  • Using "public" vars or attributes in class calls, functional approach

    - by marw
I was always wondering about two things I tend to do in my little projects. Sometimes I will have this design: class FooClass ... self.foo = "it's a bar" self._do_some_stuff(self) def _do_some_stuff(self): print(self.foo) And sometimes this one: class FooClass2 ... self.do_some_stuff(foo="it's a bar") def do_some_stuff(self, foo): print(foo) Although I roughly understand the differences between functional and class approaches, I struggle with the design. For example, in FooClass the self.foo is always accessible as an attribute. If there are numerous calls to it, is that faster than making foo a local variable that is passed from method to method (like in FooClass2)? What happens in memory in both cases? If FooClass2 is preferred (ie. I don't need to access foo) and other attributes inside do not change their states (the class is executed once only and returns the result), should the code then be written as a series of functions in a module?

  • Flowchart with subroutine

    - by Jordy
I am not really sure how to correctly describe my question, so please forgive me if this is a duplicate. I am creating a flowchart for my program where I implement a method. Let's assume I call this method someMethod. The C code could look something like this: bool someMethod(int Foo, int Bar) { foo += 5; bar -= 5; return (foo == bar); } This means that my flowchart will have a subroutine block where I call this function. But how do I correctly show the reader which integers I pass? And when I create the flowchart of "someMethod", I face a similar problem: how do I correctly show the reader that Foo and Bar are passed parameters?

  • Get/Post Controller Logic Best Practice

    - by Brian Mains
In an ASP.NET MVC project (Razor), I have a Get request, which loads two properties on a model, dependent on the property passed into the action method. So if the parameter has a value, the Group property is supplied data. But if not, the Groups collection property is supplied data. In the post action method, when I process the data, to repopulate the view, I have to provide similar logic, and could getaway with returning Action(param) (the get response) to the caller. My question is, based on experience, is that a good practice to get into? I see some downsides to doing that, but adds the lack of code redundancy. Or is there a better alternative?

  • Dynamic Components

    - by Alex
I am attempting to design a component-based architecture that allows Components to be dynamically enabled and disabled, much like the system employed by Unity3D. For example, all Components are implicitly enabled by default; however, if one desires to halt execution of code for a particular Component, one can disable it. Naively, I want to have a boolean flag in Component (which is an abstract class), and somehow serialize all method calls into strings, so that some sort of ComponentManager can check if a given Component is enabled/disabled before processing a method call on it. However, this is a pretty bad solution. I feel like I should employ some variation of the state paradigm, but I have yet to make progress. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

  • Have I mistakenly assumed that my routines are loosely coupled?

    - by Tarun
My Selenium test structures goes as - Data Object class - public class RegistrationData { String firstName = "test first name"; String lastName = "test last name"; // Getter Setter Here } Page Object class which carries out operations on a Web Page - public class RegistrationPage { private RegistrationData regData; public void setRegistrationData(RegistrationData regData) { this.regData = regData(); public NewAccountPage fillRegForm() { enterFirstName("FirstNameTextBoxLocator", regData.getFirstName); enterLastName("LastNameTextBoxLocator", regData.getLastName); // Some more fields are filled here return NewAccountPage(); } } And test class uses them as - public class TestRegistration extends SelTestCase { @Test public void testRegNewUser() { RegistrationData regData = new RegistrationData(); RegistrationPage regPage = New RegistrationPage(); regPage.setRegistrationData(regData) regPage.fillRegForm(); // Some assertion here } } Now since fillRegForm method does not take any argument, Can I assume that it is an example of loose coupling despite I need to set RegistrationData in RegistrationPage before being able to use fillRegForm method.

  • Bitmap & Object Collision Help

    - by MarkEz
    Is it possible to detect when an object and a bitmap collide. I have an arraylist of sprites that I am shooting with an image. I tried using this method here but as soon as the bitmap appears the sprite disappears, this is in the Sprite class: public boolean isCollision(Bitmap other) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub if(other.getWidth() > x && other.getWidth() < x + width && >other.getHeight() > y && other.getHeight() < y + height); return true; }

  • How do I get HDMI out working on an Acer AC700 HDMI?

    - by Kyle
I have installed Ubuntu on my Acer AC700 (Chromebook) using both the Cr-48 method and the script method both of which I think are the same. The only thing that does not work is HDMI out. I assume this is because it uses the Chrome OS kernel to boot so I have hoped that eventually it would update and work. I'm currently running 12.04 with Kernel 3.4.0 and still no luck. I've tried booting in recovery for Ubuntu and attempting to get Xorg to generate a new config but I don't know enough to do anything else and that didn't work. Am I the only one out there? Is there no one else who wants this to be possible Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Where Are Multiple JUnit Test Methods Typically Placed in Code?

