• Safely removing my linux dual boot

  Currently, I dual boot with win7 and opensuse 12.1. Is it okay if I first restore the MBR for win7, and then format the linux drives? Or would it be better for me to first format the linux drives, and then restore the MBR? The reason I ask this is sometimes I get nasty errors when I try and boot into my win7 cd in the latter method. Is it possible to restore the MBR without having to boot into the win7 cd? Like, can I remove linux using the disk management utility in win7, and then fix the mbr while I'm still in win7, or do I have to boot into the win7 cd? If I can do this, how do I go about doing so? Thank you. EDIT::::: The spamming of f8 didn't work, it just made loud beeping noises, so I decided to simply boot into my windows disk and use the bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr command. Note: I haven't formatted my linux partition yet. After I did that, I restarted my computer, and nothing happened. Basically, GRUB is still the MBR and I'm still able to access openSUSE. I think the reason why this is happening is because I think my GRUB is on a separate partion than the linux OS. Here is a picture of my diskmgmt in win7: . openSUSE did all the partioning stuff for me. All I know is that the 40gb that is there is where openSUSE is installed, but I have no clue what's on the 6.05gb and the 14.75gb partitions. Can anyone help me find which partition GRUB is on, and then remove it so I can restore the windows MBR? Thank you.

• Exchange Server 2010: move mailboxes from recoveded and mounted edb to user's mailbox

  One of our exchange servers crashed, and I am trying to recover the mailboxes. We had 1 exchange 2003 server named "apex" and 1 exchange 2010 server named "2008Enterprise. the exchange 2010 server named "2008Enterprise" crashed. I created a new exchange 2010 server named "Providence". I ran the command on Providence: New-MailboxDatabase -Recovery -Name JBCMail -Server Providence -EdbFilePath "c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147\Mailbox Database 0579285147.edb" -LogFolderPath "c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147" this command executed and finished without error I then ran the command: eseutil /p E00 this command was executed from the below directory: c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147 I then mounted the JBCMail with the mount command note: I do not have my full typed command. Inside my Exchange Management Console (EMC) I can view the new mailbox database named JBCMail. The JBCMail database is show as mounted on the exchange server named Providence. I can see the crashed Exchange server named 2008Exchange. In the EMC the crashed exchange server states the Copy Status under ServerConfiguration-Mailbox is ServiceDown. From here I need to recover three mailboxes The mail boxes are on the apex server. How do I move the mailboxs from apex to Providence? How do I restore the mailboxes from JBCmail mounted database to the user's mailbox? I do not fully understand how to use the Restore-Mailbox command because when I use this command it tries to restore the mailbox to the dead apex server. • Windows 7 Not Starting and System Repair Not Loading

  I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 When turning on my PC I keep receiving a black screen with the option to use System Repair or Start Normally. Both options lead me to the System Repair background except no matter how long I wait the system restore options never show up. Choosing F8 and running all of the options including safe mode encounters the same result above. I tried to to use 2 system recovery disks 32x and 64x I downloaded and both lead to similiar results. When I choose System Repair running from the disk the System Repair Question asking to select a language pops ups but after this no matter how long I wait no other options appear. Next after restarting and selecting F8 (after hitting f12 and running from CD) I choose 'Run From Safe Mode with Command Prompt' I am able to run all of the options from System Restore with differing results: Startup Repair: Choosing this ends up in system repair indefinitely (left running 12 hrs) System Restore: Does Nothing. PC thinks for a second and then stops. When selecting ShutDown I see an error message stating there are no restore points. System Image Recovery: Service Cannot be started in Safe Mode Windows Memory Diagnostic: Runs test but then leads to system repair background which never loads system repair Command Prompt: chkdsk /r -Cannot Lock Current Drive...write protected. chkdsk /f -Cannot Lock Current Drive...write protected. bootcfg - Cannot open Boot.Ini file bootcfg - Ran all 3 (rebuildBcd, FixMbr and Fixboot) but PC still goes to System Repair background with no repair options popping up upon restart (without recovery CD). I'm on the verge of purchasing a boot utility disk for $50 unless there is anything else short of "take it to a computer shop" that somebody can suggest I try.

