out. What I would like of course is if the WLAN0 was just set as my primary default network so I've been looking for a solution to this and it would seem that I need to adjust the old /etc/network/interfaces file but when I try to do so using the sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces command I, well I simply have no idea what I'm doing. Other than that typing :q! gets me out of there before I do to much damage! As far as I can tell (by navigating to the file in the GUI) the output of my /etc/network/interfaces is as follows: (obviously not including the " in each line that's just to break the heading rule of the #) "# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system "# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). "# The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback "# The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp If this is the case then this clearly doesn't contain what it should do but I don't how to fix it. Nor do I even know if I'm on the right track. Any help would be appreciated thanks :)

• How do I fix the Dash search not being able to find "additional drivers" nor "update"?

  I am a fairly new user of Ubuntu, and currently have two 12.04 installations, one of which seems to work ok but I have two problems. The problem I'm asking about in this question, is that the Dash search seems unable to find things, such as "additional drivers" or "update". On my working machine, searching for "additional drivers" there finds an icon for the driver program, but on the problem machine, it gives "Sorry, there is nothing that matches your search." Dash also only shows sections for Recent Files, and Downloads, on that machine. The account I'm running is an admin account. This installation also has a stuck Ubuntu Software Center (it loads and hangs) as in threads like this one. I don't think I've done very much to this computer that could cause a problem. I installed g++ and Wt to do some programming. The biggest change I can remember is uninstalling the newfangled scrollbars with "sudo apt-get remove liboverlay-scrollbar3-0.2-0", but re-installing that module seems to have no effect on these issues. Anyone have any ideas? Both machines have been updated with all recommended updates and say they are up to date.

• Virtual Hosts Not Working (12.10)

  I'm trying to get virtual hosts up and running on my Ubuntu laptop that has 12.10 installed. I'm running Apache2, and I enabled the virtual hosting module. When I go to 12.0.0.1, I'm able to get the default page. When I go to example.local, I just get the search engine results, instead of the "hey, you're seeing this" page I set up in that directory (/var/www/example.local). I even made sure I have only one "NameVirtualHost *:80" variable active.   How do I install SciPy on my system? Update 1: for the NumPy part (that SciPy depends on) there is actually an installer for 64 bit Windows: numpy-1.3.0.win-amd64-py2.6.msi (is direct download URL, 2310144 bytes). Running the SciPy superpack installer results in this message in a dialog box: "Cannot install. Python version 2.6 required, which was not found in the registry." I already have Python 2.6.2 installed (and a working Django installation in it), but I don't know about any Registry story.   Hello, I am creating a simple application that enables merging of key-value pairs fields in a Word and/or Excel document. Until this day, the application has worked out just fine. I am using the latest version of .NET Framework 4.0 (since it provides a nice wrapper API for Interop).   I have enterprise aplication with ejb and war module, and since I created local interface web module wont deploy. It builds fine. EJB project is referenced inside web project. Also when I delete <ejb-local-ref> from web.xml it deploys, but then lookup method fails. • Debugging Silverlight crash

