• How to start networking on a wired interface before logon in Ubuntu Desktop Edition

  Problem Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition (and possibly previous versions as well, I haven't tested them) has no network connections after boot until at least 1 user logs in. This means any services that require networking (e.g. openssh-server) are not available until someone logs in locally either via gdm, kdm, or a TTY. Background Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition uses the NetworkManager service to take commands from the nm-applet in Gnome (or it's equivalent in KDE). As I understand it, while NetworkManager is running at boot, it is not issued any commands to connect until you login for the first time because nm-applet isn't running until you login and your Gnome session starts (or similar for KDE). I'm not sure what prompts NetworkManager to connect to the network when you login via a TTY. There are several relevant variables involved in starting up the network connections including: Wired vs Wireless (and the resulting drivers, SSID, passwords, and priorities) Static vs DHCP Multiple interfaces Constraints Support Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (bonus points for additional supported versions) Support wired eth0 interface Receive an IP address via DHCP Receive DNS information via DHCP (obviously the DHCP server must provide this information) Enable networking at the proper time (e.g. some time after file systems are loaded but before network services like ssh start) Switching distros or versions (e.g. to Server Edition) is not an acceptable solution Switching to a Static IP configuration is not an acceptable solution Question How to start networking on a wired interface before logon in Ubuntu Desktop Edition? What I have tried Per this guide, adding the following entry into /etc/network/interfaces so that NetworkManager won't manage the eth0 interface: auth eth0 iface inet dhcp After reboot eth0 is down. Issuing ifconfig eth0 up brings the interface up but it receives no IP address. Issuing dhclient eth0 instead Does bring up the interface and it Does receive an IP address. Completely removing the NetworkManager package in addition to the settings above. I'm a bit confused with the whole UpStart/SysVinit mangling that's going in Ubuntu currently (I'm more familiar with the CentOS world). However, directly issuing sudo /etc/init.d/networking start Or sudo start networking does not bring up the eth0 interface at all, much less get an IP address. When running it, I get KeyError: 138 module body in test.py at line 4 function __init__ in pcap.py at line 105 Program exited. Why is this? What's wrong?

• windbg dv cmd fail - Private symbols (symbols.pri) are required for locals

  i have a C++ application compiled with VS 2008 with pdb file enabled. After i tried to use dv command to display local vars, it shows the following message: Unable to enumerate locals, HRESULT0x80004005 Private symbols (symbols.pri) are required for locals. Type ".hh dbgerr005" for details. Note that: i've run the "dv" command on the correct frame which has the symbol file. i can use "dt" command successfully. i've included the symbol path and the pdb file has been loaded successfully as following: start end module name 00400000 0043f000 helloworld (private pdb symbols) c:\test... Does anyone know the cause? Is there any configuration i missed to enable local var watch? Or VS 2008 pdb is not supported by windbg (i'm using the latest windbg version)?

  I'm using the JQUERY UI Accordion module: <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() { $("#sidebar_column_accordion").accordion({ fillSpace: true, icons: { 'header': 'ui-icon-plus', 'headerSelected': 'ui-icon-minus' } }); }); </script> By using the fillSpace option, the accordion takes up the entire height of the window which I want. Problem is it calculate the height on page load, and if the user resizes their browser, it does not adjust... Is there a way to have the accordion recalculate the height/size when the browser window is resized? Thanks

  I searched for this after seeing it's the top rated item when profiling using Very Sleepy, and it seems everyone gets the answer "it's a system function, ignore it". But Sleepy's hint for the function says: Hint: KiFastSystemCallRet often means the thread was waiting for something else to finish. Possible causes might be disk I/O, waiting for an event, or maybe just calling Sleep(). Now, my app is absolutely thrashing the CPU and so it's a bit weird 33% of the time is spent waiting for something to happen. Do I really just ignore it? EDIT: apparently, 77% of the calls to this come from QueryOglResource (?) which is in module nvd3dnum. I think that might be nvidia Direct3D stuff, i.e rendering.

  I have been using Prism 2.0 for a personal project for a few months now. I have recently heard of Caliburn and am wondering if there are compelling reasons for me to consider that instead. I like Prism's dynamic module loading capability. I intend to build modules for my application and would like to be able to deploy them in a modular manner. Is that also possible with Caliburn? What are the advantages of Caliburn over Prism? (I read that Prism will also have a new version by September 2010 that will leverage .Net 4.0. and am keeping my application flexible to be updated by then as well.)

I'd like to make this happen using wexpect, which is a port of Python's module pexpect to Windows. I'm having trouble installing or importing wexpect though. I've put wexpect in the folder Lib, along with all other modules. I can import those other modules but just not wexpect.   Hi, I'm using the subprocess module to start a subprocess and connect to it's output stream (stdout). I want to be able to execute non-blocking reads on its stdout. Is there a way to make .readline non-bloking or to check if there is data on the stream before I invoke .readline? I'd like this to be portable or at least work under Windows and Linux. here is how I do it for now (It's blocking on the .readline if no data is avaible): p = subprocess.Popen('myprogram.exe', stdout = subprocess.PIPE) str = p.stdout.readline() Thanks for your help.

