  • How to store opening weekdays in a database

    I have a group of checkboxes where the user selects some of the weekdays (the opening days of a store). How can I save the selected days? Should I save something like 0111111 (zero means closed on sunday) on the same field and split the result when reading the data? Or create a field for each day and store 0 or 1 on each (weird)?

  • Adding interfaces that won't be actually used

    I currently have two interfaces(that I'll name here IA and IB): interface IA { int Width; int Height; ... } interface IB { int Width; int Height; ... } that share the same two properties: they both have a Width and a Height property. I was thinking if there is any point in defining an IMatrix interface containing a Width and Height properties: interface IMatrix { int Width; int Height; } The thing is that although they share both the same properties, I won't make use of polymorphism with IMatrix in any of my coding: i.e., there won't by any situation where I'll want to use an IMatrix, I'll just want to use IA and IB. Adding an IMatrix seems more like over-engineering than other thing, but I'd like to ask you guys what your opinion is on the matter. Thanks

    What is the optimal way to write the code which interacts with DB using linq2SQL? I need to add some business logic to the entities. So I guess there are two ways: Write some wrapper class. The main minus is that many fields are the same, so i don't feel it as DRY style. Add business logic methods to linq2sql entities(these classes are partial) directly ???

  • DDD and avoiding CRUD

    It seems that on most articles I read, CRUD is to be avoided in DDD as we are dealing with modeling business process and not data. However, I find it hard to see not to have CRUD operations on certain entities. For example, in a school grading system, before teachers can grade students, a SchoolYear has to be present or perhaps a GradingPeriod. I can't see how we can manage GradingPeriods without CRUD. Could someone enlighten me on this?

  • Having access to a private variable from other classes in Java

    If I want to create a form that adds people to a List, how do I have access to that List from another class? Where would I define that List so other classes can access the members, the size, etc? For example, if I have Class Foo that has the GUI for my form, along with buttons to add and remove people to the List, it would make sense to me to declare the List as a private instance variable of Class Foo. But then if I have another class, Class Bar, how does it get the values that are currently in that List to update some other graphical components? Or is that the wrong place to declare the List in general? Thanks.

  • CSS: Fixed background images taller than the browser viewport

    I've got a large photo (940x1210) as the background image for a #page div which wraps around all the content on a site. Since the photo is a headshot, it looks pretty silly tiled, so I've set it not to repeat, and positioned it at 0,0. When the content enclosed by #page is taller than 1210px and the background image is set to scroll, the photo scrolls out of view, but if it's fixed, only the part of the image displayed initially in the browser viewport shows up- either the top half (fixed top left) or bottom half (fixed bottom left). Here's the question: how can I fix the background image to the bottom of #page (or the body) while scrolling through the full height of the image until I get to the bottom?

Since I am not sure of when the class is being instantiated, or I can not change the method signature.     I came across an interview task/question that really got me thinking ... so here it goes: You have an array A[N] of N numbers. You have to compose an array Output[N] such that Output[i] will be equal to multiplication of all the elements of A[N] except A[i]. For example Output[0] will be multiplication of A[1] to A[N-1] and Output[1] will be multiplication of A[0] and from A[2] to A[N-1]. Solve it without division operator and in O(n). I really tried to come up with a solution but I always end up with a complexity of O(n^2). Perhaps the is anyone smarter than me who can tell me an algorithm that works in O(n) or at least give me a hint...

    I am a full time C++ developer, and I really like the language. I think it is suited for almost any kind of application. Some people claim Java and C# are better suited for high level programming, but I'm not so sure about this. I have worked with all three languages, and when using C++, it happens only now and then I come across something that might be improved. What features would you like to see added to C++? I'm talking about big improvements, not details like typesafe enums.

  • OOP beginner: classB extends classA. classA already object. method in classB needed.. etc.

    Hey guys, I'm learning myself to go from function based PHP coding to OOP. And this is the situation: ClassA holds many basic tool methods (functions). it's __construct makes a DB connection. ClassB holds specific methods based on a certain activity (extract widgets). ClassB extends ClassA because it uses some of the basic tools in there e.g. a database call. In a php file I create a $a_class = new ClassA object (thus a new DB connection). Now I need a method in ClassB. I do $b_class = new ClassB; and call a method, which uses a method from it's parent:: ClassA. In this example, i'm having ClassA 'used' twice. Onces as object, and onces via a parent:: call, so ClassA creates another DB connection (or not?). So what is the best setup for this basic classes parent, child (extend) situation? I only want to make one connection of course? I don't like to forward the object to ClassB like this $b_class = new ClassB($a_object); or is that the best way?     For example, you send an unsubscribe message to a legitimate company or a spam, they reply that they will remove you and it may take up to 72 hours to take effect. I find it hard to believe anything that simple could take more than 3/4 of a second to take effect system wide. Another example would be when you call the visa activation line, there is a "delay" of several minutes while they try to sell you some kind of insurance. Usually just as you get the point across that you don't want it they will tell you your card has been activated and let you go. Are these delays real?

  • CakePHP ACL use case(s)

    I have got a simple web app in development, i want to establish a couple of user groups; Admin, Doctors & Patients. Each group would have their access restricted to particular controller actions rather than individual content. So for example, Doctors can view patient records (index & view actions), but cannot delete them. Usually i would create a groups model, and assign the various users to a group. And filter in the beforeFilter() method to determine if the user has access. But if ACL can do the job, why right the code, right? Thanks

  • How to break up a table holding 100mil+ number of records?

    We're currently storing answers for 52 predefined questions for our clients in our matchmaking site. we have over 30million unique users summing up for worst case of a 52x30million rows. Of these 52 questions, 11 are required and always answered. Our previous solution was to open an answer table for each question. This solution distributed our answer rows for faster insert/delete/update. But it also caused us an unconventional programming such as dynamically opening a table each time a question is added/updated, or removing an answer table if it was to be destroyed permanently. We want to come up with a better solution for our third version but could't get very far yet. Any ideas to accomplish this in any other, perhaps a more conventional, way?

    Its said that property should not be "Set" only and it should be "Get" as well. What should i do if I need to set value to a variable from some other class? The will keep changing so I cannot pass it through constructor.
