• What's Microsoft's strategy on Windows CE development?

  Lots of specialized mobile devices use Windows CE or Windows Mobile. I'm not talking about smart phones here -- I know that Windows Phone 7 is Microsoft's current technology of choice here. I'm talking about barcode readers, embedded devices, industry PDAs with specialized hardware, etc... the kind of devices (Example 1, Example 2) where Windows Phone Silverlight development is not an option (no P/Invoke to access the hardware, etc.). Since direct Compact Framework support has been dropped in Visual Studio 2010, the only option to develop for these device currently is to use outdated development tools (VS 2008), which already start to cause trouble on modern machines (e.g. there's no supported way to make the Windows Mobile Device Emulator's network stack work on Windows 7). Thus, my question is: What are Microsoft's plans regarding these mobile devices? Will they allow native applications on Windows Phone, such that, for example, barcode reader drivers can be developed that can be accessed in Silverlight applications? Will they re-add "native" Compact Framework support to Visual Studio and just haven't found the time yet? Or will they leave this niche market?

• Naming conventions: camelCase versus underscore_case ? what are your thoughts about it? [closed]

  I've been using underscore_case for about 2 years and I recently switched to camelCase because of the new job (been using the later one for about 2 months and I still think underscore_case is better suited for large projects where there are alot of programmers involved, mainly because the code is easier to read). Now everybody at work uses camelCase because (so they say) the code looks more elegant . What are you're thoughts about camelCase or underscore_case p.s. please excuse my bad english Edit Some update first: platform used is PHP (but I'm not expecting strict PHP platform related answers , anybody can share their thoughts on which would be the best to use , that's why I came here in the first place) I use camelCase just as everibody else in the team (just as most of you recomend) we use Zend Framework which also recommends camelCase Some examples (related to PHP) : Codeigniter framework recommends underscore_case , and honestly the code is easier to read . ZF recomends camelCase and I'm not the only one who thinks ZF code is a tad harder to follow through. So my question would be rephrased: Let's take a case where you have the platform Foo which doesn't recommend any naming conventions and it's the team leader's choice to pick one. You are that team leader, why would you pick camelCase or why underscore_case? p.s. thanks everybody for the prompt answers so far

• Team Foundation Server 2012 Build Global List Problems

  My experience with the upgrade and use of TFS 2012 has been very positive. I did come across a couple of issues recently that tripped things up for a while. ISSUE 1 The first issue is that 2012 prior to Update 1 published an invalid build list item value to the collection global list. In 2010, the build global list, list item value syntax is an underscore between the build definition and the build number. In the 2012 RTM this underscore was replaced with a backslash, which is invalid.  Specifically, an upload of the global list fails when the backslash is followed at some point by a period. The error when using the API is: <detail ExceptionMessage="TF26204: The account you entered is not recognized. Contact your Team Foundation Server administrator to add your account." BaseExceptionName="Microsoft.TeamFoundation.WorkItemTracking.Server.ValidationException"><details id="600019" http://schemas.microsoft.com/TeamFoundation/2005/06/WorkItemTracking/faultdetail/03"http://schemas.microsoft.com/TeamFoundation/2005/06/WorkItemTracking/faultdetail/03" /></detail> when uploading the global list via the process editor the error is: This issue is corrected in Update1 as the backslash is changed to a forward slash. ISSUE 2 The second issue is that when upgrading from 2010 to 2012, the builds in 2010 are not published to the 2012 global list.  After the upgrade the 2012 global lists doesn’t have any builds and only builds run in 2012 are published to the global list. This was reported to the MSDN forums and Connect. To correct this I wrote a utility to pull all the builds and recreate the builds global list for each project in each collection.  This is a console application with a program.cs, a globallists.cs and a app.config (not published here). The utility connects to TFS 2012, loops through the collections or a target collection as specified in the app.config. Then loops through the projects, the build definitions, and builds.  It creates a global list for each project if that project has at least one build. Then it imports the new list to TFS.  Here’s the code for program and globalists classes. • Connecting the Dots (.NET Business Connector)

