• ESXi and Windows Server CPU parking

  For those that don't know, CPU parking is a feature in recent Windows Server releases that allows Windows to pretty much drop a CPU core to zero use, and having nothing use it. It's been introduced as a power-saving measure. There's more detail about it here, amongst other places. However what I'm curious about is whether this matter on a virtualised guest - or is CPU parking more of a hindrance than a help, given that the physical CPUs are managed by ESXi, not Windows, and that a parked CPU is less likely to deal with traffic unless the scheduler deems there's enough work to unpark the CPU? I've not found anything about this - I do suspect it will be very much based on a given workload, but I've not seen any discussion (unlike, say, whether hyper-threading has any effect, which seems to be discussed regularly). Whilst I do understand the "test with your workload" I was wondering if there was any advice/guidelines out there that I've missed.

• Emails forwarded via postfix get flagged as spam and forged in Gmail

  I'm trying to setup a forwarding only email server. I'm running into the problem where all messages forwarded via postfix are getting put into gmail's spam folder and getting flagged as forged. I'm testing a very similar setup on a cpanel box and their forwarded emails make it through without any problem. • Can't connect to STunnel when it's running as a service

  I've got STunnel configured to proxy non SSL POP3 requests to GMail on port 111. This is working fine when STunnel is running as a desktop app, but when I run the STunnel service, I can't connect to port 111 on the machine (using Outlook Express for example). The Stunnel log file shows the port binding is succeeding, but it never sees a connection. There's something preventing the connection to that port when STunnel is running as a service? • Can't connect to STunnel when it's running as a service

  I've got STunnel configured to proxy non SSL POP3 requests to GMail on port 111. This is working fine when STunnel is running as a desktop app, but when I run the STunnel service, I can't connect to port 111 on the machine (using Outlook Express for example). The Stunnel log file shows the port binding is succeeding, but it never sees a connection. There's something preventing the connection to that port when STunnel is running as a service? • Win 2008 single server development environment (architecture)

  I have a few questions about a test development environment that I’m setting up on this server: Intel Core i7-920 Quadcode incl. Hyper Threading 8 GB DDR3 RAM 2x 750 GB SATA-II (probably software RAID 1) The server is going to support max 5 users, maybe 10 when stressed. I was hoping that I could run all the following products on the same server: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 w/ IIS SQL Server 2008 x64 (R2 when released) Team Foundation Server 2010 Sharepoint Foundation 2010 I know this sounds overkill, but remember that this is for development purpose and testing. This is not a production environment. My question if this will be possible at all? Should I run it all on one Windows 2008 installation, or should I run it in multiple virtual environments using Hyper-V? What do you think?

• Why did cherokee-admin-launcher crash?

  I'm trying out the Cherokee http server on a seemingly fine machine. Following simple set-up instructions, I tried running cherokee-admin-launcher but it printed error messages and hung up. Ctrl-C did not kill it; I had to kill -9 it from another xterm. OTOH, cherokee-admin ran fine (or at least got a lot further). • What are the mandatory Linux kernel modules to run inside of ESXi

  I'm used to rolling my own kernels for servers, as it nicely minimizes the number of exploits (and the resulting patches) to take care of. In a traditional (bare metal) world, the whole process is about knowing what you have (hardware), and what you need (Ethernet, IPv4, iptables, etc.) In a virtualized environment, some things stay the same (still need Ethernet and IPv4), some things go away (power management), and then there are some new needs (vxnet3, or vmware-tools, even though that's compiled outside of the kernel). So my question mostly concerns itself with the last two categories: what can I remove completely, and what new stuff do I want? For example, what IO scheduler do I want, if all my disk operations are going through another filesystem/scheduler/cache to get to the virtual disk? Do I need hyper-threading enabled, or is the VM going to show them to me anyway as a CPU anyway? Do I need Large Receive Offload turned on, or is that something that the hypervisor's network drivers are going to do for me?

• Nginx Tornado Combination Causing 502 Bad Gateway Errors

  We are facing a problem with inconsistent 502 errors and tracking down the reasons has been a very frustrating exercise. We can reproduce the problem by sending several simultaneous requests quickly. The problem is that several is only in the range of 10 to 20 within a 5 seconds (not a typo). So clearly this type of load should be handled easily. We really like the Nginx + Tornado approach but are considering going to a more traditional (e.g. threading) approach because this problem has been very difficult to solve. I was wondering if you a) know how to fix this issue and b) how we can tracked down the culprit(s). The log files simply identify there being a connection refused. We have the same problem as this post: How do I debug a HTTP 502 error? But there is no answer provided on how to solve the problem so I'm hoping you can help because this may be a common issue with this type of setup. Thanks in advance, Paul

• Why won't Windows use the other CPU cores?