    - by Thunderforge
I've just read the Vogella JUnit tutorial and found it very helpful in understanding how to use JUnit. However, I'm a bit confused about what the convention is for placing multiple test methods in code. The tutorial only places one test method in a class, then describes how you can use a test suite to group multiple test classes together. Does this mean that it's common practice for each test class to only have one test method and then test suites are used to chain them together? Or was that just unintended and instead common practice is to put multiple test methods in a class?

  • Hash Function Added To The PredicateEqualityComparer

    - by Paulo Morgado
Sometime ago I wrote a predicate equality comparer to be used with LINQ’s Distinct operator. The Distinct operator uses an instance of an internal Set class to maintain the collection of distinct elements in the source collection which in turn checks the hash code of each element (by calling the GetHashCode method of the equality comparer) and only if there’s already an element with the same hash code in the collection calls the Equals method of the comparer to disambiguate. At the time I provided only the possibility to specify the comparison predicate, but, in some cases, comparing a hash code instead of calling the provided comparer predicate can be a significant performance improvement, I’ve added the possibility to had a hash function to the predicate equality comparer. You can get the updated code from the PauloMorgado.Linq project on CodePlex,

  • Best way to reuse common functions between ASPX pages ?

    - by DFord
I have a bunch of functions that are used across multiple ASPX files. I want to condense these down to one file to be used for all the ASPX files. I have a few ideas but I want to know what the accepted method to doing this would be. I have an idea to just create a class to put them in. However, I was wondering if i could put them in a ascx page, but that does not look like the solution I'm looking for. Is there a accepted method for this type of situation?

want to know if is it possible to use single timer or scheduler method for multiple sprites ? Like I am now working on a game and there could be any number of sprites and i want to perform some actions on all of that sprites, So do I have to use as many timers or schedulers as sprites ? Or How can the job be done using only a single timer or scheduler ? What is I schedule a method and use it for, Say 10 sprites ? Will it affect the performance..?

  • Estimating file transfer time over network?

    - by rocko
I am transferring file from one server to another. So, to estimate the time it would take to transfer some GB's of file over the network, I am pinging to that IP and taking the average time. For ex: i ping to 172.26.26.36 I get the average round trip time to be x ms, since ping send 32 bytes of data each time. I estimate speed of network to be 2*32*8(bits)/x = y Mbps -- multiplication with 2 because its average round trip time. So transferring 5GB of data will take 5000/y seconds Am I correct in my method of estimating time. If you find any mistake or any other good method please share.

  • Multiple parameters vs single parameter(object with multiple properties)

    - by Shwetanka
I have an Entity Student with following properties - (name, joinedOn, birthday, age, batch, etc.) and a function fetchStudents(<params>). I want to fetch students based on multiple filters. In my method I have two ways to pass filters. Pass all filters as params to the method Make a class StudentCriteria with filters as fields and then pass the object of this class While working in java I always go with the second option but recently I'm working in php and I was advised to go with the first way. I am unable to figure out which way is better in maintaining the code, reusability and performance wise. Thanks.

  • Should the networking of my game be a component or a service?

    - by aalcutt
I am working on a windows game and I am trying to understand the XNA GameComponents and GameServices classes and use. From what I understand about a component is that it has an Update method that gets call in every frame, and a service can be referenced from other components if needed. So the way I think a network component would work is that in its Update method it would receive and send data. It probably makes sense to receive the network data once per frame, but it doesn't for sending it. Shouldn't the game send its own updates to others the moment it has it to cut down on lag?

  • Should I install programs from a source tarball (`.tar.gz`), from the Ubuntu Software Centre, or from elsewhere?

    - by Flimm
There are several ways to install an application in Ubuntu: You can download a source tarball (generally a .tar.gz or a .tar.bz2 file) and install it manually. (See How to install a .tar.gz (or .tar.bz2) file?) You can download a .deb file and install it manually, using dpkg or the Software Centre. You can search for the application in the Ubuntu Software Centre and install it there, or use apt with the official Ubuntu repositories. You can find a PPA or a third-party repo, and install it from there. What are the pros and cons of each method? Please discuss security implications, frequency of updates and program reliability of each method in your answer.

