• VSS error 12293 after system disk clone (Win2003)

  Hi! After cloning a windows 2003 installation from a single drive onto two mirrored drives using Acronis Disk Director, VSS no longer works, filing events 12293 and 7001 when trying to use backup tools, and additionally giving error 0x8004230f when accessing the Shadow copy tab of disk properties. I've google-researched this quite throughly, and found a suggested fix[1]: replacing the MBR signature of the disk. This would cause windows to invalidate old shadow copy information, which supposedly would make it all work again. However, I am a bit nervous over this... Is there a possiblity of messing this up somehow, because of the mbr originating from a single disk install, and now residing on a raid mirror? Has anyone here had this problem and solved it?   There is a Xen vs. KVM in performance question on ServerFault. What will be the performance difference if the choice is between Xen and OpenVZ? How is it best to measure? Some may say "you're comparing apples and oranges" but I have to choose one of the two and it needs to be wise choice. Performance is most important to us. We may switching to Xen from OpenVZ because Xen is more ubiquitous but only if performance difference is not significant. In January 2011 I'm thinking of doing a head to head performance comparison - here is my project proposal to our Bioinformatics facility director.

• Using group policy preferences to push a file to C:\Windows on a restricted user.

  We have a really old Video learning program that we need to run from the network for our students. However it uses Director Player 6.0 and the students get the error: "Unable to copy the driver file C:\Windows\xobglu16.dll to your Windows directory. Your disk may be full" Now the solution I've read is to copy the files manually to each machine and mark them read-only. I'm trying to do this via GPP, but the Event log is showing an Access is denied error. I believe it is because the student accounts do not have permission to c:\windows. Any ideas on a work around without using a script?

• Automatically wake up notebooks not on the ethernet

  I am looking for an automated backup system and I like bacula. I have 3 Notebooks and a Desktop computer that need regular backup. Now I don't want to let them run all night just to do the backuping, so I was thinking I could use wake-on-lan to have bacula wake up the machines, then do the backups, and shut them down afterswards. While this may work with devices on the ethernet, it won't work with the Notebooks on the wifi. So is it possible to have the Notebooks schedules to automatically wake up from suspend or shutdown ? Or is it possible to interject a shutdown command if it is after a certain hour and call the bacula director to start the backup now? I'm new to controlling the linux system using scripts, so any hints on how and where to start are greatly appreciated. Thanks alot for your help, input and ideas.

  Hello all, i need to provide a list of workspace requirements to the IT director for my network operations team. So far I got Secure workspace - so nothing gets stolen and people cant come up to us asking for support (they need a ticket from the helpdesk) Quite area - so that we can work and not be disturbed by the loud project managers who play soccer in the office sometimes. A large table or desk where we can setup and or config systems and servers if needed. What else do we need? Thanks in advance.

  A few users testing our Citrix XenApp service found that several (seemingly random) previously sent emails were sent out immediately after they logged into Outlook via Citrix for the first time. The problem hasn't occurred for them since. After one user had this happen, and we scratched our heads about it thinking it was a fluke, our IT director had this same issue. I guess I'd rule out any PEBKAC issues. I really don't know where to begin troubleshooting this problem. If you have any ideas what could have caused this, I'd appreciate you sharing them, as strange or far-fetched as they may seem :)

  Hi, I'm looking for an MKV meta tag editor, I'm using PLEX Media Server and PLEX Media Center on my iMac to see movies. PLEX is great because it automatically find and name all my movie library with year, director, gender, original title, description, movie poter art, etc. Unfortunately, it saves all the data only on a app DB file without edit any tag on the MKV files. A 20% of the movies needs to be fixed or PLEX needs help to find exactly the movie name, so if I need to move all my library elsewere, I need to do all the tagging work again. • ldirectord refusing connection when nginx redirects from http to https

