• PowerShell fomat.ps1xml not reachable

  I'm trying to load Exchange Management Shell and it gives me a big 'ol red error that says: Import-Module : There were errors in loading the format data file: Microsoft.PowerShell, , %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\Exchange\RemotePowerShell\DOMAINNAME.format.ps1xml : File skipped because of the following validation exception: File %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\Exchange\RemotePowerShell\DOMAINNAME.format.ps1xml cannot be loaded. The file %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\ExchangeRemotePowerShell\DOMAINNAME\DOMAINNAME.format.ps1xml is not digitally signed. The script will not execute on the system. Please see "get-help about_signing" for more details... The %APPDATA% is stored on an external server on my network (that I can ping to without problems). I am missing a ton of PS cmdlets too, which I'm presuming are stored in '*.format.ps1xml' I tried finding the directory in which format.ps1xml is supposed to reside on the external server and it's not even created. Can someone tell me where to start?

• Windows server's HDD Spin down daily/nightly - Does it makes sense?

  A Windows Server 2003 R2 has the following hard disk configuration: - 3 internal hard disks attached to a 3Ware unit, configured in Raid 1 + spare unit - 3 external USB backup disks: 2 Verbatim 1TB (Samsung HD103SI) + 1 Western Digital 1TB (WD10EADS) The server runs 365 days per year, h24, however: - at daytime the server/user usage is limited to the internal hard disks - at nighttime there's no user usage, apart from scheduled maintenance tasks, basically the Server will be idle from 7PM to 8AM. apart from nighly backups (few hours). I was wondering if: (a) it makes any sense let Windows manage power savings, allowing disks to spin down accordingly, ** OR** let the disks stay awlays-on, to avoid permature wearing, due to continuous spin up/down (b) leave internal disks always on, and force external disks to power down while idle (this requires third party tools, such as Verbatim's Green button utility) Your thoughts?

• Data Recovery needed with a Sector Zero problem on a HDD

  Left my computer (running XP) copying files to an external drive. Came back a few hours later, and the laptop was pretty hot and had frozen (Ironic aint it). Forced a reboot, and the laptop HDD hasnt worked since. Set it up in an external enclosure, but XP cant mount the HDD to a drive letter, but is able to recognize the manufacturer and drive size (Hitachi-320GB). No noise or rattling when the drive is spinning, but I cant get anything off of it, since i cant mount it, or see much of anything. Computer repair shop ran some software tests and says it came back with a "Zero Sector bad" message, and need to send it to a professional data recovery service. Any other options or ideas, before I have to spend thousands of dollars to recover my data? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! I'm desperate and a poor student! Thanks in Advance, -Jay

  I have two machines, each configured identically as a firewall/load balancer for a busy website. I have set them up with CARP and pfsync on both the internal and external interfaces. The internal interface is behaving as expected (primary listed as MASTER and secondary listed as BACKUP) On both machines, the network interfaces are as follows: em0 - External interface bge0 - Internal interface bge1 - Crossover connection between both machines carp0 - Shared external interface for CARP carp1 - Shared internal interface for CARP I've rewritten the IP addresses and MAC addresses below. • Mac: window manager frozen, have ssh access

  I have a Mac which regularly runs into a problem. The user interface stops reponding, showing a "frozen" user interface. The mouse is still moving but clicking does not trigger anything. This happens about once a week. Solution so far is to force switch-off the Mac and reboot it. I have ssh root access to the Mac. Killing (kill -9) the active application has no visible impact on what is shown on the screen. Any ideas on how to diagnose this? Is there a way to restart the window manager from the ssh shell? Killing /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Resources/WindowServer seems not to be possible. The Mac is an early 2008 iMac and runs Lion with latest updates. /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports is empty. Update: Problem stays after update to Mountain Lion. The WindowServer process is in "uninterruptible wait" state ("U" flag in ps output set): imac:~ root# ps ax|awk "NR==1|| /WindowServer/"|grep -v awk PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND 86 ?? • Netinstalling CentOS if the gateway is in a different subnet

  I have a KVM host (A) running a virtual machine (B). They each have their own external IP address and the networking is setup using bridging between eth0 and br0 on A. B uses eth0, with A being the gateway. The problem is that the two external IP addresses are on different subnets (different /8s in fact) so by default, B claims it cannot reach A (Network Unreachable). I can resolve this by adding a static route on B: echo "any host gateway_ip dev eth0" > /etc/sysconfig/static-routes Modifying /etc/init.d/networking to reload the gateway after applying static routes (I only added the final line before fi): if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/static-routes ]; then grep "^any" /etc/sysconfig/static-routes | while read ignore args ; do /sbin/route add -$args done route add default gw "${GATEWAY}" fi If I then restart networking, it comes online. How can I do this (or work around it some other way) prior to the system being installed, ideally inside an Anaconda kickstart file?

