• Flash Player is creating thousands of .tmp files

  We have seen a number of machines in our environment (XP Pro SP3) that have been running out of disk space because of .TMP files in the windows\temp folder. One machine had 6GB of .TMP files on it starting from around August 2010. The files are all 305kb in size and they seem to get created every 10 minutes. The files appear to be either .EXEs or .DLLs when opened in a hex editor. The words "this program can not be run in DOS mode" are at the beginning of the file and the words "Adobe Flash Player" are scattered all over the end of the file (probably the string table). While it's easy enough to clean them up, I'd like to find root cause for the issue. Has anybody else seen this?

• Windows XP Log In: Can't do it. Logon Message popup.

  A friend recommended this site to me. Hope you can help! I can't seem to log into Windows. I boot my computer. The log In screen appears. I put in my user name and password, hit OK, and the following message pops up: "The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain name are correct, then type your password again. Letters in your passwords must be typed using the correct case". NOTE: I have tried Safe Mode and the same message pops up. Just to be clear, I am not able to get into Windows (I'm stressing this b/c I've come across some suggestions that require you to be in Windows, which doesn't help in my case). • Hyper-V with a single host NIC

  I'm trying to create a simple Hyper-V test machine, and am having more problems than expected with the basic networking. All other hypervisors I've used (vmware server, vmware player, virtualbox) allow me to use the default single NIC in my machine, and then create guests with "bridged" mode so they appear like a normal machine on the network. With the Hyper-V server, when I create a Virtual Switch and set it to "external", I lose all network access from the host. The solutions I've seen online seem to rely on complex configurations requiring multiple vSwitches and RRAS on the host to get it going. Is it really that complex to get a simple, single-NIC Hyper-V server going, in such a way that I can still use the host? The host is Windows 8.

But on executing this command it get the error C:\Users\user>netsh wlan refresh hostednetwork rambo123 Invalid value "rambo123" for command option "data". Usage: refresh hostednetwork [data=]key I have no idea what is wrong with this command.

• Why my USB mouse get suspended after 3 seconds of inactivity?

  Mouse's bottom LED goes off after 3 seconds after connection and cursor movements and wheel stops. Pressing any button, reconnecting or resetting USB device resumes it for another 3 seconds (when resumed by pressing button, this event does no go to X). This happens when using any of USB ports. This mouse works well with other computer with Linux. It was working well before. Why can it happen? How to fix it? Update: It happens only if laptop is on battery. Answer: this is caused by powersaving done by laptop-mode-tools. To temporary turn off powersaving one can use for i in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/control; do echo on > $i; done

• Can I Store MediaWiki Files on the cloud?

  I recently got a chromebook, and I've been brainstorming different ways to put mediawiki on it (with localhost, not a server). One way I've read about online is to go into developer mode to download and set up LAMP. I was wondering, wouldn't I be able to store the apache, mysql, php, and mediawiki files on the cloud (google drive)? And if so, would anything prevent me from accessing my wiki on any other computer's localhost, assuming I could just log into Google Drive to access these files? Might there be any reduced performance when operating from the cloud?

  I have a vmware VPS running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise that has performance issues with MySQL. Every few minutes, MySQL stall for few seconds then responed to queries. I'm sure that my.ini need to be optimized, but unfortunately, I don't have any idea of my.ini configuration. • SSH tunnel doesn't work

  I am trying to use my server as a "proxy" with ssh. However, setting up tunneling with ssh -D localhost:8000 user@myserver does not work. I tested this on various machines with ssh and putty - It connects just fine, but when I set my browser settings accordingly, I just get an error "Connection has been reset". I tried monitoring the traffic with wireshark, but I didn't even see some tunnel-traffic. I explicitly set AllowTcpForwarding to "yes" but I still can't use the tunnel. When running ssh in verbose mode, I don't get any errors but debug1: Connection to port 8000 forwarding to socks port 0 requested. debug1: channel 3: new [dynamic-tcpip] debug1: channel 3: free: dynamic-tcpip, nchannels 4 What am I doing wrong?

• Windows/global setting to allow only SSL when on public Wifi?

