  • Great non-obvious java tricks

    - by folone
    Consider having a class: public class Test { public static void main(String [] args) { for (int i = 0; i < args.length; i++) { System.out.println(args[i]); } } } What happens if you run it: java Test *? Answer: it prints out all the filenames in current directory. Got more such tricks?

  • C# searching for new Tool for the tool box, how to template this code

    - by Nix
    All i have something i have been trying to do for a while and have yet to find a good strategy to do it, i am not sure C# can even support what i am trying to do. Example imagine a template like this, repeated in manager code overarching cocept function Returns a result consisting of a success flag and error list. public Result<Boolean> RemoveLocation(LocationKey key) { List<Error> errorList = new List<Error>(); Boolean result = null; try{ result = locationDAO.RemoveLocation(key); }catch(UpdateException ue){ //Error happened less pass this back to the user! errorList = ue.ErrorList; } return new Result<Boolean>(result, errorList); } Looking to turn it into a template like the below where Do Something is some call (preferably not static) that returns a Boolean. I know i could do this in a stack sense, but i am really looking for a way to do it via object reference. public Result<Boolean> RemoveLocation(LocationKey key) { var magic = locationDAO.RemoveLocation(key); return ProtectedDAOCall(magic); } public Result<Boolean> CreateLocation(LocationKey key) { var magic = locationDAO.CreateLocation(key); return ProtectedDAOCall(magic); } public Result<Boolean> ProtectedDAOCall(Func<..., bool> doSomething) { List<Error> errorList = new List<Error>(); Boolean result = null; try{ result = doSomething(); }catch(UpdateException ue){ //Error happened less pass this back to the user! errorList = ue.ErrorList; } return new Result<Boolean>(result, errorList); } If there is any more information you may need let me know. I am interested to see what someone else can come up with. Marc solution applied to the code above public Result<Boolean> CreateLocation(LocationKey key) { LocationDAO locationDAO = new LocationDAO(); return WrapMethod(() => locationDAO.CreateLocation(key)); } public Result<Boolean> RemoveLocation(LocationKey key) { LocationDAO locationDAO = new LocationDAO(); return WrapMethod(() => locationDAO.RemoveLocation(key)); } static Result<T> WrapMethod<T>(Func<Result<T>> func) { try { return func(); } catch (UpdateException ue) { return new Result<T>(default(T), ue.Errors); } }

  • How to do HTTP authentication with Goliath/Heroku?

    - by David
    I'm using Goliath as my app server, and I am trying to convert "Ruby – Secure staging environment of your public app from users and bots" so it applies to my Goliath application. I am trying to use Rack::Static but I'm not sure how to write the code. I was trying something like: class Application < Goliath::API use(Rack::Lock) But I am not really sure how to translate the link I posted. I'm open to other alternatives, I just need my whole site password protected.

  • How to cache method results in .Net

    - by SP
    Using webmethods, caching the results is pretty straight forward using "CacheDuration" attribute. Is there a similar "easy" way to cache non-webmethod outputs (or static methods) based on the parameters? I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

  • How can I convert HTML to Textile?

    - by Joe Van Dyk
    I'm scraping a static html site and moving the content into a database-backed CMS. I'd like to use Textile in the CMS. Is there a tool out there that converts HTML into Textile, so I can scrape the existing site, convert the HTML to Textile, and insert that data into the database?

  • Is DataRow thread safe? How to update a single datarow in a datatable using multiple threads? - .net

    - by NLV
    Hello all I want to update a single datarow in a datatable using multiple threads. Is this actually possible? I've written the following code implementing a simple multi-threading to update a single datarow. I get different results each time. Why is it so? public partial class Form1 : Form { private static DataTable dtMain; private static string threadMsg = string.Empty; public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { Thread[] thArr = new Thread[5]; dtMain = new DataTable(); dtMain.Columns.Add("SNo"); DataRow dRow; dRow = dtMain.NewRow(); dRow["SNo"] = 5; dtMain.Rows.Add(dRow); dtMain.AcceptChanges(); ThreadStart ts = new ThreadStart(delegate { dtUpdate(); }); thArr[0] = new Thread(ts); thArr[1] = new Thread(ts); thArr[2] = new Thread(ts); thArr[3] = new Thread(ts); thArr[4] = new Thread(ts); thArr[0].Start(); thArr[1].Start(); thArr[2].Start(); thArr[3].Start(); thArr[4].Start(); while (!WaitTillAllThreadsStopped(thArr)) { Thread.Sleep(500); } foreach (Thread thread in thArr) { if (thread != null && thread.IsAlive) { thread.Abort(); } } dgvMain.DataSource = dtMain; } private void dtUpdate() { for (int i = 0; i < 1000; i++) { try { dtMain.Rows[0][0] = Convert.ToInt32(dtMain.Rows[0][0]) + 1; dtMain.AcceptChanges(); } catch { continue; } } } private bool WaitTillAllThreadsStopped(Thread[] threads) { foreach (Thread thread in threads) { if (thread != null && thread.ThreadState == ThreadState.Running) { return false; } } return true; } } Any thoughts on this? Thank you NLV

