What are solutions and tradeoffs to maintain search result consistency in a web application

Consider a web application with a custom search function that must display the results in a paged manner (twenty per page with up to hundreds of thousands of total results) and the ability to drill down to individual results that maintain next/previous links to navigate through the results. Re-executing the search on each page request to get the appropriate results for that page of data can be too expensive (up to 15s per search). Also, since the underlying data can change frequently (e.g. addition of new results), re-executing could cause the next/previous functionality to result in inconsistent behavior (e.g. the same results reappearing on a later page after having been viewed on an earlier page). What options exist to ensure the search results can be viewed across multiple pages in a consistent manner, and what tradeoffs does each option have in terms of network, CPU, memory, and storage requirements? EDIT: I thought caching the query search results was an obvious necessity. The question is really asking about where to cache the result set and what tradeoffs might exist to each. For example, storing the ids of the entities in the result set on the client, or storing the IDs of the entities themselves in the users session on the web server, or in a temporary table in the database. I'm not looking specifically for a single solution as different scenarios may result in different approaches (and such a question would be more suited for stackoverflow.com rather than here), but more of a design comparison between the possible approaches.

Game Asset Management

I am making my first small mobile game in C# XNA. Lets say I have 3 screens, the main menu, options and game screen. A single game session usually lasts for 1 min, so the user will alternate frequently between the main menu and game screen. Therefore, once I load the textures for either screen, I want to keep them in memory to avoid frequent reloading. Both screens share some assets like their background textures, but differ in others. The first solution I came up with is making 2 texture factory classes, MainScreenAssetFactory and GameScreenAssetFactory, each with their own content manager, and ill store them in a globally accessible point so that they persist after either screen is destroyed. There is also a OptionsScreenAssetFactory, but that I dont want to cache it since the options screen is rarely visited. A typical Factory would look something like this public class MainScreenAssetFactory { private readonly ContentManager contentManager; public MainScreenAssetFactory(IServiceProvider serviceProvider, string rootDirectory) { contentManager = new ContentManager(serviceProvider) { RootDirectory = rootDirectory }; } public Texture2D ListElementBackground { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("UserTab"); } } public Texture2D ListElementBulletPoint { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("TabIcon"); } } public Texture2D LoggedOutUser { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("LoggedOutUser"); } } } Since both Main, Options and Game Screen share some common resources, instead of loading them more than once, I created another class CommonAssetTexFactory which holds the common stuff and stays in-memory during the app lifetime. For example, this class gets passed to the options screen when it is created. However, given my small game with its few assets, I am already finding this solution cumbersome and inflexible. Changing anything would require looking to see if its already in the common factory, and if not, modifying existing factories and so on. And this is just considering textures currently, i didnt add sound files yet. I cant imagine bigger games with thousands of resources using this approach. A better idea must exist. Would someone please enlighten me?

Ubuntu live cd : black screen and blinking cursor

I try to install ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. I can get to the purple screen on the live cd but then, if I choose "Installing Ubuntu", I have a black screen with a cursor blinking (and nothing else happens). My PC : acer aspire M3920, CPU i5-2300, 8 Gb RAM, NVIDIA gt 405. What I already tried : I tried with 12.04 and 13.04 daily build I tried with a live usb and with a live dvd I tried the following boot options : nomodset, acpi=off I googled a lot and it seems that it could be a graphic card problem. Do you know any other boot options that I could try ? UPDATE This is not a duplicate : I've tried all the common boot options (nomodeset, noacpi...) and it doesn't change anything. With the option "no splash" (instead of "quiet splash"), I can see what happens before the forever-blinking cursor : [sdg] no caching mode present [sdg] assuming drive cache : write trough ata8.00: excetion Emask 0x52 ... frozen ata8 : SError : { RecovData RecovComm UnrecovData...} ata8.00 : failed command : IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE ... ata8.00 : status : { DRDY } ata8 : hard resetting link Does somebody know what it means ? N.B. astonishingly, Puppy Linux boots fine (but Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu do not) Solution In fact, it was not a graphic card problem. I had to disconnect the dvd drive and connect it to another free sata connector (I don't really understand why Ubuntu had trouble with this connector and Windows 7 not). After that, everything worked fine.

