• Debian as USB hardware portable as possible

  I have recent hardware, 64 bit, pae and so on. But I'd like to have my Debian installation on a USB HDD. Installing Debian to USB is solved. I used the i386 architecture image. But a pae kernel has been installed. I want to be able to travel with my USB HDD and therefore I want best possible hardware compatibility. My friends and family have sometimes older hardware, but always i386, just sometimes without 64 bit or pae. Never met someone with sparc or other architectures. What should I do to get non-pae kernel and maximum hardware compatibility?

• Troubleshooting server performance with a hosted server?

  We are in a tough spot, we have a hosted server with the following specs: OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 64bit Processor: Intel Xeon X7550 @ 2GHz (8 processors) RAM: 16GB The file system is on a SAN or NAS (not sure). We are seeing very odd issues where a user will open a 25MB .xslb file and it takes literally 60-120 seconds sometimes. The server is just dog slow for excel. Resources are not being pegged, CPU never jumps up, plenty of RAM... it's just oddly slow. Our host has been looking at the issue for several weeks with not much to show for it. Is there a utility I can run myself that will help trackdown our issue? I have found Server Performance Advisor V1.0 Any experience in using it? Our host is ultimately responsible for fixing this, but we are going on 1 month and our users are losing patience. Any tips would be helpful.

• IIS - Forwarding requests to a folder to another port

  Context I currently installed Glassfish 3 in a server that currently holds ASP and PHP inside Internet Information Server 7 so we can start moving to a new system architecture (the information system is being remade). Obviously, Glassfish uses another port and without too much configuration (all I had to do is to install it) it worked. If I write www.domain.com:8080, the person will be redirected to the Glassfish server. Issue Obviously I don't want the person to write the port! I also believe it might also hold some security issues. Requirement I need the server to take an address of the form www.domain.com/gf or new.domain.com or something alike, and when it receives such a request, "redirect" (masking the URL) the user to the Glassfish website (www.domain.com:8080). • Certificate Template Missing from "Certificate Template to Issue"

  I'm having a problem similar to that posted in this question: Missing Certificate template From certificate to issue The short version is that I've created a duplicate certificate template and I'm trying to add it to my domain CA so that I can issue certificates with it. However, when I go into the Certification Authority MMC and go to "Certificate Templates - New - Certificate Template To Issue", my template is missing (along with quite a number of other templates that are present in the domain). Unlike the previous question, however, my CA is running on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. Our organization has a single DC and a single CA, so I'm not seeing where there could be propagation delay. Any ideas how to get my template to show so that I can issue certificates?

• Windows 7 64bit keyboard issues

  I have a Pavilion dv4 notebook running Windows 7 64bit Enterprise edition. This morning I started to notice some really strange behavior in how it handled its built-in keyboard. At random intervals there will be a long delay in key presses, to which some keys will never show and other keys will continue to repeat until you hit the backspace. Other keys get mapped incorrectly to other keys. If I hook up an external keyboard the problem does not appear. Before I reformat the machine and do a fresh install, I thought I would check here to see if anyone has experienced this same issue and if so, how did you fix it?

  having a problem installing git on redhat enterprise 3. When I try and install the rpm it gives a circular dependency problem. • Hybrid Shutdown in Windows 8

  Referring to this article published September 8, 2011, it gives instructions on how to to do a full (non-hybrid) shutdown in Windows 8 from the command line. We have an option in the UI to revert back to the Windows 7 shutdown/cold boot behavior, or since that’s likely a fairly infrequent thing, you can use the new /full switch on shutdown.exe. From a cmd prompt, run: shutdown /s /full / t 0 to invoke an immediate full shutdown. shutdown /s /full /t 0 I tried this in W8 Enterprise RTM trial, but did not work, so I did a shutdown /? and noticed they have changed the command for a Full shutdown It appears the /s switch now does the full shutdown as explained in the MS article, and the /hybrid switch does the hybrid shutdown for fast startup. Can anyone confirm this change in other RTM versions of Windows 8? Any Microsoft docs on this change are welcome.

  My php.ini says: Additional .ini files parsed /etc/php53/php.d/curl.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/fileinfo.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/json.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/mysqli.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/mysql.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/pdo_mysql.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/phar.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/zip.ini mysqli.ini is loaded.. But still i get this, PHP Fatal error: Class 'mysqli' not found i tried enabling dynamic loading and initialize php scripts with dl("mysqli.so"); i also tried recompiling the php source: ./configure --with-mysql=/usr/lib64/mysql --with- mysqli=/usr/lib64/mysql/mysql_config even this didn't work. • What version of SCO Open Server are guys using out there and on what hardware?

