• Is this a bad time to be majoring in computer science?

- by ATMathew
There has been a lot of media attention paid in recent months and years to the increase in CS majors and the possibility of a second tech bubble. Some news reports have suggested that as more people enter CS, the market could be flooded with CS professionals and jobs could be increasingly difficult to find. Is this a bad time to be majoring in computer science? Edit: I'm a non-trad student who allready has a Bachelor's degree in economics and will be pursuing a CS degree starting this upcoming summer semester at the Univ of Kansas. I've been programming for about two/three years and just need a more formal education to fill the holes in my head. I have an interest in CS, it's just that I am worries about the prospects for the future.

• SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

- by Greg Low
Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. Unfortunately, they then had to be withdrawn. The good news is that they’re back and you can get the latest version from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42313

• How to Build a Website

I am an affiliate marketer. So when I first build a website, I will build it around a topic and not around the product. I'll take the primary keyword and make that my domain name. I do this so that my website will rank well in the search engines. Then I go about selecting categories from the next keyword phrases down.

• Unleash the Power of JavaFX

- by Angela Caicedo
It seems that it was just yesterday that we were getting ready for JavaOne 2012. Now it's over, but it's definitely a great time to go back and watch the sessions you missed, and learn some of the latest news about Java. For this JavaOne, I presented two sessions and one HOL, all of them related to JavaFX: JavaFX Extreme GUI Makeover Building JavaFX Interfaces with the Real World Unleash the power of JavaFX If you couldn't join us for these sessions, just follow the links and you can watch the videos on demand. For the HOL I've created a repository at GitHub, as many of the attendees wanted to keep the material. In this repository you can find the lab document, the NetBeans projects for each exercise and it's appropriate solution. Hope you enjoy! I created and presented a HOL called: Unleash the power of JavaFX. In this blog entry I would like to provide you

• Twitter Customer Sentiment Analysis

- by Liam McLennan
The breakable toy that I am currently working on is a twitter customer sentiment analyser. It scrapes twitter for tweets relating to a particular organisation, applies a machine learning algorithm to determine if the content of tweet is positive or negative, and generates reports of the sentiment data over time, correlated to dates, events and news feeds. I’m having lots of fun building this, but I would also like to learn if there is a market for quantified sentiment data. So that I can start to show people what I have in mind I have created a mockup of the simplest and most important report. It shows customer sentiment over time, with important events highlighted. As the user moves their mouse to the right (forward in time) the source data area scrolls up to display the tweets from that time. The tweets are colour coded based on sentiment rating. After I started working on this project I discovered that a team of students have already built something similar. It is a lot of fun to enter your employers name and see what it says.

• GPL licensed software installed on commercial hardware

- by Alexander Reshytko
Do vendors need to provide sources, at the customer's request, for GPL licensed software installed on the hardware they sell? For example, a vendor sells an IPTV box and pre-installs some proprietary software product which is linked with some GPLed library. As a consequence, the software becomes GPLed itself. Does the vendor need to provide the source code for it? The vendor doesn't sell that software, he sells hardware.

• Q&A: Where does high performance computing fit with Windows Azure?

- by Eric Nelson
Answer I have been asked a couple of times this year about taking compute intensive operations to Windows Azure and/or High Performance Computing on Windows Azure. It is an interesting (if slightly niche) area. The good news is we have a great paper from David Chappell on HPC Server and Windows Azure integration. As a taster: A SOA application running entirely on Windows Azure runs its WCF services in Azure Worker nodes. • hPalm and a web-centric strategy

The acquisition battle has come and gone, and it’s HP that’s become Palm’s new owner. In general this news has been greeted withgladcries, despite (or maybe because) it was so unexpected. In general everybody assumes that the marriage of Palm software and HP hardware will be a good one, and that HP will also release a webOS-based tablet device. However, there’s an interesting dissenting opinion on VisionMobile (a blog I highly recommend, by the way). Guest author Michael Valukenko sees few synergies...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.
