• Lucene and .NET Part I

  I’ve playing around with Lucene.NET and trying to get a feeling of what was required to develop and implement a full business application using it. As you would imagine, many things are required for you to implement a robust solution for indexing content and searching it afterwards. Lucene is a great and robust solution for indexing content. It offers fast and performance enhanced search engine library available in Java and .NET. You will want to use this library in many particular scenarios: In Windows Azure, to support Full Text Search (a functionality not currently supported by SQL Azure) When storing files outside or not managed by your database (like in large document storage solutions that uses File System) When Full Text Search is not really what you need Lucene is more than a Full Text Search solution. It has several analyzers that let you process and search content in different ways (decomposing sentences, deriving words, removing articles, etc.). When deciding to implement indexing using Lucene, you will need to take into account the following: How content is to be indexed by Lucene and when. Using a service that runs after a specific interval Immediately when content changes When content is to available for searching / Availability of indexed content (as in real time content search) Immediately when content changes = near real time searching After a few minutes.. Ease of maintainability and development Some Technical Concerns.. When indexing content, indexes are locked for writing operations by the Index Writer. This means that Lucene is best designed to index content using single writer approach. When searching, Index Readers take a snapshot of indexes. This has the following implications: Setting up an index reader is a costly task. Your are not supposed to create one for each query or search. A good practice is to create readers and reuse them for several searches. The latter means that even when the content gets updated, you wont be able to see the changes. You will need to recycle the reader. In the second part of this post we will review some alternatives and design considerations.

• The fastest way to encode image+audio for Youtube from command line?

  I have an mp3 and image and I want to make a simple clip to upload onto Youtube. Is there a fast solution? If video formats are so bad designed, then maybe it is possible to use a prerendered video-only clip? This works good except it takes as much time as the audio lasts: ffmpeg -loop_input -r ntsc -i "%IMAGE%" -i "%AUDIO%" -r 1 -acodec copy -shortest -re -force_fps "%VIDEO%" This takes a second but results in a black screen video that is successfully played by a desktop video player but not acceptable by Youtube: ffmpeg -i "%IMAGE%" -i "%AUDIO%" -acodec copy "%VIDEO%" Windows 7. Preserving audio quality is preferred over video quality.

• Windows 7 login screen show only last user and "Other User" icons after profile problem.

  I recently had a profile problem with my Windows 7 PC. My original profile in the registry had ".bak" appended to it and a new profile was created. I was unable to login with the new profile. I fixed this immediate problem by logging on in safe mode. This enabled me to restore my original profile. However, since that moment the login screen now operates differently. Instead of showing icons for all the users with accounts on the PC, it now only shows two icons. The first icon is the last user who logged on and the second icon always shows "Other User". I have tried several different solutions recommended by other people with similar problems, but none of them have fixed the problem. I think the person who started this thread has the same problem, but none of the proposed solutions helped him either. Any help much appreciated.

• Disk Redundancy across different server

  I have 3 servers, all with the same specs: Intel CPU 8 GB RAM Linux or BSD Single 2TB desktop SATA with more than 10K Hours of operation, with only less than 300 GB Used My provider cannot install a second hard drive, but can guarantee me that the drive will be replaced immediately in case of failure, with another equally crappy drive. The likelihood of drive failure is high, and since I can't use RAID, I was thinking about keeping a back up of each machine on all the other machines, so that there are always 2 copies on 2 different drives, plus the original. I would synchronize the drives every hour, with rsync, to guarantee some sort of redundancy, since bandwidth inside the DC is free, so it would be much cheaper than offsite backup. (A daily offiste backup is kept anyhow). What do you think? Any suggestion?

• Windows boots to Black Screen of Death — Is my HDD faulty?

