• Where are my date ranges in Analytics coming from?

  In the P6 Reporting Database there are two main tables to consider when viewing time - W_DAY_D and W_Calendar_FS.  W_DAY_D is populated internally during the ETL process and will provide a row for every day in the given time range. Each row will contain aspects of that day such as calendar year, month, week, quarter, etc. to allow it to be used in the time element when creating requests in Analytics to group data into these time granularities. W_Calendar_FS is used for calculations such as spreads, but is also based on the same set date range. The min and max day_dt (W_DAY_D) and daydate (W_Calendar_FS) will be related to the date range defined, which is a start date and a rolling interval plus a certain range. Generally start date plus 3 years.  In P6 Reporting Database 2.0 this date range was defined in the Configuration utility.  As of P6 Reporting Database 3.0, with the introduction of the Extended Schema this date range is set in the P6 web application. The Extended Schema uses this date range to calculate the data for near real time reporting in P6.  This same date range is validated and used for the P6 Reporting Database.  The rolling date range means if today is April 1, 2010 and the rolling interval is set to three years, the min date will be 1/1/2010 and the max date will be 4/1/2013.  1/1/2010 will be the min date because we always back fill to the beginning of the year. On April 2nd, the Extended schema services are run and the date range is adjusted there to move the max date forward to 4/2/2013.  When the ETL process is run the Reporting Database will pick up this change and also adjust the max date on the W_DAY_D and W_Calendar_FS. There are scenarios where date ranges affecting areas like resource limit may not be adjusted until a change occurs to cause a recalculation, but based on general system usage these dates in these tables will progress forward with the rolling intervals. Choosing a large date range can have an effect on the ETL process for the P6 Reporting Database. The extract portion of the process will pull spread data over into the STAR. The date range defines how long activity and resource assignment spread data is spread out in these tables. If an activity lasts 5 days it will have 5 days of spread data. If a project lasts 5 years, and the date range is 3 years the spread data after that 3 year date range will be bucketed into the last day in the date range. For the overall project and even the activity level you will still see the correct total values.  You just would not be able to see the daily spread 5 years from now. This is an important question when choosing your date range, do you really need to see spread data down to the day 5 years in the future?  Generally this amount of granularity years in the future is not needed. Remember all those values 5, 10, 15, 20 years in the future are still available to report on they would be in more of a summary format on the activity or project.  The data is always there, the level of granularity is the decision.

• Faster Memory Allocation Using vmtasks

In a nutshell, vmtasks accelerates creation, locking, and destruction of pages in shared memory segments. This is particularly helpful for locked memory, as creating a page of physical memory is much more expensive than creating a page of virtual memory. For example, an ISM segment (shmflag & SHM_SHARE_MMU) is locked in memory on the first shmat() call, and a DISM segment (shmflg & SHM_PAGEABLE) is locked using mlock() or memcntl(). Segment operations such as creation and locking are typically single threaded, performed by the thread making the system call. In many applications, the size of a shared memory segment is a large fraction of total physical memory, and the single-threaded initialization is a scalability bottleneck which increases application startup time. To break the bottleneck, we apply parallel processing, harnessing the power of the additional CPUs that are always present on modern platforms. For sufficiently large segments, as many of 16 threads of vmtasks are employed to assist an application thread during creation, locking, and destruction operations. The segment is implicitly divided at page boundaries, and each thread is given a chunk of pages to process. The per-page processing time can vary, so for dynamic load balancing, the number of chunks is greater than the number of threads, and threads grab chunks dynamically as they finish their work. Because the threads modify a single application address space in compressed time interval, contention on locks protecting VM data structures locks was a problem, and we had to re-scale a number of VM locks to get good parallel efficiency. The vmtasks process has 1 thread per CPU and may accelerate multiple segment operations simultaneously, but each operation gets at most 16 helper threads to avoid monopolizing CPU resources. We may reconsider this limit in the future. Acceleration using vmtasks is enabled out of the box, with no tuning required, and works for all Solaris platform architectures (SPARC sun4u, SPARC sun4v, x86). Creating the segment would take 6 minutes with the old code, and only 33 seconds with the new. If this is your Oracle SGA, you save over 5 minutes when starting the database, and you also save when shutting it down prior to a restart. Those minutes go directly to your bottom line for service availability.

