• How to detect if google chrome rss plugin is installed-php?

    - by zeina
    I'm working on a word press project. I noticed that rss is not working fine on google chrome. After I googled about it, it turned out that I need to install a plugin for google chrome so rss works. I want to know how to detect if the plugin is installed or not in case the user is using chrome browser. Currently I'm doing the following: function is_chrome() { return(eregi("chrome", $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'])); } if(is_chrome()) { // I want to check if plugin installed or not here. }

  • Help with PHP simplehtmldom - Modifiying a form.

    - by onemyndseye
Ive gotten some great help here and I am so close to solving my problem that I can taste it. But I seem to be stuck. I need to scrape a simple form from a local webserver and only return the lines that match a users local email (i.e. onemyndseye@localhost). simplehtmldom makes easy work of extracting the correct form element: foreach($html->find('form[action*="delete"]') as $form) echo $form; Returns: http://www.linux.com/rss/feeds.php [email: onemyndseye@localhost (Default) ]
http://www.ubuntu.com/rss.xml [email: onemyndseye@localhost (Default) ]
However I am having trouble making the next step. Which is returning lines that contain 'onemyndseye@localhost' and removing it so that only the following is returned: http://www.linux.com/rss/feeds.php
http://www.ubuntu.com/rss.xml
Thanks to the wonderful users of this site Ive gotten this far and can even return just the links but I am having trouble getting the rest... Its important that the complete tags are returned EXACTLY as shown above as the id and name values will need to be passed back to the original form in post data later on. Thanks in advance!

  • SEO Implications of blog on site versus offsite?

    - by Kelli Davis
I recently added a blog to one of our company's websites, and was confident that this increase in content on the site would have only positive SEO results. My boss, however, feels that we should have instead located the blog off-site, on a blogging platform such as Wordpress, Typepad, etc., in order to generate a backlink (assuming we'd link from blogging platform back to website.) While I know that backlinks are important for SEO, isn't content creation equally, if not more, important? Granted, I'd be creating content either way, but I figured we'd get more site traffic by having the blog located on our site versus a separate blogging platform. Am I incorrect in my priorities here? Boss's TOP priority is increasing the ranking of our website, so maybe a backlink would be better...? If we do need to relocate the blog to an off-site platform, is there a blogging platform that is more conducive to SEO than others? Is there a platform from which backlinks would be more valuable than others?

  • Search engine friendly, SEO blog software

    - by Steve
Is there a comparison of the SEO capabilities of different blogging software/blogging plugins? I'd like things to be as optimised as possible. I have a basic grasp of SEO principles, probably 12-24 months old. I'm about to start a blog, after having a few previously. Also, I'm not up to speed on what pings are in the blogging world. What are they, and how do they work? I assume it is best to have blogging software that automatically pings.

  • : in node causing Keyerror in xmlparsing using ElementTree

    - by kguckian
Hi I'm using ElementTree to parse out an xml feed from Kuler. I'm only beginning in python but am stuck here. The parsing works fine until I attempt to retrieve any nodes containing ':' e.g kuler:swatchHexColor Below is a cut down version of the full feed but same structure:

kuler popular themes

Theme Title: Fresh Money

<img src="http://kuler-api.adobe.com/kuler/themeImages/theme_808366.png" /><br /> Artist: thesylph005<br /> ThemeID: 808366<br /> Posted: 03/02/2010<br /> Hex: 2F400D, 8CBF26, A8CA65, E8E5B0, 419184
<kuler:themeItem> <kuler:themeID>808366</kuler:themeID> <kuler:themeTitle>Fresh Money</kuler:themeTitle> <kuler:themeImage>http://kuler-api.adobe.com/kuler/themeImages/theme_808366.png</kuler:themeImage> <kuler:themeAuthor> <kuler:authorID>370750</kuler:authorID> <kuler:authorLabel>thesylph005</kuler:authorLabel> </kuler:themeAuthor> <kuler:themeTags/> <kuler:themeRating>4</kuler:themeRating> <kuler:themeDownloadCount>708</kuler:themeDownloadCount> <kuler:themeCreatedAt>20100302</kuler:themeCreatedAt> <kuler:themeEditedAt>20100302</kuler:themeEditedAt> <kuler:themeSwatches> <kuler:swatch> <kuler:swatchHexColor>2F400D</kuler:swatchHexColor> <kuler:swatchColorMode>rgb</kuler:swatchColorMode> <kuler:swatchChannel1>0.183333</kuler:swatchChannel1> <kuler:swatchChannel2>0.25</kuler:swatchChannel2> <kuler:swatchChannel3>0.05</kuler:swatchChannel3> <kuler:swatchChannel4>0.0</kuler:swatchChannel4> <kuler:swatchIndex>0</kuler:swatchIndex> </kuler:swatch> <kuler:swatch> <kuler:swatchHexColor>8CBF26</kuler:swatchHexColor> <kuler:swatchColorMode>rgb</kuler:swatchColorMode> <kuler:swatchChannel1>0.55</kuler:swatchChannel1> <kuler:swatchChannel2>0.75</kuler:swatchChannel2> <kuler:swatchChannel3>0.15</kuler:swatchChannel3> <kuler:swatchChannel4>0.0</kuler:swatchChannel4> <kuler:swatchIndex>1</kuler:swatchIndex> </kuler:swatch> <kuler:swatch> <kuler:swatchHexColor>A8CA65</kuler:swatchHexColor> <kuler:swatchColorMode>rgb</kuler:swatchColorMode> <kuler:swatchChannel1>0.659722</kuler:swatchChannel1> <kuler:swatchChannel2>0.791667</kuler:swatchChannel2> <kuler:swatchChannel3>0.395833</kuler:swatchChannel3> <kuler:swatchChannel4>0.0</kuler:swatchChannel4> <kuler:swatchIndex>2</kuler:swatchIndex> </kuler:swatch> <kuler:swatch> <kuler:swatchHexColor>E8E5B0</kuler:swatchHexColor> <kuler:swatchColorMode>rgb</kuler:swatchColorMode> <kuler:swatchChannel1>0.91</kuler:swatchChannel1> <kuler:swatchChannel2>0.898047</kuler:swatchChannel2> <kuler:swatchChannel3>0.688705</kuler:swatchChannel3> <kuler:swatchChannel4>0.0</kuler:swatchChannel4> <kuler:swatchIndex>3</kuler:swatchIndex> </kuler:swatch> <kuler:swatch> <kuler:swatchHexColor>419184</kuler:swatchHexColor> <kuler:swatchColorMode>rgb</kuler:swatchColorMode> <kuler:swatchChannel1>0.254901</kuler:swatchChannel1> <kuler:swatchChannel2>0.57</kuler:swatchChannel2> <kuler:swatchChannel3>0.519034</kuler:swatchChannel3> <kuler:swatchChannel4>0.0</kuler:swatchChannel4> <kuler:swatchIndex>4</kuler:swatchIndex> </kuler:swatch> </kuler:themeSwatches> Tue, 30 Mar 2010 11:27:12 PST So if I do a findall on say each item's description, I get that back fine. But the minute I try to retrieve anything with a : in the nodename I get Exception Type: KeyError Exception Value: ':' So this works from elementtree.ElementTree import Element, SubElement, dump, parse def xml(): kulerurl = 'http://kuler-api.adobe.com/rss/get.cfm?listType=popular&startIndex=0&itemsPerPage=5&timeSpan=30&key=mykey' rss = parse(urllib.urlopen(kulerurl)).getroot() for element in rss.findall('channel/item'): print(element.findtext('description')) dump (rss) but this doesn't def xml(): kulerurl = 'http://kuler-api.adobe.com/rss/get.cfm?listType=popular&startIndex=0&itemsPerPage=5&timeSpan=30&key=mykey' rss = parse(urllib.urlopen(kulerurl)).getroot() for element in rss.findall('channel/item/kuler:themeItem'): print(element.findtext('kuler:themeID')) dump (rss) I'm sure it's something simple if anyone could point me to what I'm doing wrong here I'd be most grateful thanks Kieran