  • error C2784: Could not deduce template argument

    - by atch
    Hi guys, Still fighting with templates. In this example, despite the fact that is copied straight from a book I'm getting the following error message: Error 2 error C2784: 'IsClassT<T>::One IsClassT<T>::test(int C::* )' : could not deduce template argument for 'int C::* ' from 'int'. This is an example from a book Templates - The Complete Guide. (I work with Visual Studio 2010 RC). template<typename T> class IsClassT { private: typedef char One; typedef struct { char a[2]; } Two; template<typename C> static One test(int C::*); template<typename C> static Two test(…); public: enum { Yes = sizeof(IsClassT<T>::test<T>(0)) == 1 }; enum { No = !Yes }; }; class MyClass { }; struct MyStruct { }; union MyUnion { }; void myfunc() { } enum E {e1} e; // check by passing type as template argument template <typename T> void check() { if (IsClassT<T>::Yes) { std::cout << " IsClassT " << std::endl; } else { std::cout << " !IsClassT " << std::endl; } } // check by passing type as function call argument template <typename T> void checkT (T) { check<T>(); } int main() { /*std::cout << "int: "; check<int>(); */ std::cout << "MyClass: "; check<MyClass>(); } And although I know roughly what's going on in this example I cannot fix this error. Thanks for help.

  • Java ExecutorService java heap space ptoblems

    - by Sergey Aganezov jr
    I have a little bit of a problem in a multitasking java department. I have a class, called public class ThreadWorker implements Runnable { //some code in here public void run(){ // invokes some recursion method in the ThreadWorker itself, // which will stop eventually { } all in all, pretty simple "worker" that can work on it's on. To work with threads I'm using public static int THREAD_NUMBER = 4; public static ExecutorServide es = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(THREAD_NUMBER); adding instances of ThreadWroker class happens here: public void recursiveMethod(Arraylist<Integers> elements, MyClass data){ if (elements.size() == 0 && data.qualifies()){ ThreadWorker tw = new ThreadWorker(data); es.execute(tw); return; } for (int i=0; i< elements.size(); i++){ // some code to prevent my problem MyClass data1 = new MyClass(data); MyClass data2 = new MyClass(data); ArrayList<Integer> newElements = (ArrayList<Integer>)elements.clone(); data1.update(elements.get(i)); data2.update(-1 * elements.get(i)); newElements.remove(i); recursiveMethod(newElements, data1); recursiveMethod(newElements, data2); { } and the problem is that the depth of the recursion tree is quite big, so as it's width, so a lot of ThreadWorkers are added to the ExecutorService, so after some time on the big input a get Exception in thread "pool-1-thread-2" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space which is caused, as I think because of a ginormous number of ThreadWorkers i'm adding to ExecutorSirvice to be executed, so it runs out of memory. Every ThreadWorker takes about 40 Mb of RAM for all it needs. Is there a method to get how many threads (instances of classes implementing runnable interface) have been added to ExecutorService? So I can add it in the shown above code (int the " // some code to prevent my problem"), as while ("number of threads in the ExecutorService" > 10){ Thread.sleep(10000); } so I won't go to deep or to broad with my recursion and prevent those exception-throwing situations. Sincerely, Sergey Aganezov jr.

  • Do fluent interfaces violate the Law of Demeter?

    - by Jakub Šturc
    The wikipedia article about Law of Demeter says: The law can be stated simply as "use only one dot". However a simple example of a fluent interface may look like this: static void Main(string[] args) { new ZRLabs.Yael.Pipeline("cat.jpg") .Rotate(90) .Watermark("Monkey") .RoundCorners(100, Color.Bisque) .Save("test.png"); } So does this goes together?

