• Attachment handling for web application with Jackrabbit

  I need to manage attachments on my Spring web application and I thought to use an open source repository. My app it's a job approval system using J2EE / SPRING 3 Framework and Postgress DB to allow user to tracks the job,right through every step of the approval process. It is a fully managed, collaborative system that operates from a central server and is accessed by a standard internet browser. An user should be able to add an attach to a request or an approval step, so, I though to use Jackrabbit with Postgres database persistence manager. I took a look to this post: http://onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2006/10/04/what-is-java-content-repository.html?page=1 It's really interesting but, I've some question about this kind of solution :- I seen that Jackrabbit standalone as a Derby database embedded solution for persistence, is it enough for a professional use of the repository with more than 50 request / days (with attachment) ? Is there a reason for which I should use another database manager for persistence instead of the default one ?

• Unable to connect to network

  Hey guys, I have a question. I have been having problems connecting a new netbook to my network at home. I have an Asus Eeepc 100HAB. I have tried to run a repair on the connection, uninstalled and re-installed the network card, made sure all of the drivers are up-to-date as well. Two caveats: I have a laptop that I recently switched to a wired connection because it wasn't connecting to the network as well, and the netbook connects to an unsecured network i found just fine, only having a problem getting into my home network. Passwords are correct, and the computer where the connection originates from is working fine as well. Any ideas?

• Relationship between Repository and Unit of Work

  I am going to implement a repository, and I would like to use the UOW pattern since the consumer of the repository could do several operations, and I want to commit them at once. After read several articles about the matter, I still don't get how to relate this two elements, depending on the article it is being done in a way u other. Sometimes the UOW is something internal to the repository: public class Repository { UnitOfWork _uow; public Repository() { _uow = IoC.Get<UnitOfWork>(); } public void Save(Entity e) { _uow.Track(e); } public void SubmittChanges() { SaveInStorage(_uow.GetChanges()); } } And sometimes it is external: public class Repository { public void Save(Entity e, UnitOfWork uow) { uow.Track(e); } public void SubmittChanges(UnitOfWork uow) { SaveInStorage(uow.GetChanges()); } } Other times, is the UOW whom references the Repository public class UnitOfWork { Repository _repository; public UnitOfWork(Repository repository) { _repository = repository; } public void Save(Entity e) { this.Track(e); } public void SubmittChanges() { _repository.Save(this.GetChanges()); } } How are these two elements related? UOW tracks the elements that needs be changed, and repository contains the logic to persist those changes, but... who call who? Does the last make more sense? Also, who manages the connection? If several operations have to be done in the repository, I think using the same connection and even transaction is more sound, so maybe put the connection object inside the UOW and this one inside the repository makes sense as well. • Leveraging .Net 4.0 Framework Tools For Encrypting Web Configuration Sections

  I would like to share a few points with regards to encrypting web configuration sections in .Net 4.0. This information is also applicable to .Net 3.5 and 2.0. Two methods can work perfectly for encrypting connection strings in a Web project configuration file:   1-Do It All Yourself! In this approach, helper functions for encrypting/decrypting configuration file content are implemented. Program would explicitly retrieve appropriate content from configuration file then decrypt it appropriately.  Disadvantages of this implementation would be the added overhead for maintaining the encryption/decryption code as well the burden of always ensuring sections are appropriately decrypted before use and encrypted appropriately whenever edited.   2- Leverage the .Net 4.0 Framework (The Way to go!) Fortunately, all needed tools for protecting configuration files are built-in to the .Net 2.0/3.5/4.0 versions with very little setup needed. To encrypt connection strings, one can use the ASP.Net IIS Registration Tool (Aspnet_regiis.exe). Note that a 64-bit version of the tool also exists under the Framework64 folder for 64-bit systems. The command we need to encrypt our web.config file connection strings is simply the following:   Aspnet_regiis –pe “connectionstrings” –app “/sampleApplication” –prov “RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider”   To later decrypt this configuration section:   Aspnet_regiis –pd “connectionstrings” –app “/SampleApplication”   The following is a brief description of the command line options used in the example above. Aspnet_regiis supports many more options which you can read about in the links provided for reference below.   Option Description -pe  Section name to encrypt -pd  Section name to decrypt -app  Web application name -prov  Encryption/Decryption provider   ASP.Net automatically decrypts the content of the Web.Config file at runtime so no programming changes are needed.   Another tool, aspnet_setreg.exe is to be used if certain configuration file sections pertinent to the .Net runtime are to be encrypted. • Game Code Design for Rendering

  I first created a game on the iPhone and I'm now porting it to Android. I wrote most of the code in C++, but when it came to porting it wasn't so easy. The Android way is to have two threads, one for rendering and one for updating. This due to some devices blocking when updating the hardware. My problem is that I am coming from the iPhone. When I transition, say from the Menu to the Game, I would stop the Animation (Rendering) and load up the next Manager (the Menu has a Manager and so has the Game). I could implement the same thing on Android, but I have noticed on game ports like Quake, don't do this - as far as I can tell. I have learnt that I cannot just dynamically add another Renderer class the the tree because I will probably get a dequeuing buffer error - which I believe to be a problem with the OpenGL ES side. So how is it done?