  Recently, one of my colleagues was experimenting with Reporting Server on DAX 2009, whenever he used to view a report in SQL Server Reporting Manager he was welcomed with an error: “Error during processing Ax_CompanyName report parameter. (rsReportParameterProcessingError)” The Event Log had the following entry: Dynamics Adapter LogonAs failed. Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.BusinessConnector.Session.Exceptions.FatalSessionException at Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.BusinessConnector.Session.DynamicsSession.HandleException(Stringmessage, Exception exception, HandleExceptionCallback callback) We later found out that this was due to incorrect Business Connector account, with my past experience I noticed this as a very common mistake people make during EP and Reporting Installations. Remember that the reports need to connect to the Dynamics Ax server to run the AxQueries., which needs to pass through the .NET Business Connector. To ensure everything works fine please note the following settings: 1) Your Report Server Service Account should be same as .NET Business Connector proxy account. 2) Ensure on the server which has Reporting Services installed, the client configuration utility for Business Connector points to correct proxy account. 3) And finally, the AX instance you are connecting to has Service account specified for .NET business connector. (administration –> Service accounts –> .NET Business Connector) These simple checkpoints can help in almost most of the Business Connector related  errors, which I believe is mostly due to incorrect configuration settings. However, I am quite worried about being able to write large scale applications with it. For example, how would I go about using MVP pattern with this framework ? For now, I have not been able to not make presentation concerns leak into the view because of the lack of some kind of "data binding". I have code that looks like this : Shoes.app do @view = SampleView.new @presenter = SamplePresenter.new @view @label = para @view.sample_property button "Update sample_property" do @presenter.update_sample_property end end Here, the call to @presenter.update_sample_property updates @view.sample_property but the label is not updated accordingly. For this to work, I would have to make @presenter.update_sample_property to return a string, and then call @label.text = return_value, but I think that would violate the MVP principle of not having presentation logic in the view. I'm used to work in .Net with the MVP pattern so I don't know if the pattern applies correctly to Shoes like I tried to do. Are there any ressources out there for making non-trivial apps with Shoes ? Especially using the MVP pattern or something similar ? EDIT : I took a look at the shoebox to see what other people have achieved with the framework. Though I did not look through it extensively, at first sight it seems like they are all simple projects with no real purposes.

  As you may have seen from the PeopleTools 8.52 Release Value Proposition , PeopleTools intends to introduce a new search capability in release 8.52. We believe this feature will not only improve the ability of users to find content, but will fundamentally change the way people navigate around the PeopleSoft ecosystem. PeopleSoft applications will be delivering this new search in coming releases and feature packs. PeopleSoft Application Search is actually a framework—a group of features that provides an improved means of searching for a variety of content across PeopleSoft applications. From a user experience perspective, the new search offers a powerful, keyword-based search presented in a familiar, intuitive user experience. Rather than browsing through long menu hierarchies to find a page, data item, or transaction, users can use PeopleSoft Application Search to directly navigate to desired locations. We envision this to be similar to how people navigate across the internet. This capability may reduce or even eliminate the need to navigate PeopleSoft applications using the existing application menu system (though menus will still be available to people that prefer that method). The new search will be available at any point in an application and can be configured to span multiple PeopleSoft applications. It enables users to initiate transactions or navigate to key information without using the PeopleSoft application menus. In addition, filters and facets will enable people to narrow their search results sets, making it easier to identify and navigate to desired application content. Action menus are embedded directly in the search results, allowing users to navigate straight to specific related transactions – pre-populated with the selected search results data. PeopleSoft Applications Search framework uses Oracle’s Secure Enterprise Search as its search engine. Most Customers will benefit from the new search when it is delivered with applications. However, customers can start deploying it after a Tools-only upgrade. In this case, however, customers would have to create their own indices and implement security.

