• How to restrict paddle movement using Farseer Physics engine 3.2

  I am new to using Farseer Physics Engine 3.2(FPE), so please bear with my questions. Also, since FPE 3.2 is based on Box2D, I have been reading Box2D manual and pieces of code scattered in samples to better understand terminology and usage. Pong is usually my testbed whenever I try to do something new. Here is one of the issue I am running into: How can I restrict paddles to move only along Y axis, because the ball comes in and knocks off the paddles and everything floats in space afterwards ? (Box = Rectangle and ball = circle) I know MKS is the unit system, but is there a recommendation for sizes/position to be used ? I know this is a very generic question, but it would be good to know a simple set of values that one could use for making a game as simple as pong. Between box2d and FPE, I have some doubts: what is the recommended way of making a body in FPE ? world.CreateBody() does not exist in FPE Box2d manual recommends never to "new" body(since Box2D uses Small Object allocators), so is there a recommended way in Farseer to create a body (apart from factories) ? In box2d, it is recommended to keep a track of the body object, since it is also the parent to fixture(s). Why is it that in most of the examples, the fixture object is tracked ? Is there a reason why body is not tracked ? Thanks

• Windows Azure Database (SQL Azure) Development Tip

  When you create something in the cloud, it's real, and you're charged for it. There are free offerings, and you even get free resources with your Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscription, but there are limits within those. Creating a 1 GB database - even with nothing in it - is a 1 GB Database. If you create it, drop it, and create it again 2 minutes later, that's 2 GB of space you've used for the month. Wait - how do I develop in this kind of situation? With Windows Azure, you can simply install the free Software Development Kit (SDK) and develop your entire application for free - you need never even log in to Windows Azure to code. Once you're done, you simply deploy the app and you start making money from the application as you're paying for it. Windows Azure Databases (The Artist Formerly Known As SQL Azure) is a bit different. It's not emulated in the SDK - because it doesn't have to be. It's just SQL Server, with some differences in feature set. To develop in this environment, you can use SQL Server, any edition. Be aware of the feature differences, of course, but just develop away - even in the free "Express" or LocalDB flavors - and then right-click in SQL Server Management Studio to script objects. Script the database, but change the "Advanced" selection to the Engine Type of "SQL Azure". Bing. Although most all T-SQL ports directly, one thing to keep in mind is that you need a Clustered Index on every table. Often the Primary Key (PK) is a good choice for that.

• Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13

  I keep a windows partition on my laptop for the occaisional bit of Photoshop work. A while ago I noticed that Windows had disappeared from my grub boot menu and when I try to mount the windows partion, my system hangs for a bit and then I get this: Unable to mount 105 GB Filesystem Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to calculate free MFT records: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details. It seems that chkdsk is a windows command but since I can't boot into windows (since its the windows partition that is the problem) I'm not sure what to do.   Our company has grown quite quickly and I am facing new tasks which I did not think I'd need to deal with. Recently we've come ot a point where we have 100+ Devices (Routers, Bridges, Computers, Laptops, VOIP Phones etc). The other day I was quite frightened when I asked for an inventory and no one had one. I want to start tagging all equipment and recording serials to begin tracking our inventory and ensuring we have a proper record of what equipment we have. Does anyone have advice as to how to go about 1. Convincing the higher ups why we need to do this and 2. What software or strategies might work? Keep in mind this is not for furniture, office equipment etc but IT specific equipment. I'm concerned over people 1. Stealing the physical devices and 2. Losing track of configuration data etc in case we'd need to do a wipe and restore

• Rebuilding /etc/rc?.d/ links

  A regular filesystem check on a Debian Lenny system triggered an fsck, and that nuked a handful of links in the /etc/rc?.d hierarchy (unfortunately I didn't keep a list). The system seems to boot and run normally, but I'm worried its storing up trouble for the future. Is there an easy (fairly automatic) way of rebuilding this piece of the system ? As I understand it, the links are generally manipulated by package postinst scripts using update-rc.d (and I haven't made any changes from the installed defaults). Without any better ideas, my plan is one of: Diff a listing with another similar system to identify which packages need their links repairing. Wait until the system is upgraded to Squeeze (hopefully not too long :^) and assume the mass package upgrade will restore all the missing links.