• Skipping intermediate Ubuntu OS upgrade to latest one,How do I upgrade from 9.04 to 10.04.2?

  I'm currently runing Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. I want to upgrade to 10.04.02, but whenever I use the Update manager to do this, it fails with the error "An upgrade from 'jaunty' to 'lucid' is not supported with this tool". I also tried to run sudo do-release-upgrade -d, but it fails with the same error message: Checking for a new ubuntu release Done Upgrade tool signature Done Upgrade tool Done downloading extracting 'lucid.tar.gz' authenticate 'lucid.tar.gz' against 'lucid.tar.gz.gpg' tar: Removing leading `/' from member names Reading cache Checking package manager Can not upgrade An upgrade from 'jaunty' to 'lucid' is not supported with this tool.

• Distinguishing the Transport Layer from the Session Layer

  In the OSI communications model, the Session layer manages the creation and removal of the association between two communicating network end points. This can also be called a connection. A connection is maintained while the network end points are communicated between each other in a conversation or session of some unknown length of time. Some connections and sessions only need to last long enough to send a message or a piece of data in one direction. In addition, some sessions may last longer, this typically occurs when one or both of the network end points are  able to terminate it the connection. The transport layer ensures that messages/data are delivered without errors, in sequence, and with no data content losses or data content duplications. It relieves the Session Layer from any concern with the transfer of data between them and their peers. Examples: Session Layer This layer acts like a manager and asks one of its employees (Transport Layer) to move a piece of data/message from one network end-point to another. Transportation Layer This layer takes the request of the Session Layer and moves the data as insturcted, it also double checks the data for any missing or corrupted information after it has been moved. If for some reason the new data does not match the old data then the Transport player will attempt to move the data gain until the data at both locations is in sync.

• Application qos involving priority and bandwidth

  Our manager wants us to do applicaiton qos which is quite different from the well-known system qos. We have many services of three types, they have priorites, the manager wants to suspend low priority services requests when there are not enough bandwidth for high priority services. But if the high priority services requests decrease, the bandwidth for low priority services should increase and low priority service requests are allowed again. There should be an algorithm involving priority and bandwidth. I don't know how to design the algorithm, is there any example on the internet? Somebody can give suggestion? Thanks. UPDATE All these services are within a same process. We are setting the maximum bandwidth for the three types of services via ports of services via TC (TC is the linux qos tool whose name means traffic control).

• Vendors: Partners or Salespeople?

  I got a great e-mail from a friend that asked about how he could foster a better relationship with his vendors. So many times when you work with a vendor it’s more of a used-car sales experience than a partnership – but you can actually make your vendor more of a partner, as long as you both set some ground-rules at the start. Sit down with your vendor, and have a heart-to-heart talk with them, explain that they won’t win every time, but that you’re willing to work with them in an honest way on both sides. Here’s the advice I sent him verbatim. I hope this post generates lots of comments from both customers and vendors. I don’t expect that you’ve had a great experience with your Microsoft reps, but I happen to work with some of the best sales teams in the business, and our clients tell us that all the time. “The key to this relationship is to keep the audience really small. Ideally there should be one person from your side that is responsible for the relationship, and one from the vendor’s side. Each responsible person should have the authority to make decisions, and to bring in other folks as needed for a given topic, project or decision.   For Microsoft, this is called an “Account Manager” – they aren’t technical, they aren’t sales. They “own” a relationship with a company. They learn what the company does, who does it, and how. They are responsible to understand what the challenges in your company are. While they don’t know the bits and bytes of everything we sell, they know what each thing does, and who to talk to about it. I get a call from an Account Manager every week that has pre-digested an issue at an organization and says to me: “I need you to set up an architectural meeting with their technical staff to get a better read on how we can help with problem X.” I do that and then report back to the Account Manager what we learned.  All through this process there’s the atmosphere of a “team”, not a “sales opportunity” per se. I’ve even recommended that the firm use a rival product, and I’ve never gotten push-back on that decision from my Account Managers.   But that brings up an interesting point. Someone pays an Account Manager and pays me. They expect something in return. At some point, you have to buy something. Not every time, not every situation – sometimes it’s just helping you with what you already bought from us. But the point is that you can’t expect lots of love and never spend any money. That’s the way business works.   Finally, don’t view the vendor as someone with their hand in your pocket – somebody that’s just trying to sell you something and doesn’t care if they ever see you again – unless they deserve it. There are plenty of “love them and leave them” companies out there, and you may have even had this experience with us, but that isn’t the case in the firms I work with. In fact, my customers get a questionnaire that asks them that exact question. “How many times have you seen your account team? Did you like your interaction with them? Can they do better?” My raises, performance reviews and general standing in my group are based on the answers the company gives.  Ask your vendor if they measure their sales and support teams this way – if not, seek another vendor to partner with.   Partnering with someone is a big deal. It involves time and effort on your part, and on the vendor’s part. If either of you isn’t pulling your weight, it just won’t work. • configuring USB modem( Huawei EC156) in ubuntu 13.10