  Rather than going through each of my apps and modifying settings, or tweaking individual browser settings (I use three different browsers) or just being careful not to type non-SSL URLs into the web address bar, is there a solution at the Windows level that will prevent anything from connecting to the web from my laptop unless it's using SSL? I also have mini apps installed like Gmail checker, etc that connect to the web of their own volition using my usernames, passwords and such, so it goes beyond just web browsers. The reason I'm asking is I want to work securely on the general Internet when on public Wifi (e.g. coffee shops) without a lot of hassle or having to remember everything that needs to be locked down. When I'm back home I want to go back to full access mode using any kind of protocol on the web. If a website doesn't support SSL when I'm out in public then I just don't surf it - that's not a worry to me.

• How to prevent Excel rounding numbers or adding redundant 0's?

  I have a column of numbers that appear like this: but the actual value of the shown cell is 20130.153334 Other values have a different number of decimal places. I don't want to add redundant 0's, so I can't just specify a particular number of decimal places to display. I really just want to treat the values as text. I have already changed the format of the cell to Text, as the description for Text is: "Text format cells are treated as text even when a number is in the cell. The cell is displayed exactly as entered.". However, it clearly isn't being displayed exactly as entered! Strangely, if I hit F2 on the cell to go into edit mode, then hit enter, it is then displayed correctly. I can't do this manually for 2000+ records though! How can I prevent the numbers being rounded?

• Windows XP - Website unaccessible on single pc in LAN

  For serveral days now, a website isn't accessible on a single pc in the LAN. On the other pc's, it works just fine. And it's just a single website that's not accessible as far as I know of. The website generates a timeout on every single web browser I've tried (IE8, Firefox and Chrome). However, traceroute, nmap and telnet all work just fine. I've even tried multiple user accounts and safe mode, but that didn't work either. As a side note: using a linux live cd did work and I could access the website without any problems. The hosts file is the windows default, the ip- and dns settings on the network adapter normal as well. No strange processes are running and no viruses found. According to tcpview and netstat there are connections to the domain, but every request in the browser results in a timeout.. Any idea what's happening?

But after update can't enable 3d monitor, only 2 could be enabled at the same time. Did current things before write question here: Remove all drivers, reboots, re-installs Different cable input's and orders of enabling Tried to enable each monitor from Catalyst and Windows Screen Resolution Spec's: Windows 8.1 Pro XFX HD7970 3 of LG E2442 Cables: 2 DVI 1 HDMI Googled for many time and found one of possible solution is to buy ACTIVE mini DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI, but maybe there are some another more simple solutions?

  This question already has an answer here: Can I sleep one of the displays on a dual-monitor setup (running Windows 7)? 4 answers I want to be able to 'put the display to sleep' on one of my two monitors when it isn't needed, so it doesn't distract me or use unnecessary power. Ideally, the display would be asleep, but the OS would remain in dual-monitor mode, so I could still have a variety of windows open in the sleeping monitor's display space, which would mean I wouldn't have to keep switching between single- and dual-monitor modes. Its the same as "Can I sleep one of the displays on a dual-monitor setup (running Windows 7)?" I just wasn't sure I could comment on such an old thread. None of the answers there provided a perfect solution and I was wondering if there is now a solution available.

• Can't delete file from windows 7

  I downloaded a torrent file from internet. The problem is it's size is showing 0 bytes. I tried to scan it with antivirus, upload it to virus total, delete it but it's showing the file is not found. I tried to delete it in safe mode also but no success. Can anybody explain me, what can be reason for this and what is the way to delete this file? Thanks in advance. My operating system is windows 7. EDIT : the name of the file is "[Torrentreactor.to] - Site Translator 4.06.torrent."

• Nvidia driver on Windows 7 causing black screen

  I have just installed Windows 7 on a desktop machine and for the first time ever have had a really tough time doing so, its normally a nice smooth install. This time I found that the monitor would simply go black after completing the installation. I tried reinstalling about 3 times and this did not help. After much searching I discovered that it was the nvidia drivers that were playing up with win 7, so i booted into safe mode, disabled the device, then rebooted to complete the installation. Windows 7 now works fine as long as the nvidia 9600 gt video card is disabled. The moment I enable it, the system requires a reboot and the screen will go black before even getting to the log in screen. I have tried downloading the latest driver and installing it manually, I have also tried uninstalling the device and allowing windows 7 to install it itself. Nothing seems to work. any clues?

