• Are the results of the system-check taken by "checkbox-gtk" public? Where can I watch them?

  With Ubuntu there comes a nice possibility to check the compatibility of a new (or even old) system and to send these data to the ubuntu developers. The tool to do this is "checkbox-gtk". I would like to know, whether there is a chance to view these results because it would be nice to know if the future system will work with ubuntu. Yes. I know about the certified hardware list, but there are only a few systems listed and i hope that more people test there systems with checkbox and commit the results.

• Ubuntu and surround sound

  I'm trying to connect my Logitech x.530 to my Dell studio 1558 and get 5.1 sound. I have 3 jacks and in Windows I automatically could switch between line in adn mic. Which means I could get 5.1 surround over these 3 jacks. Ubuntu does not realise that one of the three jacks should be switched to give sound to the center and LFE speaker. I tried all the tips in the forums, but nothing works. I can only select 4.0 sound in pulse audio. As the dell and the IDT 92hd89e chip for the sound are probably famous laptops I thought there must be someone who has similar issues in the 5.1 sound. I would like to stay at Linux but without this hardware support it's almost impossible.

  I've installed ubuntu 12.04, but after rebooting I get the message: GRUB loading: Welcome to GRUB! error: file '/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found Entering rescue mode... grub rescue> I have the following partitons setup: /dev/sda6: /boot ext2 /dev/sda9: / ext4 /dev/sda8: swap /dev/sda7: /home ext4 I guess that some of the prefixes for GRUB are wrong due to the /boot partition? Or there might be a problem with EFI? The hardware is a 1015bx asus netbook with c-60 amd fusion chipset. How can I fix this GRUB problem from the rescue prompt?

• Opening programs very slow on ubuntu 12.10

  When I open any program for first time after boot, it loads VERY slowly (Doesn't matter how long after boot). For example, terminal takes 2-3 seconds, skype and firefox often take much longer. If I close it and open again, it loads in reasonable time (<1 second). I got Intel Core i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz, so it shouldn't be hardware issue... What is causing this? Disk benchmark: Average read time: 115.5 MB/s (100 samples) Average write time: 98.7 MB/s (100 samples) Average access time: 11.79 msec (1000 samples)

  I'm using 14:04 which is pretty nice. Something wionders me: if I open a window (e.g. Ubuntu Software Centre) I can see SOME items (sometimes nothing) but by hovering the mouse over it it appears - and then disappears again. Sometimes the side mover acts the same way... Maybe it has to do with my hardware: P4, 3 GHz, 2 GB RAM, older graphics board, KVM-switch? There's no difference whether I use Gnome, Ubuntu standard, Ubuntu classic, Ubuntu fallback... Thanks for hints Jens

  Currently Work in IT support and am retraining in electrical engineering / electronics, I am also interested in Reverse Engineering which language would be best for Hardware RE, I have seen a few sources say C, C++ and Python? I am not familiar with Linux, but installed ubuntu to learn with. I am not a programmer far from it, but I can understand enough basic VB,Java and PHP to edit it for simple things. One of my immediate projects would be to learn to reverse engineer USB devices and write my own low level drivers, I know there are porting kits, but I really want to know it from the ground up.   I am using Gnome 3. After upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04, "Ctrl-Alt-S" was reclaimed for use in toggling the shaded state of a window. I have checked the following places, and I haven't been able to find any instance of a keybinding set for toggling the shaded state. System Settings / Hardware / Keyboard / Shortcuts (as per How do I disable Ctrl+Alt+s to minimize a window?) I even tried setting a different shortcut. Made no difference. dconf-editor (now deprecated, from what I've found) gconf-editor/gsettings What am I missing?

• Spurious resets on Ubuntu

  I have a PC running Ubuntu 13.04 64bit, and I do weekly updates, so everything should be up-to-date. Everything is running fine, but sometimes, once-twice a week a complete reset happens. I think it must be software or hardware (perhaps Videocard) related, but I can't figure out what could be wrong. Can anybody suggest some ways, log files, where I could continue to search? By looking just at dmesg/dmesg.0 and Xorg.0.log I got nowhere. I cant find even a user application segfault. Any help is really appreciated.

  I have a headless Ubuntu 12.04 server for files and printers. It shares files via Samba just fine. However, the HP PSC-750xi connected to the server via USB is not accessible from my Ubuntu 12.04 laptop. I can browse for it in the Printing control panel, but any attempt to authenticate my ID to the printer with my user credentials results in the error "This print share is not accessible".   I am attempting to request a page like "http://www.google.com/?q=random" using the webrequest class in vb.net. we are behind a firewall, so we have to authenticate our requests. I have gotten past the authentication part by adding my credentials. But once that works it seems to go into a redirecting loop. Does anyone have an ideas, comments, suggetions why this is? Has anyone else experienced this problem? • How to remove "VsDebuggerCausalityData" data from SOAP message?

