    I am trying to deploy a custom registry entry which I exported from a test machine. It looks like below. I came across THIS similar request on another site, but I couldn't make it to work.   • Windows 7 File Associations .mov

    I created a new windows 7 SP1 base image. Everything is all fine and dandy with that. So i am now installing standard applications I would like Quicktime to manage .mov files. The only problem is WMP (Windows Media Player) won't give up the association to .mov files. It's driving me crazy... i've been reading threads on how to fix file associations. I would like to do it via registry, powershell or cmdline.   • Program error trying to generate Outlook 2013 email from Visual Basic 2010 [on hold]

    I am using vb to send emails through outlook. Currently we have a mix of outlook versions at our office: 2010 and 2013 with a mix of 32 bit and 64 bit (a mess, I know). I have referenced the version 15 dll for 2013 and it seems to be backward compatible, but when I try to use the above code for 2013 (it is 64 bit) it says it cannot start Microsoft Outlook. A program error has occured. This is happening on the application Dim statement line. I have tried googling around but there doesn't seem to be much out there referencing 2013 but I feel that the problem here probably has more to do with 64 bit than the software version.     So, although you will be able to use your existing .NET skills to develop Metro apps, it turns out Microsoft are limiting Visual Studio 2011 Express to Metro-only. From the Express website: Visual Studio 11 Express for Windows 8 provides tools for Metro style app development. To create desktop apps, you need to use Visual Studio 11 Professional, or higher. Oh dear. To develop any sort of non-Metro application, you will need to pay for at least VS Professional. I suspect Microsoft (or at least, certain groups within Microsoft) have a very explicit strategy in mind. By making VS Express Metro-only, developers who don't want to pay for Professional will be forced to make their simple one-shot or open-source application in Metro. This increases the number of applications available for Windows 8 and Windows mobile devices, which in turn make those platforms more attractive for consumers. When you use the free VS 11 Express, instead of paying Microsoft, you provide them a service by making applications for Metro, which in turn makes Microsoft's mobile offering more attractive to consumers, increasing their market share. Of course, it remains to be seen if developers forced to jump onto the Metro bandwagon will simply jump ship to Android or iOS instead. At least, that's what I think is going on. With Microsoft, who really knows?

  • Rant - Why is Windows Azure not available in Africa?

    Yesterday at the .NET user group meeting in Kampala Uganda  I gave a talk on cloud computing with Windows Azure  (details will be in my next blog post). The guys where excited. Without owning they own inftrastucture and at low cost they can build scalable , highly available applications. Not quite. Azure accounts are only available to people in particular countries - none from Africa. I attended PDC in 2008 when Microsoft unleashed Windows Azure. One of the case studies to show the benefits ofr cloud computing was a project in Africa for an education service in Ethiopia. The point they where making was that the cloud was perfect for scenarios where computing infrastructure is not sophiscated, like Ethiopia. Perfect , i thought. So i got my beta account from PDC and started playing around in the cloud. Then Azure goes live , my beta account does not work any more and I cant pay because am from Uganda. Microsoft , this sucks. I dont know the reasons for Microsoft doing this, but am sure we can work out something. We in Africa need the cloud more than anybody else in the world. Setting up data centers that are higly scalable and available for our startups is not an option we have. But we also cant pay for cloud computing with Microsoft. Microsoft, we know we are a tiny insigficant market for a company your size, but your excluding us only continues to widen the digital divide. Microsoft , how about you have a reseller model for cloud computing. Instead of trying to deal direclty with each client you have local partners who help you sell and bill your cloud services. I think that would lead to Windows Azure being available in Africa. I can help you resell in Uganda.

  • How does formatting works with a PowerShell function that returns a set of elements?

    If I write this small function : function Foo { Get-Process | % { $_ } } And if I run Foo It displays only a small subset of properties: PS C:\Users\Administrator> foo Handles NPM(K) PM(K) WS(K) VM(M) CPU(s) Id ProcessName ------- ------ ----- ----- ----- ------ -- ----------- 86 10 1680 412 31 0,02 5916 alg 136 10 2772 2356 78 0,06 3684 atieclxx 123 7 1780 1040 33 0,03 668 atiesrxx ... ... But even if only 8 columns are shown, there are plenty of other properties (as foo | gm is showing). What is causing this function to show only this 8 properties? I'm actually trying to build a similar function that is returning complex objects from a 3rd party .Net library. The library is flatting a 2 level hierarchy of objects : function Actual { $someDotnetObject.ACollectionProperty.ASecondLevelCollection | % { $_ } } This method is dumping the objects in a list form (one line per property). How can I control what is displayed, keeping the actual object available?   • .NET vs Windows 8: Rematch!