SSI: Failed String Comparison with CGI Environment Variable [migrated]

I am currently working on developing a personal website. It's not my first time doing this, but this is my first major foray into implementing SSI. I've run myself into a wall, however, with an if-else directive that uses one of the CGI environment variables as part of its comparison. Even after some limited attempts at debugging, all of the output and documentation that I have means that the comparisons being made should fail outright. This is not the case, and the wrong evaluation is being made by the if-else directive. WIFI/LAN not working after Installing Ubuntu 13.10

I can't connect to my WIFI after installing Ubuntu 13.10. I tried re-installing it three times (thinking that I did something wrong during the installation) but I still can't connect to my WIFI. It just gives me the message that I'm offline and that I can't connect to my WIFI. I also tried connecting to the internet using LAN cable but with the same results. I tried google but it seems that there's no solution to this yet.... Anybody knows how to solve this? Thanks! Software Center does not load

I'm having problems with opening my Software center and it just shuts off after loading a few seconds. I can't even get it to the main page of the Software Center. I did try to follow these commands but of no avail: sudo apt-get purge software-center sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install software-center Instead, I get an error after entering the first command: eim@eim-VAIO:~$ sudo apt-get purge software-cente Reading package lists... How to build a good service layer in ASP.NET?

I have looked through some questions, technologies for building a good service layer but I have some questions regarding this that I need help with. First some information of what I have for requirements. We currently have a number of web applications that talk to each other in a spiderweb looking way (all talking to each other in a confusing way via webservices and database data). We want to change this so that all applications go through a service layer where we can work more with cache and encapsulate common functionality and more. We want this layer to also have a Web API so that 3rd party clients can consume information from the service. The problem I see is that if we build the service layer with say MVC4 Web API don't we need to communicate between the application using the webAPI meaning we have to construct URLs and consume JSON/Xml. That does not sound too effective. I assume a better method would be working with entities and WCF to communicate between the application but then we might loose the Web API magic? So the question is if there is a way to consume a service layer as both a Web API (JSON/XML) and as a more backend service layer with entities. If we are forced to use 2 different service layers we might have to duplicate some functionality and other bad things. Hope the question is clear enough and please ask if you need any more information.

Storing images in file system and returning URLs or virtually resizing and returning byte arrays?

I need to create a REST web service to manage user submitted images and displaying them all in a website. There are multiple websites that are going to use this service to manage and display images. The requirements are to have 5 pre-defined image sizes available. The 2 options I see are the following: The web service will create the 5 images, store them in the file system and and store the URL's in the database when the user submits the image. When the image is requested, the web service will return an array of URLs. I see this option to be a little hard on the hard drive. The estimates are 10,000 users per site, and lets say, 100 sites. The heavy processing will be done when the user submits the image and each image is going to be pulled from the File System. The web service will store just the image that the user submits in the file system and it's URL in the database. When the user request images, the web service will get the info from the DB, load the image on memory, create its 5 instances and return an object with 5 image arrays (I will probably cache the arrays). This option is harder on the processor and memory. The heavy processing will be done when the images get requested. A plus I see for option 2 is that it will give me the option to rewrite the URL of the image and make them site dependent (prettier) than having a image repository for all websites. But this is not a big deal. What do you think of these options? Do you have any other suggestions?

