• ms excel 2010 in windows xp - when open workbook the data is formatted differently than when i saved it

  I haven't been able to find an answer to this. I have multiple files that I use regularly in excel that now have cell formats of "date". Every single cell in the entire workbook (all sheets) is now formatted as "date". The problem is that I lost my formatting for percents, numbers years, etc and now everything is converted to date (xx/xx/xxxx). I am able to open previously saved versions of a file (prior to me having the problem) and the cells are formatted as I intend them to be (percents, numbers, general, as well as dates). Since this has happened on a couple different files recently, I am wondering how this is happening and how do I prevent it from happening in the future. I cannot cure the problem just by highlighting the entire sheet and converting back to general because I lose all my percents and number formatting. • Custom PCI bracket with support, for custom PCB?

  I am considering to put a custom PCB card that I made, into my computer. It won't go on any PCI connector, it plugs in on a USB connector on the motherboard, via a ribbon cable. I need thou to plug a device to it; which means that either I leave the PCB outside the case, hanging by the ribbon (bad idea), or I could put it in a PCI slot, using a bracket. The issue is that the brackets that I have, do not have tabs, so I have no way to screw the PCB on them. I was hoping to find something that would allow me to put the PCB on it, and then just fit it in the PCI bracket opening, like this: http://www.idotpc.com/TheStore/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=1203&idcategory=0 This one won't fit the bill since the holes are too close apart, compared to the one that I have already on the PCB (and can't make more holes).   I would like to switch from desktop-based e-mail software (Thunderbird) to a web-based solution that I run on my own web server. I have already tried out Roundcube and while it does work reasonably well so far there is one great feature from Thunderbird that seems to be missing - it doesn't allow me to have a unified mailbox for multiple IMAP accounts. Can anybody recommend a web-based IMAP client that has this feature?

When I was looking for an solution for encrypted (per MPPE) connection, I found a lot of information about patching the kernel etc. - so it definitly works after some work. But all these information is pretty old (2005-2006). Is it the same solution nowadays? I am not asking for a complete instruction (only if it's short) - I am more asking for a link to the right solution.

• ssh connection with full tab key support

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 installation. When I open terminal, tab key works fine e.g. i type "apt-get install mysql" then press tab and see all options. But when I connect via ssh - tab key works only before first space. So it will do nothing in above example. I tried connect with different clients (ssh, putty, etc), and always same behavior. My question is: how to make tab key work properly? Is problem in server or client?

• Does OS X support linux-like features?

  I have been using XP for almost a decade. Contrary to popular belief, it has served me well. In the last 4 years I don't remember ever having it crash on me. It has the most stable GUI I have ever used. However, an OS is only as good as it's GUI AND command line combined. Windows command line is awful and totally useless. So I have been using Ubuntu for a couple years and Debian on my servers. The only problem is that Gnome applications (ubuntu 6-10) constantly crash on me (Ubuntu Studio was the most unstable OS I ever used). I have high quality Gigabyte, MSI, and Asus motherboards and CPU's from old Semprons/Athlons to Celerons/Core 2 Quads. What are the odds that every PC I have ever owned can't remain stable with a linux GUI? Not to mention that Adobe CSx Suite doesn't work on linux. Anyway, I am now looking at moving to a MAC in the hope of finding a stable GUI and a feature-packed command line. Does Mac OS have an integrated command line where I can do linux-like-awesomeness like rsync, ssh, wget, crong jobs, package updates, and git without having an unstable GUI? Basically, until the linux GUI applications get a little better, is OS X what I need?

  I dont need wireless. I am expecting very heavy traffic, with possibly thousands of tcp connections open at one time. This would require that the router has good hardware. I also need to limit the different services i will provide. Lets say i need to guarantee 60% of all the bandwidth to HTTP, 10% FTP, and 10% for Mail... So the router software must have flexible QoS options as well. I don't know which one to chooose, because this information is usually not given on the router specs.

• mod_rewrite and Apache questions

  We have an interesting situation in relation to some help desk software that we are trying to setup. This is a web based software application that allows customers and staff to log into it and access tickets and supply updates, etc. The challenge we are having deals with the two different domains that we use and the mod_rewrite rules to make it all work with our SSL certificate that is only bound to one of the domains. I will list the use case scenarios below and the challenges that we are having. If you access http://support.domain1.com/support then it redirects fine to https://support.domain2.com/support If you access http://support.domain2.com/support then it redirects fine to https://support.domain2.com/support If you access https://support.domain1.com/support then it throws an error of "server cannot be found" If you access https://support.domain1.com/support/ after having visited https://support.domain2.com/support then you are presented with a "this connection is untrusted" error about the certificate only being valid for the domain2 domain instead of the domain1 domain name I have tried just about every mod_rewrite rule that I can think of to help make this work and I have not been able to locate the correct combination. I was curious if anyone had some ideas on how to make the redirects work correctly. In the end, we are needing all customers and staff to land at https://support.domain2.com/support regardless of the previous URL combinations that they enter, like listed above. • Delphi 2010 differs in Canvas transparency compared to Delphi 7?