  • Loading a ConfigurationSection with a required child ConfigurationElement with .Net configuration fr

    - by Vadim Rybak
    I have a console application that is trying to load a CustomConfigurationSection from a web.config file. The custom configuration section has a custom configuration element that is required. This means that when I load the config section, I expect to see an exception if that config element is not present in the config. The problem is that the .NET framework seems to be completely ignoring the isRequired attribute. So when I load the config section, I just creates an instance of the custom configuration element and sets it on the config section. My question is, why is this happening? I want the GetSection() method to fire a ConfigurationErrors exception since a required element is missing from the configuration. Here is how my config section looks. public class MyConfigSection : ConfigurationSection { [ConfigurationProperty("MyConfigElement", IsRequired = true)] public MyConfigElement MyElement { get { return (MyConfigElement) this["MyConfigElement"]; } } } public class MyConfigElement : ConfigurationElement { [ConfigurationProperty("MyAttribute", IsRequired = true)] public string MyAttribute { get { return this["MyAttribute"].ToString(); } } } Here is how I load the config section. class Program { public static Configuration OpenConfigFile(string configPath) { var configFile = new FileInfo(configPath); var vdm = new VirtualDirectoryMapping(configFile.DirectoryName, true, configFile.Name); var wcfm = new WebConfigurationFileMap(); wcfm.VirtualDirectories.Add("/", vdm); return WebConfigurationManager.OpenMappedWebConfiguration(wcfm, "/"); } static void Main(string[] args) { try{ string path = @"C:\Users\vrybak\Desktop\Web.config"; var configManager = OpenConfigFile(path); var configSection = configManager.GetSection("MyConfigSection") as MyConfigSection; MyConfigElement elem = configSection.MyElement; } catch (ConfigurationErrorsException ex){ Console.WriteLine(ex.ToString()); } } Here is what my config file looks like. <?xml version="1.0"?> <configuration> <configSections> <section name="MyConfigSection" type="configurationFrameworkTestHarness.MyConfigSection, configurationFrameworkTestHarness" /> </configSections> <MyConfigSection> </MyConfigSection> The wierd part is that if I open the config file and load the section 2 times in a row, I will get the exception that I expect. var configManager = OpenConfigFile(path); var configSection = configManager.GetSection("MyConfigSection") as MyConfigSection; configManager = OpenConfigFile(path); configSection = configManager.GetSection("MyConfigSection") as MyConfigSection; If I use the code above, then the exception will fire and tell me that MyConfigElement is required. The question is Why is it not throwing this exception the first time??

  • Singleton: How should it be used

    - by Loki Astari
    Edit: From another question I provided an answer that has links to a lot of questions/answers about singeltons: More info about singletons here: So I have read the thread Singletons: good design or a crutch? And the argument still rages. I see Singletons as a Design Pattern (good and bad). The problem with Singleton is not the Pattern but rather the users (sorry everybody). Everybody and their father thinks they can implement one correctly (and from the many interviews I have done, most people can't). Also because everybody thinks they can implement a correct Singleton they abuse the Pattern and use it in situations that are not appropriate (replacing global variables with Singletons!). So the main questions that need to be answered are: When should you use a Singleton How do you implement a Singleton correctly My hope for this article is that we can collect together in a single place (rather than having to google and search multiple sites) an authoritative source of when (and then how) to use a Singleton correctly. Also appropriate would be a list of Anti-Usages and common bad implementations explaining why they fail to work and for good implementations their weaknesses. So get the ball rolling: I will hold my hand up and say this is what I use but probably has problems. I like "Scott Myers" handling of the subject in his books "Effective C++" Good Situations to use Singletons (not many): Logging frameworks Thread recycling pools /* * C++ Singleton * Limitation: Single Threaded Design * See: http://www.aristeia.com/Papers/DDJ_Jul_Aug_2004_revised.pdf * For problems associated with locking in multi threaded applications * * Limitation: * If you use this Singleton (A) within a destructor of another Singleton (B) * This Singleton (A) must be fully constructed before the constructor of (B) * is called. */ class MySingleton { private: // Private Constructor MySingleton(); // Stop the compiler generating methods of copy the object MySingleton(MySingleton const& copy); // Not Implemented MySingleton& operator=(MySingleton const& copy); // Not Implemented public: static MySingleton& getInstance() { // The only instance // Guaranteed to be lazy initialized // Guaranteed that it will be destroyed correctly static MySingleton instance; return instance; } }; OK. Lets get some criticism and other implementations together. :-)

  • What happens when I subscribe to a message using NServiceBus?

    - by Ben Aston
    When I subscribe as the recipient of a certain type of message using NServiceBus Bus.Subscribe<MyMessage>() What am I actually doing? Am I specifying that a particular method on the recipient type will be invoked upon message receipt? If so, within what context does the method run - in a static context, or within the context of a new'd-up parent class instance (and if so, how does NServiceBus know what constructor to use)?

