• How to make VIM settings computer-dependent in .vimrc?

  I share my VIM configuration file between several computers. However, I want some settings to be specific for certain computers. For example, font sizes on the high-res laptop should be different to the low-res desktop. And more importantly, I want gVIM on Windows to behave more windowsy and MacVim on OSX to behave more maccy and gVIM on Linux to just behave like it always does. (That might be a strange sentiment, but I am very used to switch mental modes when switching OSes) Is there a way to make a few settings in the .vimrc machine- or OS-dependent?

• Blackberry Won't Sync: Says Processing

  I have a blackberry storm 2 and I have it set up to sync, just like I've done with all the other ones in the company. They pull the address book/contacts from outlook, and aren't synced to an exchange server. I have everything setup and then when I hit synchronize it flashes "processing" the phone shows it trying to sync and then it is done in less than a second. It did warn me that the computer was not supplying enough power to charge the device and it said that I should make sure the drivers are correct. Also, I was warned that the device might not function properly down in the bottom right hand corner. Any ideas? I've uninstalled and reinstalled the blackberry software off the disc.

• How long does badblocks take on a 1TB drive?

  I'm running badblocks (or rather "e2fsck -c") on a 1TB drive and if the progress indicator is any indication (no pun intended), it's going to take almost forever to complete. Right now it says 0.01% done, 30:20 elapsed which would mean the thing would take 17 weeks or so to complete, which seems rather excessive in my book. Is that a normal amount of time for such a check to take or it simply that my suspicions are correct in that the drive is failing, thus causing the check to take only slightly shorter than eternity? I found this question here, but that pertains to the amount of passes done.

  I found lots of Web sites and books explaining how memory management worked on the 8086 and later x86 CPUs in Real Mode. I understand, I think, how two 16 bit values, segment address and offset are combined to get a linear 20 bit physical address (shift segment four bits to the left, add offset; segments are 64K and start every 16 bytes). But I couldn't find any good Web sites or books that explained how memory management works in Protected Mode, specifically the differences between 80286 and 80386. Can anyone point me to a good Web site or book (or explain it right here)? (For extra credit, i.e. an upvote, how does it work in Long Mode?)

  I have a quick question but I've been struggling to find the best solution: I have two java webapps and wordpress (php) that I need to serve through my Prod website: App #1 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/ (this would have other url too such as "www.example.com/book") App #2 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/manage Finally WordPress would be accessed at www.example.com/info How can I configure apache to serve all these three instances at the same time? • Burn iTunes playlist to Audio Image

  I have Snow Leopard on an early model MacBook Pro. The CD Drive has been giving me fits the last few months -- I stick a blank CD in it, and it claims it's bad and spits it out. I can go through a pile of brand-new CD's and it will choose 1 out of 7 that it wants to use, even though all the CD's come from the same package. The rejected CD's work fine on a Linux machine I have. I need to burn an audio CD from iTunes and my thought was: Burn playlist to audio CD Image file (Red Book image?) Copy ISO file to Linux Machine Use Linux machine to burn audio image to a CD But looking around, it doesn't seem that iTunes on OSX will support this. I was wondering if anyone else has accomplished this.

• Is there a limit on the number of USB external drives?

  I've got three external HDDs, all My Books, 500 GB, 750 GB, and 1 TB. If I hook one or two of them up to a computer, everything seems fine. If I hook all three of them to a computer (I've tried this on two different computers, one running Windows XP, one running Windows Vista), the bootup time goes up by more than an order of magnitude. It can suddenly take about 10-20 minutes to boot the machine, whereas before it might take a minute. All three drives work fine on their own. I'm not using any kind of hub; all three are plugged directly into the machine. Is this associated with some kind of inherent limit in USB? Is this bad hardware design in the CPU box? Is this a My Book problem?

• Element.appendChild() hosed in IE .. workaround? (related to innerText vs textContent)

  I've heard that using el.innerText||el.textContent can yield unreliable cross-browswer results, so I'm walking the DOM tree to collect text nodes recursively, and write them into tags in the HTML body. What this script does is read hash substring valus from the window.location and write them into the HTML. This script is working for me in Chrome & Firefox, but choking in IE. I call the page with an URL syntax like this: http://example.com/pagename.html#dyntext=FOO&dynterm=BAR&dynimage=FRED UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE Solution: I moved the scripts to before </body> (where they should have been) then removed console.log(sPageURL); and now it's working in Chrome, Firefox, IE8 and IE9. This my workaround for the innerText vs textContent crossbrowser issue when you are just placing text rather than getting text.   i have a 3.5" western digital my book 500gb external hdd....i gave it to a friend of mine and he broke the usb port in it...i went to a nearby comp repair shop and had him solder the thing...it didnt detect when i plugged it in my dell inspiron laptop........i recently saw about the 3.5" sata to usb enclosure, so i went to check it....strangely when its placed in the enclosure, its not detecting in windows...also when it was put as secondary(im guessing slave) to the shop fellow's desktop it shows up in the bios and starting, but then again doesnt show in windows 7, and the guy told me i need to data recovery to get teh data back p.s.the wd hdd doesnt have os, just data, soo my question is: can i slave the drive to my dell laptop and try to recover the data....if so how? please i would really appreciate it...thanks in advance