  I'm porting some very old code from Delph7 to Delphi2010 with a few changes as possible to the existing code base for the usual reasons. First: the good news for anyone who hasn't jumped yet: it's not as daunting as it may look! I'm actually pleased (& surprised) at how easy 1,000,000+ lines of code have moved across. And what a relief to be back on the leading edge! Delphi 2010 has so many great enhancements. However, I'm having a cosmetic problem with some TStringGrids and TDbGrids descendants. In the last century (literally!) someone wrote the two methods below. The first method is used to justify text. When run in Delphi 2010, the new text and the unjustified text to both appear in the cells written to. Of course it's a mess visually, almost illegible. Sometimes, as a result of the second method is use, the grid cells are actually semi-transparent, with text from the window below showing through. (Again, not pretty!) It appears to me that Delphi 2010's TDbGrid and TStringGrid have some differences in the way they handle transparency? I haven't much experience in this area of Delphi (in fact, I have no idea what the 2nd method is actually doing!) and was hoping someone could give me some pointers on what's going on and how to fix it. • How do I get folder size with Exchange Web Services 2010 Managed API?

  I'm attempting to use EWS 2010 Managed API to get the total size of a user's mailbox. I haven't found a web service method to get this data, so I figured I would try to calculate it. I found one seemingly-applicable question on another site about finding mailbox sizes with EWS 2007, but either I'm not understanding what it's asking me to do, or that method just doesn't work with EWS 2010. Noodling around in the code insight, I was able to write what I thought was a method that would traverse the folder structure recursively and result in a combined total for all folders inside the Inbox: private int traverseChildFoldersForSize(Folder f) { int folderSizeSum = 0; if (f.ChildFolderCount > 0) { foreach (Folder c in f.FindFolders(new FolderView(10000))) { folderSizeSum += traverseChildFoldersForSize(c); } } folderSizeSum += (int)f.ManagedFolderInformation.FolderSize; return folderSizeSum; } (Assumes there aren't more than 10,000 folders inside a given folder. Figure that's a safe bet...) Unfortunately, this doesn't work. I'm initiating the recursion with this code: Folder root = Folder.Bind(svc, WellKnownFolderName.Inbox); int totalSize = traverseChildFoldersForSize(root); But a Null Pointer Exception is thrown, essentially saying that [folder].ManagedFolderInformation is a null object reference. For clarity, I also attempted to just get the size of the root folder: Console.Write(root.ManagedFolderInformation.FolderSize.ToString()); Which threw the same NPE exception, so I know that it's not just that once you get to a certain depth in the directory tree that ManagedFolderInformation doesn't exist. Any ideas on how to get the total size of the user's mailbox? Am I barking up the wrong tree?

  I developed a browser-deployed full-text search app in FlashBuilder which communicates RESTfully with a remote web-server. The software fits into a tiny niche--it is for use with ancient languages not modern ones, and there's no way I'm going to make any money on it but I did spend a lot of time on it. Now that Apple won't allow Flash on the iPad, I'm looking for a 100% javascript solution and was led to consider GWT. It looked promising, but one of the apps being "showcased" as a stellar example of what can be done with GWT has this disclaimer on their website (names {removed} to protect the potentially innocent) : Your current web browser (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/4.1.249.1045 Safari/532.5) is not officially supported by {company and product name were here}. If you experience any problems using this site please install either Microsoft Internet Explorer 6+ or Mozilla Firefox 3.5+ before contacting {product name was here} Support. What gives when GWT apps aren't "officially" supported on Chrome? What grade (A, B, C, D, F) would you give to GWT for cross-browser support? For folks who don't get these kinds of letter grades, A is "excellent" and "F" is failure, and "C" is average. Thanks for your opinions.

