• Problem running mysql client, cannot connect to mysql server

  Edit3: Thanks for the help everyone. Sorry for wasting anybody's time, but it seems like a simple reboot solved it. I should've known better, but I just had the assumption that the "restart" solution is mostly valid just for MS Windows (no offense). I'll keep this in mind before I ask a question here again. I installed the mysql-client-5.0 and mysql-server-5.0 packages on Ubuntu 8.04, using sudo apt-get install. When I try to run the "mysql" command, I get the following error: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) To verify that mysql server is running, I tried this, and it does seem to be running, with the correct socket too: $ ps aux | grep mysql root 13388 0.0 0.0 1772 528 ? Note that I'm completely new to mysql. Edit: As requested in comments, the exact command that is returning the error is simply "sudo mysql". • configuring vsftpd anonymous upload. Creates files but freezes at 0 bytes

  vsftpd on ubuntu after sudo apt-get install vsftpd Then did configuration as in the attached /etc/vsftpd.conf file. Anonymous ftp allows cd to the upload directly and allows put myfile.txt which gets created on the server but then the client hangs and never proceeds. The file on the server remains at 0 bytes. • BING Search using ASP.NET and jQuery Ajax

  The BING API provides extremely simple way to make search queries using BING. It provides nice way to get the search results as XML or JSON. In this blog post I will show one simple example on how to query BING and get the results as JSON in an ASP.NET website with help of jQuery’s getJSON ajax method. Basically we submit an HTTP GET request with the AppID which you can get in the BING Developer Center. To create new AppID, click here. Once you fill the form, submit it and you will get your AppID. Now, lets make this work in several steps. 1. Open VS.NET or Visual Web Developer.NET, create new sample project (or use existing one) and create new ASPX Web Form with name of your choice. 2. Add the following ASPX in your page body <body>     <form id="form1" runat="server">     <asp:TextBox ID="txtSearch" runat="server" /> <asp:Button ID="btnSearch" runat="server" Text="BING Search" />     <div id="result">          </div>     </form> </body> We have text box for search, button for firing the search event and div where we will place the results. 3. We get the keywords from the Text Box with id txtSearch and then we use encodeURIComponent. The encodeURIComponent is used to encode the special characters such as: , / ? : @ & = + $ #, which might be part of the search query string. Then we construct the URL and call it using HTTP GET. The callback function returns the data, where we first clear the html inside div with id result and after that we render the data.SearchResponse.Web.Results array of objects using template with id bingSearchTemplate and append the result into div with id result. 9. Some are combined to create hyperlinked URLs. 10. THE END RESULT   As you see, it’s quite simple to use BING API and make search queries with ASP.NET and jQuery. • nginx starts up before apache

  I've been fumbling through setting up redmine on a unbuntu (12.04) box and somewhere along the line NginX got set up and now apache no longer loads because nginx has already grabbed the port. I tried removing NginX with the below command but that didn't seem to make any difference. When I restarted the server and pointed my web browser I still got the "Welcome to NginX" message sudo apt-get purge nginx I have confirmed that NginX is gone because when I run the above now I get as an output Package nginx is not installed, so not removed Yet everytime I start the machine it is running again.   How install ImageMagic 6.6.2 on Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) Problem that lucid have old ImageMagic version(6.5.2) Its very important because me need work with SVG grafics, In my local pc I have ubuntu 11.04 and ImageMagic 6.6.2 and all work fine, In server I have 6.5... and I have problem. Reinstall ubuntu to 11.* this is no solution. I tried change /etc/apt/source.list from ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) to list from ubuntu 11.04 (natty) and update ImageMagic. After this action I have ImageMagic 6.6.2 (I looked phpinfo()) but ImageMagick is not work now. If I try do any action I get error: [error] 8996#0: *19983 FastCGI sent in stderr: "PHP Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'ImagickException' with message 'no decode delegate for this image format `/tmp/magick-XXnYKWKC' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/532' How it fix? • Sendmail in Nexenta core 3.0.1

  I'm trying to setup sendmail in Nexenta core 3.0.1 (Solaris based OS). All I want is to be able to send emails from that host - like notifications about failures, cron jobs output etc. Initially Nexenta core doesn't have sendmail so here is what I've done: apt-get install sunwsndmu Now there is a sendmail in /usr/sbin/sendmail. When I try to send email from command line: $mail maxim test . • Oracle Solaris: Zones on Shared Storage

