  • What are the default groups assigned to the first user in Ubuntu Server?

    I just made a silly mistake on my Ubuntu Server box: I added myself to a group using usermod -G, after which I discovered the -a option... The result is that I am now out of the admin group, and lost my sudo rights. I can sort that out, but I want to know what other groups I may been removed from? My user was the first one so what I'm looking for is a list of groups that the first user gets added to at installation time.

  • How can I connect to a CIFS/SMB share on a non-default port?

    I'm trying to get a contractor connected to a CIFS share (port 445). He's not a big shop (so no go on using VPN). His ISP blocks outgoing connections on port 445. I've been doing some rsync to ftp madness as a workaround to have the share available to him, but it's getting out of control -- we're syncing nearly 40GB a day to an external ftp site and it's going to be much easier just to have him connect and only grab the stuff he needs. So... I can have the CIFS share open to the internet (filtered to allow access to his IP only) on port 446. How the heck can he connect to that? I looked through "net use" and didn't see anything about using another port.

  • Can I save an Apache environment variable value with SetEnv?

    I am running Apache 2.2 with Tomcat 6 and have several layers of URL rewriting going on in both Apache with RewriteRule and in Tomcat. I want to pass through the original REQUEST_URI that Apache sees so that I can log it properly for "page not found" errors etc. In httpd.conf I have a line: SetEnv ORIG_URL %{REQUEST_URI} and in the mod_jk.conf, I have: JkEnvVar ORIG_URL Which i thought should make the value available via request.getAttribute("ORIG_URL") in Servlets. However, all that I see is "%{REQUEST_URI}", so I assume that SetEnv doesn't interpret the %{...} syntax. What is the right way to get the URL the user requested in Tomcat?

    From the official Microsoft docs: Detecting the Idle State The Task Scheduler service will verify that the computer is in an idle state every 15 minutes. The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the past 15 minutes and if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. Besides, any presentation type application that sets the ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED flag will make Task Scheduler to not consider the system as being idle. In Windows 7, Task Scheduler considers a processor as idle even when low priority threads (thread priority < normal) execute. Is there any way to change the time to less than 15 minutes minutes? Am I assuming this hard-coded and impossible? My Google-fu has eluded me so far and I found nothing, but wanted to check here before giving up.

    Does any one knows a way to configure a cisco router with multiple gateways - multiple gateways of last resort? Anyone has a sugestion? I mean will this config work if the link on 2.2.2.2 fails? Will the router choose the other network 3.3.3.3, if the link 2.2.2.2 fails?

    My question is very basic in nature. Is the mount point for external media (like USB) always /media? Because in a Debian system, if I plug in any USB device that goes to the /media folder. So is it the case with all the other Linux flavors like Fedora, Ubuntu, etc. If a USB device is automatically mounted will it always go to the /media directory?

  • php include path problem:Same code works on Ubuntu default Apache and php conf, but not on CentOS

    So the same code works on my ubuntu server but when I upload it to my dedicated hosting server running CentOS it seems to add an extra prefix of .:/usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php: I tried setting includepath to different things but it just doesn't work. the file is in a directory called language in the same folder as the file that is including it and I'm using : include dirname(FILE).DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR."language".DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR."storage.inc"; and include dirname(__FILE__)."/language/language.php"; and include "language/language.php"; and alot of other combinations but I can't get it to find the file.   • Email error 'Default email client is not properly installed' after installing Bugzilla 3.6.3 on Windows Home Server 2011

    I have been using Bugzilla fine on the older 32-bit Windows Home Server and I have now started a migration to the newer Windows Home Server 2011 with a new machine and a fresh Bugzilla install of 3.6.3. All goes well until I try to check out the email action and I get 'Could not perform this operation because the defaulty mail client in not properly installed. Is this a security /firewall issue? I dont know enough about servers to know what to look for, so any help will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

  • Why do Windows 7 & 8 have different default behaviour when trying to modify contents of protected folder

    Here's the situation: I have a Windows 7 PC and a Windows 8 PC and I'm logged in as the same domain user on both machines. My domain user is in the local Administrator group on both. When I run cmd.exe on each machine and then attempt to do this (also on both machines) mkdir "c:\Program Files\cheese" the Windows 8 PC gives an "Access Denied" error, while it works fine on the Windows 7 PC. I understand that C:\Program Files is a protected folder and I'm not interested in a debate on the morals of writing to such a folder directly. But I am interested in understanding what exactly has changed in Windows 8 to cause this. I don't seem to be able to find anything that acknowledges or explains this change in behaviour in Windows 8.

  • How do I restore system default settings on Linux Mint KDE?

    I did something weird and now my text size is like 3pt on every system window, but when I go in and change my window fonts to larger to something that looks normal, it makes my clock, bash, and other fonts absolutely gigantic. Is there any way I can just roll back my system and it's settings? It wouldn't be much bother as I installed the OS yesterday. I'd hate to have to reinstall entirely though, but I guess it's an option.

    When creating a diff patch with Git Shell in Windows (when using GitHub for Windows), the character encoding of the patch will be UCS-2 Little Endian according to Notepad++ (see the screenshots below). How can I change this behavior, and force git to create patches with ANSI or UTF-8 without BOM character encoding? It causes a problem because UCS-2 Little Endian encoded patches can not be applied, I have to manually convert it to ANSI.

    I have a machine running a java app talking to a mysql instance running on the same instance. the app uses jdbc4 drivers from mysql. I keep getting com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException at random times. Here is the whole message. Could not open JDBC Connection for transaction; nested exception is com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: The last packet successfully received from the server was25899 milliseconds ago.The last packet sent successfully to the server was 25899 milliseconds ago, which is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. For mysql, the value of global 'wait_timeout' and 'interactive_timeout' is set to 3600 seconds and 'connect_timeout' is set to 60 secs. the wait timeout value is much higher than the 26 secs(25899 msecs). mentioned in the exception trace. I use dbcp for connection pooling and here is spring bean config for the datasource. <bean id="dataSource" destroy-method="close" class="org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource" > <property name="driverClassName" value="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"/> <property name="url" value="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/db"/> <property name="username" value="xxx"/> <property name="password" value="xxx" /> <property name="poolPreparedStatements" value="false" /> <property name="maxActive" value="3" /> <property name="maxIdle" value="3" /> </bean> Any idea why this could be happening?   • How do you configure IIS 7 to use a subdirectory as the default document?

    So I have a website running on a discount asp.net account, and I put an asp.net mvc app in a subdirectory. If my url is 'www.website.com' and my app is in directory 'sample', then 'www.website.com/sample' will execute the mvc app. My problem is that I want the app to be shown when you go to 'www.website.com' not just 'www.website.com/sample'. I have access to the IIS Manager, and I'm sure there are many ways to do this. What's the best way to do this?