  I am running ldirector as a load balancer to an nginx front end server. If I setup a redirect from http to https and connect directly to the nginx server, all is well. Connecting via ldirector causes my connection to be refused. I can connect normally via http or https through ldirector when I don't have the redirect in place. To add to my confusion, if my application issues a redirect from http to https, it works. I am testing this via curl on the command line. (curl: (7) couldn't connect to host vs a response) I am using the standard ldirectord config (http://www.ultramonkey.org/3/topologies/config/lb/non-fwmark/linux-director/ldirectord.cf) the http and https parts. My nginx config for the redirect is simply: location / { rewrite ^(.*) https://$host$1 permanent; }

• harddrive problem (usb external)

  Hey guys I am using a Maxtor One Touch 3 given to my by my uncle. It is connected through USB2.0 When I plug it in, XP installs it and says "the device is ready to use". But it dosnt show up on my computer. It dosn't even show up in disk mangement. I then install Acronis Disk Director (which detects it) but marks it as offline. if i try to change it to online, nothing happens. (actually the lights on the HD blink - meaning communication and goes back into offline mode). The lights on the HD return to a solid which mean "working properly". • Suggestion for live video stream aggregation/switching/forwarding/management software?

  I'm looking for a software or system that can receive video streams from a number of cameras via a network (RTMP or similar protocol), present a visual overview of all video streams and allow me to forward/send a selected stream to another service (e.g. to a Flash Media Server, or anywhere via RTMP). Basically the digital internet equivalent of a TV studio control panel, which allows a director to put together a live show. Is there any such software at an affordable price? A GUI-less server which can be scripted to switch streams would be good too. I'm not even quite sure what kind of product category this falls into or what search terms to plug into Google. Most results I have come up with have little more than an executive summary description which doesn't tell me anything. Any suggestion welcome.

• Tell the linux kernel to put a file in the disk cache?

  Is there any command to for a file to be read in and loaded into the linux disk cache? This is on an up-to-date debian system. I know in the general case, it's better to let the linux kernel figure this out. But I have an edge case. I have a laptop that has an NFS director mounted, and i want to play a long video file, but I don't want to have a network problem interrupt the playnig. I know that (largeish) file will be read in it's entirety later on. I know that nothing else (really) will be running while playing this video. There is enough free memory to store this file. (I know I could just copy the file into a new tmpfs filesystem, but I'm curious if there's an even shorter way to do it)

  I have 2 PCs on my desk, each one with its own screen, mouse and keyboard. And it's a pain moving from one PC to the other (even though they are one foot away from each other). So, it's time to change to different approach: KVM switches. What would you recommend for a setup like mine? I dont need to change monitors since they are both in front of me. I just need a way to change mouse and keyboard. I use Windows on both PCs and money is not an issue if it worth it. What would be the best option for a seamless integration of the two PCs? Edit: What about other software similar to Synergy, like Input Director? What's more convenient in your experience?

• Interconnection between 2 computers in different networks.

  Hi, What I want is to connect 2 computers (work and personal) primary for using a software KVM (Input Director or Synergy). Transferring files between them would be a plus. The main issue is that the work computer is in a secured enterprise network, and my personal computer is using a 3G+ modem for Internet access. On the work computer I do not have Internet access (only local network). I want to somehow connect them without to mess up either networks. I want my personal computer to not be seen in the work network. Is it possible? Suggestions: - use a simple UTP cable to connect the 2 computers with each other. Can they each be in both 2 networks without issues? - use some kind of usb cable, if exists

User input comes through Richtexteditor so it is html I save the html text from Richtexteditor to textArea's htmltext property. everything seems to be fine! till I try to embed fonts!! (I need to embed fonts because I apply a fade effect to the TextArea.) With embedded fonts the text simply disappears! could you help me out here please! i am really desperate!   My team doing a project related to network using Asp.net MVC(c#). I need to validate mac address & ipaddress in client side(using javascript) & server side(using c#). I didn't get a good solution for validating mac address & ip addresss. I searched google for finding a good user interface for validating mac address by giving colon after two number eg: "XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX" by using Masked Input.Please give reference/guidance for implementing this. Any jquery plugin for implementing Masked Input.