  I am trying to debug an IE 8 crash caused by a Silverlight application. I managed to find some articles on how to do a memory dump when a process crashes. I loaded the dump in windbg and ran !analyze -v. Below is the result. I am stuck at what further steps I can take to figure out what module or library that is running in Silverlight is causing the crash.   Note, this might perhaps be best suited on serverfault.com, but since it is about hosting a programmer source code repository, I am not entirely sure. I'm posting here first, trusting that it'll be migrated if necessary. I'm attempting to host clones of my Mercurial repositories on my own server (I have the main repo somewhere else), and I'm attempting to set up Mercurial under IIS. I followed the guide here, but I get an error message. Solved: See bottom of this question for details. The error message is: mercurial.error.RepoError: repository /path/to/repo/or/config not found Here's what I did. I installed Mercurial 1.5.2 I created c:\inetpub\hg I downloaded the hg source as per the instructions of the webpage, and copied the hgweb.cgi file into c:\inetpub\hg (note, the webpage says hgwebdir.cgi, but this particular file does not exist, hgweb.cgi does, however, can this be the source of the problem?) I added a hgweb.config, with the following contents: [paths] repo1 = C:/hg/** [web] style = monoblue I created c:\hg, created a sub-directory test, and created a repository inside it I installed python 2.6.5, latest 2.6 version from the website (the webpage mentions I need to install the correct version or I'll get a specific error message, since I don't get an error message that looks remotely like the one mentioned, I assume that 2.6.5 is not the problem) I added a new virtual host hg.vkarlsen.no, pointing it to c:\inetpub\hg For this host, I added a script mapping under the Handler Mappings section, mapping *.cgi to c:\python26\python.exe -u %s %s as per the instructions on the website. I then tested it by navigating to http://hg.vkarlsen.no/hgweb.cgi, but I get an error message. If I change the line to this: config = "c:\\hg\\test" Then I can navigate the empty repository through the Mercurial web interface. However, I want to host multiple repositories, and seeing as the line says that I can also link to a hgweb config file, I tried this: config = "c:\\inetpub\\hg\\hgweb.config" But then I get the following error message: mercurial.error.Abort: c:\inetpub\hg\hgweb.config: not a Mercurial bundle file Exception ImportError: 'No module named shutil' in <bound method bundlerepository.__del__ of <mercurial.bundlerepo.bundlerepository object at 0x0260A110>> ignored Nothing I've tried for the config variable seems to work: config = "hgweb.config" config = "c:\\hg\\hgweb.config" various other variations I don't remember. So, still stumped, pointers anyone? Solved: I ended up having to edit the hgweb.cgi file: from: from mercurial.hgweb import hgweb, wsgicgi application = hgweb(config) to: from mercurial.hgweb import hgweb, hgwebdir, wsgicgi application = hgwebdir(config) Note the added hgwebdir parts there. Here's my hgweb.config file, located in the same directory as hgweb.cgi file: [collections] C:/hg/ = C:/hg/ [web] style = gitweb This now serves my repositories successfully. • How can I install Perl's DBI on Mac OS X so Apache can find it?

  I'm trying to setup a Perl development environment on my Mac laptop and have been having a really hard time getting it working. I thought I had everything configured correctly but when I try to run a sample script it is reporting errors with the DBI module and can't access the DB.   I want to write a module (framework specific), that would wrap and extend Facebook PHP-sdk (https://github.com/facebook/php-sdk/). My problem is - how to organize classes, in a nice way. So getting into details - Facebook PHP-sdk consists of two classes: BaseFacebook - abstract class with all the stuff sdk does Facebook - extends BaseFacebook, and implements parent abstract persistance-related methods with default session usage Now I have some functionality to add: Facebook class substitution, integrated with framework session class shorthand methods, that run api calls, I use mostly (through BaseFacebook::api()), authorization methods, so i don't have to rewrite this logic every time, configuration, sucked up from framework classes, insted of passed as params caching, integrated with framework cache module I know something has gone very wrong, because I have too much inheritance that doesn't look very normal.Wrapping everything in one "complex extension" class also seems too much. I think I should have few working togheter classes - but i get into problems like: if cache class doesn't really extend and override BaseFacebook::api() method - shorthand and authentication classes won't be able to use the caching. Maybe some kind of a pattern would be right in here? How would you organize these classes and their dependencies? It's all very tight coupled - like look how i had to specify 'Facebook_Custom::api' instead of 'parent:api', to avoid api() method loop on Facebook_Cache class extending. Overall mess and ugliness. So again, this works but I'm just asking about patterns / ways of doing this in a cleaner and smarter way.