  Oracle Solaris 11.1 has several new features. At oracle.com you can find a detailed list. One of the significant new features, and the most significant new feature releated to Oracle Solaris Zones, is casually called "Zones on Shared Storage" or simply ZOSS (rhymes with "moss"). ZOSS offers much more flexibility because you can store Solaris Zones on shared storage (surprise!) so that you can perform quick and easy migration of a zone from one system to another. This blog entry describes and demonstrates the use of ZOSS. ZOSS provides complete support for a Solaris Zone that is stored on "shared storage." In this case, "shared storage" refers to fiber channel (FC) or iSCSI devices, although there is one lone exception that I will demonstrate soon. The primary intent is to enable you to store a zone on FC or iSCSI storage so that it can be migrated from one host computer to another much more easily and safely than in the past. With this blog entry, I wanted to make it easy for you to try this yourself. I couldn't assume that you have a SAN available - which is a good thing, because neither do I! What could I use, instead? [There he goes, foreshadowing again... -Ed.] Developing this entry reinforced the lesson that the solution to every lab problem is VirtualBox. Oracle VM VirtualBox (its formal name) helps here in a couple of important ways. It offers the ability to easily install multiple copies of Solaris as guests on top of any popular system (Microsoft Windows, MacOS, Solaris, Oracle Linux (and other Linuxes) etc.). It also offers the ability to create a separate virtual disk drive (VDI) that appears as a local hard disk to a guest. This virtual disk can be moved very easily from one guest to another. In other words, you can follow the steps below on a laptop or larger x86 system. Please note that the ability to use ZOSS to store a zone on a local disk is very useful for a lab environment, but not so useful for production. I do not suggest regularly moving disk drives among computers. In the method I describe below, that virtual hard disk will contain the zone that will be migrated among the (virtual) hosts. In production, you would use FC or iSCSI LUNs instead. The zonecfg(1M) man page details the syntax for each of the three types of devices. Why Migrate? Why is the migration of virtual servers important? Some of the most common reasons are: Moving a workload to a different computer so that the original computer can be turned off for extensive maintenance. Moving a workload to a larger system because the workload has outgrown its original system. If the workload runs in an environment (such as a Solaris Zone) that is stored on shared storage, you can restore the service of the workload on an alternate computer if the original computer has failed and will not reboot. You can simplify lifecycle management of a workload by developing it on a laptop, migrating it to a test platform when it's ready, and finally moving it to a production system. Concepts For ZOSS, the important new concept is named "rootzpool". You can read about it in the zonecfg(1M) man page, but here's the short version: it's the backing store (hard disk(s), or LUN(s)) that will be used to make a ZFS zpool - the zpool that will hold the zone. This zpool: contains the zone's Solaris content, i.e. the root file system does not contain any content not related to the zone can only be mounted by one Solaris instance at a time Method Overview Here is a brief list of the steps to create a zone on shared storage and migrate it. The next section shows the commands and output. You will need a host system with an x86 CPU (hopefully at least a couple of CPU cores), at least 2GB of RAM, and at least 25GB of free disk space. (The steps below will not actually use 25GB of disk space, but I don't want to lead you down a path that ends in a big sign that says "Your HDD is full. Good luck!") Configure the zone on both systems, specifying the rootzpool that both will use. The best way is to configure it on one system and then copy the output of "zonecfg export" to the other system to be used as input to zonecfg. This method reduces the chances of pilot error. (It is not necessary to configure the zone on both systems before creating it. You can configure this zone in multiple places, whenever you want, and migrate it to one of those places at any time - as long as those systems all have access to the shared storage.) Install the zone on one system, onto shared storage. Boot the zone. Provide system configuration information to the zone. (In the Real World(tm) you will usually automate this step.) Shutdown the zone. Detach the zone from the original system. Attach the zone to its new "home" system. Boot the zone. The zone can be used normally, and even migrated back, or to a different system. Details The rest of this shows the commands and output. The two hostnames are "sysA" and "sysB". Note that each Solaris guest might use a different device name for the VDI that they share. I used the device names shown below, but you must discover the device name(s) after booting each guest. In a production environment you would also discover the device name first and then configure the zone with that name. Fortunately, you can use the command "zpool import" or "format" to discover the device on the "new" host for the zone. The first steps create the VirtualBox guests and the shared disk drive. I describe the steps here without demonstrating them. Download VirtualBox and install it using a method normal for your host OS. You can read the complete instructions. Create two VirtualBox guests, each to run Solaris 11.1. Each will use its own VDI as its root disk. Install Solaris 11.1 in each guest.Install Solaris 11.1 in each guest. To install a Solaris 11.1 guest, you can either download a pre-built VirtualBox guest, and import it, or install Solaris 11.1 from the "text install" media. If you use the latter method, after booting you will not see a windowing system. To install the GUI and other important things, login and run "pkg install solaris-desktop" and take a break while it installs those important things. Life is usually easier if you install the VirtualBox Guest Additions because then you can copy and paste between the host and guests, etc. You can find the guest additions in the folder matching the version of VirtualBox you are using. You can also read the instructions for installing the guest additions. To create the zone's shared VDI in VirtualBox, you can open the storage configuration for one of the two guests, select the SATA controller, and click on the "Add Hard Disk" icon nearby. Choose "Create New Disk" and specify an appropriate path name for the file that will contain the VDI. The shared VDI must be at least 1.5 GB. Note that the guest must be stopped to do this. Add that VDI to the other guest - using its Storage configuration - so that each can access it while running. The steps start out the same, except that you choose "Choose Existing Disk" instead of "Create New Disk." Because the disk is configured on both of them, VirtualBox prevents you from running both guests at the same time. Identify device names of that VDI, in each of the guests. Solaris chooses the name based on existing devices. The names may be the same, or may be different from each other. This step is shown below as "Step 1." Assumptions In the example shown below, I make these assumptions. The guest that will own the zone at the beginning is named sysA. The guest that will own the zone after the first migration is named sysB. On sysA, the shared disk is named /dev/dsk/c7t2d0 On sysB, the shared disk is named /dev/dsk/c7t3d0 (Finally!) When that is done, you should see the output shown next.   Just transferred my site from a shared hosting to Linode's VPS, and I'm also completely new to nginx, so please don't be harsh if I missed something evident ^^ I've got my WordPress site running pretty well on nginx & MaxCDN, but my @font-face fonts (served from cdn.domain.com) stopped working in IE9 and FF (@font-face failed cross-origin request. Resource access is restricted.)   I am running WordPress in a subfolder of my domain for testing and development purposes on a VPS LEMP-stack. In order to password-protect the wp-login.php with an etxra layer, I used HTTP authentication for the wp-admin folder. The problem is that the http authentication is ignored. When the wp-login.php or wp-admin-folder is called, it goes directly to the normal WordPress-login. • Mysql Cluster not working on Ubuntu