  Finally the last CTP and pre-release version for the Composite Services is out. There were quite a lot of changes since CTP1. We added many new samples and many enhancements to the repository (DB) which is now called Inventory in sync with SOA Patterns. Here is a brief list of the main changes according to the included documentations.   Changes and additions in this release This CTP release contains reusable source code and samples to illustrate implementation for the following patterns and scenarios: Repair and Resubmit – this pattern is implemented in ESB Toolkit 2.0 as part of Exception Management Framework (EMF). This code drop provides code sample how to implement this pattern for Windows AppFabric workflow service, using Exceptions Web Service and workflow activities to create fault message, which will be created in EMF database.  Analytic Tracing – this code drop contains reusable code and samples for implementing ETW tracing: event collector service and database that store collected events. This capability may be used for scenarios that need flexibility on how collected events are decoded and processed via extensibility points you can configure and implement:  plugins and event decoders with leveraging ETW tracing capabilities provided by the event collector service.   Inventory Centralization – this code drop contains service catalog database, web services and samples to show how to implement Metadata Centralization, Schema Centralization and Policy Centralization patterns.  Service Virtualization – we included sample for implementing this pattern using WCF routing service( which is part of .NET framework) and service metadata centralization capabilities to define routing service metadata in service catalog. • SO-overflow induced passivity - how to cope?

  After not really working on my pet project for a while, I discovered Stackoverflow and upon perusing it more intensely I was quite amazed. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so when I found eye-openers here highlighting many of the mistakes I made, I first wanted to fix everything. However, it's a pet project for a reason: I'm self-taught and I'm studying psychology, so programming skills can never become priority one (though it often helps, even in this field). Issues that stuck out were numerous security issues (e.g. CSRF-prevention and bcrypt eluded me) not object-oriented (at least the PHP part, the JS-part mostly is) no PHP framework used, so many of my DIY takes on commonly-tackled components (auth, ...) are either bad or inefficient really poor MySQL usage (no prepared statements, mysql extension, heard about setting proper indices two days ago) using mootools even though JQuery seems to be fashionable, so there's more probably always going to be better integration with services I'd like to use (like google visualization) So, my SO-induced frenzy turned into passivity. I can't do it all (soon) in the rather small amount of spare time I can spend on working on my project. I can leave some of the issues be in good conscience (speed stuff: an unfinished & unpublished project will never become popular, right?). No clear conscience without good security though and if I don't use a framework for auth and other complex stuff I'll regret having to do it myself. One obvious answer would probably be going open-source, but I think the project would need to become more impressive before others would commit to it. I can't afford to employ someone either. I do think the project deserves being worked on, though. How should I tackle it anyway? What's the best practice for little-practice people?

• Identity in .NET 4.5&ndash;Part 1: Status Quo (Beta 1)

  .NET 4.5 is a big release for claims-based identity. WIF becomes part of the base class library and structural classes like Claim, ClaimsPrincipal and ClaimsIdentity even go straight into mscorlib. You will be able to access all WIF functionality now from prominent namespaces like ‘System.Security.Claims’ and ‘System.IdentityModel’ (yay!). But it is more than simply merging assemblies; in fact claims are now a first class citizen in the whole .NET Framework. All built-in identity classes, like FormsIdentity for ASP.NET and WindowsIdentity now derive from ClaimsIdentity. Likewise all built-in principal classes like GenericPrincipal and WindowsPrincipal derive from ClaimsPrincipal. In other words, the moment you compile your .NET application against 4.5,  you are claims-based. That’s a big (and excellent) change.   While the classes are designed in a way that you won’t “feel” a difference by default, having the power of claims under the hood (and by default) will change the way how to design security features with the new .NET framework. I am currently doing a number of proof of concepts and will write about that in the future. There are a number of nice “little” features, like FindAll(), FindFirst(), HasClaim() methods on both ClaimsIdentity and ClaimsPrincipal. This makes querying claims much more streamlined. I also had to smile when I saw ClaimsPrincipal.Current (have a look at the code yourself) ;) With all the goodness also comes a number of breaking changes. I will write about that, too. In addition Vittorio announced just today the beta availability of a new wizard/configuration tool that makes it easier to do common things like federating with an IdP or creating a test STS. Go get the Beta and the tools and start writing claims-enabled applications! Interesting times ahead!