  Especifications: - Server: Weblogic 9.2 fixed by customer. - Webservices defined by wsdl and xsd files fixed by customer; not modifications allowed. Hi, In the project we need to develope a mail system. This must do common work with the webservice. We create a Bean who recieves an auto-generated class from non-root xsd element (not wsdl); this bean do this common work. The mail system recieves a xml with elements defined in xsd file and we need to drop this elements info to wsdlc generated classes. With this objects we can use this common bean. Is not possible to redirect the mail request to the webservice. We've looking for the code to do this with WL9.2 resources but we don't found anything. At the moment we've tried to use JAXB for this unmarshalling: JAXBContext c = JAXBContext.newInstance(new Class[]{WasteDCSType.class}); Unmarshaller u = c.createUnmarshaller(); WasteDCSType w = u.unmarshal(waste, WasteDCSType.class).getValue(); waste variable is an DOM Element object. It isn't the root element 'cause the root isn't included in XSD First we needed to add no-arg constructor in some autogenerated classes. No problem, we solved this and finally we unmarshalled the xml without error Exceptions. But we had problems with the attributes. The unmarshalling didn't set attributes; none of them in any class, not simple attributes, not large or short enumeration attributes. No problem with xml elements of any type. We can't create the unmarshaller from "context string" (the package name) 'cause not ObjectFactory has been create by wsldc. If we set the schema no element descriptions are founded and unmarshall crashes. • Is C# slower than VB.NET?

  Believe it or not, despite the title, this is not a troll. Running some benchmarks this morning, my colleagues and I have discovered some strange things concerning performance, and I am wondering if we're doing something horribly wrong. We started out comparing C# vs. Delphi Prism calculating prime numbers, and found that Prism was about 30% faster. I figured maybe CodeGear did more optimization when generating IL (the exe was about twice as big as C#'s and had all sorts of different IL in it.) So I decided to write a test in VB.NET as well, assuming that Microsoft's compilers would end up writing essentially the same IL for each language. However, the result there was more shocking: C# was more than three times slower than VB running the same operations. The generated IL was different, but not extremely so, and I'm not good enough at reading it to understand the differences. As a fan of C#, this apparent slowness wounds me horribly, and I am left wondering: what in the world is going on here? Is it time to pack it all in and go write web apps in Ruby? ;-) I've included the code for each below--just copy it into a new VB or C# console app, and run. On my machine, VB finds 348513 primes in about 6.36 seconds. C# finds the same number of primes in 21.76 seconds. (I've got an Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @2.4Ghz; on another Intel machine in the office the code for both runs much faster but the ratio is about the same; on an AMD machine here the timing is ~10 seconds for VB and ~13 for C#--much less difference, but C# is still always slower.) Both of the console applications were compiled in Release mode, but otherwise no project settings were changed from the defaults generated by Visual Studio 2008. Is it a generally-known fact that C#'s generated IL is worse than VB's? Or is this a strange edge case? Or is my code flawed somehow (most likely)? Any insights are appreciated. • Error in python - don't understand

  Hi, I'm creating a game, and am quite new to Python generally. I created a function 'descriptionGenerator()' which generates a description for characters and objects either randomly or using variables passed to it. It seemed to be working, but every now and then it wouldn't work correctly. So i placed it in a loop, and it never seems to be able to complete the loop without one of the iterations having this problem. • Python dictionary key missing

  I thought I'd put together a quick script to consolidate the CSS rules I have distributed across multiple CSS files, then I can minify it. I'm new to Python but figured this would be a good exercise to try a new language. My main loop isn't parsing the CSS as I thought it would. I populate a list with selectors parsed from the CSS files to return the CSS rules in order. • Writing a code example