Dell Inspiron7520 and ubntu 12.04 issues

I have a DELL Inspiron 7520 in the highest configuration: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM processor (6M Cache, up to 3.1 GHz) 15.6" Full High Definition (1080p) LED Display 8GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz 1TB 5400RPM SATA HDD + 32GB mSATA SSD w/Intel Smart Response Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD) AMD Radeon™ HD 7730M 2GB 6.09 lbs and I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 few days ago and I'm facing some issues: 1) sometimes the whole ntb freezes and I have to hold power button for 5 secs to shut it down. I think it is something with VGA and connected external monitor. I have read somewhere that it is already a reported bug, but what I am not sure about that it is doing sporadically. Sometimes it freezes right after I log in, sometime I ran few hours and then it freezes. I am using those proprietary drivers but I wasn't been able to install those with updates. 2) the next issue is the fan is quite noisy even when the ntb is almost Idle. (max 10% CPU usage). Can you recommend me some software which could do this power management to lower the noise? I have tried CPU frequency scaling indicator, but it seems that it has not any effects. 3) and issue no. 3: when I want to log out, restart or shutdown using the menu in upper right corner the upper and left trays disappear, but programs are still running and they won't close to complete log out or shutting down the OS. When I use the CLI command, it works fine. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Anytime I try to install python packages using the command: sudo apt-get install python-package I get the following output: Reading package lists... As I said, my machine normally dynamically allocates additional memory from the host machine, so I don't see why there would be memory restrictions at all...

How do I get my Intel HD graphics to work alongside my HD7850, as my second(HDMI out) monitor?

Further info: Motherboard: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Pro3/ Processor: http://ark.intel.com/products/65520/Intel-Core-i5-3570K-Processor-%286M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz%29 So currently my main screen is running on my HD7850. Got drivers from the amd website. I have looked through dozens of questions here. I'm about to try booting Ubuntu from a stick and seeing if the xorg-edgers drivers might help. When booting, all action goes down on the very screen I'm trying to get to work.*EDIT never mind this. Seems to be special boot magic. As the screen only displays whiteline errors once the gui of ubuntu has kicked in and everything graphic is happening through my graphics card again. Connected through HDMI(motherboard)-DVI. So unless having multiple displays is a huge deal the solution hopefully isn't that complicated. I just feel I'm missing something simple. If this really is complicated, I should probably just hook up the display to my graphics card. My CPU is usually the one chilling out though so I'd like to try to get that to work. Also just because I don't want to buy an extra cable and this set up makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Tell me what to try or look up, I'll be most appreciative. Thank you! **UPDATE The x-swat ppa installed some intel stuff. Booting with one monitor plugged into the motherboard gives nothing. Doing it with the pc already on gives the purple "Ubuntu" with 5 dots boot/shutdown screen.

Using the Coherence ConcurrentMap Interface (Locking API)

For many developers using Coherence, the first place they look for concurrency control is the com.tangosol.util.ConcurrentMap interface (part of the NamedCache interface). The ConcurrentMap interface includes methods for explicitly locking data. Despite the obvious appeal of a lock-based API, these methods should generally be avoided for a variety of reasons: They are very "chatty" in that they can't be bundled with other operations (such as get and put) and there are no collection-based versions of them. Locks do directly not impact mutating calls (including puts and entry processors), so all code must make explicit lock requests before modifying (or in some cases reading) cache entries. They require coordination of all code that may mutate the objects, including the need to lock at the same level of granularity (there is no built-in lock hierarchy and thus no concept of lock escalation). Even if all code is properly coordinated (or there's only one piece of code), failure during updates that may leave a collection of changes to a set of objects in a partially committed state. There is no concept of a read-only lock. In general, use of locking is highly discouraged for most applications. Instead, the use of entry processors provides a far more efficient approach, at the cost of some additional complexity.

Is this too much to ask for a game programming and developing enthusiast? Am I doing this wrong?