  I have been using a Barracuda web filter 310 in our network and I have just had enough of it. It does not support trunking and we have several networks that have users that need to be web filtered. (I guess if everyone just did their flippin jobs I would not have this issue) but the management wants me to get it resolved. Does anyone know the top five web filters that are better than the barracuda web filters that support network trunking so that I can have multiple domains and subnets going through it? • Weird symbols on Mac

  Since I've had my mac, I keep seeing this weird symbol. Till today, it had been only in the place of bullet points in OpenOffice.org. The first pictures shows this in a .doc file created on a Windows system. I thought nothing of it - just an annoyance. It appears no matter what the font. Real bullets appear if I delete the text and insert a bulletted list using the toolbar. Then, today I noticed in in iTunes - which seemed strange. Image 3 is a zoom of the character. It says on it: Private Use E000 F8FF. What is it (unicode related?), and how do I get the bullets working properly? Edit: The plot thickens... If I boot in Safe Mode, the symbols look like little snap boards like you'd have at the beginning of filming a scene in a film...

• Problem with script to add/delete from database

  Ok - the user enters a product code, price and name using a form - the script then either adds it to the database or deletes it from the database. If the user is trying to delete a product that is not in the database they get a error message. Upon successful adding/deleting they also get a message. However, when I test it - I just get a blank page. Perl doesnt come up with any warnings, syntax errors or anything - says everything is fine... but I still just get a blank page.   I am editing a 96 chapter book. The text is in normal black letters on a white background. What I want to be able to do is: I want to have any changes or additions automatically shown in another (per-selected) color. Without having to a)high lite a word or phrase to be changed or added and then b)going to the toolbar and clicking on the font color In other words I want the original color of the text to remain as it is and any additions or changes to be visible in another color without having to use the toolbar. Can this be done? I use OpenOffice or Word 2007 in Windows 7.

• How to distill / rasterize a PDF in Linux

  We have a printer at our office that prints PDF files from a USB stick. It prints most files okay, but it has problems with some, especially ones generated with Latex. Some PDFs it simply refuses to print, some PDFs it prints with courier-type font, and some it prints fine except for equations. I'm looking for a way to "distill" PDFs into a dead-sure format to print. Either by simplifying / normalizing the PDF to the point that any renderer will render it correctly, or by simply making each page a 600dpi raster image in the PDF. (I could split the PDF into individual raster images and combine them manually, but I want something scriptable.) • Free tool to automatically deskew and crop PDF made up of scanned pages [closed]

  I have several PDFs made up of book pages' scans. The scans are made from two pages at a time and some of these scans are skewed, making text appear slightly tilted. I'm looking for a tool that could allow me to do an automatic optimization by deskewing the scans without losing readability. I've found the GPL software briss to crop the scans in order to have a 1:1 page ratio instead of 2:1, but I don't have any tool to deskew the pages. I stumbled upon unpaper, another open source tool that seems perfect for what I want to do, but that tool is Linux only and it doesn't work on PDF files directly. Any hint is appreciated. Thank you.

• Any good phone system on a Windows Environment ?

  Hello, I am looking for a phone system that integrate well with a (almost) 100% Microsoft. I would like something that can integrate with Exchange and Active Directory (in-phone searching/calling by name (is this possible using SIP ?), etc) and if possible something not too expensive (Bye bye Cisco !), what do you recommend me ? I've heard of 3CX as IPBX and Aastra as Phones, are they good for this ? Or do you know something else good at this ? I've also seen some Alcatel IP Phones doing this (search by name, but I think that was a separated address book and not loaded from AD/Exchange) Thank you !

• Screen rotation hot key (CTRL+ALT+UP) not responding, what's going on?

  The other day my son (11 months) discovered a new hot key combination on my laptop. As I'm sure many of you are aware (I wasn't until the other day), on machines with Intel Graphics, pressing CTRL+ALT+{any arrow key} rotates the screen. After I recovered from my shock, and did a little sideways Googling to figure out how to fix it, I decided this might actually be useful. I read a lot of online documentation, and it fits better on the screen when it's rotated. Since it's a laptop, I hold the machine like a book and read it. It worked great all afternoon yesterday. But today at work I tried to show a friend this new trick, using the same laptop, and found that the CTRL+ALT+UP no longer works. I can rotate it to any orientation but the normal one. I'm guessing something else is intercepting this hot key, but what could be doing this?

  Is there any good documentation out there explaining how to setup Corporate Error Reporting (CER) on Windows 7? I found some information in Advanced Windows Debugging but the book targets Windows XP and things have changed quite a bit since then. I could not find any tutorials on the Internet/MSDN either. To give a bit of background information, I work for a company with 25 employees and I would like to send crash reports to a local server so that I can analyze what causes our tools to crash. I think I need to know two things: Setting up a Corporate Error Reporting server. Setting up computer to send error reports to our Corporate Error Reporting server.