  I would like to have your feedback regarding code examples. One of the most frustrating experiences I sometimes have when learning a new technology is finding useless examples. I think an example as the most precious thing that comes with a new library, language, or technology. It must be a starting point, a wise and unadulterated explanation on how to achieve a given result. A perfect example must have the following characteristics: Self contained: it should be small enough to be compiled or executed as a single program, without dependencies or complex makefiles. An example is also a strong functional test if you correctly installed the new technology. The more issues could arise, the more likely is that something goes wrong, and the more difficult is to debug and solve the situation. Pertinent: it should demonstrate one, and only one, specific feature of your software/library, involving the minimal additional behavior from external libraries. Helpful: the code should bring you forward, step by step, using comments or self-documenting code. Extensible: the example code should be a small “framework” or blueprint for additional tinkering. A learner can start by adding features to this blueprint. Recyclable: it should be possible to extract parts of the example to use in your own code Easy: An example code is not the place to show your code-fu skillz. Keep it easy. helpful acronym: SPHERE. Prototypical examples of violations of those rules are the following: Violation of self-containedness: an example spanning multiple files without any real need for it. If your example is a python program, keep everything into a single module file. Don’t sub-modularize it. In Java, try to keep everything into a single class, unless you really must partition some entity into a meaningful object you need to pass around (and java mandates one class per file, if I remember correctly). Violation of Pertinency: When showing how many different shapes you can draw, adding radio buttons and complex controls with all the possible choices for point shapes is a bad idea. You de-focalize your example code, introducing code for event handling, controls initialization etc., and this is not part the feature you want to demonstrate, they are unnecessary noise in the understanding of the crucial mechanisms providing the feature. Violation of Helpfulness: code containing dubious naming, wrong comments, hacks, and functions longer than one page of code. Violation of Extensibility: badly factored code that have everything into a single function, with potentially swappable entities embedded within the code. Example: if an example reads data from a file and displays it, create a method getData() returning a useful entity, instead of opening the file raw and plotting the stuff. This way, if the user of the library needs to read data from a HTTP server instead, he just has to modify the getData() module and use the example almost as-is. Another violation of Extensibility comes if the example code is not under a fully liberal (e.g. MIT or BSD) license. Violation of Recyclability: when the code layout is so intermingled that is difficult to easily copy and paste parts of it and recycle them into another program. Again, licensing is also a factor. Violation of Easiness: Yes, you are a functional-programming nerd and want to show how cool you are by doing everything on a single line of map, filter and so on, but that could not be helpful to someone else, who is already under pressure to understand your library, and now has to understand your code as well. And in general, the final rule: if it takes more than 10 minutes to do the following: compile the code, run it, read the source, and understand it fully, it means that the example is not a good one.   I am trying to build a website using JBoss 7.1.1 and RESTeasy. I have managed to constructed and deploy and EAR with a both a WAR and an EJB-JAR contained within: voyager-app.ear META-INF/MANIFEST.MF META-INF/application.xml META-INF/jboss-app.xml lib/voyager-lib.jar voyager-adm.war voyager-ejb.jar voyager-web.war So far things are very simple. voyager-adm.war & voyager-lib.jar are empty (just the manifest file) but I know that I'm going to have code for them shortly. There is just one Stateful EJB - HarbourMasterBean (with just a local interface) and a few Database Entity Beans in the EJB jar file: voyager-ejb.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF META-INF/persistence.xml com/nutrastat/voyager/db/HarbourMasterBean.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/HarbourMasterLocal.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/PortEntity.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/ShipEntity.class As far as I can tell the EJBs deploy correctly because the database units are created and the log shows that the publication of some HarbourMaster references: java:global/voyager-app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:module/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:global/voyager-app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master java:app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master java:module/harbour-master The problem lies in getting the HarbourMaster EJB injected into my web bean. • Form values appear blank when submitting to the database - Drupal FormAPI

  Hello, I have been working on this drupal form API script for past week and half. to give an insight into my problem.. the form below merely lists a host of database records which contain 5 individual scoring ranks. (mind, action, relationship, language and IT). this code is apart of my own custom module where all values are listed from the database. the idea behind this module is to be able to edit these values on a large scale. • Drupal's not reading correct values from DB

  Hey Everyone, Here is my current problem. I am working with the chat module and I'm building a module that notifies users via AJAX that they have been invited to a chat. When an invite is found, I set the notified from 0 to 1. However, my problem is the periodical updater. When I first see that there is an invite, I notify the user, and set notified to 1. On the next select though, I get the same results before, as if the update didn't work. But, when I got check the database, I can see that it worked just fine. It's as if the query is querying a cache, but I can't figure it out.