I have been a computer-fanatic for almost a decade now. I've always loved and wondered how computers work, even from the purest, lowest hardware level to the very smallest pixel on the screen, and all the software around that. That seems to be my problem though ... as I try to write code (I'm pretty fluent at C++) I always sit there enormous amounts of time in front of a text-editor wondering how every line, statement, datum, function, etc. will correspond to every Assembly and machine instruction performed to do absolutely everything necessary for the kernel to allocate memory to run my compiled program, and all of the other hardware being used as well. For example ... I would write cout << "Before memory changed" << endl; and run the debugger to get the Assembly for this, and then try and reverse disassemble the Assembly to machine code based on my ISA, and then research every .dll, library file, linked library, linking process, linker source code of the program, the make file, the kernel I'm using's steps of processing this compilation, the hardware's part aside from the processor (e.g. video card, sound card, chipset, cache latency, byte-sized registers, calling convention use, DDR3 RAM and disk drive, filesystem functioning and so many other things). Am I going about programming wrong? I mean I feel I should know everything that goes on underneath English syntax on a computer program. But the problem is that the more I research every little thing the less I actually accomplish at all. I can never finish anything because of this mentality, yet I feel compelled to know everything... what should I do?

Random greyed unresponsive screen on netbook

I love my Asus Eee PC 1000 Ubuntu 12.04 netbook, but I have a little problem. As I use it, the screen will randomly turn grey and become unresponsive. I can then only wait, until perhaps 10-60 secs. later, when I can interact again. Only the bar at the top of my screen retains its colour throughout. I thought it might be Firefox, as I have a lot of tabs open. I installed Chromium, used it instead, and the problem remained. A while back I upgraded from 1 to 2 Gb RAM. So, I thought recently, maybe I should increase the swap-space. I have 738Mb of 7.2Gb free on root; and 2Gb of 28Gb free on my home drive. I bought a 32 Gb SD Card and assigned 4Gb to swap space. cat /proc/swaps reports that the partition is being used. Alas the problem remains. Does anyone know what's wrong with my machine? The SD Card has changed my machine somewhat, but the greying still happens. I ran free -m shortly after another episode, and received: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2004 1731 272 0 370 769 -/+ buffers/cache: 591 1412 Swap: 4073 0 4073 Update: Using 'top', I can see that compiz uses about 43% of the CPU (#1 position) when the greying occurs. After the greying, compiz drops back down to its usual 8% of CPU.

Hi, I've created a site basic definition that uses different master and default pages. Everything works quite well except for whenever I create a new site based on the definition I receive the following error when browsing to the new site: [COMException (0x80004005): Cannot complete this action. ie7 innerhtml strange display problem

Hello, I am having a strange problem with ie7 (ie8 in compatibility mode). I have div containers where I am updating values using javascript innhtml to update the values. This works fine in Firefox and ie8. In ie7 the values do not update but if a click on the values and highlight them then they update, also if a change the height of the browser then on the next update the values get updated correctly. I have figured out that if I change the position property of the outer div container from relative to static then the updates work correctly. The page can be viewed here http://islendingasogur.net/test/webmap_html_test.html In internet explorer 8 with compatibility turned on you can see that the timestamp in the gray box only gets updated one time, after that you see no changes. The timestamp in the lower right corner gets updated every 10 seconds. But if you highlight the text in the gray box then the updated timestamp values appears! Android app crashes on emulator - logCat shows no errors

I have just added the SherlockActionBar library to my android project. After some small changes (FragmentActivity - SherlockFragmentActivity, getActionBar() - getSupportActionBar(), imports) it all compiled nicely. After I run the app, however, the debugger stops, as though it had encountered an exception. However, there are no errors shown in the LogCat output. I just can't wrap my head around what's going on. Unable to set up SSL support for Apache 2 on Debian

I am trying to set up ssl support for Apache 2 on Debian. Versions are: Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 apache2 2.2.16-6+squeeze1 I followed a lot of how-tos for days but I couldn't make it work. Where / how does Apache generate the HTML code used in the default directory listing?