  • Core Data - JSON (TouchJSON) on iPhone

    - by Urizen
I have the following code which seems to go on indefinitely until the app crashes. It seems to happen with the recursion in the datastructureFromManagedObject method. I suspect that this method: 1) looks at the first managed object and follows any relationship property recursively. 2) examines the object at the other end of the relationship found at point 1 and repeats the process. Is it possible that if managed object A has a to-many relationship with object B and that relationship is two-way (i.e an inverse to-one relationship to A from B - e.g. one department has many employees but each employee has only one department) that the following code gets stuck in infinite recursion as it follows the to-one relationship from object B back to object A and so on. If so, can anyone provide a fix for this so that I can get my whole object graph of managed objects converted to JSON. #import "JSONUtils.h" @implementation JSONUtils - (NSDictionary*)dataStructureFromManagedObject:(NSManagedObject *)managedObject { NSDictionary *attributesByName = [[managedObject entity] attributesByName]; NSDictionary *relationshipsByName = [[managedObject entity] relationshipsByName]; //getting the values correspoinding to the attributes collected in attributesByName NSMutableDictionary *valuesDictionary = [[managedObject dictionaryWithValuesForKeys:[attributesByName allKeys]] mutableCopy]; //sets the name for the entity being encoded to JSON [valuesDictionary setObject:[[managedObject entity] name] forKey:@"ManagedObjectName"]; NSLog(@"+++++++++++++++++> before the for loop"); //looks at each relationship for the given managed object for (NSString *relationshipName in [relationshipsByName allKeys]) { NSLog(@"The relationship name = %@",relationshipName); NSRelationshipDescription *description = [relationshipsByName objectForKey:relationshipName]; if (![description isToMany]) { NSLog(@"The relationship is NOT TO MANY!"); [valuesDictionary setObject:[self dataStructureFromManagedObject:[managedObject valueForKey:relationshipName]] forKey:relationshipName]; continue; } NSSet *relationshipObjects = [managedObject valueForKey:relationshipName]; NSMutableArray *relationshipArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; for (NSManagedObject *relationshipObject in relationshipObjects) { [relationshipArray addObject:[self dataStructureFromManagedObject:relationshipObject]]; } [valuesDictionary setObject:relationshipArray forKey:relationshipName]; } return [valuesDictionary autorelease]; } - (NSArray*)dataStructuresFromManagedObjects:(NSArray*)managedObjects { NSMutableArray *dataArray = [[NSArray alloc] init]; for (NSManagedObject *managedObject in managedObjects) { [dataArray addObject:[self dataStructureFromManagedObject:managedObject]]; } return [dataArray autorelease]; } //method to call for obtaining JSON structure - i.e. public interface to this class - (NSString*)jsonStructureFromManagedObjects:(NSArray*)managedObjects { NSLog(@"-------------> just before running the recursive method"); NSArray *objectsArray = [self dataStructuresFromManagedObjects:managedObjects]; NSLog(@"-------------> just before running the serialiser"); NSString *jsonString = [[CJSONSerializer serializer] serializeArray:objectsArray]; return jsonString; } - (NSManagedObject*)managedObjectFromStructure:(NSDictionary*)structureDictionary withManagedObjectContext:(NSManagedObjectContext*)moc { NSString *objectName = [structureDictionary objectForKey:@"ManagedObjectName"]; NSManagedObject *managedObject = [NSEntityDescription insertNewObjectForEntityForName:objectName inManagedObjectContext:moc]; [managedObject setValuesForKeysWithDictionary:structureDictionary]; for (NSString *relationshipName in [[[managedObject entity] relationshipsByName] allKeys]) { NSRelationshipDescription *description = [[[managedObject entity]relationshipsByName] objectForKey:relationshipName]; if (![description isToMany]) { NSDictionary *childStructureDictionary = [structureDictionary objectForKey:relationshipName]; NSManagedObject *childObject = [self managedObjectFromStructure:childStructureDictionary withManagedObjectContext:moc]; [managedObject setValue:childObject forKey:relationshipName]; continue; } NSMutableSet *relationshipSet = [managedObject mutableSetValueForKey:relationshipName]; NSArray *relationshipArray = [structureDictionary objectForKey:relationshipName]; for (NSDictionary *childStructureDictionary in relationshipArray) { NSManagedObject *childObject = [self managedObjectFromStructure:childStructureDictionary withManagedObjectContext:moc]; [relationshipSet addObject:childObject]; } } return managedObject; } //method to call for obtaining managed objects from JSON structure - i.e. public interface to this class - (NSArray*)managedObjectsFromJSONStructure:(NSString *)json withManagedObjectContext:(NSManagedObjectContext*)moc { NSError *error = nil; NSArray *structureArray = [[CJSONDeserializer deserializer] deserializeAsArray:[json dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF32BigEndianStringEncoding] error:&error]; NSAssert2(error == nil, @"Failed to deserialize\n%@\n%@", [error localizedDescription], json); NSMutableArray *objectArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; for (NSDictionary *structureDictionary in structureArray) { [objectArray addObject:[self managedObjectFromStructure:structureDictionary withManagedObjectContext:moc]]; } return [objectArray autorelease]; } @end

