  • How do I use logback-access in combination with Tomcat 5.5?

    I've got several Web apps running on a Tomcat 5.5 server, and I'm working on improving/updating the overall logging system used throughout the system. I already had some success with logback-classic. However, when I try to use logback-access (i.e. access the lbAccessStatus servlet), I get this exception: exception javax.servlet.ServletException: Wrapper cannot find servlet class ch.qos.logback.access.ViewStatusMessagesServlet or a class it depends on org.apache.catalina.authenticator.AuthenticatorBase.invoke(AuthenticatorBase.java:433) ... root cause java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: ch.qos.logback.access.ViewStatusMessagesServlet org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader.loadClass(WebappClassLoader.java:1386) ... I have everything set up according to the docs: common/lib: logback-classic-0.9.15.jar logback-core-0.9.15.jar server/lib: logback-access-0.9.15.jar Moving around the libraries doesn't seem to help. logback-classic seems to work fine, it's just logback-access that causes problems.

  • Getting IIS6 to play nice with WordPress Pretty Permalinks

    I've got a WordPress powered blog that I'm trying to get setup on our IIS6 server and everything works besides the permalink structure which I'm having a big headache with. After googling around/wordpress codex I learned that it's because IIS6 doesn't have the equivalent of Apache's mod_rewrite which is required for this feature to work. So that's where I'm at now. I can't seem to find a functional solution to get the pretty permalinks to work without the "index.php/," anyone have any recommendations? What I can't do: Upgrade to IIS7 Switch to Apache Quit my job Those suggestions have been offered to me, which sadly, I can't do any of those. Just an, FYI. Much thanks for anyone who can lead me in the right direction.

  • Tomcat gzip while chunked issue

    I'm expiriencing some problem with one of my data source services. As it says in HTTP response headers it's running on Apache-Coyote/1.1. Server gives responses with Transfer-Encoding: chunked, here sample response: HTTP/1.1 200 OK Server: Apache-Coyote/1.1 Content-Type: text/xml;charset=utf-8 Transfer-Encoding: chunked Content-Encoding: gzip Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2010 06:13:52 GMT And problem is when I'm requesting server to send gzipped request it often sends not full response. I recieve response, see that last chunk recieved, but then after ungzipping I see that response is partial. I never seen such behavior with gzip turned off in request headers. So my question is: is it common tomcat issue? maybe one of it's mod which is doing compression? Or maybe it maybe some kind of proxy issue? I can't tell about versions of tomcat or what gzip mod they use, but feel free to ask, i'll try ask my service provider. Thanks.

  • Using Linux vs Windows for development

    On my servers I run everything on Linux/ Apache, but for offline preparation before upload of the projects I'm using Windows (Vista) with a local Apache/ WAMP, PHP, Python, GD_image installation and so on. My question, would it be much easier in terms of setting up a good environment if I were to use Linux, e.g. Ubuntu distribution, as development OS for these things? Would you know some pros and cons when it comes to Windows vs Linux in terms of web development? (As I'm using mostly web apps these days, switching the OS might be less of a problem. I would need a good replacement for my image editor, though, as I prefer Corel PhotoPaint and PSP4 over Gimp, last time I tried.)

  • How to scale MySQL with multiple machines?

    I have a web app running LAMP. We recently have an increase in load and is now looking at solutions to scale. Scaling apache is pretty easy we are just going to have multiple multiple machines hosting it and round robin the incoming traffic. However, each instance of apache will talk with MySQL and eventually MySQL will be overloaded. How to scale MySQL across multiple machines in this setup? I have already looked at this but specifically we need the updates from the DB available immediately so I don't think replication is a good strategy here? Also hopefully this can be done with minimal code change. PS. We have around a 1:1 read-write ratio.

  • Preload a lot of tiny pics

    I'm thinking about how to approach the problem at hand. There's a flash movie that requires a lot of relativly small images and I'm trying to optimize the time it takes for them to be preloaded. One thing I've considered it turning on KeepAlive in Apache on the server side. That works. But my mind still wonders if there's anything else ;-) So, what other approaches I may try? Is there a way to compress all those images and then unpack on client side? I have full control on both server and client side. Can even try installing something other than Apache. Cache is not an option because it already works and it's first time loading that bothers me here.

  • Combining deflate and minify - am i creating overhead?

    I minify my css and js files on the fly with google.codes minify. I have also set my .htaccess to use deflate on all my css and js files - the reason beeing some js files (like shadowbox and tinymce) reference to other js files in the code. So i'm compressing with apache deflate and also minify compresses some js and css files with gzip - am i creating overhead by doing this - first gzipping (minify) and then zlib (deflate) will run through again. Or will apache deflate ignore the already gzipped files having the attributes set by minify in the headers. Anyone have any experiences with this?

  • "Disabled use of AcceptEx() WinSock2 API" error on Windows 7 using Tomcat

    When starting Tomcat 6 on Windows 7 Enterprise with JRE 6 using C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 6.0\bin\tomcat6.exe the application does not open and my event viewer has the message: "Disabled use of AcceptEx() WinSock2 API." The same installer of Tomcat worked on Windows Vista before I upgraded my operating system. Can anyone please suggest a way to fix this? The only site I can find mentioning this is http://www.apachelounge.com/viewtopic.php?p=4418 which suggests using this config setting "Win32DisableAcceptEx" - but it's for Apache, not Tomcat, and I have no idea where in what config file it might need to go in Tomcat.