  I am facing difficulty in installing my USB modem in Ubuntu 13.10. Contrary to what many have suggested,it does not get detected automatically, nor does setting a new connection help. USB Device is listed in lsusb, but not under network manager or Devices, it is detected as a CD-ROM, what I understood from the web was that usb-modeswitch can be used to switch it to a USB device. Even 'Enable Mobile Broadband' option is not shown in network manager. What was interesting is when I start laptop with windows 7 and use the USB modem and after that restart with Ubuntu, both Enable Broadband and the mobile broadband connection can be seen. Sadly, internet connection could not be installed. I tried using USB-modeswitch command as suggested somewhere, but it does not seem to work. Following is the message. My sqlserver is running on port:1433 I am using port forwarding , I can access service of other ports, My Connetion String Is: Data Source=190.190.200.100,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;User ID=myUsername;Password=myPassword; But it gives following error when i am trying to connect sql server through internet: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)

• Cannot access personal website from home IP. More details inside.

  This is a recent problem I've been having. My site can be accessed from almost everywhere else except from my home IP, where I do most of my editing/updating, etc. I've tested my connection from my school's network, a friend's connection from out of state (multiple states), and through a tethered connection with my friend's Android. It works in all those cases, both viewing, accessing the cPanel, and using FTP. Here's the problem that happens to me when I try to view it from my home IP: The page times out in Firefox, IE, and Chrome. Using the cmd, I ran tracert and ping, both as failed attempts. Log here. downforeveryoneorjustme.com says my site is up. So do the other site checkers. I can't access my cPanel or FTP accounts. I can't access the host site. (I use perfectz.info for hosting, and I can't access their site either.) System settings: No firewall enabled. Ports are seemingly properly forwarded. (e.g. The ports are open in the router settings, and are open everywhere else.) I have an email forwarder set up from the cPanel that works just fine. (i.e. I can receive emails sent to that address. If any other information is needed, I'll do my best to provide it. UPDATE @ilhan: I use two things: 1) The site cPanel from in-browser. 2) Dreamweaver CS5 FTP. @Matthias: I tested both, and it passes the dual stack with a 10/10. What should I do then?

• How do you manage feature requests and software changes?

  I am a Software Engineer and over the past few years I have become the de-facto software project manager simply because there isn't one. So to keep our sanity in the R&D/Engineering department, customers have become accustomed to coming to me with their requests. I have no experience in this realm so it is my first time acting as a project manager for software projects. I have managed other things but not software. So, how do you manage software projects and mark priorities? Requests come in at infrequent intervals so we very well could be working on something for someone else and then another person comes in with a "rush" job that needs working on. Is it easier to just say First Come, First Serve or is it the person with the most money?

• Terminal as desktop background instead of wallper

  I have come to conclusion that all my needs from nautilus is satisfied with terminal and last file manager. It also dismisses the need for multiple nautilus instances, which makes mess when I forgot how I meant to use different workspaces. The next step for my simplification would be to get rid of any possibility to open nautilus. Also I thought that my interaction with computer is file centred, therefore it makes sense to leave file manager in background of applications. Are there any ways to make terminal as desktop background with which I could interact?

• Unexpected network traffic?

  My internet connection is via a fixed wireless connection using a 900MHz Motorola Canopy module. The router reports a fairly consistent 32-64Kbps of incoming traffic on the WAN port. When I attached a PC directly to the port and run Wireshark, I get a dump showing a lot of chatter from other machines that I presume are connected to the same tower. This didn't include end-to-end traffic, but was there were a lot of ARP requests, SSDP traffic, ICMP and other network discovery type stuff. Is this 'normal' or does it suggest a misconfiguration somewhere? As far as I can tell there is no need for my modem to be receiving any of this traffic (other than wanting to know what the names of my neighbours machines and printers are!) Since the internet connection is slow at the best of time, having this amount of background noise seems very wasteful.