  • ASP.NET MVC, Webform hybrid

    - by Greg Ogle
    We (me and my team) have a ASP.NET MVC application and we are integrating a page or two that are Web Forms. We are trying to reuse the Master Page from our MVC part of the app in the WebForms part. We have found a way of rendering an MVC partial view in web forms, which works great, until we try and do a postback, which is the reason for using a WebForm. The Error: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. The Code to render the partial view from a WebForm (credited to "How to include a partial view inside a webform"): public static class WebFormMVCUtil { public static void RenderPartial(string partialName, object model) { //get a wrapper for the legacy WebForm context var httpCtx = new HttpContextWrapper(System.Web.HttpContext.Current); //create a mock route that points to the empty controller var rt = new RouteData(); rt.Values.Add("controller", "WebFormController"); //create a controller context for the route and http context var ctx = new ControllerContext( new RequestContext(httpCtx, rt), new WebFormController()); //find the partial view using the viewengine var view = ViewEngines.Engines.FindPartialView(ctx, partialName).View; //create a view context and assign the model var vctx = new ViewContext(ctx, view, new ViewDataDictionary { Model = model }, new TempDataDictionary()); //ERROR OCCURS ON THIS LINE view.Render(vctx, System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Response.Output); } } My only experience with this error is in context of a web farm, which is not the case. Also, I understand that the machine key is used for decrypting the ViewState. Any information on how to diagnose this issue would be appreciated. A Work-around: So far the work-around is to move the header content to a PartialView, then use an AJAX call to call a page with just the Partial View from the WebForms, and then using the PartialView directly on the MVC Views. Also, we are still able to share non-tech-specific parts of the Master Page, i.e. anything that is not MVC specific. Still yet, this is not an ideal solution, a server-side solution is still desired. Also, this solutino has issues when working with controls that have more sophisticated controls, using JavaScript, particularly dynamically generated script as used by 3rd party controls.

  • css table column width not set

    - by bsreekanth
    Hello, I'm trying to set the width of table column to a minimum value. The header row (th) was set white-space:nowrap to prevent wrapping. Now all the columns (including td rows) set to a width that of th. I tried to expand the size of smaller columns by setting it in the html as <th style="width:200px;"> and <td style="width:200px;">, but it has no effect. In firebug, in the style section, the width setting is active element.style { width:200px; } Still, the computed tab shows the width is less than 200px. • Safely remove window subclassing?

    - by Vegard Larsen
    I am trying to subclass the currently focused window on a Windows system using a global CBT hook. This is related to what happens in this question, but the bug is different. What happens when this subclassing is in effect, is that Opera's (version 10.50) main window is prevented from displaying. Opera has a "splash screen" where you are required to click "Start" for the main window to show that appears after Opera has not shut down properly. Whenever this window pops up, Opera's main window won't show. If Opera was shut down properly, and this splash screen does not show, the main window displays as it should. HHOOK hHook; HWND hWndSubclass = 0; void SubclassWindow(HWND hWnd) { Unsubclass(); FARPROC lpfnOldWndProc = (FARPROC)SetWindowLongPtr(hWnd, GWLP_WNDPROC, (LPARAM)SubClassFunc); SetProp(hWnd, L"PROP_OLDWNDPROC", lpfnOldWndProc); hWndSubclass = hWnd; } void Unsubclass() { if (hWndSubclass != 0 && IsWindow(hWndSubclass)) { FARPROC lpfnOldWndProc = (FARPROC)GetProp(hWndSubclass, L"PROP_OLDWNDPROC"); RemoveProp(hWndSubclass, L"PROP_OLDWNDPROC"); SetWindowLongPtr(hWndSubclass, GWLP_WNDPROC, (LPARAM)lpfnOldWndProc); hWndSubclass = 0; } } static LRESULT CALLBACK SubClassFunc(HWND hWnd, UINT message, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam) { if (message == WM_MOVING) { // do something irrelevant } else if (message == WM_DESTROY) { Unsubclass(); } FARPROC lpfnOldWndProc = (FARPROC)GetProp(hWndSubclass, L"PROP_OLDWNDPROC"); return CallWindowProc((WNDPROC)lpfnOldWndProc, hWndSubclass, message, wParam, lParam); } static LRESULT CALLBACK CBTProc(int nCode, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam) { if (nCode == HCBT_SETFOCUS && hWndServer != NULL) { SubclassWindow((HWND)wParam); } if (nCode < 0) { return CallNextHookEx(hHook, nCode, wParam, lParam); } return 0; } BOOL APIENTRY DllMain( HINSTANCE hInstance, DWORD Reason, LPVOID Reserved ) { switch(Reason) { case DLL_PROCESS_ATTACH: hInst = hInstance; return TRUE; case DLL_PROCESS_DETACH: Unsubclass(); return TRUE; } return TRUE; } My suspicion is that Opera's main window is somehow already subclassed. I imagine the following is happening: The window is created with it's own basic WndProc, and is given focus My application subclasses the window, storing the original WndProc Opera subclasses its own window When the window loses focus, I restore the original WndProc, thus ignoring the second WndProc Can this really be the case? Are there any other explanations?