  In Windows Task Manager the Performance tab shows the first CPU maxed out, the other 7 just idling along with the occasional spike. What gives? More info: I've got 8GB and only 4.5GB are being used. The Processes tab has no indication of any process hogging processing power. In fact System Idle Process is 98-99. When I program stuff and have like 8 to 12 applications going (several directly unrelated to programming of course) my computer slows to a crawl. Sysyem Info: Intel Core i7-2600K Processor (quad-core with hyper-threading), 8GB RAM, Intel BOXDZ68BC LGA 1155 Motherboard, 500GB HDD

• .NET SerialPort DataReceived event not firing

  I have a WPF test app for evaluating event-based serial port communication (vs. polling the serial port). The problem is that the DataReceived event doesn't seem to be firing at all. I have a very basic WPF form with a TextBox for user input, a TextBlock for output, and a button to write the input to the serial port. VSPE has worked admirably in the past, and it's not clear why it would only malfunction with .NET's SerialPort class, but I mention it just in case. When I hit the button on my form to send the data, my Hyperterminal window (connected on COM2) shows that the data is getting through. Yes, I disconnect Hyperterminal when I want to test my form's ability to read the port. I've tried opening the port before wiring up the event. No change. I've read through another post here where someone else is having a similar problem. None of that info has helped me in this case. If I type into the console app, the WPF app DataReceived event fires, with the expected threading error (which I know how to deal with). If I type into the WPF app, the console app DataReceived event fires, and it echoes the data. I'm guessing the issue is somewhere in my use of the VSPE software, which is set up to treat one serial port as both input and output. And through some weirdness of the SerialPort class, one instance of a serial port can't be both the sender and receiver. Anyway, I think it's solved.

At this point, I can also remove the "MetadataHttp" metadata endpoint completely, and it wouldn't make any difference. I'm using .NET 3.5 SP1. Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong here?

  I want to subscribe report on specific schedule in reporting services 2008. i.e report will dilever to user automatically on schedule. I am using visual studio 2008. I have done the configuration setting (rsreportserver.config, app.config after adding refrences of asmx files) by refrence msdn. The code is running fine (no exception occur) and I also get subscription id through calling create subscription indicate all going fine. But after running the code no entry made in Subscription table of ReportServer database. And also not get any mail. While through report server web tool, I can get email and also entery made in database but not from coe. Please someone help me. What I am missing.   Hi, I am basically teaching myself how to use RoR and MongoDB at the same time. I am following the very good book / tutorial : http://railstutorial.org/ I decided to replace Sqlite3 by MongoDB using the mongomapper gem. Everything works out about alright, but I am having some non-blocking little issues that I truly wish I could get rid of. In chapter 6, when working with validation I got 2 issues: - I don't know how to get the validations messages back like with Sqlite3. The "standard" code is: $ rails console --sandbox >> user = User.new(:name => "", :email => "[email protected]") >> user.save => false >> user.valid? => false >> user.errors.full_messages => ["Name can't be blank"] but if I try to do the same with MongoMapper, it throws an error saying that errors is undefined function. So does it mean that this is simply not implemented in mongomapper / mongo driver ? Or is there some other clever way to do this that I could not figure ? The message displayed is the one returned from the db ie "The value '32/4/1967' is not valid for DateOfBirth.". I tried to enter some break points around the code, and found out that the "value" in attribute is always null when the date is incorrect, but always gets a value if the date is in correct format. The same ( value == null) is passed also in the code generated by the designer. This thing is driving me nuts. Please can anyone help me deal with this? Also if someone can tell me where exactly is the point of entry from the view to the database. Is it related to the model binder? because i wanted to check exactly what value is passed once i press the "submit" button. Thank you.

  I have a problem when serializing a Dictionary<string,Person> to IsolatedStorageSettings.   Hello, I'm trying to write a not so smart factorization program and trying to do it in parallel using TPL. However, after about 15 minutes of running on a core 2 duo machine, I am getting an aggregate exception with an overflow exception inside it. I should note that I'm relatively new to MVC design, so pls bear my ignorance. Here goes : I have a regular form on which various details about a person are shown. One of them is "Date of Birth". My view is like this <div class="form-items"> <%: Html.Label("DateOfBirth", "Date of Birth:") %> <%: Html.EditorFor(m => m.DateOfBirth) %> <%: Html.ValidationMessageFor(m => m.DateOfBirth) %> </div> I'm using an editor template i found, to show only the date correctly : <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<System.DateTime?>"%> <%= Html.TextBox("", (Model.HasValue ? Model.Value.ToShortDateString() : string.Empty))%> I used LinqToSql designer to create my model from an sql database. In order to do some validation i made a partial class Person to extend the one created by the designer (under the same namespace) : [MetadataType(typeof(IPerson))] public partial class Person : IPerson { //To create buddy class } public interface IPerson { [Required(ErrorMessage="Please enter a name")] string Name { get; set; } [Required(ErrorMessage="Please enter a surname")] string Surname { get; set; } [Birthday] DateTime? DateOfBirth { get; set; } [Email(ErrorMessage="Please enter a valid email")] string Email { get; set; } } I want to make sure that a correct date is entered. So i created a custom DataAnnotation attribute in order to validate the date : public class BirthdayAttribute : ValidationAttribute { private const string _errorMessage = "Please enter a valid date"; public BirthdayAttribute() : base(_errorMessage) { } public override bool IsValid(object value) { if (value == null) { return true; } DateTime temp; bool result = DateTime.TryParse(value.ToString(), out temp); return result; } } Well, my problem is this. Once i enter an incorrect date in the DateOfBirth field then no custom message is displayed even if use the attribute like [Birthday(ErrorMessage=".....")]. The message displayed is the one returned from the db ie "The value '32/4/1967' is not valid for DateOfBirth.". I tried to enter some break points around the code, and found out that the "value" in attribute is always null when the date is incorrect, but always gets a value if the date is in correct format. The same ( value == null) is passed also in the code generated by the designer. This thing is driving me nuts. Please can anyone help me deal with this? Also if someone can tell me where exactly is the point of entry from the view to the database. Is it related to the model binder? because i wanted to check exactly what value is passed once i press the "submit" button. Thank you.