• How can we make agile enjoyable for developers that like to personally, independently own large chunks from start to finish

  We’re roughly midway through our transition from waterfall to agile using scrum; we’ve changed from large teams in technology/discipline silos to smaller cross-functional teams. As expected, the change to agile doesn’t suit everyone. There are a handful of developers that are having a difficult time adjusting to agile. I really want to keep them engaged and challenged, and ultimately enjoying coming to work each day. These are smart, happy, motivated people that I respect on both a personal and a professional level. The basic issue is this: Some developers are primarily motivated by the joy of taking a piece of difficult work, thinking through a design, thinking through potential issues, then solving the problem piece by piece, with only minimal interaction with others, over an extended period of time. They generally complete work to a high level of quality and in a timely way; their work is maintainable and fits with the overall architecture. Transitioning to a cross-functional team that values interaction and shared responsibility for work, and delivery of working functionality within shorter intervals, the teams evolve such that the entire team knocks that difficult problem over. Many people find this to be a positive change; someone that loves to take a problem and own it independently from start to finish loses the opportunity for work like that. This is not an issue with people being open to change. Certainly we’ve seen a few people that don’t like change, but in the cases I’m concerned about, the individuals are good performers, genuinely open to change, they make an effort, they see how the rest of the team is changing and they want to fit in. It’s not a case of someone being difficult or obstructionist, or wanting to hoard the juiciest work. They just don’t find joy in work like they used to. I’m sure we can’t be the only place that hasn’t bumped up on this. How have others approached this? If you’re a developer that is motivated by personally owning a big chunk of work from end to end, and you’ve adjusted to a different way of working, what did it for you?

• How do I fix a corrupt .cab file?

  In Windows XP, I have a folder of install files- an .exe pointing to 3 Setup.cab files. As the install progresses, it hangs on Setup2.cab as it installs tutorial_page.chm (a Help file). I have 3 options when it hangs: Abort, Retry and Ignore. Both Abort and Ignore rollback the install and exit. But if I keep pressing Retry the install will progress & this action has successfully installed the program (eventually) for me. I AM WONDERING IF I CAN EXTRACTRE-PACKAGE THE .CAB? From the installed program can I grab the help.chm file and replace it into Setup2.cab for a successful install? I am aware of the Microsoft Cabinet Software Development Kit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310618 and How To Manually Modify and Rebuild CAB Files http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176810 but 1.)want to ask if this is even possible & 2.)don't know how to make a .DDF file for Makecab.exe

• How to recover Virtual Machines in Virtualbox?

  For some reason, all of a sudden, all virtual machines are gone from the User Interface in virtual box. I suspect CCleaner has something to do with it, but that's not the point. Both the virtual hardisks and the .xml files for the machines are still in their respective folders. How can I use them to get my virtual machines back into virtualbox? I tried simply creating a new machine from the old virtual hardisks, and it worked with the ubuntu guest, but not with the windows one. Plus, it'd be nice to get my old machines back instead of having to create new ones, that would keep me from having to fix some shortcuts as well as reconfigure shared folders and other stuff. • Crop and Capture screen software/plugin for windows7

  Do you know a software or a plugin for a browser that lets me capture what's on my screen and crop it by ratio. I have a photoshop but I don't want to keep opening it just to capture a simple image and then croping it and then saving it. I want to quickly select a portion on my screen save it. If it's possible it lets me crop by ratio (eg. 4:3). Most that I will capture are in my browser, I use either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. • Restoring the owners on debian system files

  Due to my inattention, tiredness (and probably stupidity) i've run chown -R someuser:someuser / and now all your base are belongs to us the files on the server belong to one user (lol). After system restart apache, bind9, mysql, and a dozen of other applications don't start and fill their log files with permission errors. I haven't done any backups on system files, only on the db and website files... Please suggest some ways to revive my web server. I have only 2 month experience with linux, so please keep it simple...

• Google Analytics checkout page tracking problem

  I am running a multilingual website, each lang on a different domain name. I am trying to lead all purchase requests to the checkout progress, which has its own domain too. In order to keep Google Analytics tracking I've updated the Google Analytics code accordingly. I set the source domain to 'multiple top-level domains'. Everything is going fine so far unless in E-commerce Overview; the "Sources / Medium" is always showing as (direct) - or the name of the source domain. Since I am redirecting using PHP header(location:.. etc.) the Google _link method doesn't seem to be working properly - I want to focus on two questions: Should I create a new profile for the checkout domain in Google Analytics? (I am now using the profile ID of the source domain even though I move to the checkout domain, si that OK?) When I'm trying to pass the cookies of the source domain to the checkout domain, I notice that the Google cookies are copied to the new domain (the cookie path is .checkout-domain/) and they have the same values of the original cookies - But for some reason another set of cookies is created once I access a page with google analytics code in the checkout pages, with different values (same path). Feels like I'm doing something wrong here, so my question is - What am I doing wrong here? Does anyone have an idea how to pass the cookies to the checkout domain?

• Reminders about unresponded emails?