  I'm developing web application using PHP with CodeIgniter MVC framework with a huge real time client-side functionality needs. This is my first time to build large scale of client-side app. So I combine the PHP with a large scale of Javascript modules in one project. As you already know, MVC framework seperate application modules into Model-View-Controller. My concern is about View layer. I could be display the data on the DOM by PHP built-in script tag by load some data on the Controller. Otherwise I could use AJAX to pulled the data -- treat the Controller like a service only -- and display the them by Javascript. • I Admit I Misspoke

  OK.  I admit it.  The last post I hade mentioned that we moved the XAF DSL to the Entity Framework.  This has caused a lot of confusion.  I meant to say that we have used the ADO.NET Entity Data Model extensions.  This is the design surface that can be tailored to create Entity Framework. We leveraged the code generation within the ADO.NET Entity Data Model (EDMX) file to generate XAF/XPO classes.  This allows you to visually create the entity model, set a few XAF properties and then generate the business objects from there.  I am presenting all these topics at the Kansas City Developers Conference on June 19th.  I will post the presentation after the conference.  I have a full presentation that will demonstrate the power of the ADO.NET Entity Data Model extensions, create a small project and then add the OData layer to XAF to connect to the PowerPivot in Excel 2010. • Making an AI walk on a NavigationMesh (2D/Top-Down game)

  For some time I have been working on a framework which should make it possible to generate 2D levels based on a set of rules specified by level designers. I decided to implement a NavigationMesh in the generated levels as I already have that information to start with. Consider the following image (borrowed from http://www.david-gouveia.com/pathfinding-on-a-2d-polygonal-map/): When I run A* on the NavigationMesh, the red path would be suggested when I want to go from point A to B (either direction). However, I don't want my AI to walk that path directly and clipping corners, I'd rather want them to follow the more logical black path. How would I go about going from the Red path to the Black path, are there any algorithms for this. Which steps do I take? Is A* the proper solution for this at all? For some additional information: The proof-of-concept game is a 2D top-down game written in C#, but examples/references in any language are welcome!

• Loading the Cache from the Business Application Server

  By default, the Web Application server will directly connect to the Database to load its cache at startup time. Customers, who implement the product installation in distributed mode, where the Web Application Server and Business Application Server are deployed separately, may wish to prevent the Web Application Server to connect to the database directly. Installation of the product in distributed mode was introduced in Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2. In the Advanced Web Application Server configuration, it is possible to set the Create Simple Web Application Context (WEBAPPCONTEXT) to true to force the Web Application Server to load its cache via the Business Application rather than direct loading. The value of false will retain the default behavior of allowing the Web Application Server to connect directly to the database at startup time to load the cache. The value of true will load the cache data via direct calls to the Business Application Server, which can cause a slight delay in the startup process to cater for the architecture load rather than the direct load. The impact of the settings is illustrated in the figure below:                             When setting this value to true, the following properties files should be manually removed prior to executing the product: $SPLEBASE/etc/conf/root/WEB-INF/classes/hibernate.properties $SPLEBASE/splapp/applications/root/WEB-INF/classes/hibernate.properties Note: For customers who are using a local installation, where the Web Application Server and Business Application Server are combined in the deployed server, it is recommended to set this parameter to false, the default, unless otherwise required. This facility is available for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 in Group Fix 3 (via Patch 11900153) and Patch 13538242 available from My Oracle Support.
