• What are block expressions actually good for?

  I just solved the first problem from Project Euler in JavaFX for the fun of it and wondered what block expressions are actually good for? Why are they superior to functions? Is it the because of the narrowed scope? Less to write? Performance? Here's the Euler example. • using curl command to download file in parts from different interfaces and to run the commands simultaneously from a script

• How do I download a corrupted package again?

  Ubuntu 12.04 can't install Firefox 13 update, because the package is corrupted. While attempting to install, returns this error (I translated it from my language to English). /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb W: Waited for dpkg --assert-multi-arch but was not there - dpkgGo (10: There are no "child" processes). I can tell that the package at /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_13.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1_i386.deb is corrupted, but even as admin, I can't delete it in order to be downloaded again. • Why are downloads from Canonical Partners repository so slow?

  If I need Sun Java, Adobe Flash Plugin or anything else that comes from Canonical Partners the package downloads are painfully slow even small sized packages like the Flash plugin, to speed things up I have to go here: http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/pool/partner/ to find what I want, download the packages with a download manager (which is usually about 20 times faster than the package manager) and then place them in my /var/cache/apt/archives folder I run the package manager afterwards, as long as the right versions of the packages I ask to install are detected in the /var/cache/apt/archives folder they will be installed immediately. I would like to stop doing this, so I am wondering if anyone else has this problem, what could be the cause and if there is a fix. I am located in the Western Caribbean region. I think it would be helpful to note that all other packages coming from the repository I have selected with synaptic download at acceptable speeds.

• Why Firefox caching work will reset in version 3 but version 16 don't?

  I am developing a web application and have the app deployed into Tomcat server. Tested on IE and Firefox and are working fine. Meaning when I close the browser and reopen the app, the data will be reset. When deploy to Websphere, the data is reset only in IE but Firefox don't. Meaning Firefox will cache the old data. I did try to clear the cache in FF but still failed. I did a test in FF3 and FF16, FF3 will reset the value but FF16 doesn't, I am just so curious why this could happened? Now I don't know whether this is my code problem or is actually the FF caching problem. Any clue on this?

• mplayer does not disable screensaver

  so i have upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 and i installed smplayer from the repositories. The thing is when i play a movie (even in full screen) the screen saver comes up. • access to site owner not working

  I made a website it works for everyone except for the site owner, who cannot access the site. He gets a server could not be found error. I went to his house and the issue occurs for all of his devices (PC, laptop, iPhone using WiFi) when I turn WiFi off the iPhone it works. So I thought it was a problem on his router so I reset is router to default factory settings but it still does not work, I have flushed his DNS cache and his browser cache. But nothing seems to help. He cannot even PING the server using the domain name. However when he uses the IP address he can see the site fine. I looked in cpanel for an blocked IP addresses but cannot see anything. What could be stopping just him from accessing the site via domainname and not the IP address? Site details are: PHP, osCommerce it is hosted by site5 on my reseller account.

• is it possible that a greasemonkey script can work on one computer but not on another?

  I'm creating a Ruby game using the Gosu framework. All good. Sometimes, when I run the game, it has some kind of slow startup, and probably it will be rather slow during the whole game. So I close it and... open it again. It is very likely that it will startup quickly and the whole game will run smoothly and fast. Why is that? What is this phenomenon? Is it faster because of some cache stored or whatever since the first run? (But why would cache be stored? If the app dies, I would expect no references at all etc...) Ruby, Windows 7.

• Site returning 404 header to google, not sure why

  A Drupal site that works fine for regular users returns a 404 not found error when I try to use the W3C validator on it; it is also not being indexed by google at all (which is the main issue but I suspect there is a connection). It is a https:// site with .htaccess rule to redirect any http:// request to the https://. I had had it running in google webmaster tools and thought it was fine, but it turns out I had not added the https domain. • How do I dynamically import a module in App Engine?

  I'm trying to dynamically load a class from a specific module (called 'commands') and the code runs totally cool on my local setup running from a local Django server. This bombs out though when I deploy to Google App Engine. I've tried adding the commands module's parent module to the import as well with no avail (on either setup in that case). Here's the code: mod = __import__('commands.%s' % command, globals(), locals(), [command]) return getattr(mod, command) App Engine just throws an ImportError whenever it hits this. And the clarify, it doesn't bomb out on the commands module. If I have a command like 'commands.cat' it can't find 'cat'.

  Hi I am trying to do some maths with my VBA excel (prime factorization) and I am hitting the limit of the long data type (runtime error 6 Overflow). Is there any way to get around this and still stay within VBA? (I am aware that the obvious one would be to use another more appropriate programming language) Thanks for help in advance! Thank you, it works in so far that I am able to get the big numbers into the variables now. However when I try to apply the MOD function (bignumber MOD 2 for example) it still fails with error message runtime error 6 Overflow.

• Database Context and Singleton injection with IoC

  All of the below relates to a ASP.NET c# app. I have a Singleton Settings MemoryCache that reads values from database on first access and caches these, then invalidates them using SQL Service Broker message and re-reads as required. For the purposes of standard controllers, i create my Db Context in a request scope. However, this obviously means that i can't use the same context in the Settings Cache class, since that is a singleton and we have a scope collision. At the moment, i ended up with two db contexts - the Controllers get it via IoC container, whereas a Singleton just creates it's own. However, i am not satisfied with this approach (mostly due to the way i feel about two contexts, the cache doesn't set anything on the db hence concurrency is not an issue as much). What is a better way to do it?

• "domain crashed" when creating new Xen instance

  I have downloaded a Xen virtual machine image from the appscale project, and I am trying to start it up. Everything is lowercase, so I don't think that it's that issue. If I switch to MySQL, the same code same project (I only change driver,URL, authentication), it works. In Eclipse Datasource Explorer, I can ping the DB and it succeeds. Weird thing is that I can't see the tables from there either. It expands the public schema but it doesn't expand the tables. Could it be some permission issue? Thanks!

• Can't get MySQL to install

  I'd like to think I know what I'm doing in a Unix shell but maybe not. I made a mistake in a configuration file for MySQL, so I decided to just uninstall it and then reinstall it, so I did: sudo apt-get --purge remove mysql-server mysql-server-5.0 mysql-client The files were deleted, so I then tried to install it, but it didn't ask me for a root password or anything else, so I uninstalled it using the above command again and then did sudo rm -rf /etc/mysql sudo rm /etc/init.d/mysql sudo rm -rf /var/lib/mysql* I then restarted the computer then installed it again: sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client It asked for a root password, and everything looked like it would work, until I saw this: $ sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client Reading package lists...