  My wife's PC suddenly stopped booting up properly. It gets as far as the Windows 'loading' screen with the bar scrolling away, but that's as far as it gets for some time, then suddenly flashes up a BSoD barely long enough to see, then the display cuts out. We've got identical PCs, and after swapping components, I established that my PC suffers the same problem if I swap in the HDD. Even if I plug hers in as a second HDD on my machine, it still does the same thing, even though it's booting from mine. I can't even boot her machine from CD or DVD either, so I couldn't even use a recovery disc. I did manage to partially boot my PC into safe mode with the other HDD attached, and it got as far as loading 'crcdisk.sys' and froze. Anybody know what could be wrong with it, or at least how I can get the data off the disk? I'm assuming there's still data on the disk, given that it at least shows me the vista 'loading' screen.

• High CPU usage compared to WinXP. Common aps and actions use 100% CPU cycles

  I'm running Lubunto 14.04.1 LTS. PC is a 2004 HP ze4200 laptop: 1.8 ghz Celeron M with 1 gb RAM and 80 gb drive. Was running fine on WinXP SP3 and I cleaned the drive off to test Lubuntu 14 LTS. No anti-virus is installed yet. I enabled the CPU resource monitor to see how various programs drag the OS. Using Firefox 31 online right now, I see doing basic functions like openning a new tab and scrolling down a page are using 100% CPU time, ocassionally for 10-30 seconds. In fact some pretty basic aps like Leafnote hit 100% for a second. Wordpad never did that. Lubuntu Software Center locks things up at 100% for 10 seconds. Just typing here shows a 60-80% spike every character. Running the mouse around the screen for 10 seconds results in a sustained 100% load during that time. Right now, if I let the PC rest just idling Firefox and not doing anything with it, CPU use bounces from 20-40% all by itself. WinXP idles at 2-10% and it's considered not good for it to be above 20%... something odd must be happening. Sure, XP will give similar higher CPU cycles with program use, but it's not locking and slogging like this. Lubuntu is supposed to be a light OS and by memory usage it is and I'm happy since this is an old PC maxed for memory upgrades. However, being used to doing some tuning and wary of abnormalities going on in the background, the CPU use indicates things going on that I want to know about and perhaps apply a tweek or two. Recommendations are appreciated. And this 300 point "new tags" restriction bites!

• Norton Ghost 15 prompts for a recovery CD when restoring a disk image. Why?

  I used ghost 15 to create a drive image. Now I'm trying to restore that image onto identical hardware to recover. However after the whole image has been placed onto the new disk/hardware, at the end of the copy, ghost is asking me to enter the recovery CD. But the recovery CD is in the danged drive(assuming that the recovery CD is the CD used to recover the image)! So first, if I'm just imaging a drive, why is norton asking me for some recovery CD? Second, what recovery CD is norton talking about, if it's not the ghost CD? Does it want me to give it the windows OS recovery CD that sipped with the original hardware? Damn you norton ghost!!!

• Server only powers (but doesn't POST) when IDE drive is powered

  So after a thunderstorm last night which did a little damage, a Gigabyte server has decided it's going on power on but not POST. If it is POSTing, it's doing a very bad job at telling me. No beeps, nothing. Power seems to reach the components though. CD Drive opens and closes. So after stripping it back, I've found that the difference between this behaviour and deciding it's not going to power on for more than half a second, is having a power cable plugged in to one of the IDE hard drives. Is this normal, or a sign that the PSU has had it?

• how to i lock a Harddrive to a certain drive letter

  i have an external hard drive that i have set to Drive F which on it contains some programs that i have shortcuts on the desktop how i have a second external hard drive which i store my music on which is auto assigned to Drive E, due to someone thinking that Australians love to have f** wings on power plugs for hard drives while power boards have each socket close together i can have both of these hard drives set at the same time my music hard drive i normally only plug up when i sync music to my ipod but on occasion when i unplug my music hard drive and plug my old one back in or at times when i turn on my computer with the music hard drive in, turn off my computer and turn it back on with my old hard drive it's drive letter gets switched to E i get annoyed having to always go into disk management and change the drive letter back to F when this happens so i am wondering if I can lock my hard drive to always be F, if anything else tries to be F it can fail for all i care If there is a batch file i can use that'll go though all the steps of Disk Management to change a drive's letter, that way i can set it up in the startup folder

