  Our problem is this, we have a relational database to store objects in tables. As any relational database could, several of these tables have multiple foreign keys pointing to other tables (all pretty normal stuff) We've been trying to identify a solution to allow export of this relational data, ideally, only 1 of the objects in the model, to some sort of file (xml, text, ??). So it wouldn't be simple enough to just export 1 table as data stored in other tables would contribute to the complete model of the object. Something like the following picture: Toward this, i've written a routine to export the structure by following the foreign key paths which exports something similar to the following. <Tables> <TableA PK="1", val1, val2, val3> <TableC PK="1", FK_A="1", Val1, val2, val3> <TableC PK="2", FK_A="1", val1, val2, val3> <TableB PK="1", FK_A="1", FK_C="1", val1, val2, val3> <TableB PK="2", FK_A="1", FK_C="2", val1, val2, val3> <TableD PK="1", FK_B="1", FK_C="1", val1> <TableD PK="2", FK_B="2", FK_C="1", val1> </Tables> However, given this structure, it cannot be placed into a heirarchial format (ie D2 is a child of C1 and B2; and B2 is a child of C2) Which in turn, makes my life very difficult when trying to identify a methodology to reimport (and reKey) these objects. Has anybody done anything like this? how do you do it? are there tools or documentation on how this is best accomplished? Thanks for your help.

  Is there a way to notify a DependencyObject's bindinigs when the inner DependencyProperties have changed? But I also have a binding for a BackgroundDef instance, which should create a Brush and draw the background of a button (either a single color, or two gradient colors). My problem is that the two-way bindings for the DependencyProperties update the properties, but the binding for the class instance is not called, as apparently the entire object does not change. Any idea how I could call the bindings for the DependencyObject when the DependencyProperties are changed?

• How to sketch out an event-driven system?

  I'm trying to design a system in Node.js (an attempt at solving one of my earlier problems, using Node's concurrency) but I'm running into trouble figuring out how to draw a plan of how the thing should operate. I'm getting very tripped up thinking in terms of callbacks instead of returned values. The flow isn't linear, and it's really boggling my ability to draft it. How does one draw out an operational flow for an event-driven system? I need something I can look at and say "Ok, yes, that's how it will work. I'll start it over here, and it will give me back these results over here." Pictures would be very helpful for this one. Thanks. Edit: I'm looking for something more granular than UML, specifically, something that will help me transition from a blocking and object-oriented programming structure, where I'm comfortable, to a non-blocking and event driven structure, where I'm unfamiliar.

  Hi guys! so as title says, I would like to hear your advices what are the most important questions to consider and ask end-users before designing database for their application. We are to make database-oriented app, with special attenion to pay on db security (access control, encryption, integrity, backups)... Database will also keep some personal information about people, which is considered sensitive by law regulations, so security must be good. I worked on school projects with databases, but this is first time working "in real world", where this db security has real implications. • How to implement an offline reader writer lock

  Some context for the question All objects in this question are persistent. All requests will be from a Silverlight client talking to an app server via a binary protocol (Hessian) and not WCF. Each user will have a session key (not an ASP.NET session) which will be a string, integer, or GUID (undecided so far). Some objects might take a long time to edit (30 or more minutes) so we have decided to use pessimistic offline locking. Pessimistic because having to reconcile conflicts would be far too annoying for users, offline because the client is not permanently connected to the server. Rather than storing session/object locking information in the object itself I have decided that any aggregate root that may have its instances locked should implement an interface ILockable public interface ILockable { Guid LockID { get; } } This LockID will be the identity of a "Lock" object which holds the information of which session is locking it. Now, if this were simple pessimistic locking I'd be able to achieve this very simply (using an incrementing version number on Lock to identify update conflicts), but what I actually need is ReaderWriter pessimistic offline locking. The reason is that some parts of the application will perform actions that read these complex structures. These include things like Reading a single structure to clone it. Reading multiple structures in order to create a binary file to "publish" the data to an external source. Read locks will be held for a very short period of time, typically less than a second, although in some circumstances they could be held for about 5 seconds at a guess. Write locks will mostly be held for a long time as they are mostly held by humans. There is a high probability of two users trying to edit the same aggregate at the same time, and a high probability of many users needing to temporarily read-lock at the same time too. I'm looking for suggestions as to how I might implement this. One additional point to make is that if I want to place a write lock and there are some read locks, I would like to "queue" the write lock so that no new read locks are placed. If the read locks are removed withing X seconds then the write lock is obtained, if not then the write lock backs off; no new read-locks would be placed while a write lock is queued. So far I have this idea The Lock object will have a version number (int) so I can detect multi-update conflicts, reload, try again. It will have a string[] for read locks A string to hold the session ID that has a write lock A string to hold the queued write lock Possibly a recursion counter to allow the same session to lock multiple times (for both read and write locks), but not sure about this yet. Rules: Can't place a read lock if there is a write lock or queued write lock. Can't place a write lock if there is a write lock or queued write lock. If there are no locks at all then a write lock may be placed. If there are read locks then a write lock will be queued instead of a full write lock placed. (If after X time the read locks are not gone the lock backs off, otherwise it is upgraded). Can't queue a write lock for a session that has a read lock. Can anyone see any problems? Suggest alternatives? Anything? I'd appreciate feedback before deciding on what approach to take.