• OS won't boot during vs2010 install on vista 64

  I am installing vs2010 on a vista 64bit machine. During the install it asked for a restart. Since that, vista won't load. I tried restore to previous good config - didn't help. I am only able to boot it using safe mode with networking. When I did that, it continued the vista part of the install (the screen with the 3 out of 3 updates) but after that when I restarted again - still fails. HELP!!!

• Why are my favorite websites becoming slower, over months?

  I spend a lot of my time at sites for watching online videos: youtube, gorillavid, thedailyshow.com etc. I used to watch the videos in full screen mode, and then that became very laggy. So, I started watching them with full-browser zooming. Then that became laggy. Recently, I've had to actually zoom out; otherwise, the video will lag so much that my PC locks. Could this be a symptom of my processor, RAM, or motherboard going bad? Has it, perhaps, anything to do with softwares like Chrome or the playeres the sites are using being updated?

• Vista Startup - Cannot Find the File Specified

  Yesterday I restarted my laptop because my Wi-Fi catcher wasn't working correctly, and when the computer reached the login screen, instead of showing my user account it said "Cannot find the file specified". I rebooted and ran the Startup Repair and Memory Diagnostics but nothing showed up. I also took the battery out for a minute and tried again but still no luck. The weird thing is that I cannot even boot into safe mode, it still shows the same error. I don't remember downloading or opening anything suspicious recently, and I have 3 different cleaners/anti-malware programs as well that I usually run about once a week. I did go into the registry recently but I didn't modify or delete anything as I was only checking to see if I had a certain key in it. I have a Dell laptop running Vista Home Basic SP2. If I have to I can reinstall the OS with the CD or even take it to Best Buy but I'd rather try and fix it first. Thanks.

• Can't boot into my Windows 7 64-bit Acer laptop

  Boot normally -- it hangs on "Starting Windows" animation forever. Boot safe mode -- it bluescreens. Boot with a recovery CD (or try Repair Installation directly without a CD) -- it hangs on the green loading bar forever. I dual-boot Ubuntu and can get into the Ubuntu partition fine so I don't think anything is necessarily wrong with the harddrive, but the Ubuntu partition is tiny and I rarely use it and can't access my Windows files anyway. Is there anything I can try that'll help repair whatever happened? I just want to run a checkdisk utility or something similar that'll repair whatever got botched.   Does Vim have a command equivalent to Emacs' Ctrl-I? Emacs has an extremely useful shortcut "C-I" which fixes indentation of the current line (or selected lines.) For example, suppose you write this tiny code on Emacs: def foo print "boo" end and you are selecting the whole 3 lines. You press "C-I" then the code becomes def foo print "boo" end I can use this in quiet mode i.e. ignoring. Emacs as well. Does anyone know how to do this on Vim?

• Windows 7 hangs after longer inactivity of user

  I have serveral PCs running Windows 7 in different falvors (32- / 64-bit / Professional / Ultimate / ATI / Nvidia) - they all have one problem in common... ...if I don't work on any of them for a longer time and the screen goes off as it should be (all default settings!) they sometimes go into some kind of sleep mode where I get to see the desktop or whatever I did before leaving after moving the mouse or pressing a key - but nothing reacts for a different amount of time from serveral seconds to serveral minutes! Any hint that helps solving this anoying problem would be very welcome ;-)

• Portable VirtualBox with Ubuntu on two machines

  I have VirtualBox Portable installed from vbox.me. I moved it on a USB drive and added a virtual Ubuntu. It works fine on the computer I created it, but moving the usb drive to a different the Ubuntu does not start any more. I already changed location descriptions in <machine>.vbox and the VirtualBox.xml. When pressing Shift while starting the GRUB loader comes up, so I tried the recovery mode. Same here – startup freezes and nothing happens. Any hints for me? • Windows Server 2003 R2 SIS Groveler start error

  Hi I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 running and I need to have a WDS with mixed mode so I can deploy Windows 7 & Windows XP images. I went to setup the first image and after the wizard was done copying the correct files I got: Single Instance Storage Groveler: Service did not start (or something like that). I checked event viewer and got this: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7023 Date: 3/26/2012 Time: 7:03:21 PM User: N/A Computer: SERVER2 Description: The Single Instance Storage Groveler service terminated with the following error: The service has not been started. This server is needed very soon because we just got a shipment of several Windows XP capable laptops and need to deploy Windows XP over PXE and this is keeping us from proceeding.