Once you do, you are presented with two options: download it from HP's server or locate the file locally on your hard disk. In the past, I have had success with downloading it from HP's server. • SQL Server Snapshot Replication Subscriber (Editable or Read-Only)

  I need to create a copy of my SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise database and have it located on the same server as the original. I will be using this second copy of the database as the target of a mostly read-only website. I understand that if I create this copy of the database using snapshot replication that all data changes in the subscriber database will be overwriten in the event of the next replication. The web application will try to write to this database to record login attempts, etc and will fail if its source database is read-only. In my case I do not need to keep these auditing records and they can therefore be overwriten each time a new snapshot is applied. My question is whether SQL Server forces the subcriber database to be read-only and is there any way around this? Thank you, Nate

• Keystone Correction using 3D-Points of Kinect

  With XNA, I am displaying a simple rectangle which is projected onto the floor. The projector can be placed at an arbitrary position. Obviously, the projected rectangle gets distorted according to the projectors position and angle. A Kinect scans the floor looking for the four corners. Now my goal is to transform the original rectangle such that the projection is no longer distorted by basically pre-warping the rectangle. My first approach was to do everything in 2D: First compute a perspective transformation (using OpenCV's warpPerspective()) from the scanned points to the internal rectangle's points und apply the inverse to the rectangle. This seemed to work but was too slow as it couldn't be rendered on the GPU. The second approach was to do everything in 3D in order to use XNA's rendering features. First, I would display a plane, scan its corners with Kinect and map the received 3D-Points to the original plane. Theoretically, I could apply the inverse of the perspective transformation to the plane, as I did in the 2D-approach. However, in since XNA works with a view and projection matrix, I can't just call a function such as warpPerspective() and get the desired result. I would need to compute the new parameters for the camera's view and projection matrix. Question: Is it possible to compute these parameters and split them into two matrices (view and projection)? If not, is there another approach I could use?

• samsung HMX-H100P camcorder and video encoding with mencoder

  Hi everyone, my background is totally not related to video stuff so pardon my newbie style. I own a samsung HMX-H100P camcorder and I'm trying to encode videos to be uploaded to Youtube and Vimeo. First problem: videos generated by the camera with no processing appear like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AANbl_DTuzE when I play them with Totem(Linux) or VideoLan. Second problem: When I try to encode the videos produced by the camera using mencoder I get the video at the resolution I chose but those ugly lines and lagging are still present. Here's the command I use: mencoder $inputFile -aspect 16:9 -of lavf -lavfopts format=psp -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts aglobal=1:vglobal=1:coder=0:vcodec=libx264:acodec=libfaac:vbitrate=4500:abitrate=128 -vf scale=1280:720 -ofps 25000/1001 -o $outputFile Any ideas?   On mac osx terminal, I installed many terminal programs while trying to install a programming library. Now I'm wondering how I delete them. I think some of them include pip, macports, vmenven (or something). I'm not sure what these programs are called but they all are called from the command line using something like "macports..." (so I'm calling them terminal programs). First, how do I tell what terminal programs are installed. Second, how do I delete them. And, to be through, where are the programs stored anyway?

• Installing Windows 7 destroyed my dual boot setup

  I have a laptop on which I have two drives with separate Windows XP installs, one barebones for music production, the other "normal" Windows XP with Office etc. (unfortunately the bios won't give a boot disk choice). Normally I would be presented with two Windows XPs on booting. Selecting the second one would get me into the "normal" installation on disk 1 (C:). Selecting the first in boot order would give me D:\ (disk 2) with the barebones XP. However, I installed Windows 7 Home onto disk 1 (C:), but there were no dual boot options anymore, even though I installed DualBoot Pro and added Windows XP disk D:. The options now show up, but selecting Windows XP just turns into a reboot back to where I started.

