• Huge Need for Mentoring

  I see a need for a product/network that provides meaningful mentoring. I personally am in need of a mentor. I have one currently but he moved out of state so I don't have daily contact anymore. I see many young people who are in need of mentors and I have mentored some of them. I also see many senior level people who are growing stale and need mentoring. My idea is for some type of service for connecting people needed mentoring with those willing to be mentors. A mentor can mentor a single individual or a group. I think people would be willing to pay a good mentor especially if they are recommended by peers.

• Why to let / not let developers test their own work

  I want to gather some arguments as to why letting a developer testing his/her own work as the last step before the product goes into production is a bad idea, because unfortunately, my place of work sometimes does this (the last time this came up, the argument boiled down to most people being too busy with other things and not having the time to get another person familiar with that part of the program - it's very specialised software). There are test plans in this case (though not always), but I am very much in favor of making a person who didn't make the changes that are tested actually doing the final testing. So I am asking if you could provide me with a good and solid list of arguments I can bring up the next time this is discussed. Or to provide counter-arguments, in case you think this is perfectly fine especially when there are formal test cases to test.

It's hard to sell a client on an agile project when our competitors do come up with waterfall-based fixed deadlines and fixed prices. We know their fixed numbers are bad, but the client doesn't know that. So, we end up looking bad to the client because we can't fix the price or a deadline but our competitors can. So, how can you get your sales force to successfully sell a project that uses agile development methods, or a product that is developed using such methods? All the information I found seems to focus on project management and developers.

• SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released.   My friend is a project manager for a software company. The most frustrating thing for him is that his engineers frequently leave their jobs. The company works hard to recruit new engineers, transfer projects, and keep a stable quality product. When people leave, it drives my friend crazy. These engineers are quite young and ambitious, and they want higher salaries and better positions. The big boss only thinks about it in financial terms, and his theory is that “three newbies are always better than one veteran” (which, as an experienced engineer, I know is wrong). My friend hates that theory. Any advice for him?

First, here's some background, we got some experienced developers and we also got new hires with almost zero programming practice. we'd like to perform fast and short iterations to release our product. we all team members locate at same site. The advantages of code review before commit I've learned, mentor new hires try to prevent errors, failures, bad designs in early developing cycle learn from others knowledge backup if someone quits But I also got some bad experience, like low efficiency, some changes may be reviewed over days hard to balance speed and quality, especially for newbies some guy felt distrust As to post-review, I just knew little about this, but the most thing I worried about is the risk of losing control, people never review. • File system layout for multiple build targets

  I am seeking some ideas for how to build and install software with some parameters. These including target OS, target platform CPU details, debugging variant, etc. Some parts of the install are shared, such as documentation and many platform independent files, others are not, such as 64 and 32 bit libraries when these are separated and not together in a multi-arch library. On big networked platforms one often has multiple computers sharing some large server space, so there is actually cause to have even Windows and Unix binaries on the same disk. My product has already fixed an install philosophy of $INSTALL_ROOT/genericname/version/ so that multiple versions can coexist. The question is: how to manage the layout of all the other stuff?

• Do wordpress websites get indexed quicker by SE than a regular website?

  I registered a couple of domains with the names of categories of products we sell. I then installed wordpress in one of those domains and played around with it for a bit, and left it alone for about a month. There was a link on my regular website to that secondary website and that website was also registered in google's webmaster tools, but that's that. I then searched on google last week for that product category, and to my surprise, that secondary website showed up in the 2nd or 3rd page on google. Now my question is: Do search engines index wordpress websites quicker? I had given up on using wordpress for that website, since it's so simple, but should i use it, would it give me better results? Thanks in advance for the help, if the question is not deleted.

• Can a plug-in access a database server?

  At my work place, we use an external client's web application monitor and respond to support tickets of our clients. the problem with that application is that it does not house a field to enter the actual effort (hours worked on a particular ticket) to be stored in the database. What is needed to write a plug-in for Internet Explorer that would get triggered on a button click on a certain webpage and save some data in an external database? That is, if the support personnel is closing the ticket after resolving it, is it possible to invoke that plugin that asks the personnel to enter the effort spent on that ticket and store it in an external database? We can't modify the web application as it is vendor supplied and not an in-house product.

While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD. • Should I have link rel=next & prev on URLs which have query variables?

  For example, I have link rel prev & next set up on these pages of products: site.com?page=2 site.com?page=3 (this is my preferred structure by the way and I'm trying to get all the ugly URLs which are littered with query variables deindexed as they are causing duplicate content). So the above URLs are fine but once a filter to narrow product results is selected, like "price", the URL shows like this: site.com?price[1000-1499]=on site.com?page=2&price[1000-1499]=on As of right now, I am having the link rel prev & next dynamically added to the header of these pages but since I am working on getting these query variable URLs pages deindexed, I am wondering if I should get rid of it on these pages? Any thoughts?

I have a laptop Toshiba Portege Z830 where Wifi've already worked under Windows 7. But after migration on Ubuntu 10.12. I'm not able get it work. • When should code favour optimization over readability and ease-of-use?

  I am in the process of designing a small library, where one of my design goals is that the API should be as close to the domain language as possible. While working on the design, I've noticed that there are some cases in the code where a more intuitive, readable attribute/method call requires some functionally unnecessary encapsulation. Since the final product will not necessarily require high performance, I am unconcerned about making the decision to favour ease-of-use in my current project over the most efficient implementation of the code in question. I know not to assume readability and ease-of-use are paramount in all expected use-cases, such as when performance is required. I would like to know if there are more general reasons that argue for a design preferring more efficient implementations—even if only marginally so?

  It is a bit ironic, yesterday I answered a question related to this topic that was marked to be good and today I'm the one who asks. These are my thoughts and a question: Also let's agree on the terms: QA is a set of activities that defines and implements processes during SW development. The common tool is the process audit. However, my colleague at work agrees with the opinion that reviews and inspections are also quality assurance tools, although most sources classify them as quality control. I would say both sides are partially right: during inspections, we evaluate a physical product (clearly QC) but we see it as a white box so we can check its compliance with set processes (QA). Do you think it is the reason of the dichotomy among the authors? I know it is more like an academic question but it deserves the answer :)

  I have Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop with Windows 7 installed on it.Also I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a separate drive.I want to install Adobe Master Collection CS6 on Ubuntu 12.10.I tried using wine but what wine does is,it just installs the software & doesn't allow me to use it.While I click on any Adobe product say Adobe Photoshop & hit enter to run it it pops out an error message. How should I tackle this?Is there any other software apart from virtual Machine Ware or Wine to install & successfully run Adobe Master Collection CS6 in Ubuntu 12.10?

  We have internal DNS servers where we've registered a FQDN that resolves internally to identityreg.domain.com. We also have an existing web page at https://iamserver.domain.com/product/default.asp?Workflow=process1. We need our users to be redirected to the existing web page URL whenever they type identityreg.domain.com. We're using IIS for the web server. I'm a newbie here so forgive any misuse of terms. How do I get the FQDN to redirect to the URL?

Taking the job would require giving up my safe, enjoyable, relaxed job for a risky, stressful, hard one, albeit with the potential to be really great in future. Should I take the job?