  I have some old applications which are running on SCO Open Server 5.0.5, and i would love to move them to SCO Open Server 5.0.7 and on modern hardware(servers), currently am running SCO on old IBM PL 300 personal computer, on 92MB Memory, one processor, and it has been serving the clients pretty well. Now i have New Modern IBM xseries Servers and i would love to migrate the same applications to those new servers. Problem is, SCO 5.0.5 is unable to detect some of the hardware components in the new servers. I read somewhere that SCO 5.0.7 is able to detect the newer hardware even the USB ports etc. Is there anyone running SCO Openserver out there, and on what hardware architecture are they running on? • Exchange 2010 - No Push notification when when deleting emails from Outlook

  Hi I'm setting up a Exchange 2010 server for our test environment. I'm running Windows 2008R2 enterprise on this machine. Iv'e also installed all updates available for windows and exchange 2010 including rollup 1 and 2 for exchange that include bugfixes regarding push notifications. My problem is when deleting mail or marking mail as read don't trigger a push notification. The happens when I use webgui, mobile phone and Outlook 2007. When deleting a email in Outlook 2007 the changes get sent to the server since the changes are visible in webgui but not on mobile phone. I get push notifications when I get new emails since new emails appear instantly on the mobile phone. Is this normal behaviour on Exchange 2010? For me it seems a bit funny. If i force sync on mobile phone the changes appear. Iv'e tested this on both iphone and HTC HD2(Running Windows Mobile 6.5) with same results.

• Out of memory Problem

  I'm running a C++ program in Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit system architecture). If I calculate the amount of memory that my program uses, it comes up to 800MB. I have a 4GB RAM in place. But still before the program even finishes it throws an out of memory exception. Why is that happening ? Is it because of the structure of the memory or implementation problems or what could possibly trigger this issue ? I've had seen this problem quite a number of times before but never understood the reason behind it. Have any of you handled this case before ?

• SuSE always logs a user in TVM session

  Hello all, I recently installed Suse Linux enterprise Desktop 11 on my box. I created an user and logged in first time into a GNOME session without any problems. Last time I logged in I selected the session as TWM and that got me into the T windows manager just fine. Now when I log out and try to log back into a GNOME session, it will still log me into the TVM session. I have tried restarting the box but that has not helped. However, when I remote log in to the machine it will let me got on the GNOME session just fine. I'm guessing this is probably a really simple fix, however I am a Linux newbie and doing a google search isn't yielding me what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance for your help, Rohan

• ClearOS - how to avoid getting stuck at a fsck message at boot?

  I have had this happen a couple times - I have a ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 box, and due to a power outage or similar, it ends up showing an error at boot and saying that fsck needs to be run (I think it said with (or without?) the -a parameter). The problem is, I need this box to be headless, at a remote location (miles away)! SO, I need to come up with a solution on how to either have it automatically repair itself, without someone to be present with a monitor and keyboard. Another possibility is to simply avoid the issue all together - maybe there is something that can be changed so it's very unlikely to happen (I am unable to avoid the power outage of course - at least not practically). Finally, maybe it can be boot off a read only media (cd) or file system or similar? At least the base OS, so that it would always at least boot with enough configuration that might allow remote access, or basic connectivity?

• TCP/IP- what is it exactly?

  I know that this question sounds stupid, but over all these years, I still have difficulty explaining TCP/IP to people. I don't completely get it myself, and even after reading up on it, the distinction is not very clear. What I get so far is that IP deals with networks while TCP involves delivery of messages over that network. I'm not totally convinced though. Also, they reside on different layers of the Internet architecture. Could anyone disambiguate this distinction using a simple analogy or examples? Also, I read this somewhere The difference is that TCP is responsible for the data delivery of a packet and IP is responsible for the logical addressing. In other words, IP obtains the address and TCP guarantees delivery of data to that address. Is this correct? Thanks for helping me out. One last thing- Where does the ethernet come in all of this?

• How to change MySQL data directory?

