• What is your strategy to avoid dynamic typing errors in Python (NoneType has not attribute x)?

  Python is one of my favorite languages, but I really have a love/hate relationship with it's dynamicness. Apart from the advantages, it often results in me forgetting to check a type, trying to call an attribute and getting the NoneType (or any other) has no attribute x error. A lot of them are pretty harmless but if not handled correctly they can bring down your entire app/process/etc. Over time I got better predicting where these could pop up and adding explicit type checking, but because I'm only human I miss one occasionally and then some end-user finds it. So I'm interested in your strategy to avoid these. Do you use type-checking decorators? Maybe special object wrappers? Please share...

• Problem With HTML5 Application Cache Whitelist - Won't Ignore Items

  I'm trying to use HTML5 Application Cache to speed some things up on an iPhone webapp. It works great for storing images, css and JS, but the problem is that it also tries to store the HTML. I haven't been able to get it to ignore the html and stop storing it in the cache. From what I've read, I have to "whitelist" the files and directories that I want to load no matter what. I've tried listing the files I want cached explicitly, and I've tried adding a series of things under the "NETWORK:" heading. I've tried * / /* http://mysite.com http://mysite.com/ http://mysite.com/* None of them seem to work. Is there any way to ignore HTML files by MIME-Type or anything? Any advice would be appreciated.   Hi, let's assume I have a table of Products with columns: Id, Name, Price and using NHibernate (or ActiveRecord) I map the table to the POCO: public class Product { public virtual long Id { get; set; } public virtual string Name { get; set; } public virtual double Price { get; set; } } Now if someday a new column named ShipmentPrice (let's assume it's double too) will be added to the Products table, is there any way I can automatically know that. For saying automatically I mean adding code to do that or getting an exception? (I assume I don't have control on the columns of the table or a way to know of any changes to the table's schema in advance)

• ALTER TABLE without locking the table?

  When doing an ALTER TABLE statement in MySQL, the whole table is read-locked for the duration of the statement. If it's a big table, that means insert or update statements could be locked for a looooong time. Is there a way to do a "hot alter", like adding a column in such a way that the table is still updatable throughout the process? Mostly I'm interested in a solution for MySQL but I'd be interested in other RDBMS if MySQL can't do it. To clarify, my purpose is simply to avoid downtime when a new feature that requires an extra table column is pushed to production. Any database schema will change over time, that's just a fact of life. I don't see why we should accept that these changes must inevitably result in downtime; that's just weak.

• Inserting Large volume of data in SQL Server 2005

  We have a application (written in c#) to store live stock market price in the database (SQL Server 2005). It insert about 1 Million record in a single day. Now we are adding some more segment of market into it and the no of records would be double (2 Millions/day). Currently the average record insertion per second is about 50, maximum is 450 and minimum is 0. To check certain conditions i have used service broker (asynchronous trigger) on my price table. It is running fine at this time(about 35% CPU utilization). Now i am planning to create a in memory dataset of current stock price. we would like to do some simple calculations. I want to know different views of members on this. Please provide your way of dealing with such situation.

• How to create a folder in Eclipse?

  Hi, I'd like to create a folder under a package in Eclipse... The purpose of this folder is merely for organizational purposes. Meaning, I don't want it to be another package. Every time I try to add a folder under a package, it just creates a package instead. I'd like to have the following structure: project/src/package1/someClass.java project/src/package1/someFOLDER/anotherClass.java project/src/package1/package2/anotherFOLDER/oneOtherClass.java Is it possible to do this without adding a package? I come from a .NET/C# and C++ background... here I'd just add a folder and the reference to that class would be updated in the project. How can I just add an organizational folder in eclipse? Thanks

  I have an existing Perl app that I'm moving to a Webfaction website. I will be adding Django apps to this Webfaction website too. I would like the Django app to get first call and so would want its URL path to be / This would allow me to add any new URLs to the urls.py I wish as my app grows. If the URL doesn't match anything in the urls.py I would like it to get passed to the static Perl app. For example /app1 - Django /app2 - Django Everything else not picked up by urls.py I would want going to my Perl app For example: /index.html - Static/Perl app /about.html - Static/Perl app /contact.html - Static/Perl app /apps/perlapp1.cgi - Static/Perl app etc How do I go about achieving this in Webfaction?

  I have a unix timestamp for the current time. I want to get the unix timestamp for the start of the next day. $current_timestamp = time(); $allowable_start_date = strtotime('+1 day', $current_timestamp); As I am doing it now, I am simply adding 1 whole entire day to the unix timestamp, when instead I would like to figure out how many seconds are left in this current day, and only add that many seconds in order to get the unix timestamp for the very first minute of the next day. What is the best way to go about this?

• Exception thrown while working with JTabbedPane

  I'm using a JTabbedPane in my application and I listen to its changes with ChangeListener so that I can know which tab is currently selected. So my stateChanged method is; public void stateChanged(ChangeEvent e) { currentPageIndex = jTabbedPane.getSelectedIndex(); } But while I'm adding new tabs to the JTabbedPane it throws an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException in the method above, I don't know why. Some suggested for a similar case that this is a bug http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4873983, but as you'll see some says the solution is to work with Swing from EventDispatchThread. What does it mean, do they mean the SwingUtilities.invokeLater thing? Can someone show me how I can modify my stateChanged method accordingly to avoid the exception?