• How to manage and capture database changes across several developers?

  We have three developers and one tester all working against the same database. We change the schema of the database quite often, and every time we do it tends to have a ripple effect of headaches for everyone else. Are there good practices in place for .NET oriented development against MS SQL Server 2008 for managing this? I am thinking something similar to Rails Migrations and each dev and tester has their own local database. Or is that overkill? It'd at least be nice to have separate test and dev databases, but currently manually keeping two databases in sync is probably worse than our current predicament. LiquiBase seems promising, has anyone successfully used it in a similar environment? Or are there better approaches? We are using SQL Server 2008, VS 2008 and .NET 3.5 if that matters at all.

  I'm trying to make a program which creates a spaceship and I'm using the status() method to display the ship's name and fuel values. However, it doesn't seem to be working. I think I may have messed something up with the status() method. I'm also trying to make it so that I can change the fuel values, but I don't want to create a new method to do so. I think I've taken a horrible wrong turn somewhere in there. • Updating join fields in an ORM command

  I have a question about object relational updates on join fields. I am working on a project using codeigniter with datamapper dmz. But I think my problem is with general understanding of ORMs. So fell free to answer with any ORM you know. I have two tables, Goods and Tags. One good can have many tags. Everything is working, but I am looking for a way to merge tags. Meaning I decide I want to remove tag A and instead have everything that is tagged by it, now be tagged by tag B. I only have models for the goods and the tags. There is no separate model for the join relationship, as I believe these ORMs were designed to work. I know how to delete a tag. But I dont know how to reach into the join table to redirect the references since there is no model for the join table. I would rather use the ORM then issuing a raw SQL command.

• iPhone OS: Why is my managedModelObject not complying with Key Value Coding?

  Ok so I'm trying to build this stat tracker for my app and I have built a data model object called statTracker that keeps track of all the stuff I want it to. • Poor DB4O performance - What am I doing wrong?

  I read Rob Conery's post about Object databases and thought I'd give it a go. I have a class lets say Book with 15 properties mostly string, some int, one Datetime and 2 decimals. I used Rob's code to open the database file etc to test on a Winforms project not a Web project. So I did the following: for(int i = 0; i < 1000000; i++) { var Book = new Book(); //Assign variables s.Save(Book); } s.CommitChanges(); This took at least a couple of minutes. I then tried to retrieve all data to test speed: var spp = s.All<Passports>(); This one line was quick, however, then doing: sppp.Count() as well as a seperate test doing a foreach loop and incrementing a counter took a couple of minutes. This seems quite slow to me. Am I doing something wrong or am I expecting too much?

PopLess() must be resolved into something like PopLess tempObject.operator() which would be same as executing the operator () function on a temporary object. I see this as, passing the return value of overloaded operation i.e bool (as in my example) to sort algorithm. So then, How does sort function resolve the third parameter in this case? Question : 2 Question Do we derive any particular advantage of using function objects versus function pointer?   i want to fetch information from the database using objects. i really like this approach cause this is more OOP: $user = Doctrine_Core::getTable('User')->find(1); echo $user->Email['address']; echo $user->Phonenumbers[0]->phonenumber; rather than: $q = Doctrine_Query::create() ->from('User u') ->leftJoin('u.Email e') ->leftJoin('u.Phonenumbers p') ->where('u.id = ?', 1); $user = $q->fetchOne(); echo $user->Email['address']; echo $user->Phonenumbers[0]['phonenumber']; the problem is that the first one uses 3 queries (3 different tables), while the second one uses only 1 (and is therefore recommended technique). but i feel that it destroys the object oriented design. cause ORM is meant to give us an OOP approach so that we could focus on objects and not the relational database. but now they want us to go back to use SQL like pattern. there isn't a way to get information form multiple tables not using DQL? the above examples are taken from the documentation: doctrine

  I can marshal and unmarshal 1 object with no problems (in netbeans); I need to know how to do this with multiple objects? I can't generate anything but null pointer exceptions when trying to unmarshal 3 objects into an array from XML; so I don't even know if I've marshalled the 3 out correctly. I know the basic idea of declaring the object, then using the jaxbu or jaxbm command, but I'd like to see this working for more than one object. **TLDR: How do I marshal/unmarshal multiple objects of a single class into/out of XML??   Given a classes Foo, Bar which have hibernate mappings to tables Foo, A, B and C public class Foo { Integer aid; Integer bid; Integer cid; ...; } public class Bar { A a; B b; C c; ...; } I build a List fooList of an arbitrary size and I would like to use hibernate to fetch List where the resulting list will look something like this: Bar[1] = [X1,Y2,ZA,...] Bar[2] = [X1,Y2,ZB,...] Bar[3] = [X1,Y2,ZC,...] Bar[4] = [X1,Y3,ZD,...] Bar[5] = [X2,Y4,ZE,...] Bar[6] = [X2,Y4,ZF,...] Bar[7] = [X2,Y5,ZG,...] Bar[8] = ... Where each Xi, Yi and Zi represents a unique object. I know I can iterate fooList and fetch each List and call barList.addAll(...) to build the result list with something like this: List<bar> barList.addAll(s.createQuery("from Bar bar where bar.aid = :aid and ... ") .setEntity("aid", foo.getAid()) .setEntity("bid", foo.getBid()) .setEntity("cid", foo.getCid()) .list(); ); Is there any easier way, ideally one that makes better use of hibernate and make a minimal number of database calls? Am I missing something? Is hibernate not the right tool for this?