  • SQL Monitor Alerts in Outlook Without Configuring Email Settings

    - by Fatherjack
SQL Monitor is a Red Gate tool that I have a long history with and I have worked closely with the development team from a time before it was called SQL Monitor. It is with that history in mind I am a little disappointed in myself that I have only just found out about a pretty cool feature. Out of the box SQL Monitor keeps itself to itself, it busily goes about watching over your servers, noting down when things look suspicious, change drastically or are just out and out wrong. You have to go into the settings and provide email details (SMTP server, account details etc.) before it starts getting at all intrusive with warning and alerts on the condition of your servers. However, it was after installing the most recent version that I was going through the application screen by screen looking for new and interesting changes that I noticed something that had avoided my attention. On the Alerts tab there is an option in the left hand menu. I don’t know how long ago it appeared or why I have never explored it previously but it appears that you can see your Alerts in the format of an RSS feed. Now when you click that link you are taken to a page that is the raw RSS XML – not too interesting but clearly you can use this in an RSS aggregator. Such as Outlook. Note the URL in the newly opened page take it with you into Outlook. For me it is in the form of http://SQLMonitorServerName/Alerts/Inbox/Feed. Again, this is something that I have only recently noticed – Outlook can aggregate RSS feeds. Down below the Inbox, Drafts folders etc, one up from the bottom is RSS Feeds. If you right click that and choose to Add a feed then you can supply the URL for SQL Monitor Alerts: And there you have it, your SQL Monitor Alerts available in Outlook where you can keep an eye on the number of unread items and pick them off at your convenience.

  • Multiblog engine for asp.net

    - by Andrey
I know, different forms of this questions were asked on this site multiple times, but I haven't seen a single answer that would satisfy my need. I need a ASP.NET based blogging engine that wouul use SQL Server as a back end and allow multiple independet blogs in one app instance. I'm writing a community website for major bank and blogging is the piece I'm not sure about. Answers to other questions include a broad spectrum from BlogEngine.NET (doesn't support multiple blogs) to CommunityServer (a beast! blogging is just asmall piece of it). I don't want to install a full-blown CRM and just use blogging, I want a blogging engine. I don't mind to buy a commercial one but I can't find one. I'm pretty much stuck, and any ideas are highly appreciated!

  • Life Is Full Of Changes (Part 1)

    - by Brian Jackett
Today will be my last day with Sogeti. I’ve been with Sogeti USA for just over 4 years. In that time I’ve gotten to work on some great projects, develop relationships with some brilliant and passionate people, participate in the .Net developer and SharePoint communities, and grow my skills in a number of areas I’m passionate about. As with all good things they must come to an end though. I’ve accepted a position with another company and will provide more details once the transition has completed. This decision was a difficult one to make but it provides a great career opportunity on many levels. As much as my new schedule allows I plan to continue participating in local user groups, speaking at conferences, and blogging. Speaking of which, you may have noticed my reduced blogging activity in the past few months. In addition to a career change I’m also in the process of moving to a new residence (only a few miles from my current residence, so I’ll still be in Columbus.) Searching for a new place, filling out paperwork, and all of the other work associated with this move has taken away a good chunk of the time I used to devote to blogging. Once everything gets settled out with the move and job change I’ll re-evaluate how much time I can devote to blogging. A big thanks to Sogeti and everyone who has been so supportive over my time with them. It’s hard to move on, but I am excited for the prospects that the future will bring. -Frog Out