• Unable to access Citrix XenApp 6 published applications externally

  We are trying to use a trial of Citrix XenApp 6 Fundamentals to virtualise a couple of applications as a proof of concept. We haven't ever used it before so I confess to be a noob with it. We can connect to the XenApp web interface, and the iPad app will connect and list the applications, but the applications themselves will not load. I discovered in the .ica file that it was attempting to connect to the internal IP address of the server instead of its static external. I have been following various threads on Citrix but nothing seems to have fixed it for me. The server is deployed on an EC2 instance with a static elastic IP. All the ports are opened and I can telnet into the XenApp server on 1493 and I get the ICA response. I have also run on ALTADDR and provided the external IP address. Does anyone have any ideas?

• How can I mitigate DNS Server outages?

  Let's say I have a root domain of "mysite.com". That domain and its sub-domains have DNS served by an external service - let's call them Setwork Nolutions. If this external company is hit with a DDoS attack, my interally-hosted websites under this domain are no longer accessible at "mysite.com" or "*.mysite.com", even though the website(s) is/are fully up and operational. How can I mitigate such a problem so as to keep end users happy? The only solution others at my company have come up with is to create a second domain - i.e. "mysite2.com", and host its DNS at another company, and then communicate to all end users that this is the website they should use. I think this is ridiculous, and just leads to a bunch of other problems. I'd like to find a solution where we can point to the same website with the same URL without the original DNS host being operational. Any thoughts?

• Does Exchange 2010 lift the restriction that DL addresses must be in Active Directory?

  We'd like to enable end-users to be able to create and maintain their own email distribution lists in Exchange 2010, where those lists may include users inside the company but also customers, partners, etc. who are outside the company. One of the limitations in Exchange 2007 (see this question) was that any member of a DL had to have an entry in active directory. You couldn't just take a group of email addresses (both inside and outside my company) and create an Exchange DL with those addresses without involving Active Directory admins to create entries for each external user. For a company creating hundreds of small mailing lists every month, this was an unacceptable IT expense. So we had to use a separate mailing list solution (GNU mailman) for DLs which included external users. Is this limitation relaxed in Exchange 2010 so we can throw away GNU mailman and use Exchange instead?

• 3CX behind UT7.1 using a callcentric.com SIP account

  Has anyone had any luck with getting 3CX working behind UT7.1 with a SIP account from callcentric.com? I am willing to reset my current UT box back to defaults, and start from there. I have a static public IP assigned to the external interface. My internal addressing is 192.168.76.0 . My 3CX box has 192.168.76.17 . Would anyone be willing to give me a step by step of changes to make in UT / 3CX. I currently have my UT box unplugged, and have replaced it with a Linksys unit. I have port forwarding setup for… TCP/UDP 5060 to 192.168.76.17 UDP 9000-9049 to 192.168.76.17 … and everything works great. I also have additional external IPs available if that helps.

• What are the strategies available to minimise badblocks on an encrypted partition?

  Let me explain my backup strategy and the problem I am facing. My current backup strategy: Open encrypted container and execute Carbon Copy Cleaner on it at least once a week. Rotate backup disks. Problem: I have an Truecrypt partition on my 1st external hard disk. I recently found out that some files on this encrypted partition cannot be read due to bad blocks (reported by Antonio Diaz's GNU 'ddrescue'). My backup strategy is ineffective in this scenario because bad blocks are discovered during backup. Possible strategy Strategy #0: Have the encrypted partition over a RAID 1 with 2 disks. Is this a suitable strategy ? Strategy #1: Do you think of any other one ? Environment: Mac OS X 10.8 External 2.5" hard disk (SATA) No RAID