  In my daily e-mail often happens the following scenario: I send somebody an email which describes some problem and requests an action from the recipient. Typically, I wish to ensure that this action was taken, or at least somehow resolved; when this happens, the email recipient should notify me with a response email about what was done, and what was not and why. But, sometimes emails don't get read by the recipient, or he forgets to reply to me. At the same time, I cannot constantly keep in memory the list of all emails for which I was waiting an answer and still didn't receive it. So I wonder, is there in any email client such a feature which would allow me to somehow mark specific outgoing emails as "demanding reply"? The mail client could in this case notify me if any "demanding reply" emails still aren't replied for a long time.

• Guide to the web development ecosystem

  I'm a long-time software developer, and I've been thrown in the deep, deep end of developing from the ground up what will hopefully be a highly scalable and interactive web application. I've been out of the web game for about 8 years, and even when I was last in it, I wasn't exactly on the cutting edge. I think I've made judicious design decisions and I'm quite happy with the progress I've been making so far, but new, hot web technologies keep crawling out of the woodwork and into my headspace, forcing me to continually revalidate my implementation decisions. Complicating things even further is the preponderance of out-of-date information and the difficulty of knowing what is out of date in the first place. What I'm wondering is, are there any comprehensive books or guides dedicated to compiling and comparing the technologies out there, end-to-end in the web application stack? I'm happy to learn new techs on demand, but I don't like learning about them after I've already spent time going in another direction. I'm looking for the sort of executive info a CTO might read to make sure the best architectural decisions are being made. And just to be clear, this is a question about resources, not about specific technology suggestions.

  I recently moved from Windows to a Mac, but I still have to keep Virtualbox and Windows installation on the machine to use Quicken. iBank looked promising, but I had problems importing my data from Quicken. I would switch to Mint if they would allow you to enter transactions manually, but the lack of that feature is a deal breaker. (I use Quicken primarily to track uncleared transactions, with the bonus of reporting on past spending.) Is there any other software I should try that will be able to import at least most of my old data from Quicken? Edit: For what it's worth, I never did find anything else. Quicken Essentials for Mac was released this year, but doesn't handle investments well from what I hear. I'm now on Quicken 2010 under XP running inside Virtualbox. It's not ideal, but it seems to be the only thing around right now that meets my needs.

• ODI 12c - Getting up and running fast

  Here's a quick A-B-C to show you how to quickly get up and running with ODI 12c, from getting the software to creating a repository via wizard or the command line, then installing an agent for running load plans and the like. A. Get the software from OTN and install studio. Check out this viewlet here for quickly doing this. B. Create a repository using the RCU, check out this viewlet here which uses the FMW Repository Creation Utility.  You can also silently create (and drop) a repository using the command line, this is really easy. .\rcu -silent -createRepository -connectString yourhost:1521:orcl.st-users.us.oracle.com -dbUser sys -dbRole sysdba -useSamePasswordForAllSchemaUsers true -schemaPrefix X -component ODI -component IAU  -component IAU_APPEND  -component IAU_VIEWER -component OPSS < passwords.txt where the passwords file contains info such as; sysdba_passwd newschema_passwd odi_user_passwd D workreposname workrepos_passwd  You can find details about the silent use of RCU here in the FMW documentation. C. Quickly create an agent for executing load plans and the like -  there is a great OBE for this, check it out here. • Trouble with NFS file sharing on Synology 211 NAS and Ubuntu Client

  I'm attempting to set up NFS file sharing and keep getting the error... mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.1.110:/myshared Here is the exact command I'm using to mount sudo mount -o nolock 192.168.1.110:/myshared /home/emiller/MyShared I have set 'Enabled NFS' in DSM and set nfs priviledges in the the Shares section of the control panel. Here is the /etc/exports entry from the NAS. volume1/myshared 192.168.1.*(rw,sync,no_wdelay,no_root_squash,insecure_locks,anonuid=0,anongid=0) I read some things about the hosts.allow and hosts.deny but it seems like if they are empty they aren't used for anything. I can see the share when I run ... showmount -e 192.168.1.110 Any help would be appreciated in this matter.

• Which mail clients can give reminders about unresponded emails?

  In my daily e-mail often happens the following scenario: I send somebody an email which describes some problem and requests an action from the recipient. Typically, I wish to ensure that this action was taken, or at least somehow resolved; when this happens, the email recipient should notify me with a response email about what was done, and what was not and why. But, sometimes emails don't get read by the recipient, or he forgets to reply to me. At the same time, I cannot constantly keep in memory the list of all emails for which I was waiting an answer and still didn't receive it. So I wonder, is there in any email client such a feature which would allow me to somehow mark specific outgoing emails as "demanding reply"? The mail client could in this case notify me if any "demanding reply" emails still aren't replied for a long time.