• Any HTTP proxies with explicit, configurable support for request/response buffering and delayed conn

  When dealing with mobile clients it is very common to have multisecond delays during the transmission of HTTP requests. If you are serving pages or services out of a prefork Apache the child processes will be tied up for seconds serving a single mobile client, even if your app server logic is done in 5ms. I am looking for a HTTP server, balancer or proxy server that supports the following: A request arrives to the proxy. The proxy starts buffering in RAM or in disk the request, including headers and POST/PUT bodies. The proxy DOES NOT open a connection to the backend server. This is probably the most important part. The proxy server stops buffering the request when: A size limit has been reached (say, 4KB), or The request has been received completely, headers and body Only now, with (part of) the request in memory, a connection is opened to the backend and the request is relayed. The backend sends back the response. Again the proxy server starts buffering it immediately (up to a more generous size, say 64KB.) Since the proxy has a big enough buffer the backend response is stored completely in the proxy server in a matter of miliseconds, and the backend process/thread is free to process more requests. The backend connection is immediately closed. The proxy sends back the response to the mobile client, as fast or as slow as it is capable of, without having a connection to the backend tying up resources. I am fairly sure you can do 4-6 with Squid, and nginx appears to support 1-3 (and looks like fairly unique in this respect). My question is: is there any proxy server that empathizes these buffering and not-opening-connections-until-ready capabilities? Maybe there is just a bit of Apache config-fu that makes this buffering behaviour trivial? Any of them that it is not a dinosaur like Squid and that supports a lean single-process, asynchronous, event-based execution model? (Siderant: I would be using nginx but it doesn't support chunked POST bodies, making it useless for serving stuff to mobile clients. Yes cheap 50$ handsets love chunked POSTs... sigh)

• Login for webapp, needs to be available for support staff

  I know the title is a little off, but it's hard to explain the problem in a short sentence. I am the administrator of a legacy webapp that lets users create surveys and distribute them to a group of people. We have two kinds of "users". Authorized licenseholders which does all setup themselves. Clients who just want to have a survey run, but still need a user (because the webapp has "User" as the top entity in a surveyenvironment.) Sometimes users in #1 want us to do the setup for them (which we offer to do). This means that we have to login as them. This is also how we do support: we login as them and then follow them along, guiding them. Which brings me to my dilemma. Currently our security is below par. But this makes it simple for us to do support. We do want to increase our security, and one thing I have been considering is just doing the normal hashing to DB, however, we need to be able to login as a customer, and if they change their password without telling us, and the password is hashed in the db, we have no way of knowing it. So I was thinking of some kind of twoway encryption for the passwords. Either that or some kind of master password. Any suggestions? (The platform is classic ASP... I said it was legacy...)

  Hello I have a number of rich:inplaceInput tags in RichFaces which represent numbers in an array. The validator allows integers only. When a user clicks in an input and changes a value, how can I get the bean to sort the array given the new number and reRender the list of rich:inplaceInput tags so that they're in numerical order? The table is complicated and I've specified id="Admin" (ie the whole table) to reRender as I've not found a way to send more localised values to the backing bean through the inplaceInput. This question is about how to use a4j:support action attribute to call the sort method so that when the reRender rerenders the component, it outputs the list in sorted order. I have the sort method working ok when I click a button to sort, but I want to have the list sorted automatically as soon as a new valid value is entered into the inplaceInput component. Thanks

• Problem finding the difference in days between two dates

  I have been using a tidy little routine that I found here to calculate the difference in days between two dates in AS3. I am getting some strange results and I am wondering if any of you inter-codal-mega-lords can shed some light? Why is Q1 of 2010 coming up one day short, when in all other cases the routine is performing fine? • Good Hosting Providers With Zend Framework Support