  one of our customers uses SAP through VMWare ThinApp. In SAP there is a button that launches an .Net application from a server. When starting the .Net-application directly, there is no error. If the user tries to start the application by clicking the button in the ThinApp-Application, it displays the following errors: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. Please contact the application's support team for more information. After clicking "OK" it displays: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! R6030 - CRT not initialized So, does the customer have to install some components into his ThinApp (if yes, which?) to get things working? Regards, inno ----- [EDIT] ----- @Sean: It's installed the following way: The .exe of the .Net-Application is on a mapped drive on a server. All clients have the requirements installed (.Net-framework for example) and start the .exe from the mapped drive. The ThinApp-Application tries to start this application and throws the mentioned exceptions. AFAIK there are no entry points for this application configured. What I should also mention is: The .Net-Application crashes during execution. That means, we have a debug mode implemented that shows what the application is doing. The application shows what it's doing and after some steps it crashes. The interesting point is: It's a .Net-application, not a C++ Application.

• How do I setup unison to sync a folder one way

  I have a 1tb NAS that has a 1tb usb external hard attached I have prepared the file system on the usb disk and mounted it I want to 100% sync my data from my nas to the usb disk - but I want it to be incremental and only have the NAS as the 'master' - eg if a file changes on the usb external hard drive I want it to ignore this change as its not the live version (not that I think the files will change on the usb disk but im paranoid the live could get overwritten) Also if a file gets deleted on live I want to retain the deleted file on the usb disk Can unison sync one-way and achive the above for me? if so with simply unison sorce/ target/ Work?   I have a Acer Ferrari 3000 noetbook that I like to connnect to a external dispaly and show it in portrait mode. The computer runs a ATI Radeon 9200 graphic chipset and I can't find the setting for portrait and start believe the graphics card actually doesn't support it? I've looked at the latest drivers and can see that this has changed. What are my options? Can I buy some sort of external graphics thingy or other possible solutions will get up votes! ;)

• My Music Folder Appearing On Desktop

  Hello, I use Windows 7 and have recently been encountering a problem with the My Music folder. I keep all my music on an external hard drive and use a third party program such as VLC to play albums. I also have a large list of single MP3s that I play in WinAmp. Neither of these cause any problem but whenever I play a song in the bundled Windows Media Player a new My Music shortcut appears on the desktop. WMP is my default player, I've tried changing it to other players but whenever I use WMP it still creates this shortcut. The My Music folder is empty as all music is stored on the external hard drive and I've set WMP to collate, store and retain no information about anything, so I don't think it's anything to do with playlist history or anything. Any ideas what might be happening? Any help in solving this annoyance is appreciated.

• Windows Media Center doesn't see my movies

  I am trying to configure my Windows Media Center (Windows 7 Ultimate). I selected folder with my movies and added it to the library, but when I went to the movies library, it says "There are no items in this library yet - Windows Media Center is searching for media files in the background...". I have all necessary codecs installed, Windows Media Player opens those movies correctly. When I right click on the file - Open with - Windows Media Center it also plays them without any problem. Any ideas why they don't appear in the libraries? Edit: Movies are coded with divx and xvid codecs and they have ".avi" extension. Windows doesn't have problems playing them. I told Media Center where the files are. I even pointed Windows Media Center to a folder with only one .avi file it still couldn't find anything there. (I have given it quiet some time, even though searching in the directory with only one file shouldn't take more than a few seconds.) When I add a folder with a lot of movies, I get a dialog box "You can wait while media is added or select OK to continue using Windows Media Center.".                                                                        At the end it says it added about 90 movies, but when I go to the libraries, it's still empty.

• Oracle RAC interconnect in a Dell M1000e Blade Enclosure

  We are looking at a Dell M1000e enclosure and appropriate Blades with 4 NICs each. We are planning on running Linux/Oracle 11g RAC on two blades, storage will be handled on an iSCSI SAN for which two NICs (via passthrough) will be connected leaving us with two NICs (via blade centre switches). We would like to have an interconnect (obviously) , an external IP and an internal IP. Would best practice be to: bond the remaining two interfaces and VLAN as appropriate to provide three virtual interfaces? run the interconnect on one interface and VLAN the external/internal interfaces? purchase a blade with more NICs as the above is a terrible idea? Another option? Please feel free to point out the blindingly obvious or to relevant documentation on support.oracle. I am specifically interested in supported configurations and best practices. • I need a server or service that reroutes DNS requests