• Installed SQL Server 2008 and now TFS is broken.

  Hi, My W2K3 server was running TFS 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Development edition. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard. I installed it while leaving SQL Server 2005 alone. Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken. On a client computer, if I go Team - Connect to Team Foundation Server, I get this error: Team Foundation services are not available from server myserver. Technical information (for administrator): TF30059: Fatal error while initializing web service. So I head on over to my event viewer on the server. Under Application, I see one warning and two errors. Is there a way to run Firefox into low rights mode? Is Mozilla planning on adding "protected mode" sometime? Has someone found a workaround to Firefox not handling low rights mode? • I removed my-freeze.com NetAssistant, but now can't access two websites

  I used "Revo Uninstaller" to uninstall the spyware which left me with a problem using Internet Explorer so then downloaded the free version of "Hijack This" from the website and, not reading the Super User answer correctly, used fix for the general issues it found and saved the log file of the other queries. NetAssistant is completely gone or appears to have - Malwarebytes Malware remover cannot find anything and most Google searches now seem to work correctly. However in removing it I seem to have made an error and now whenever I search for and try to open or try to directly access two sites which I had tried to access via NetAssistant whilst infected IE8 says they cannot be displayed. One of them is Wikipedia and I use both regularly. I am not sure at what point this happened I think it may have been after using Revo Uninstaller and the second section where it looks for references to netassistant (in the registry?). Not sure if this is relevant but I can remember deleting some flags or something relating to Internet Explorer but not sure what. Any suggestions?

• WNetAddConnection2 in Windows 7 with Impersonation and no Error Code

  I'm doing some crazy impersonation stuff to get around UAC dialogs in Windows 7 so the user does not have to interact with the UI (I have the admin creds of course). I have a process running as the Administrator and elevated past UAC. The issue that I'm facing is that when I make a call to WNetAddConnection2, within this process, I am not getting a new mapped net drive. The function returns ERROR_SUCCESS but no net drive is visible. We have another method of adding network drives using 'subst' but this, again, returns successful does does not add a net drive. I have tried to use the default user (which is the Administrator because of process's security context) and I have tried using specific user credentials. I can map the drive just fine through Explorer. Of course the same functionality works fine in XP/2003. I haven't got around to testing on Vista because of issues with impersonation that are limiting my ability to spin up the process. Are there unique Windows 7 limits on this function? MSDN does not glean any that I can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  I've got a Python program that needs to create a named temporary file which will be opened and closed a couple times over the course of the program, and should be deleted when the program exits. Unfortunately, none of the options in tempfile seem to work: TemporaryFile doesn't have a visible name NamedTemporaryFile creates a file-like object. I just need a filename. I've tried closing the object it returns (after setting delete = False) but I get stream errors when I try to open the file later. SpooledTemporaryFile doesn't have a visible name mkstemp returns both the open file object and the name; it doesn't guarantee the file is deleted when the program exits mktemp returns the filename, but doesn't guarantee the file is deleted when the program exits I've tried using mktemp1 within a context manager, like so: def get_temp_file(suffix): class TempFile(object): def __init__(self): self.name = tempfile.mktemp(suffix = '.test') def __enter__(self): return self def __exit__(self, ex_type, ex_value, ex_tb): if os.path.exists(self.name): try: os.remove(self.name) except: print sys.exc_info() return TempFile() ... but that gives me a WindowsError(32, 'The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process'). • How does one get Vista to display .MOV thumbnails as a frame from the movie?