• JPanel Layout Image Cutoff

  I am adding images to a JPanel but the images are getting cut off. I was originally trying BorderLayout but that only worked for one image and adding others added image cut-off. So I switched to other layouts and the best and closest I could get was BoxLayout however that adds a very large cut-off which is not acceptable either. So basically; How can I add images (from a custom JComponent) to a custom JPanel without bad effects such as the one present in the code.   Hi, My understanding is that there are two obvious places in a Grails app where one can do meta-programming: The init closure of Bootstrap.groovy The doWithDynamicMethods closure of a plugin The meta-programming I'm referring to here should be visible throughout the metaprogramming, typical examples include adding (or replacing) methods of 3rd party classes. String.metaClass.myCustomMethod = { /* implementation omitted */ } The disadvantage of (1), is that the metaprogramming won't be applied when the application is dynamically reloaded. The disadvantage of (2) is that I need to create and maintain an entire plugin just for the sake of a little metaprogramming. Is there a better place to do this kind of metaprogramming? Thanks, Don

• How can I use Code Contracts in a C++/CLI project?

  I recently stumbled upon Code Contracts and have started using them in my C# projects. However, I also have a number of projects written in C++/CLI. For C# and VB, Code Contracts offer a handy configuration panel in the project properties dialog. For a C++/CLI project, there is no such panel. From the documentation, I got the impression that adding Code Contracts support to a C++/CLI project should be a simple matter of calling some external tools as part of the build process (namely ccrefgen.exe, cccheck.exe, and ccrewrite.exe). However, the number of command line options and restrictions concerning the call sequence have me somewhat intimidated. Can anybody point me to a simple way to run the Code Contracts tools as an automated part of the build process in Visual Studio?

  Last summer, I asked a question regarding how to add new object to an IList mapped as a one-to-many with NHibernate. One of the answers let me to this paragraph in the documentation: Please note that NHibernate does not support bidirectional one-to-many associations with an indexed collection (list, map or array) as the "many" end, you have to use a set or bag mapping. While I am pretty sure I understand what this paragraph says, I have no idea why or how to work around this limitation. As I am now again working with a model that seems to require a "bidirectional one-to-many association with an index collection", I figured the time was right for follow-up questions: Why does NHibernate have this limitation on associations? It is my impression that the guys behind NHibernate are quite clever, so I assume there is a pretty good reason. What are the common workarounds for this shortcoming? Making the collection a non-indexed bag and adding an explicit Position property to the child class? Any better solutions?

• Linq to xml not able to add new elements

  We save our xml in a "text" field in the database. So first I check if it exist any xml, if not I create a new xdocument, fill it with the necessary xml. else i just add the new element. I get an error saying incorrectly structured document. • Django ORM and PostgreSQL connection limits

  I'm running a Django project on Postgresql 8.1.21 (using Django 1.1.1, Python2.5, psycopg2, Apache2 with mod_wsgi 3.2). We've recently encountered this lovely error: OperationalError: FATAL: connection limit exceeded for non-superusers I'm not the first person to run up against this. There's a lot of discussion about this error, specifically with psycopg, but much of it centers on older versions of Django and/or offer solutions involving edits to code in Django itself. I've yet to find a succinct explanation of how to solve the problem of the Django ORM (or psycopg, whichever is really responsible, in this case) leaving open Postgre connections. Will simply adding connection.close() at the end of every view solve this problem? Better yet, has anyone conclusively solved this problem and kicked this error's ass?

If I just replace this with a function taking a const wchar_t[], then the sizeof() will fail to deliver expected results. Simply adding a size member doesn't really solve the problem either. Making the user supply the size of the constant literal also results in a mess of duplicated constants at the call site. Any ideas on this one?

  This question is kind of an add-on to this question In C#, a switch case cannot fall through to other cases, this causes a compilation error. In this case I am just adding some number to the month total for the selected month and each subsequent month thereafter. • Sync Services With AddressBook

  Hi, I've developed an application to sync the Mac address book with another application. I was using an NSNotification (kABDatabaseChangedExternallyNotification) which are sent every time the address book is edited to do the syncing. However I found that if I 'overloaded' the address book (by adding 20 records really quickly or something) I didn't get all of the notifications. I have since found the Sync Services framework which seems to be aimed at my kind of application and it seems to work fine. The problem is that the changes are not 'pushed' to me in the same was as an NSNotification - I have to sync every 5 minutes or so. And, from what I can understand, I shouldn't use the AddressBook API directly but push changes back through sync services. This means that changes are not instant but lagged by how often address book/my app syncs. Is there any way to make it instant? or to use the NSNotifications reliably? Thanks for your time, Marc

  Hi, This is a powershell/AD/Exchange question.... I'm running a script against a number of Users to check some of their attributes however I'm having trouble getting this to output to CSV. The script runs well and does exactly what I need it to do, the output on screen is fine, I'm just having trouble getting it to directly export to csv. The input is a comma seperated txt file of usernames (eg "username1,username2,username3") I've experimented with creating custom ps objects, adding to them and then exporting those but its not working....