• ssh-agent key timeout with screen or tmux on bastion host

  Normally I have ssh-agent running, I ssh to my bastion host then open a tmux session and connect to other boxes through that. Key forwarding works for any sessions that I open from that point forward. If I resume my tmux session after closing terminal, sleeping my laptop, whatever, my key forwarding on my bastion sessions still work, as does forwarding on any new sessions. Existing ones don't work, though. I have a little thing in my bashrc that keeps key forwarding working when I resume tmux, but I am having trouble figuring out how to get it to keep working for sessions open within tmux. For example, I have bastion01, dbhost01, dbhost02, webhost01, and webhost02. If I open a connection to bastion01, start tmux there, and then connect to dbhost01 and webhost01 forwarding works. If I close that connection, reconnect and attach my existing tmux session, then add connections to dbhost02 and webhost02, key forwarding works on the 02 boxes, but does not on the 01. Please help!

This subject took me in past – my past. There were various things, I had done or proposed when I started very first month as a DBA trainee. I was tagged along with very senior DBA in my organization who always protected me or correct my mistake. He was great guy and totally understand the young mind of over-enthusiastic Trainee DBA. I respect him very much. Here are few things which I had learned in my very first month (not necessarily I have practices them on production). Never compress (zip) native backup using any tools, when disaster happen sometime the extra time to un-compress the database can be too long and not acceptable for business SLA Do not truncate logs After restoring full database backup – only restore latest differential back, no need to restore all the backup Always write WHERE condition when deleting and updating Sr. DBA always advised me – always keep your résumé ready and car ready – you never know when you can not recover disaster! • Who would be the most efficacious Patron Saint of Programmers? [closed]

  The purpose of this question is to find someone out there to intercede for us and help our coding (not to magically align the bytes), to inspire our daily grind of software development by their lives of heroic virtue, to unite us under a common patron and to keep us on the straight and narrow path (i.e. don't be evil). In days of yore, the professional guilds had a patron saint. Regardless of whether we have a higher tendency to be atheists or not, who would you choose as the patron saint of programmers and what would be your criteria? Some people have chosen St. Isidore of Seville, but he's more like the patron saint of Wikipedia. If you're not Catholic please don't hesitate to nominate someone, just say what your criteria is. At the very least they should be dead and have lived a life of heroic virtue - or have died trying. It's a very pragmatic and noble custom which I heartily encourage. But if you find the practice off-putting, please don't be offended. I only mean to ask this question to other like minded programmers, which I have reason to believe exist. If you add a picture and a maybe make up a prayer that'd be excellent. It doesn't have to be gilded, illuminated and rhyme, although that would be sweet.

• change default port of IIS and let another process to listen on port 80 (Windows Server 2008)

  I have an installation of Windows Server 2008 running IIS 6 with a website listening on port 8080, even though I have moved the website to listen on 8080, port 80 is still kept in use by IIS (for truth by the kernel process : System - ProcId : 4). I want to let another process listen on port 80 without uninstalling or disabling IIS, I want to keep IIS listening on port 8080 and another service on port 80, is there a way to do it? I saw another similar thread here on serverfault but the solution (using httpcfg.exe delete iplisten -i 0.0.0.0:80 ) can work only in 2003 because in 2008 the utility httpcfg.exe doesn't exist and it seems that it cannot be installed ... Does anyone have a solution to get rid of the kernel listening on port 80 in Windows Server 2008 with IIS running?

• Ubuntu 12.10 + Windows 7 - No option to install alongside windows 7

  I have a 64-bit Windows 7 OS installed at the moment. I have used GPartEd to shrink the current Windows 7 partition on my 720GB HDD to 200GB. I have then made a new NTFS partition of 200GB which I will keep for later on as a shared drive between both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. So in GPartEd I now have 3 partitions which were all automatically there from the Windows 7 installation, I only shrank the 3rd one from the 698GB or so that it was to 200GB and created the 200GB for the shared drive. I first tried creating another 200GB partition at this stage to install Ubuntu too but when I burnt the DVD and loaded it, Ubuntu gave me no option to install alongside Windows, only the option to erase the entire disk and install Ubuntu on the blank drive...not what I want to do. So I tried installing it through clicking 'Something else', it downloaded all the install files but didn't install. I then had a lot of problems with getting the DVD drive to work and what not but now have this fixed so I can use Windows again. So now I've used GPartEd to delete the partitions so again I'm now left with the 3 partitions there which Windows 7 automatically installs and a 200GB NTFS partition I will later use as a shared drive. Booting up from the Ubuntu disc and again there is no option to install alongside Windows 7. How do I get it to do so? All I would like is Windows 7 and Ubuntu on a dual boot, with a 200GB NTFS partition to dump my work onto so that I can access it from both OS's. Thanks.