    So, although you will be able to use your existing .NET skills to develop Metro apps, it turns out Microsoft are limiting Visual Studio 2011 Express to Metro-only. From the Express website: Visual Studio 11 Express for Windows 8 provides tools for Metro style app development. To create desktop apps, you need to use Visual Studio 11 Professional, or higher. Oh dear. To develop any sort of non-Metro application, you will need to pay for at least VS Professional. I suspect Microsoft (or at least, certain groups within Microsoft) have a very explicit strategy in mind. By making VS Express Metro-only, developers who don't want to pay for Professional will be forced to make their simple one-shot or open-source application in Metro. This increases the number of applications available for Windows 8 and Windows mobile devices, which in turn make those platforms more attractive for consumers. When you use the free VS 11 Express, instead of paying Microsoft, you provide them a service by making applications for Metro, which in turn makes Microsoft's mobile offering more attractive to consumers, increasing their market share. Of course, it remains to be seen if developers forced to jump onto the Metro bandwagon will simply jump ship to Android or iOS instead. At least, that's what I think is going on. With Microsoft, who really knows?

This control eliminates the need to use four DropDownlist controls to hold the range values and the need for a validation control.     When using XPath in .NET one of the gotchas to be aware of is that all namespaces must be named, otherwise you’ll end up with no results. Default namespaces that are specified with xmlns alone still need to be recognized in the XPath query! Say I had a bit of XML like what is returned from the QueryService web service in Sharepoint: 1: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> 2: <ResponsePacket xmlns="urn:Microsoft.Search.Response"> 3: <Response> 4: <Range> 5: ... 6: <Results> 7: <Document xmlns="urn:Microsoft.Search.Response.Document" relevance="849"> 8: ...   When consuming and navigating this response with XPath it is necessary to name all namespaces.   • Stats on programming languages usage

    I'm doing some research for a project and I'm trying to find out what are the 5 most-used server-side languages. I found this chart (http://i.stack.imgur.com/vPXgR.jpg) on css-tricks.com (produced from a poll the site owner ran), but in the comments, some suggested that the poll may be skewed in favor of php because most of the site visitors are designers. I'm not sure if this chart looks realistic. Does anyone know of similar stats?

  • Windows W8, L8 and now H8

    Windows 8 is having to endure with a lot of headwind at the moment. The weather forecast doesn’t appear to improve in the near future either with prominent game developers and publishers taking to the barricades accusing Microsoft of building a closed ecosystem. I am forced to side with this opinion as I too see services the likes of Steam as playing an important role in the gaming world, which just happens to be an industry that cannot be sidelined. What Microsoft is attempting to do is merge the PC and mobile markets. The Windows Marketplace is to be the only place where you can purchase Windows applications in the future starting now with Metro apps. This is what Apple, Google and Microsoft have been doing with mobile devices for some time now and it’s what we have all come to expect. The PC market is different, however. It has always been open, which has resulted in a diverse market allowing for third parties to build successful distribution and marketing networks. You could argue that Microsoft is just doing something that Steam has been doing for a long time now but the difference is that Microsoft would own both the marketplace AND that operating system, which would eventually give it dominance over the whole Windows application distribution network. Currently there is no real alternative to Windows in the PC gaming world but I would expect to see Mac OS and Linux getting more popular if Microsoft does not notice the signals coming from the gaming industry and choose to once again open up the markets on the PC.

  • Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.InvalidOperationException: Two components with the same id.

    I'm working in ASP .NET dynamic data. In one of my edit controls I wanted to allow the user to add records from a related table to the current page. (Literally, if you are on the orders page, you would be allowed to add a new customer to the system on this page as well, and then associate it with that order). So, I have a DetailsView set to InsertMode, nested inside of an UpdatePanel, which is shown by a ModalPopupExtender which is invoked when 'add new' is clicked. This doohickey works the first time i execute this process, that is, a customer is added (and i update the dropdown list as well). However, I realized it didn't work (properly) again until I refreshed the entire page. When I attached my debugger, my worst fears were realized (ok, not really). But an exception was being thrown: "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.InvalidOperationException: Two components with the same id." Which seemed to be complaining about a Calendar Extender Control that is part of the details view. Any guidance on what's going on here would be great. Thanks.

  • How to check absolute control visibility and how to be notified for changes of absolute visibility

    I have several controls inside my form and I perform several changes (Text, Font, BackColor etc.) on these controls. My changes are necessary only if the controls are visible. So, I want to stop performing my changes on controls that are not visible. I want to keep changing my controls when they become visible again. I can use Control.Visible and Control.VisibleChanged, however they are not satisfactory for my purpose. The problem is, VisibleChanged is not fired when control becomes invisible due to its parent (i.e. because its parent became invisible). Interestingly, it is fired when control becomes visible again. Is there a way to be notified for visibility changes without recursively listening parent visibility changes? I also want to be notified when another form is placed over my form and some of my controls become non-visible. I call this absolute visibility. (Is there another term for it?) Is there an event that I can use for this purpose? Thanks.