• Broken BURG install after backup/restore

  Long story short: BURG is stuck in text mode and I can't seem to get it back to the eye-candy. I have purged and then re-installed to no avail. I am running 12.04. The long story: I originally installed onto 12.04 using Super-boot-manager (BURG-manager) and then stopped using it in favour of GRUB because I had too many entries. I then had to backup and restore Ubuntu (partition was deleted and re-created) due to unrelated issues. I re-installed GRUB2 and booted into Ubuntu to re-install BURG, but after re-booting it appears to be stuck in text mode (looks exactly like GRUB 1). Any ideas? I know I'm not supposed to be using it on 12.04 (I think) but it worked before, so what's up?

• Banshee crashes consistently - is there a fix?

  Since updating to ubuntu 11.10 I've had trouble with banshee. In particular when I run it I find that it crashes within an hour without fail. • A command-line clipboard copy and paste utility?

  In Windows I used command-line clipboard copy-and-paste utilities... pclip.exe and gclip.exe These were UnixUtils ports for Windows (but they only handled plain text). There were a couple of other native Windows utils which could write/extracy any format. I've looked for something similar in Synaptic Package Manager, but I can't find anything. Is there something there, that I've missed? ... or maybe this is available in bash scripting? The type of utility I'd like will be able to read/write via std-in/std-out or file-in/file-out, and handle Unicode/Rich-text/Picture/etc clipboard formats... Late Edit: NB: I'm not after a clipboard manager.

• Why should I use Bower? [closed]

  I can fully appreciate the benefits of a package manager like Python PIP, Node npm, or Ruby Gems since they're doing much more than adding files to your applications path. Maybe I'm missing the point, or I'm being obtuse, but here are the negatives I can see: Separate step when building a project Separate dependency to install via another package manager (yo dawg) More clutter in the projects root with bower.json and / or .bowerrc Reliance on the registry being up to date, correct, and available Some imports / references to things like images won't work The positives I can see are these: I don't have to download the dependencies manually Optionally install packages as part of scaffolding based on user prompts or the like I'd really like to know of any benefits I'm unaware of, and I should say I'm not trying to be provocative I genuinely want to know.

• X11 for apache user

  We are using inkscape to convert SVG images uploaded to our server via a web form. For this inkscape offers a batch mode via the -z option, but this batch mode has a flaw: When inkscape is run by the apache user, it breaks saying $ inkscape -z -W drawing.svg X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication. The application 'inkscape' lost its connection to the display localhost:11.0; most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed the application. If you do the same as a normal user you also get errors: Xlib: connection to "localhost:11.0" refused by server Xlib: PuTTY X11 proxy: MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 data did not match (inkscape:24050): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_display_list_devices: assertion `GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed 301.27942 But at least inkscape gives the correct answer (here the number stating the width of the image). Does somebody know how to make this also work for the apache user? Does it make sense to authorize apache to use X (if so how)? In any case it doesn't feel like the right solution...

• Caching Reverse-Proxy ISP Host for a Low-Bandwidth Server

  I am building a webcam w/ HTTP server that will be running from a low-bandwith connection. The content on the site will be changing every 5 to 10 minutes. Instead of serving files directly from this connection, are there hosting companies that can act as a reverse proxy for my site? Therefore, if nobody is using the site, the local internet connection remains idle. And if I receive 1000 hits all at the same time, only one HTTP GET is required, and the hosting company (on a fat pipe) continues serving the other 999 requests? This doesn't sound like a very common usage model, but I feel like this would be the optimal solution to my situation.

  I'm having some trouble finding an answer to my problem. I have a dell desktop (studio hybrid) and i have windows vista on it. The internet on windows vista works great, no problem. But now i downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and I'm having problems. I can't find how to connect to my wireless network, when i click the network icon, it shows a list of things but I can only click 'enable wireless network' or something like that and 'edit connections'. But in this list it also says ( in a grey collor and i can't click it ) : 'No wireless connection, device not ready (firmware missing)" Or something like that. Now i tried several things i read on the internet (using my vista OS cause i can't use ubuntu for the internet, which is really enoying). But none of them helped me. I would like someone to tell me what my problem is or what information I have to give you to get an answer. So tell me if i have to edit a connection, or tell me how i have to get the wireless connection to work and to repair the 'firmware missing problem'. I hope someone can/is willing to help me. Bye