  Running "powercfg -energy" under Windows 7 command line, I received a report with following three errors: System Availability Requests:Away Mode Request The program has made a request to enable Away Mode. Requesting Process \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnetwk.exe CPU Utilization:Processor utilization is high The average processor utilization during the trace was high. The system will consume less power when the average processor utilization is very low. Review processor utilization for individual processes to determine which applications and services contribute the most to total processor utilization. Average Utilization (%) 49.25 Platform Power Management Capabilities:PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer. I was wondering for the first error, what does "enable away mode" mean? for the second, what utilization percentage of CPU is reasonable? for the third, what is "PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM)"? • Fine control over zoom and aspect ratio in VLC player

  In VLC Player (v1.01), how do I zoom video and control aspect ratio with fine control, as is possible with Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPCHC)? The standard zoom appears to only support double, normal, quarter size etc, not useful to me at all. An example: I play an older music video file that is in 4:3 aspect ratio. In MPCHC I can use the number pad to zoom in small increments until I have removed the left and right letterbox bars and the video fills the whole screen. I can also stretch and move the video in small increments until I am happy with the aspect ratio and position. I could continue using MPCHC, but I have two displays and really like VLC feature enabling full-screen video on the main screen and the VLC interface (menus etc) on the second. I have not found a way to do this on MPCHC, if anyone knows I'd also be interested to hear.

• Macports Apache Slow to Start/Stop

  I am running OSX 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) with Apache2 from MacPorts for local development, and just recently I noticed it is taking almost a minute to restart Apache. I wouldn't think anything of it except it normally would restart in less than a second. I had all but given up Googling when I noticed that if I turned off the WiFi (I haven't tried hardwire yet) Apache would restart just as it use to. What would cause Apache to take longer to start when I am connected to the LAN? What can be done to mitigate this issue?

• Universal navigation menu across domains

  I'd like to start by saying that I've searched for hours and could not find a definitive answer to my question. Across different sites on different second-level domains exists a universal navigation bar with a collection of roughly 30 links. This universal bar is exactly the same for every page on each domain. The bar's HTML, CSS and JavaScript are all stored in a subfolder for each domain and the HTML is embedded upon serving the page and is not being injected on the client side. None of the links use any rel directives and are as vanilla as can be. My question is about Google's duplicate content rule. Would something like this be considered duplicate content? Matt Cutt's blog post about duplicate content mentions boilerplate repetition, but then he mentions lengthy legalese. Since the text in this universal bar is brief and uses common terms, I wonder if this same rule applies. If this is considered duplicate content, what would be a good way to correct the problem? • Powerbook G4 unresponsive on wake?

  I have a Powerbook G4 17" and I recently updated to the Mac OS 10.5.8 and got a monitor. I put it to sleep by closing the lid and sometimes it resumes normally and sometimes it doesn't. It doesn't matter if it's on sleep for a day or 10 minutes, it just happens randomly. It wakes up, but the screen doesn't flash blue for a few seconds like it normally would, indicating that it found the second monitor. It just wakes up, and a picture appears on both screens and the mouse moves, but nothing responds. The only way I can make it work again is by holding down the power button until it shuts down and then turning it on again. this frustrating because then I have to reopen all my programs and Safari tabs. I tried resetting the PMU by unplugging everything and taking out the batter, then holding the power button for five seconds, but it has the same problem no matter what I do.

• Streaming flash video does not work on my Mac OS X

  Flash videos do not work properly on my Mac. On this Vimeo video, for example, it shows only the beginning frame, and audio stutters like crazy, playing audio for a quarter second or so, then silence, then playing again, etc. I have Flash version 10,0,42,34 on Mac OS 10.5.8. It's a PowerBook G4 (PPC). I tried it in Firefox 3.5.5 and Safari 4.0.3. I tried reinstalling Flash, restarting the computer, and using a fresh user profile in Firefox (so that no extensions are interfering with the site), loading the video fully before playing, but nothing helps. I noticed that youtube videos work better, once loaded enough, although the picture does halt briefly once every 10 or so seconds, even when it's fully loaded.