• Windows 7 boots to black screen with blinking cursor

  I have an Alienware M17x that dual boots into Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 Home Premium. Currently, the computer starts at the GRUB loader and will boot into Ubuntu, but if I try to boot into Windows, I immediately get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. I have run chkdsk /R on both the main Windows 7 (/dev/dm-0p3) partition and the recovery partition (/dev/dm-0p2). I set the main Windows 7 partition to be active. I also tried running in the recovery console the commands bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildbcd None of these helped and the last set of commands deletes grub, which I then have to reinstall from Ubuntu. I think the last thing I did in windows before this started was install the newest ATI driver for my video card. This would suggest using system restore, and I actually had a restore point earlier (after the problem started), but after whatever I did that restore point does not appear in the list on the recovery disk any more, so I cannot do a system restore. Is there anything else I can try to make Windows boot properly again? Edit: Running the suggested commands bootsect /nt60 c: bcdboot c:\windows /s c: was also ineffective.

Presumably, this triggers the termination of the other services and Trunk is actually doing its job.So, coould this just be a timing issue and we need to increase the tolerance level (i.e restart count) or do we need to address the 0xa08990002 error in vmd?

• Apps won't start after vanilla reboot

  I had Adobe and Norton nagging me to reboot, so I did that -- clicked Reboot from the Start button. Everything seemed pretty normal as it shut down and came back up, but once up a bunch of apps won't start. The first one I noticed was Firefox. It would flash the disk light normally, but never appear on the screen. Then I tried to bring up an OpenOffice Calc window and same thing. I tried to bring up MS Word, and the splash screen appeared, but never the main screen, and the splash screen just sat there, with a swirly over it. But I tried Solitaire, Notepad++, Paint, and several others, and they popped up just fine. And I'm typing this from IE 8, which, if anything, came up faster than usual. When I try to open up "Network and Sharing Center" the window appears, but nothing appears in it, and eventually it's tagged "not responding". When I kill that window I get (after a delay) "Windows Explorer is not responding", and when I say "OK" the screen resets. I tried rebooting again, and no joy -- same as before. Have done nothing particularly strange on this box, and it's not generally at significant risk for malware. I haven't installed anything new other than the afore-mentioned updates. One other thing: Several minutes after rebooting I get the message "Error: Unable to start Bluetooth Stack Service." The Bluetooth radio is turned on, and I rarely have anything Bluetooth attached, and I don't recall that I've ever seen this message before. Added: Looking at Event Viewer, I'm getting a lot of "The description for Event ID 1 from source xxx cannot be found." Is there any significance to this? Added: I'm looking at restoring from backup, but the procedure is, at best, unclear. Is it sufficient to restore from "Backup and Restore Center", or must I restore from the restore DVD first?

• Multiboot USB (OSX only): How to customize partition name?

  Trying to deal with all the Mac OSX recovery disks I've got by moving them to bootable USB images. I've got a big USB drive with multiple partitions for each recovery disk, and it's easy to use Disk Utility to "restore" the recovery DVD to a partition. When I boot my target Mac while holding down the Alt key, I can see all my bootable images and they work great. Problem is, they've all got the same name: "Mac OS X Install DVD." I manage Macs of various vintages. If my target Mac needs 10.6.3 for example, my only option seems to be to try each one until I get past the "Mac OSX can't be installed on this computer" message. I originally named my partitions with the OSX revision number, but that name is replaced by the disk image name during Disk Utility restore. Is there any way to customize the name during or after Disk Utility restore? I tried making a new DVD image on disk first and renaming it, but when I restore it to my recovery partition it has the original name. EDIT: After booting to the wrong partition, and getting the "..can't be installed" message, I can open the Startup Disk menu and see the other partitions - and as I select each one, the info at the bottom indicates which OS revision is on that partition. So I know the info is in there! Just want it at the boot screen if possible.

• Iptables and system-config-firewall

  I had a set of netfilter rules set with iptables, but someone else told me to use system-config-firewall to add a rule for sharing files with Windows. (Samba) This rewrote the iptables rules file and I lost my own custom rules. I have a backup copy, but am having trouble restoring them. Edit: The server is Centos, I already tried to restore the rules with iptables-restore < /root/working.iptables.rules but for some reason the rules don't change. What are you trying to do? Trying to restore the iptable rules that I have in a backup file. What have you tried in order to make it happen? I've tried to modify the iptables file with vim, since the command iptables-restore was no help. What results did you expect? To get the old rules back. What actually happened? Nothing, when I run the command or edit the file by hand the file doesn't change at all. Maybe something else it's overwriting.