  I've discovered that Windows Vista explorer shell does not display proper "thumbnail"s for .MOV files. e.g. For .JPG files, the explorer shell, when in Thumbnail mode, displays a scaled down version of the image. But for .MOV files, it displays the same icon as in the non-thumbnail view, which is just some generic thing that shows you it's going to be played with Quicktime or whatever. What XP used to do was show you a frame from the actual movie as the thumbnail. I've looked on internet and found various proposed solutions, but none which actually work. Is there a simple step-by-step process for getting Vista to properly display thumbnails for .MOV files?

• Implementing the outside application „openedFileView“ in c# Project

  I work on a application where i want to find out which files on my filesystem is used by a Process. After trying around with the System.Diagnostics.Process class, and didn´t get the resulst i wanted i find the application called OpenedFileView from Nirsoft. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/opened_files_view.html Basically it does exactly what i want but i have some problems with the implimication in my project. The option wich “OpenedFileView” gives you is to start it with some arguments that it creates you an txt file with all the information i want. But for my case i want to whach the processes in realtime, and if i start the application repetitively i always have the hourglass at my mouse cursor. So after this i tryed some ways to get rid of it, tryed out to put it in a BackgroundWorker Thread. But this changed nothing at all. I also looked for a way to force the Process not to exit, and sending new arguments to it, but this also didn´t worked. So is there any way to use this application in the way I want, or does this didn´t work at all? I hope somebody can help me either with getting away this annoying mouse cursor hourglass, or with a better implimication of this application so i can use it in realtime! • How do special folders work on Windows 7?

  Hello, I did something silly and accidentally moved my my special folders (My Documents, My Music etc.) to the Desktop. Once I noticed my mistake I quickly moved them back. But now my System acts erratically. It continuously creates new empty folders on my Desktop. And I have now two folders named "My Pictures" in my home directory. One of which is magically linked to the one in Desktop while on the command line one one is actually visible. If I delete the superfluous folders on Desktop then the explorer crashes. It is all a big mess. Of course I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\User Shell Folders and it looks all ok there. So here the question: As anybody got any informations on how Windows 7 handles the special folders which might help be clean up the mess? I am well versed in using both the command line or the registry editor.

• Databinding in WinForms performing async data import

  I have a scenario where I have a collection of objects bound to a datagrid in winforms. If a user drags and drops an item on to the grid, I need to add a placeholder row into the grid and kick off a lengthy async import process. I need to communicate the status of the async import process back to the UI, updating the row in the grid and have the UI remain responsive to allow the user to edit the other rows. What's the best practice for doing this? My current solution is: binding a thread safe implementation of BindingList to the grid, filled with the objects that are displayed as rows in the grid. When a user drags and drops an item on to the grid, I create a new object containing the sparse info obtained from the dropped item and add that to the BindingList, disabling the editing of that row. I then fire off a separate thread to do the import, passing it the newly bound object I have just created to fill with data. The import process, periodically sets the status of the object and fires an event which is subscribed to by the UI telling it to refresh the grid to see the new properties on the object. Should I be passing the same object that is bound to the grid to the import process thread to operate on, or should I be creating a copy and merging back the changes to the object on the UI thread using BeginInvoke? Any problems or advice with this implementation? Thanks

  Hi. I have 2 IBM servers Intel Xeon Dual core with 2gb RAM. the problem is that Taskmanager uses one full core when i open it. The same happens when i copy files in the explorer. OS: Windows 2003 Server Things i tried: Installed all updates They has kaspersky anti virus and they previously had Nod32. All drivers installed OK. All unused devices are disabled in the bios. Reinstalled win 2003 SP2. No conflict in drivers Tried opening via remote desktop and the problem continues.   This is more of a major annoyance than anything that's stopping me from doing my work, but I somehow seem to have had Active Desktop on my work XP machine get corrupted and now can't get it back working again. I've tried browsing to C:\Documents and Settings\%my-user-name%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and changing, deleting or replacing the Desktop.htt file, but it's not achieving anything. • Importing multiline cells from csv file into excel