One really cool part of my job is selecting the articles for the Daily Community Spotlight, on the home page of the ASP.NET website. The spotlight highlights a new post about ASP.NET development every day from a member of the ASP.NET community. You can find it on the home page of the ASP.NET site, at http://asp.net These posts aren't automatically drawn from a pool of RSS feeds or anything - I pick a new post for each day of the year. How I pick the posts I have a few important selection criteria: Interesting to well rounded ASP.NET developers The ASP.NET website has a lot of material for all skill and experience levels, from download / get started to advanced. I try to select community spotlight posts to round that out with fresh and timely information that working ASP.NET developers can really use. Posts highlight solutions to common problems, clever projects and code that helps you leverage ASP.NET, and important announcements about things you can use today. As part of that, I try to mix between ASP.NET MVC, Web Forms, and Web Pages (a.k.a. WebMatrix). As a professional developer, I want to keep on top of all of my options for ASP.NET development, and the common platform base they all share generally means that good ASP.NET code is good ASP.NET code. Exposing new and non-Microsoft community members as much as possible The exercise of selecting good ASP.NET community posts every day of the year has made me think about what the community is. Given the choice, I'll always favor non-Microsoft employees, but since Microsoft often hires ASP.NET community members and MVP's (myself included), I really think that the ASP.NET community includes developers who are using and writing about ASP.NET, both inside and outside of Microsoft. I'm especially excited about the opportunity to highlight new and lesser known bloggers. Usually being featured on the ASP.NET Community Spotlight gives a pretty good traffic bump, and I love being able to both provide great content to the community and encourage lesser known community members by giving them some (much deserved) attention. Announcements only when they're useful to working developers - not marketing Some of the posts are announcements about new releases, such as Scott Hanselman's post on ASP.NET Universal Providers for Session, Memebership, and Roles. I include those when I think they're interesting and of immediate use to you on projects. I occasionally get asked to link to new content from a team at Microsoft; if it's useful and timely content I'll ask them to point me to a blog post by an actual person rather than a faceless team. How the posts are managed This feed used to be managed by an internal spreadsheet on a Sharepoint site, which was painful for a lot of reasons. I took a cue from Jon Udell, who uses of a public Delicious feed feed for his Elm City project, and we moved the management of these posts over to a Delicious feed as well. You can hear more about Jon's use of Delicious in Elm City in our Herding Code interview - still one of my favorite interviews. We ended up with a simpler scenario, but Note: I watched the Yahoo/Delicious news over the past year and was happy to see that Delicious was recently acquired by the founders of YouTube. I investigated several other Delicious competitors, but am happy with Delicious for now. My Delicious feed here: http://www.delicious.com/jon_galloway You can also browse through this past year's ASP.NET Community Spotlight posts using the (pretty cool) Delicious Browse Bar Submitting articles I'm always on the lookout for new articles to feature. The best way to get them to me is to share them via Delicious. It's pretty easy - sign up for an account, then you can add a post and share it to me. Alternatively, you can send them to me via Twitter (@jongalloway) or e-mail (). If you do e-mail me, it helps to include a short description and your full name so I can credit you. Way too many developer blogs don't include names and pictures; if I can't find them I can't feature the post. Subscribing to the Community Spotlight feed The Community Spotlight is available as an RSS feed, so you might want to subscribe to it: http://www.asp.net/rss/spotlight Setting the ASP.NET Community Spotlight feed as your Visual Studio start page If you're an ASP.NET developer, you might consider setting the ASP.NET Community Spotlight as the content for your Visual Studio Start Page. It's really easy - here's how to do it in Visual Studio 2010: Display the Visual Studio Start Page if it's not already showing (View / Start Page) Click on the Latest News tab and enter the following RSS URL: http://www.asp.net/rss/spotlight If you didn't previously have RSS feeds enabled for your start page, click the Enable RSS Feed button Now, every time you start up Visual Studio you'll see great content from members of the ASP.NET community: You can also configure - and disable, if you'd like - the Visual Studio start page in the Tools / Options / Environment / Startup dialog. Credits I'll do a follow-up highlighting some places I commonly find great content for the feed, but I'd like to specifically point out two of them: Elijah Manor posts a lot of great content, which is available in his Twitter feed at @elijahmanor, on his Delicious feed, and on a dedicated website - Web Dev Tweets Chris Alcock's The Morning Brew is a must-read blog which highlights each day's best blog posts across the .NET community. He's an absolute machine, and no matter how obscure the post I find, I can guarantee he'll find it as well if he hasn't already. Did I say must read?

  • How to limit a google calendar xml / rss feed by date range (not working!!)