• Multiple asynchronous method calls to method while in a loop

  I have spent a whole day trying various ways using 'AddOnPreRenderCompleteAsync' and 'RegisterAsyncTask' but no success so far. I succeeded making the call to the DB asynchronous using 'BeginExecuteReader' and 'EndExecuteReader' but that is missing the point. The asynch handling should not be the call to the DB which in my case is fast, it should be afterwards, during the 'while' loop, while calling an external web-service. I think the simplified pseudo code will explain best: (Note: the connection string is using 'MultipleActiveResultSets') "Select ID, UserName from MyTable" 'Open connection to DB ExecuteReader(); if (DR.HasRows) {     while (DR.Read())     {         'Call external web-service         'and get current Temperature of each UserName - DR["UserName"].ToString()         'Update my local DB         Update MyTable set Temperature = ValueFromWebService where UserName =                                       DR["UserName"]         CmdUpdate.ExecuteNonQuery();     }     'Close connection etc } Accessing the DB is fast. Getting the returned result from the external web-service is slow and that at least should be handled Asynchnously. If each call to the web service takes just 1 second, assuming I have only 100 users it will take minimum 100 seconds for the DB update to complete, which obviously is not an option. There eventually should be thousands of users (currently only 2). Currently everything works, just very synchnously :) Thoughts to myself: Maybe my way of approaching this is wrong?   I need to set the ConnectionString for my DataContext's based on an AppSetting. I am trying to do this by creating a Partial Class for each DataContext. The below is what I have so far and I am wondering if I am overlooking something? Specifically, am I dealing with my DataContext's correctly(disposing, staleness, etc)? Doing it this way will I have issues with Updates and Inserts? Is the file BLLAspnetdb.cs useful or neccessary in the least or should all of that be in the generated partial class AspnetdbDataContext file?   Hello all the general idea is to create a galaxy-like map. I run into problems when I try to display a generated image. • ASP.NET Membership C# - How to compare existing password/hash

  I have been on this problem for a while. I need to compare a paasword that the user enters to a password that is in the membership DB. The password is hashed and has a salt. Because of the lack of documentation I do not know if the salt is append to the password and then hashed how how it is created. I am unable to get this to match. The hash returned from the function never matches the hash in the DB and I know for fact it is the same password. Microsoft seems to hash the password in a different way then I am. I hope someone has some insights please.   I've ran through several examples over the web, and found that every single time I need something from the DB, I should write the following code: try { // Step 1: Load the JDBC driver. I've quickly looked through NetBeans's Project menu, but didn't find any clue on how to configurate a persistent connection to a selected DB. If it's important, i'm writing a purely desktop app, i.e. using Java EE. Also, it's worth mentioning that I'm a kinda beginner in Java.

  Hi, I am currently building a dynamic url tab system that user can say what urls they want to be displayed on a tabpage control. In the database i have the following columns. userID, int URLName var Enabled bit I am pulling the data back ok but what i am trying do is populate a checkbox list with the urlname and its status on a user options page so they can say what tabs they want displayed. I have wrote the following methods to get the urls and create the checkboxes however i keep getting the following error. ex = {"InvalidArgument=Value of '1' is not valid for 'index'.\r\nParameter name: index"} It reads the first row ok but when it hits the 2nd row that is being returned i get that error. Has anyone got any ideas?   Hi All, MSTest has a [ClassCleanup()] attribute, which needs to be static as far as I can tell. I like to run through after my unit tests have run,and clean up my database. This all works great, however when I go to our build server and use our Nant build script, it seems like the unit tests are run with NUnit. NUnit doesn't seem to like the cleanup method to be static. It therefore ignores my tests in that class. What can I do to remedy this? I prefer to not use [TestCleanUp()] as that is run after each test. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know [TestCleanup()] aids in decoupling, but I really prefer the [ClassCleanup()] in this situation.