  • Application stopped unexpectedly at launch

    I've run this on a device and on the emulator. The app stops unexpectedly on both. I have not a clue what is wrong currently. It uses Google API Maps I compiled with Google Api 7. I followed this tutorial http://developer.android.com/guide/tutorials/views/hello-mapview.html (made some alterations clearly) I did use the correct API Key That the final apk is signed with This is the source(If you compile it shouldn't work as it is unsigned) This is the compiled signed apk Log 03-21 00:30:38.912: INFO/ActivityManager(54): Starting activity: Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN flg=0x10000000 cmp=com.chris.stryker.worldly/.com.poppoob.WorldlyMap } 03-21 00:30:39.173: INFO/ActivityManager(54): Start proc com.chris.stryker.worldly for activity com.chris.stryker.worldly/.com.poppoob.WorldlyMap: pid=287 uid=10031 gids={3003, 1015} 03-21 00:30:39.532: DEBUG/ddm-heap(287): Got feature list request 03-21 00:30:40.185: WARN/dalvikvm(287): Unable to resolve superclass of Lcom/chris/stryker/worldly/com/poppoob/WorldlyMap; (17) 03-21 00:30:40.193: WARN/dalvikvm(287): Link of class 'Lcom/chris/stryker/worldly/com/poppoob/WorldlyMap;' failed 03-21 00:30:40.205: DEBUG/AndroidRuntime(287): Shutting down VM 03-21 00:30:40.223: WARN/dalvikvm(287): threadid=3: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x4001b188) 03-21 00:30:40.223: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to instantiate activity ComponentInfo{com.chris.stryker.worldly/com.chris.stryker.worldly.com.poppoob.WorldlyMap}: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.chris.stryker.worldly.com.poppoob.WorldlyMap in loader dalvik.system.PathClassLoader@45a13938 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2417) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2512) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread.access$2200(ActivityThread.java:119) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(ActivityThread.java:1863) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4363) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:618) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.chris.stryker.worldly.com.poppoob.WorldlyMap in loader dalvik.system.PathClassLoader@45a13938 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at dalvik.system.PathClassLoader.findClass(PathClassLoader.java:243) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:573) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:532) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.Instrumentation.newActivity(Instrumentation.java:1021) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2409) 03-21 00:30:40.252: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(287): ... 11 more 03-21 00:30:40.300: INFO/Process(54): Sending signal. • @EJB in @ViewScoped managed bean causes java.io.NotSerializableException

    - by ufasoli
Hi, I've been banging my head around with a @ViewScoped managed-bean. I'm using primeface's "schedule" component in order to display some events. When the user clicks on a specific button a method in the viewscoped bean is called using ajax but every time I get a "java.io.NotSerializableException", if I change the managed-bean scope to request the problem dissapears. What am I doing wrong? any ideas? here is my managed bean : @ManagedBean(name = "schedule") @ViewScoped public class ScheduleMBean implements Serializable { // @EJB // private CongeBean congeBean; @ManagedProperty(value = "#{sessionBean}") private SessionMBean sessionBean; private DefaultScheduleModel visualiseurConges = null; public ScheduleMBean(){ } @PostConstruct public void init() { if(visualiseurConges == null){ visualiseurConges = new DefaultScheduleModel(); } } public void updateSchedule(){ visualiseurConges.addEvent(new DefaultScheduleEvent("test" , new Date(), new Date() )); } public void setVisualiseurConges(DefaultScheduleModel visualiseurConges) { this.visualiseurConges = visualiseurConges; } public DefaultScheduleModel getVisualiseurConges() { return visualiseurConges; } public void setSessionBean(SessionMBean sessionBean) { this.sessionBean = sessionBean; } public SessionMBean getSessionBean() { return sessionBean; } } here is the full-stack
