  • realistically speaking, could a seasoned .net developer enter the java space and land a job?

    I've been working with .net since 2001, and I am considering making a move into the java space. I find that java has so many more mature tools (hibernate is more mature, spring framework, established patters/designs, containers, distributed cache frameworks, etc etc.) I have been doing .net, and just recently I have been getting into design patterns, ORMS, etc. and it just seems the .net side of things are not as mature. Yes the trend going forward looks great as more and more are getting into this design strategy etc. I don't want this to get into a flame war, but I read that its not about the framework/stack, but the tools around it are what make the difference. And to me Java seems to be the winner. Anyhow, the real question here is, could I realistically get into shape in 6 months? i.e. Someone would consider hiring me, and not at a junior dev pay rate? Is this a bad idea?

  • Deploying WPF application: .NET 3.5 issues

    Hi all, Users around my country are currently beta-testing our application. My app uses WPF & Linq, so I need .NET 3.5 installation. On most system, everything works find, including automatic installation on .NET 3.5 on machines that do not have that installed yet. However, on one machine (XP SP2) my application does not run. The user reported no issues during .NET 3.5 installation (except for a process that need to close before the installer could continue - he closed the process and continued). The application crashes on startup. To debug this issue, I did the following: Have him reboot his machine Let him manually re-install the .NET 3.5 framework (no errors reported) Have him run a test WPF app that only displays a button - also crashes Let him send the .NET 3.5 installation logs - these are huge, don't now where to look Does anyone have strategy on how to debug such issues? I expect that this will occur more when the application is released..

  • Huge EAR deployment

    Hello all, I'm trying to figure out how to deploy a huge (40-50 MB) EAR file to the server through a rather slow VPN connection. The EAR contains EJB and WAR projects created in Glassfish, and 90% of the file size is from external dependency libraries used. Has anyone came up with a strategy for elegant deployment to production system from Netbeans, where the deployment (over the network) is done only for what is really needed (i.e. just one WAR, not the entire EAR, or just one lib, not the entire libraries subproject). Related to the first point, how to separate external dependency libs from project in Netbeans, so that the project compiles on development machine, but when the EAR/WAR/EJB is created it does not contain all the dependency JARs, which are making it huge. Perhaps we need to write custom ant script? Start using maven? Thank you all for kind answers, Bozo

  • Android Market: Application not visible on some Devices

    Hello, i have written an application that needs to process outgoing calls. Everything works fine, the application has already a few hundred downloads, but now i get feedback from people who would like to download it, yet cannot find it. I have done some tests and have found that the permission "PROCESS_OUTGOING_CALLS" seems to be responsible for this. If i include it in an app, people with branded phones (at least in Germany) cannot find it, as soon as i remove this permission, everything is fine (when i re-insert it again, the app vanishes again) The weird thing is, that those users can see other apps which use this permission in the market. I have compared my manifest file to outputs from other manifest files and cannot understand why it doesn't work.     I'm looking for a .Net 3.5 ORM framework with a rather unusual set of requirements: I need to create and alter tables at runtime with schemas defined by my end-users. (Obviously, that wouldn't be strongly-typed; I'm looking for something like a DataTable there) I also want regular strongly-typed partial classes for rows in non-dynamic tables, with custom validation and other logic. (Like normal ORMs) I want to load the entire database (or some entire tables) once, and keep it in memory throughout the life of the (WinForms) GUI. (I have a shared SQL Server with a relatively slow connection) I also want regular LINQ support (like LINQ-to-SQL) for ASP.Net on the shared server (which has a fast connection to SQL Server) In addition to SQL Server, I also want to be able to use a single-file database that would support XCopy deployment (without installing SQL CE on the end-user's machine). (Probably Access or SQLite) Finally, it has to be free (unless it's OpenAccess) I'll probably have to write it myself, as I don't think there is an existing ORM that meets these requirements. However, I don't want to re-invent the wheel if there is one, hence this question. I'm using VS2010, but I don't know when my webhost (LFC) will upgrade to .Net 4.0

Is there a way to reuse the same table generator (dog_gen) in other entity? I want to keep the same id sequence in two independent Entities, say dog=1, dog=2, dog=3, cat=4, cat=5, dog=6 and so on... Both entities don't share a common superclass to implement some kind of inheritance with the id property. If I add the @GeneratedValue( generator="dog_gen") on my cat entity, omitting the @TableGenerator declaration throws an Exception saying it can't find the generator when starting the context.     I am teaching myself Objective-C utilizing a number of resources, one of which is the Stanford iPhone Dev class available via iTunes U (past 2010 class). One of the home work assignments asked that I populate a mutable dictionary with a predefined list of keys and values (URLs). I was able to put the code together, but as I look at it, I keep thinking there is probably a much better way for me to approach what I'm trying to do: Populate a NSMutableDictionary with the predefined keys and values Enumerate through the keys of the dictionary and check each key to see if it starts with "Stanford" If it meets the criteria, log both the key and the value I would really appreciate any feedback on how I might improve on what I've put together.