  I have a csv file (comma delimited and quoted). When csv file is opened directly from explorer excel correctly interprets the cells that are mutliline, but it messes up the character encoding (utf-8). Therefore I have to use import function (Data/Get External Data/From Text). However, when I use import text function in excel (where I can set file encoding explicitly) it interprets the newline as start of the new row instead of putting multiline text into a single cell and breaks the file layout. Can I somehow overcome the situation by either forcing the explorer open command to use 65001: Unicode (UTF-8) encoding forcing the Text Import Wizard to ignore quoted line breaks as record delimiters

• Oracle rownum in db2 - Java data archiving

  I have a data archiving process in java that moves data between db2 and sybase. FYI - This is not done through any import/export process because there are several conditions on each table that are available on run-time and so this process is developed in java. Right now I have single DatabaseReader and DatabaseWriter defined for each source and destination combination so that data is moved in multiple threads. I guess I wanted to expand this further where I can have Multiple DatabaseReaders and Multiple DatabaseWriters defined for each source and destination combination. So, for example if the source data is about 100 rows and I defined 10 readers and 10 writer, each reader will read 10 rows and give them to the writer. I hope process will give me extreme performance depending on the resources available on the server [CPU, Memory etc]. But I guess the problem is these source tables do not have primary keys and it is extremely difficult to grab rows in multiple sets. Oracle provides rownum concept and i guess the life is much simpler there....but how about db2? How can I achieve this behavior with db2? Is there a way to say fetch first 10 records and then fetch next 10 records and so on? Any suggestions / ideas ? Db2 Version - DB2 v8.1.0.144 Fix Pack Num - 16 Linux

• Lost disk space in Windows 7, cannot find the missing

  My hard drive is complaining it is low on disk space, but a strange thing seems to be happening: Explorer reports 10Gb of available space (on a 120 Gb hard disk), chkdsk in the command prompt does the same but if I use a disk space tool such as SpaceSniffer or WinDirStat, only 50Gb of data is found. My guess is that there somehow is a hold on a large block of disk space (but that's just a guess) because of a prior very large (40 Gb) download attempt that didn't complete. There isn't 40Gb of files on the drive (hidden or visible), yet Explorer insists that something is there. How can I claim back this hard disk drive (without formatting my hard disk)? SpaceMonger is providing a clue, reporting four unscannable folders which add up to 43Gb: C:\RRBackups C:\System Volume Information C:\Windows\Csc\v2.06 C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Wmi\RtBackup Does anybody know what these folders are for, and how I can claim back at least some space? Restore point claims about 4Gb, so that doesn't seem to be the main problem.

• WCF InProcFactory error

  I'm using IDesign's ServiceModelEx assembly to provide additional functionality over and above what's available in standard WCF. In particular I'm making use of InProcFactory to host some WCF services within my process using Named Pipes. However, my process also declares a TCP endpoint in its configuration file, which I host and open when the process starts. At some later point, when I try to host a second instance of this service using the InProcFactory through the named pipe (from a different service in the same process), for some reason it picks up the TCP endpoint in the configuration file and tries to re-host this endpoint, which throws an exception as the TCP port is already in use from the first hosting.   Hi, I have console application. In that i have some process that fetch the data from database through different layers ( business and Data access). stores the fetched data in respective objects. Like if data is fetched for student then this data will store (assigned ) to Student object. same for school. and them a delegate call the certain method that generates outputs as per requirement. This process will execute many times say 10 times. Ok? I want to run simultaneously this process. not one will start, it will finish and then second will start. I want after starting 1'st process, just 2'nd , 3rd....10'th must be start. Means it should be multithreading. how can i achieve this ? is that will give me error while connection with data base open and close ? I have tried this concept . but when thread 1'st is starting then data will fetched for thread 1 will stored in its respective (student , school) objects. ok? when simultaneous 2'nd thread starts , but the data is changing of 1'st object ,while control flowing in program. What have to do?
