  • Entity Framework with large systems - how to divide models?

    I'm working with a SQL Server database with 1000+ tables, another few hundred views, and several thousand stored procedures. We are looking to start using Entity Framework for our newer projects, and we are working on our strategy for doing so. The thing I'm hung up on is how best to split the tables into different models (EDMX or DbContext if we go code first). I can think of a few strategies right off the bat: Split by schema We have our tables split across probably a dozen schemas. We could do one model per schema. This isn't perfect, though, because dbo still ends up being very large, with 500+ tables / views. Another problem is that certain units of work will end up having to do transactions that span multiple models, which adds to complexity, although I assume EF makes this fairly straightforward. Split by intent Instead of worrying about schemas, split the models by intent. So we'll have different models for each application, or project, or module, or screen, depending on how granular we want to get. The problem I see with this is that there are certain tables that inevitably have to be used in every case, such as User or AuditHistory. Do we add those to every model (violates DRY I think), or are those in a separate model that is used by every project? Don't split at all - one giant model This is obviously simple from a development perspective but from my research and my intuition this seems like it could perform terribly, both at design time, compile time, and possibly run time. What is the best practice for using EF against such a large database? Specifically what strategies do people use in designing models against this volume of DB objects? Are there options that I'm not thinking of that work better than what I have above? Also, is this a problem in other ORMs such as NHibernate? If so have they come up with any better solutions than EF?

For example, is it possible to combine the last two statements below so allValues is only traversed once? IEnumerable<MyObj> allValues = ...     I have a 32 bit long variable, CurrentPosition, that I want to split up into 4, 8bit characters. How would I do that most efficiently in C?   • How to split movie and play parts to look as a whole?

    I'm writing software which is demonstraiting video on demand service. One of the feature is something similiar to IIS Smooth Streaming - I want to adjust quality to the bandwith of the client. My idea is, to split single movie into many, let's say - 2 seconds parts, in different qualities and then send it to the client and play them. The point is that for example first part can be in very high quality, and second in really poor (if the bandwith seems to be poor). The question is - do you know any software that allows me to cut movies precisly? For example ffmpeg splits movies in a way that join is visible and really annoying (seconds are the measure of precision). I use qt + phonon as a player if it matters. Or maybe you know any better way to provide such feature, without splitting movie into parts?

  • What is the recommended way to split messages in send pipelines?

    I need to split a bizTalk message in the send pipeline. This is easy with disassemblers in receive pipelines, but doesn't work in send pipelines (makes sense). So what is the recommended way to do it? The only easy way to do it is to write the outbound message to file, then reprocess it using a receive pipeline with a disassembler, and then send the generated messages through a outbound pipeline. Honestly, I don't need the additional roundtrip through the message box, but I don't want to create a custom send adapter. Any other suggestions? Any easy way to save messages with multiple parts using the ootb file adapter?

    Hi, I'm having trouble doing the following: I have a big PDF file that I converted to postscript (for commercial printing). The resulting file is too big to be processed by the printer (machine). I've been trying to find a way to either: Convert from the original (many pages) PDF file to many Postscript file (one postcript file per PDF page in original PDF file(. Convert from PDF to PS (or even EPS). - I managed to do this Then split the PS file into a collection of smaller files. I've tried using Ghostscript, but it is all gibberish to me. Thanks. PS. If you have a good GS tutorial (for dummies?), please share the link.

    I have two types of strings as the IDs of elements in my HTML markup: Dates: "april-23" "march-20" and season names: "springtime" "winter" The dates have a dash separating the month and the day. The seasons are a single word with no other tokens. I want to assign the month or the season to a new variable called: time_of_year If I do this: var time_of_year = $(this).attr("id").split('-')[0]; It will work on the months but if I call it on a season name which does not contain the token, will it generate an error? What's the safe way to do this?

    Hi all: I am working on The ausdcf.org to try adding several banner ads in swf format to the top. Everything starts to work, but I've got several questions that need your help: The client chose not to go with Google AdManager, but prefer a "minimal approach" to do this task. What I am trying to do is sort of "mimicking" the way Google AdManager does for banners, that is, to split the chance of each particular swf to be shown to the visitor evenly among the banner collection. Definitely I can add some jQuery code to do this from client-side, a random number generator and if-else statement would work - just $.load() it! However, what if I'd like to make sure those disabled Javascript (is there any now btw?) still be able to see different swfs in each visit. Any suggestion on how to approach this?     I'd like to slice a string up in a similar way to .split() (so resulting in a list) but in a more intelligent way: I'd like it to split it into chunks that are up to 15 characters, but are not split mid word so: string = 'A string with words' [splitting process takes place] list = ('A string with','words') The string in this example is split between 'with' and 'words' because that's the last place you can split it and the first bit be 15 characters or less.

    My new laptop has a big 16:9 screen, and I'm finding it hard to fully utilize it during the 95% of the time that I'm not watching HD movies on it. I'd like to set it up as a kind of virtual dual screen by splitting the physical screen into two workspaces. I know I could arrange my windows manually, but I'd like to be able to maximize a window and have it only consume half the monitor, and have its pop up dialogs centered on its half-screen, that sort of thing.     I'm setting up the server environment for a new software development group, which will include 4 test environments. These are web applications, so each environment will have an application server and a database server. I'm planning on buying two physical servers (e.g. 6-core CPU each with 12GB or so of RAM), and I'm thinking virtualization is appropriate here. With that in mind, I've thought of a couple ways that I could organize the virtualization strategy: - Separated by server role: Server 1 has all the application servers, each in their own guest VM. Server 2 has all the databases. OR - Separated by environment: Server 1 has a VM for two of the environments, with the VM containing both the app server and the database server. Server 2 would also contain two test environments, with the same style (app server and database in same VM). The advantages I see with all the app servers on one server and all the databases on another server is that I could probably be more efficient with the database server (one instance running multiple databases). But the other option seems easier to manage (archives/restorations would be contained in a single VM). Any recommendations? TIA.