  I've got a problem where incoming SOAP messages from one particular client are being marked as invalid and rejected by our XML firewall device. It appears extra payload data is being inserted by Visual Studio; we're thinking the extra data may be causing a problem b/c we're seeing "VsDebuggerCausalityData" in these messages but not in others sent from a different client who is not having a problem. It's a starting point, anyway. The question I have is how can the client remove this extra data and still run from VS? Why is VS putting it in there at all? Thanks.

• Tips / techniques for high-performance C# server sockets

  I have a .NET 2.0 server that seems to be running into scaling problems, probably due to poor design of the socket-handling code, and I am looking for guidance on how I might redesign it to improve performance. Usage scenario: 50 - 150 clients, high rate (up to 100s / second) of small messages (10s of bytes each) to / from each client. Client connections are long-lived - typically hours. (The server is part of a trading system. The client messages are aggregated into groups to send to an exchange over a smaller number of 'outbound' socket connections, and acknowledgment messages are sent back to the clients as each group is processed by the exchange.) OS is Windows Server 2003, hardware is 2 x 4-core X5355. Current client socket design: A TcpListener spawns a thread to read each client socket as clients connect. The threads block on Socket.Receive, parsing incoming messages and inserting them into a set of queues for processing by the core server logic. Acknowledgment messages are sent back out over the client sockets using async Socket.BeginSend calls from the threads that talk to the exchange side. Observed problems: As the client count has grown (now 60-70), we have started to see intermittent delays of up to 100s of milliseconds while sending and receiving data to/from the clients. (We log timestamps for each acknowledgment message, and we can see occasional long gaps in the timestamp sequence for bunches of acks from the same group that normally go out in a few ms total.) Overall system CPU usage is low (< 10%), there is plenty of free RAM, and the core logic and the outbound (exchange-facing) side are performing fine, so the problem seems to be isolated to the client-facing socket code. There is ample network bandwidth between the server and clients (gigabit LAN), and we have ruled out network or hardware-layer problems. Any suggestions or pointers to useful resources would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has any diagnostic or debugging tips for figuring out exactly what is going wrong, those would be great as well. Note: I have the MSDN Magazine article Winsock: Get Closer to the Wire with High-Performance Sockets in .NET, and I have glanced at the Kodart "XF.Server" component - it looks sketchy at best.

• What is the advantage of WSDualHttpBinding in WCF?

  How much benefit would there be to using WSDualHttpBinding with IIS hosted service vs. a client poll that calls the WCF service, assuming in the latter the service cached the data in question? This scenerio would be for a notify type of service where the clients need to be notified by the service when an event occurs. Specifically, what advantages would WSDualHttpBinding provide over polling? ie: Less network traffic, faster to design, easier to maintain, more control ??? From what i understand, WSDualHttpBinding is less scalable than client polling, so why use it at all? Edit: As Matt supplied, time critical can be one reason for the duplex binding. • Linux - serial port read returning EAGAIN...

I've used this instance of code plenty of times and all worked fine, but now, for some reason that I cant figure out, I am completely unable to read anything from the serial port. But... when I do a read afterwards, I get a "Resource Temporarily Unavailable" error from errno. I tested select to see when the file descriptor had something t read... but it always times out! • SoapHttpClientProtocol disable ssl certificate validation

  I need to tell my C# soap web service consumer to not validate the certificate and just accept it. Is this possible? Why: we publish a https-only web service. A client needs to consume it but has some kind of firewall/proxy (WebSense?) which does something to the certificate to make it fail validation. At this point I don't even know the details of what it does, but the customer appears to be ok with forfeiting the benefits of SSL, so I'm looking for a workaround.

  In order to improve the deployment / build process of my ASP.NET app, I would like to make a .bat that builds the current solution in release mode xcopy the files to a remote server Creating a release build via command line is easy. But how can I xcopy the files to the remote server? I think I have to map the remote destination to a network drive (?). However I could not connect to the remote server, although I have enabled file sharing for the folder on the server. Maybe the firewall is blocking the request? Which port should I open? Or is there another solution? EDIT Thanks for all the answers so far, but I probably need a step by step guide on how to set up the folder sharing on the server. I shared the folder, I opened up port 445 so that I can connect to the server but still, I cant connect from my local machine to the server in order to map the network path to a system drive.