  Hi all, i have a question that's being around for several years. As all you know entity framework is an ORM tool that tries to model the database to an object oriented access model. All the samples I've seen are quering directly to the database tables. So, which is the role of the views in the database now?. The views were used to model the database in a more friendly way, that is, several physical tables, one logic table. This was great for example in hidding the complex relational model on stored procedures as queryng the views inside them was much easier than reproducing the query joins over and over on each stored procedure. So the question is, why is entity framework so good if stored procedures can not take benefit of it?

• (illustrator scripting) how to release objects to layers(sequence) but retain object's name?

  Hi, I've asked the same question to adobe scripting forum. but seems there are not many forum users there, and I'm asking the same question here. I was writing my first illustrator script to export all layers to png files with layer structure converted to file structure. I found there are many layers that my script can't detect and found out that they are not actually layers but objects(or groups). Found a layer menu (release to layers), but doesn't quite solve the problem perfectly. initially I have this layer 001 object 01 object 1 object 2 release to layers(sequence) on object 01 gives layer 001 layer 91(whatever the layer number illustrator gives when release to layers are performed) layer 92 object 1 layer 93 object 2 now I need to convert them to (so that layer can retain the name of the object) layer 001 layer 01 layer 1 object 1 layer 2 object 2 I have hundreds of layer 001, and couple thousands of object 01, and wonder if anything can be done with script to do this... If it's possible to detect object in a script, I could rewrite the 'release to layers' functionality in script maybe. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I am a C# guy trying to translate some of my OOP understanding over to php. I'm trying to make my first class object, and are hitting a few hitches. I am getting errors using when I use var, and I'm getting confused. I know I don't HAVE to use var, or declare the variables at all, but I feel it is a better practice to do so. the error is "unexpected T_VAR, expecting T_VARIABLE" When I simply remove var from the declarations it works. Why is this?

  Hi all, I'm very glad that i found this website recently, I've learned a lot from here. I'm from China, and my English is not so good. But i will try to express myself what i want to say. Recently, I've started learning about Domain Driven Design, and I'm very interested about it. And I plan to develop a Forum website using DDD. After reading lots of threads from here, I understood that persistence ignorance is a good practice. Currently, I have two questions about what I'm thinking for a long time. Should the domain object interact with repository to get/save data? If the domain object doesn't use repository, then how does the Infrastructure layer (like unit of work) know which domain object is new/modified/removed? For the second question. There's an example code: Suppose i have a user class: public class User { public Guid Id { get; set; } public string UserName { get; set; } public string NickName { get; set; } /// <summary> /// A Roles collection which represents the current user's owned roles. /// But here i don't want to use the public property to expose it. /// Instead, i use the below methods to implement. /// </summary> //public IList<Role> Roles { get; set; } private List<Role> roles = new List<Role>(); public IList<Role> GetRoles() { return roles; } public void AddRole(Role role) { roles.Add(role); } public void RemoveRole(Role role) { roles.Remove(role); } } Based on the above User class, suppose i get an user from the IUserRepository, and add an Role for it. IUserRepository userRepository; User user = userRepository.Get(Guid.NewGuid()); user.AddRole(new Role() { Name = "Administrator" }); In this case, i don't know how does the repository or unit of work can know that user has a new role? I think, a real persistence ignorance ORM framework should support POCO, and any changes occurs on the POCO itself, the persistence framework should know automatically. Even if change the object status through the method(AddRole, RemoveRole) like the above example. I know a lot of ORM can automatically persistent the changes if i use the Roles property, but sometimes i don't like this way because of the performance reason. Could anyone give me some ideas for this? Thanks. This is my first question on this site. I hope my English can be understood. Any answers will be very appreciated.

• How can you learn to design nice looking websites?

  I am a moderately capable web developer. I can put stuff where I want it to go and put some JQuery stuff in there if I need to. However, if I am making my own website (which I am starting to do) I have no idea how to design it. If someone was to sit next to me a point to the screen and say "put this picture there, text there" I can do that quite easily. But designing my own site with my choice of colours and text will look like a toddler has invented it. Does anyone know any websites/books I can look at or has anyone got any tips on the basics of non-toddler web design?