    - by Phil
For the life of me I cannot get my google calendar xml feed to only display events within a certain date range. I know that start-min and start-max are supposed to limit the output (according to these posts: (links to posts deleted because I am a newbie and can only post one hyperlink argh) BUT I CAN'T GET IT TO WORK. It keeps showing lot of things outside the range. I created a sample calendar and made it public. It is some events the first week of april. Can anyone show me how to construct a request that only returns those three events from the first week in april? I'll GLADLY and GRATEFULLY paypal $10 to anyone who helps me break through on this. Here is the calendar's public feed: http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/66m31c36sj9u5k8kekrvt2lpr8%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic

  • How do i parse the new wow RSS feed? (LINQ to XML)

    - by Sunzaru Sven
The link i want to parse is here. I'm looking to parse it in "real time" so that as things happen i can send myself messages/tweets and what not. I plan on having each element of the XML from the feed as an item of a class/struct. I'm really looking for LINQ to XML examples, and a good book. I've seen other LINQ to XML articles out there, but i'm just not grasping how they work. Old SQL minds are hard to break perhaps... /shrug.

  • SQL SERVER – Beginning SQL Server: One Step at a Time – SQL Server Magazine

    - by pinaldave
I am glad to announce that along with SQLAuthority.com, I will be blogging on the prominent site of SQL Server Magazine. My very first blog post there is already live; read here: Beginning SQL Server: One Step at a Time. My association with SQL Server Magazine has been quite long, I have written nearly 7 to 8 SQL Server articles for the print magazine and it has been a great experience. I used to stay in the United States at that time. I moved back to India for good, and during this process, I had put everything on hold for a while. Just like many things, “temporary” things become “permanent” – coming back to SQLMag was on hold for long time. Well, this New Year, things have changed – once again, I am back with my online presence at SQLMag.com. Everybody is a beginner at every task or activity at some point of his/her life: spelling words for the first time; learning how to drive for the first time, etc. No one is perfect at the start of any task, but every human is different. As time passes, we all develop our interests and begin to study our subject of interest. Most of us dream to get a job in the area of our study – however things change as time passes. I recently read somewhere online (I could not find the link again while writing this one) that all the successful people in various areas have never studied in the area in which they are successful. After going through a formal learning process of what we love, we refuse to stop learning, and we finally stop changing career and focus areas. We move, we dare and we progress. IT field is similar to our life. New IT professionals come to this field every day. There are two types of beginners – a) those who are associated with IT field but not familiar with other technologies, and b) those who are absolutely new to the IT field. Learning a new technology is always exciting and overwhelming for enthusiasts. I am working with database (in particular) for SQL Server for more than 7 years but I am still overwhelmed with so many things to learn. I continue to learn and I do not think that I should ever stop doing so. Just like everybody, I want to be in the race and get ahead in learning the technology. For the same, I am always looking for good guidance. I always try to find a good article, blog or book chapter, which can teach me what I really want to learn at this stage in my career and can be immensely helpful. Quite often, I prefer to read the material where the author does not judge me or assume my understanding. I like to read new concepts like a child, who takes his/her first steps of learning without any prior knowledge. Keeping my personal philosophy and preference in mind, I will be blogging on SQL Server Magazine site. I will be blogging on the beginners stuff. I will be blogging for them, who really want to start and make a mark in this area. I will be blogging for all those who have an extreme passion for learning. I am happy that this is a good start for this year. One of my resolutions is to help every beginner. It is totally possible that in future they all will grow and find the same article quite ‘easy‘ – well when that happens, it indicates the success of the article and material! Well, I encourage everybody to read my SQL Server Magazine blog – I will be blogging there frequently on various topics. To begin, we will be talking about performance tuning, and I assure that I will not shy away from other multiple areas. Read my SQL Server Magazine Blog: Beginning SQL Server: One Step at a Time I think the title says it all. Do leave your comments and feedback to indicate your preference of subject and interest. I am going to continue writing on subject, and the aim is of course to help grow in this field. • How to add sitemap of a blogger blog to Google webmaster tools?

    - by Chankey Pathak
I have two blogs. Let's say http://name.blogspot.com/ and the other one is http://name2.blogspot.com/ For blog 1: While submitting sitemap to Google webmaster tool I selected the option and then added rss.xml at last. (http://name.blogspot.com/rss.xml) Sitemap added successfully. For blog 2: I followed the same procedure but it didn't work. Then I tried to open the url (http://name.blogspot.com/rss.xml). The url was showing the atom feeds. I tried same with the other blog but that url is redirecting to the feedburner feeds. I think this is the reason why the other blog's sitemap is not getting submitted. Help me with it.