• If Nvidia Shield can stream a game via WiFi (~150-300Mbps), where is the 1-10Gbps wired streaming?

  Facts: It is surprising and uncharacteristic that a wireless game streaming solution is the *first to hit the market when a 1000mbps+ Ethernet connection would accomplish the same feat with roughly 6x the available bandwidth. 150-300mbps WiFi is in no way superior to a 1000mbps+ LAN connection aside from well wireless mobility. Throughout time, (since the internet was created) wired services have **always come first yet in this particular case, the opposite seems to be true. We had wired internet first, wired audio streaming, and wired video streaming all before their wireless counterparts. Why? Largely because the wireless bandwidth was and is inferior. Even today despite being significantly better and capable of a lot more, it is still inferior to a wired connection. Situation: Chief among these is that NVIDIA’s Shield handheld game console will be getting a microconsole-like mode, dubbed “Shield Console Mode”, that will allow the handheld to be converted into a more traditional TV-connected console. In console mode Shield can be controlled with a Bluetooth controller, and in accordance with the higher resolution of TVs will accept 1080p game streaming from a suitably equipped PC, versus 720p in handheld mode. With that said 1080p streaming will require additional bandwidth, and while 720p can be done over WiFi NVIDIA will be requiring a hardline GigE connection for 1080p streaming (note that Shield doesn’t have Ethernet, so this is presumably being done over USB). Streaming aside, in console mode Shield will also support its traditional local gaming/application functionality. - http://www.anandtech.com/show/7435/nvidia-consolidates-game-streaming-tech-under-gamestream-brand-announces-shield-console-mode ^ This is not acceptable to me for a number of reasons not to mention the ridiculousness of having a little screen+controller unit sitting there while using a secondary controller and screen instead. That kind of redundant absurdity exemplifies how wrong of a solution that is. They need a second product for this solution without the screen or controller for it to make sense... at which point your just buying a little computer that does what most other larger computers do better. While this secondary project will provide a wired connection, it still shouldn't be necessary to purchase a Shield to have this benefit. Not only this but Intel's WiDi claims game streaming support as well - wirelessly. Where is the wired streaming? All that is required, by my understanding, is the ability to decode H.264 video compression and transmit control/feedback so by any logical comparison, one (Nvidia especially) should have no difficulty in creating an application for PC's (win32/64 environment) that does the exact same thing their android app does. I have 2 video cards capable of streaming (encoding) H.264 so by right they must be capable of decoding it I would think. I should be able to stream to my second desktop or my laptop both of which by hardware comparison are superior to the Shield. I haven't found anything stating plans to allow non-shield owners to do this. Can a third party create this software or does it hinge on some limitation that only Nvidia can overcome? Reiteration of questions: Is there a technical reason (non marketing) for why Nvidia opted to bottleneck the streaming service with a wireless connection limiting the resolution to 720p and introducing intermittent video choppiness when on a wired connection one could achieve, presumably, 1080p with significantly less or zero choppiness? Is there anything limiting developers from creating a PC/Desktop application emulating the same H.264 decoding functionality that circumvents the need to get an Nvidia Shield altogether? (It is not a matter of being too cheap to support Nvidia - I have many Nvidia cards that aren't being used. One should not have to purchase specialty hardware when = hardware already exists) Same questions go for Intel Widi also. I am just utterly perplexed that there are wireless live streaming solution and yet no wired. How on earth can wireless be the goto transmission medium? Is there another solution that takes advantage of H.264 video compression allowing live streaming over a wired connection? Edit: Maybe this will be the solution I am looking for but I still find it hard to believe that they would be the first and after wireless solutions already exist.