  • XAMPP or MAMP on Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard)

    I just bought a new MacBook Pro which comes with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (Mac OS X 10.6.2). I am used to using XAMPP as my local development server on XP. Since Mac OS X is based on Unix, I was thinking on activating/installing all the necessary stuff as I would normally do on Linux. However, I am not quite ready to be playing around with the system at this point so having an external package would be a nice temporary solution I think. The question is whether I should go with MAMP or XAMPP. Does anybody have any suggestions? The Pro and Cons I suppose. As far as I know, Mac OS X comes with Apache2 and PHP5. Would MAMP or XAMPP modify the existing Apache and PHP installation? Any comments on how I should proceed? PS: Eventually I would use the default installation of Apache and PHP, and install a binary package of MySQL but time for development is an essence and I don't have time to familiarize myself with Mac OS X.

  • Reusing xalan transformer causing its extension functions break

    I am using xalan 2.7.1 to validate my xml docs with xslt style sheet. It works fine for the first document and returns error message in case of error along with correct line and column number of xml source by making use of NodeInfo.lineNumber and NodeInfo.columnNumber extensions. The problem is when I try to reuse transformer to validate other xml docs, it successfully transforms the document but always returns lineNumber=columnNumber=-1 for all errors. Any idea?   • Unbelievable: Cannot cast from class X to its super class

    I'm encountering a very weird problem with Spring (3.0.1.RELEASE), TestNG (5.11) and Maven Surefire (2.5). I have a test class that extends a Spring helper class for testNG so that test context can be loaded from an xml file (that contains some bean definitions). My project was imported into eclipse using m2eclipse (using Import Maven Project) The class run fine in Eclipse TestNG runner. However, it throws this exception with Maven Surefire Caused by: java.lang.ClassCastException: com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl cannot be cast to javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory at javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance(DocumentBuilderFactory.java:123) at org.springframework.beans.factory.xml.DefaultDocumentLoader.createDocumentBuilderFactory(DefaultDocumentLoader.java:89) at org.springframework.beans.factory.xml.DefaultDocumentLoader.loadDocument(DefaultDocumentLoader.java:70) at org.springframework.beans.factory.xml.XmlBeanDefinitionReader.doLoadBeanDefinitions(XmlBeanDefinitionReader.java:388) I have eliminated all involved dependencies in my pom so that the two classes com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl and javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory are coming from JRE only (the rt.jar).   • Weird Facebooker Plugin & Pushion Passenger ModRails Production Error

    I have an application (Rails 2.3.5) that I'm deploying to production Linux/Apache server using the latest Phushion Passenger/Apache Module 2.2.11 version. After deploying my original application, it returns a 500 error with no logging to production log. So I created a minimal test rails application, with some active record calls to the database to print out a list of objects to the home controller/my index page. I also cleared out all plugins. That works fine in the production environment. Then I one by one introduced each plugin that I'm using one at a time. Every plugin works fine EXCEPT facebooker. Every time I load the facebooker plugin into my app/vendor/plugins directory (via script git etc) my test application break (500 error - no error logging). Everytime I remove the facebooker plugin my test application works. Has anyone seen this before/ have any solutions? I saw this solution but didn't see it in the facebooker code.

    Hi, Want to create a directory on windows from a PHP script. My script is in www/Test directory of Apache and want to create a folder(fold1) inside www/downloads directory. Inside the script, using, $dirName = "../downloads/fold1"; mkdir("{$dirName}"); If we use the full path of dirName like C:\Apache\www\downloads\fold1, it works fine.   • mysql_connect() causes page to not display (WAMP)

    I currently have a website running MySQL and PHP in which this is all working. I've tried installing WAMPServer to be able to work on the site on my own computer, but I have been having issues trying to get the site to work correctly. HTML and PHP files work correctly (by going to http://localhost/index.php, etc.). But some of the pages display "This Webpage is not available" (in Chrome) or "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage", which leads me to think there is an error is the server, as when the page doesn't exist, it typically dispays "Oops! This link appears to be broken" or IE's standard 404 page. Each page in my site has an include() call to set up an instance of a class to handle all database transactions. This class opens the connection to the database in its constructor. I have found commenting out the contents of the constructor will allow the page to load, although this understandably causes errors later in the page. This is the contents of the included file: class dbAccess { private $db; function __construct() { $this->db = mysql_connect("externalURL","user","password") or die ("Connection for database not found."); mysql_select_db("dbName", $this->db) or die ("Database not selected"); } ... } As a note for what's happening here. I'm attempting to use the database on my site, rather than the local machine. The actual values of externalURL, dbName, user, and password work when I plug them into my database software and the file fine of the site, so I don't think the issue is with those values themselves, but rather some setting with Apache or Wamp. The issue persists if I try a local database as well. I've tried searching for solutions online, but haven't been able to find anything to help. If you need any further information to help solve this issue, feel free to ask for it. (One more note, I don't even have Skype on this computer, so I can't see it being an issue, as this conflict seems to be the default response for any Wamp issue.)     I saw that one of our tools uses a ConsoleAppender to System.err next to System.out in it's log4j configuration. Fragments of the configuration: <appender name="CONSOLE" class="org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender"> <!-- Log to STDOUT. --> <param name="Target" value="System.out"/> .... <appender name="CONSOLE_ERR" class="org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender"> <!-- Log to STDERR. --> <param name="Target" value="System.err"/> In Eclipse this results in double messages to the console, so I believe that is of no use, right? On the Linux server I see only one message to the PuTTY console, so where would that System.err message go to?