  We have two external servers, Dev and Prod. We are a software house and in the code we have a subdomain metrics.company.com that points to Prod. Development is continuous and our internal and external developers and testers will need to switch from Dev to Prod and back again. It is not an option to have a different sub domain in the code during development and change this for production. The way we wish to switch between Dev and Prod is to use DNS. We need a public DNS server that behaves normally apart from routing metrics.company.com to Dev. The users will be able to swap their DNS back and forward to hit the different servers. What is the easiest way to do this? Is there a company that hosts this service or am I going to have to rent a server and set it up myself? Any help would be much appreciated.

• Mac updated just now, postgres now broken

  I run postgres 9.1 / ruby 1.9.2 / rails 3.1.0 on a maxbook air for local dev. It's all been running smoothly for months, (though this is the first time I've done development on a mac.) It's a macbook air from last year, and today I got the mac osx software update message as I have a few times before, and my system downloaded approx 450mb of updates and restarted. It now says it's on OSX 10.7.3. Point is, postgres has stopped working, when I start my thin server (mirror heroku cedar) as normal, and then browse to my rails app I get: PG::Error could not connect to server: Permission denied Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/pgsql_socket/.s.PGSQL.5432"? What happened? After browsing around a few questions I'm still confused, but here's some extra info: Running psql from command line gives same error I can run pgadmin 3 and connect via it and run SQL no problems Running which psql shows the version as /usr/bin/psql I created a PostgreSQL user back when I got the mac (it's always been on lion) I've no idea why, almost certainly I was following a tutorial which I neglected to store in my notes. Point is I am aware there is a _postgres user as well. I know it's rubbish, but apart from a note on passwords, I don't have any extra info on how I configured postgres - though the obvious implication is that I did not use the _postgres user. Anyone have suggestions or information on what might have changed / what I can try to debug and fix? Thanks. • NLB RPC server is unavailable on the specified computer

  Hi guys, Firstly, I'll admit that my networking knowledge is limited so as people request more information I'll update this question accordingly. I am trying to create a NLB Cluster across 2 Windows Server 2008 Web Servers. Neither of the machines are members of a domain, and both have 2 NICs (one for processing external web traffic, and one for communicating internally). I have installed NLB on both machines, and have created a cluster on Host A and added itself to it. However, when I try and add Host B (using the address from the external NIC) I get the following error : "The RPC server is unavailable on the specified computer". On Host B I can see that the RPC service is running fine. I can also ping and RDP from Host A to Host B with no problems either. I have disabled the windows firewall on both machines but that had no effect

• Old notebook internal display randomly not recognized

  I have an old Acer TM4001 notebook. If the laptop is powered-off, with the lid closed, when I power it on, it generally works. Then, without touching anything, if I reboot the computer the internal display wil not work anymore. To make it working again I need to shut down the pc, close and reopen the lid and then turn it on. If I close and reopen the lid if it is not working after power the pc on, it won't work. When the screen is working, closing and opening it has no effect (the data cable seems ok). The external monitor always works as expected: If the internal display is not detected, the external will be the main (and only) display. This is not OS-related. When the screen is not working I cannot see the POST. What could be the cause for this?

• Puppet: how to use data from a MySQL table in Puppet 3.0 templates?

  I have some data whose source-of-truth is in a MySQL database, size is expected to max out at the some-thousands-rows range (in a worst-case scenario) and I'd like to use puppet to configure files on some servers with that data (mostly iterating through those rows in a template). I'm currently using Puppet 3.0.x, and I cannot change the fact that MySQL will be the authoritative source for that data. Please note, data comes from external sources and not from puppet or from the managed nodes. What possible approaches are there? Which one would you recommend? Would External Node Classifiers be useful here? My "last resort" would be regularly dumping the table to a YAML file and reading that through Hiera to a Puppet template, or to directly dump the table in one or more pre-formatted text file(s) ready to be copied to the nodes. There is an unanswered question on SF about system users but the fundamental issue is probably similar to mine - he's trying to get data out of MySQL.

• SQL Server Reporting Services - website blank, builder works

  We have a few reports in SQL Server Reporting Services. For some reason when we run the report from the website, it doesn't return any data. When I run the same report from the Report Builder, it returns data.