I am looking to modify the HTML that apache generates for its default directory listing. I already know how to create a HEADER.html file that gets included for every directory listing. I have come across a Windows XP machine that is sending unwanted p2p traffic. I have done a 'netstat -b' command and explorer.exe is sending out the traffic. When I kill this process the traffic stops and obviously Windows Explorer dies. Here is the header of the stream from the Wireshark dump (x.x.x.x) is the machines IP. I have looked in Windows firewall and it shouldn't be letting this traffic through. I have had a look into the messages explorer.exe is sending in Spy++ and the only related ones I can see are socket connections etc... My question is what can I do to look into this deeper? What does malware achieve by sending p2p traffic? I know to fix the problem the easiest way is to reinstall Windows but I want to get to the bottom of it first, just out of interest. Edit: Had a look at Deoendency Walker and Process Explorer. Both great tools. "I tried to make this easy to read through" I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for Magento and installed these commands onto the system: sudo apt-get install apache2 sudo apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 sudo apt-get install php5-mysql sudo apt-get install php5-curl php5-mcrypt php5-gd php5-common sudo apt-get install php5-gd I used Windows Server 2008 R2 August 2012 for Mysql Server For a reference, I used http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/manage/windows/common-tasks/install-mysql/ When the server was setup, I added an empty disk to it Then, I added endpoints 3306 Next I accessed the server remotely After that, I formatted the empty disk and was inserted as F: Next I downloaded Mysql from http://*.mysql.com version Windows (x86, 64-bit), MSI Installer 5.5.28 In the installation process, I used these settings: Typical Setup - Clicked Next, install, next Chose Detailed Configuration - Clicked next Chose Dedicated MySQL Server Machine - Clicked Next Chose Transactional Database Only - Clicked Next Chose the "F:" Drive - Clicked Next Chose Online Transactional Processing (OLTP) - Clicked Next For Networking Options, I checkmarked 'Enable TCP/IP Networking" 'Add firewall exception for this port' 'Enable Strict Mode' - Clicked Next Chose Standard Character Set - Clicked Next For Windows Options, I checkedmarked 'Install as Window Service" 'Launch the MySQL Server automatically' 'Include Bin Directory in Windows PATH - Clicked Next For Security Options, I checkmarked 'Modify Security Settings' and set root password - Clicked Next Finally clicked Execute and Finish These are the Firewall Setting that I set I clicked inbound rules Properties Scope Allow IP Address and used the internal Address for Magento Server Clicked Apply and exited Next, I opened up MySQL 5.x Command Line Client Entered Root Password Then entered these commands mysql create database magento; mysql Create user magentouser identified by 'password'; mysql Grant select, insert, create, alter, update, delete, lock tables on magento.* to magentouser mysql exit Finally, I opened up the Magento Downloader Magento validation has approved all PHP version is right. Your version is 5.3.10-1ubuntu3.4. PHP Extension curl is loaded PHP Extension dom is loaded PHP Extension gd is loaded PHP Extension hash is loaded PHP Extension iconv is loaded PHP Extension mcrypt is loaded PHP Extension pcre is loaded PHP Extension pdo is loaded PHP Extension pdo_mysql is loaded PHP Extension simplexml is loaded These are all installed on Magento Server For the Database Connection, I used: The Database server only has MySQL 5.5 Server installed on it Host - Internal IP address User Name - The User I created when setting up database Password - The Password I created when setting up database For the password, I did some research and found out that Magento only accepts alphanumeric, so I went and set it up again and used only alphanumeric for the User password Now, I am still getting Accessed denied for database Connection. Also, I have tryed to setup mysql on independant Linux Server but kept getting errors. When, I found the solution. Wouldn't work, so I decided to try Windows. These is the questions, I have been asking and researching to debug this issue Is it because I am using Linux for magento and Windows for Database. I have had no luck in finding a reason why this wouldn't work There must be something, I am missing I also researched the difference between linux sql databases and windows sql databases but have not come to conclusion, if installing Mysql on windows would make a difference in syntax and coding. I have spent a lot of time looking into this and need some help with direction on how to complete my project. Any type of help would be appreciated.