  I want to place my databases in another directory, so I can store them in an ESB (elastic block storage, just a fancy name for a virtualized harddisk) together with my web-apps and other persistent data. I have tried to walk through a tutorial at http://crashmag.net/change-the-default-mysql-data-directory-with-selinux-enabled. Everything seems fine until I type this command: # semanage fcontext -a -t mysqld_db_t "/srv/mysql(/.*)?" Then the command fails and tells me that mysqld_db_t is an invalid SELinux context even if the default MySQL data directory is labelled with this context. I am running Fedora 15 on Virtualbox (behaves like an ordinary x86-compatible box) and Amazon EC2 (based on Xen) so the tutorial should be compatible. It is also worth to mention that turning off SELinux globally or just for the MySQL process is not an option, because such a solution will decrease the security of the system if a hacker gains access to the system via the MySQL server. I have never seen this problem before I changed to the Redhat/Fedora architecture, so it could be a distribution specific issue. Any help is highly appreciated

• How to modify PATH variable for X11 during log-in?

Decided to revise my question, based on what I learned there: Essentially, my problem is that I am working on some lab computers (read: no administrative rights) that, if I log in, I need to change the PATH variable as X11 starts. The reason is that I need to change the PATH variable at this time, as opposed to later, is that the Print Screen command seems to "bind" during login (forgive my bad explanation of this). You can see in the work-around I listed in the previous question, that I can make it work by starting a new X, but I was wondering if it is possible to change upon login. If this seems a poor explanation, you can check out the original link for my context and reasoning behind what I'm doing. Any ideas? • DRS: Unknown JNLP Location

  We are using Deployment Rule Sets to limit access to the older JRE to well-known applications like - but are running into a problem. One business critical applications has the following properties (*s to protect info): title: Enterprise Services Repository location: null jar location: http://app.*.com:52400/rep/repository/*.jar jar version: null isArtifact: true The application downloads a .jnlp file, and uses java web start to execute. Since the location is null, this application cannot be targeted by a location rule. And the certificate hash method only works when the application is cached (being ran more than once). If cache storing is off, which is the case in some situations, how can this application be targeted? Or at least told to run with an older JRE on start? This problem is specifically noted in this bug Thanks!

• Can't uninstall SBS 2003 in sbs 2003 -> sbs 2008 migration

  I'm trying to remove sbs from my sbs 2003 server. Also I'm logged in as Administrator. However When I start to go through the wizard it gives me the following error. You must be a member of the Domain Admins, Schema Admins, and Enterprise Admins group. I then did some research and found this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842694) and I came to the point where it says to delete the server from Sites and Services. However when I clicked delete it wanted me to dcpromo the box first. However I have read you have to uninstall exchange first and then dcpromo it to remove AD. Any ideas?

• Increase application performance on Amazon AWS

  I've got a client with an MVC v1 (.NET) application running on a micro instance. On this instance, I've got .NET, IIS 7.5, and MS SQL Server 2008 running to handle the application. The client has reported that it is taking nearly 10 seconds to process each request. Even loading the initial login page takes about that long, then logging in takes that long, etc etc. The currently running instance specs are as follows: 615 MB RAM Intel Xenon CPU E5430 @ 2.66GHz 2.78 GHz 64-Bit Is the memory availability the issue? or is it the processing power? I forsee two options: Change to a larget instance Set up a 2-tier architecture with two micro instances Which of these will give the application better performance? Thanks in advance.

  Just a quick question ( I Hope ) To find out if what I'm trying is even possible. I am trying to share internet connection with Fedora12 as default gateway and XP machine hooked up via NIC using iptables commands as shown in Mark Sobell's book 'A Practical Guide To Fedora And Red Hat Enterprise Linux' These are the commands as placed in /etc/rc.local iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -j LOG iptables -t NAT -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE I did flip the in and out parameters to match my NIC configuration ( as opposed to example from book ) but other than that followed example. One thing to note is that Sobell did not mention whether this should work with mix of Linux and XP. One other note ( maybe meaningless ) is that I do have samba working between the two machines. My question is, is there any way to share the same Coldfusion instance for every virtual host, mantaining the sites webroot outside of the cfusion folder? • Can I provision half a core as a virtual CPU?

  I am virtualization newbie. Please advise on these questions. Please note using a commercial VM software like Citrix or VMware is not a choice for me. I have at my disposal a couple of 2x 4 core servers with 32 GB RAM. I need to create 16 VMs on each server to test some web applications. Can I provision half a core as a virtual CPU for each VM? To my best knowledge I can't do so on Xen. Is it possible on KVM or some other free open source VM solution? If it's not possible to assign half a core, how do I ensure that uniform processing power is available for all VMs? Since the job is to create separate instances for hosting 16 web apps in a physical server, do you recommend setting up a private cloud using Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud as a better option? Is there HA solution under KVM, like Remus for Xen?