  I currently use ixwebhosting for my hosting services. They're cheap and work (most of the time). The databases are horribly slow, the servers are horribly slow, and their support (though usually prompt) is tough to deal with. That being said, they're cheap, I've got like 20 domains hosted in my account, none of them are high volume, and they work JUST good enough- until today. This isn't meant to be a condemnation of ixwh though. Their prices are very low for what they do offer and most things work just fine, most of the time. I need to be able to host web apps written with Zend Framework in a fairly easy fashion. The server performance can't be worse than what I've already had (a pretty low hurdle to clear), and I don't want to spend $30/mo. These are not money making websites- they're projects. My requirements are PHP 5.3, ZF support, MySQL databases, multiple domains- not much. Who should I look at, and who should I look out for?   Hi at all, I have some problem with multiple screen support, I work with dp(dpi) for specify the layout_heigth and layout_width and I hope that is the better way to support multiple screen, but when I tried with two smartphone I meet two different result. In light of this announcement I thought I would put together some thoughts about how I see this development. I think the key word in this announcement is "commercial", nowhere does Oracle announce the "death of GlassFish" in contrary Oracle reaffirm; GlassFish Server Open Source Edition continues to be the strategic foundation for Java EE reference implementation going forward. And for developers, updates will be delivered as needed to continue to deliver a great developer experience for GlassFish Server Open Source Edition so GlassFish is not about to go away soon. In a similar fashion RedHat do not provide commercial support for WildFly and only provide commercial support for JBoss EAP. Admittedly JBoss EAP and WildFly are much closer together than GlassFish and WebLogic but WildFly and JBoss EAP are absolutely NOT the same thing. The key going forward to the viability of GlassFish as a production platform is how the GlassFish community develops; How often does the community release binary builds? How open is the community to bug fixes? How much engineering resource does Oracle commit to GlassFish? At this stage we just don't know the answers to these questions. If the GlassFish open source project continues on it's current trajectory without a commercial support offering then I don't see much of a problem. Oracle just have to work harder to sell migration paths to WebLogic in the same way as RedHat have to sell migration paths from WildFly to JBoss EAP. In the meantime C2B2 continues to offer support for your operational JEE applications running on GlassFish and we will endeavour to work with the community to get any bugs fixed. Read the complete article here. 6 Facts About GlassFish Announcement By Bruno.Borges Fact #1 - GlassFish Open Source Edition is not dead GlassFish Server Open Source Edition will remain the reference implementation of Java EE. The current trunk is where an implementation for Java EE 8 will flourish, and this will become the future GlassFish 5.0. Calling "GlassFish is dead" does no good to the Java EE ecosystem. The GlassFish Community will remain strong towards the future of Java EE. Without revenue-focused mind, this might actually help the GlassFish community to shape the next version, and set free from any ties with commercial decisions. Fact #2 - OGS support is not over As I said before, GlassFish Server Open Source Edition will continue. Main change is that there will be no more future commercial releases of Oracle GlassFish Server. New and existing OGS 2.1.x and 3.1.x commercial customers will continue to be supported according to the Oracle Lifetime Support Policy. In parallel, I believe there's no other company in the Java EE business that offers commercial support to more than one build of a Java EE application server. This new direction can actually help customers and partners, simplifying decision through commercial negotiations. Fact #3 - WebLogic is not always more expensive than OGS Oracle GlassFish Server ("OGS") is a build of GlassFish Server Open Source Edition bundled with a set of commercial features called GlassFish Server Control and license bundles such as Java SE Support. OGS has at the moment of this writing the pricelist of U$ 5,000 / processor. One information that some bloggers are mentioning is that WebLogic is more expensive than this. Fact 3.1: it is not necessarily the case. The initial edition of WebLogic is called "Standard Edition" and falls into a policy where some “Standard Edition” products are licensed on a per socket basis. As of current pricelist, US$ 10,000 / socket. If you do the math, you will realize that WebLogic SE can actually be significantly more cost effective than OGS, and a customer can save money if running on a CPU with 4 cores or more for example. Quote from the price list: “When licensing Oracle programs with Standard Edition One or Standard Edition in the product name (with the exception of Java SE Support, Java SE Advanced, and Java SE Suite), a processor is counted equivalent to an occupied socket; however, in the case of multi-chip modules, each chip in the multi-chip module is counted as one occupied socket.” For more details speak to your Oracle sales representative - this is clearly at list price and every customer typically has a relationship with Oracle (like they do with other vendors) and different contractual details may apply. And although OGS has always been production-ready for Java EE applications, it is no secret that WebLogic has always been more enterprise, mission critical application server than OGS since BEA. Different editions of WLS provide features and upgrade irons like the WebLogic Diagnostic Framework, Work Managers, Side by Side Deployment, ADF and TopLink bundled license, Web Tier (Oracle HTTP Server) bundled licensed, Fusion Middleware stack support, Oracle DB integration features, Oracle RAC features (such as GridLink), Coherence Management capabilities, Advanced HA (Whole Service Migration and Server Migration), Java Mission Control, Flight Recorder, Oracle JDK support, etc. Fact #4 - There’s no major vendor supporting community builds of Java EE app servers There are no major vendors providing support for community builds of any Open Source application server. For example, IBM used to provide community support for builds of Apache Geronimo, not anymore. Red Hat does not commercially support builds of WildFly and if I remember correctly, never supported community builds of former JBoss AS. Oracle has never commercially supported GlassFish Server Open Source Edition builds. Tomitribe appears to be the exception to the rule, offering commercial support for Apache TomEE. Fact #5 - WebLogic and GlassFish share several Java EE implementations It has been no secret that although GlassFish and WebLogic share some JSR implementations (as stated in the The Aquarium announcement: JPA, JSF, WebSockets, CDI, Bean Validation, JAX-WS, JAXB, and WS-AT) and WebLogic understands GlassFish deployment descriptors, they are not from the same codebase. Fact #6 - WebLogic is not for GlassFish what JBoss EAP is for WildFly WebLogic is closed-source offering. It is commercialized through a license-based plus support fee model. OGS although from an Open Source code, has had the same commercial model as WebLogic. Still, one cannot compare GlassFish/WebLogic to WildFly/JBoss EAP. It is simply not the same case, since Oracle has had two different products from different codebases. The comparison should be limited to GlassFish Open Source / Oracle GlassFish Server versus WildFly / JBoss EAP.