Help on class super in module builtins: class super(object) | super() -> same as super(__class__, <first argument>) | super(type) -> unbound super object | super(type, obj) -> bound super object; requires isinstance(obj, type) | super(type, type2) -> bound super object; requires issubclass(type2, type) Until now I've used super() only without arguments and it worked as expected (by a Java developer). Questions: What does "bound" mean in this context? What is the difference between bound and unbound super object? When to use super(type, obj) and when super(type, type2)? Would it be better to name the super class like in Mother.__init__(...)?

  Hi, I've been doing just simple archetype projects until now, and always after dependencies definition and saving pom.xml, immediately after that the Maven Dependencies library was full of libraries. But now I declared: parent(pom packaging, scm, repository management) parent(pom packaging, shared dependencies) actual project (jar packaging, few more dependencies) actual project (jar packaging, few more dependencies) I created them from the upper one by "Create module" ... Problem is, that I can't make it automatically fill the Maven Dependencies library In .classpath file there is this line <classpathentry kind="con" path="org.maven.ide.eclipse.MAVEN2_CLASSPATH_CONTAINER"/> as in other "working" projects, but there is nothing on the classpath. Any suggestions please ?

• Django deployment: PIL and virtualenv problem

  Hey guys, I'm deploying a Django site on my Vserver (Debian Lenny) and I'm having problem with PIL. I'm using virtualenv as well. When I'm in the virtualenv and type pip install -U PIL everything installs fine and I get this: *** TKINTER support not available --- JPEG support available --- ZLIB (PNG/ZIP) support available *** FREETYPE2 support not available *** LITTLECMS support not available And when I go in to the shell (python manage.py shell) and type from PIL import Image I get no error. But when I use it in the Django project (uploading an image in the admin for example) I just get No module named PIL I don't think it's a problem with the model because it works fine on the development machine but here is part of the class: class Category(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=255, verbose_name="Name") logo = models.ImageField(upload_to='images/category/', blank=True, null=True, verbose_name="Logo") I'm going out of my mind about this.   I wanted to use a python equivalent to piping some shell commands in perl. Something like the python version of open(PIPE, "command |"). I go to the subprocess module and try this: p = subprocess.Popen("zgrep thingiwant largefile", shell=True, stdout=subprocess.PIPE) This works for reading the output the same way I would in perl, but it doesn't clean itself up. When I exit the interpreter, I get grep: writing output: Broken pipe spewed all over stderr a few million times. I guess I had naively hoped all this would be taken care of for me, but that's not true. Calling terminate or kill on p doesn't seem to help. Look at the process table, I see that this kills the /bin/sh process, but leaves the child gzip in place to complain about the broken pipe. What's the right way to do this?

  I'm using ASP.NET MVC to develop a web application, deploying to IIS 7. I've hidden my Files and Views directories with web.config files in those directories (they just return a normal 404). However, I haven't been able to get the web.config method to work in hiding my bin directory. When I access www.mywebapp.com/bin, I instead get a too-revealing page with this message: HTTP Error 404.8 - Not Found The request filtering module is configured to deny a path in the URL that contains a hiddenSegment section. The page reveals part of my directory structure. I just want it to return my 404 page like the Files and Views directories do. How can I get this behavior?

• Graphviz DOT arrange Nodes in circles

  OK here's my problem, I'm generating a graph of a python module, including all the files with their functions/methods/classes. I want to arrange it so, that nodes gather in circles around their parent nodes, currently everything is on one gargantuan horizontal row, which makes the thing 50k pixels wide and also let's the svg converter fail(only renders about the half of the graph). I went trough the docs(http://www.graphviz.org/doc/info/attrs.html) but couldn't find anything that seems to do the trick. So the question is: Is there a simple way to do this or do I have to layout the whole thing by myself? :/

• Embedded Glassfish - logging

  Hi all, I have migrated from log4j to logback and also am transitioning to Glassfish from Jetty. I haven't updated my logback configuration from what I had used with Jetty and consequently am not seeing any logs being written. What logging provider should I use? Should I just do my configuration with the Glassfish loggers in domain.xml? <access-log rotation-interval-in-minutes="15" rotation-suffix="yyyy-MM-dd"/> <log-service file="${com.sun.aas.instanceRoot}/logs/server.log" log-rotation-limit-in-bytes="2000000"> <module-log-levels/> </log-service> These are the defaults in domain.xml. I'd like to split the longs up into several files as well as control log level for each package. I think I can figure out how to configure them, but should I use Glassfish logging or can I use logback? Walter