  I am unable to setup MySQL Cluster on ubuntu servers. As a starting point I started from the link but I am not successful and the tar ball version I download is 6.3.45. As I wanted to test the mysql cluster, the Data node and SQL node are same but sql never appeared as connected in management node console and it looks like below. [ndbd(NDB)] 2 node(s) id=2 @192.168.1.107 (Version: version number, Nodegroup: 0, Master) id=3 @192.168.1.108 (Version: version number, Nodegroup: 0) [ndb_mgmd(MGM)] 1 node(s) id=1 @192.168.1.105 (Version: version number) [mysqld(API)] 2 node(s) id=4 (not connected, accepting connect from 192.168.1.107) id=5 (not connected, accepting connect from 192.168.1.108) On all the 3 machines mysql-server & client(apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client) were already installed and I completely stopped and also removed them at the system start up. Now the mysqld is from extracted cluster tar ball(/usr/local/mysql/support-files/mysql.server). As for testing, I created a test database on both the data nodes but the tables are also not syncing on other node. I checked many links, configurations are remained similar in all the links but somewhere it's going wrong. Anymore extra package is required?, Could anyone help me here..?. I am trying this for past 3 days... Thank you!

(Even i restarted the pc) When I go to the site1.com, It will say The connection has timed out Error Message. But I can browse via localhost/site1.com. I have been trying since last two days. No solution. And followed many articles and videos.

  I have two linode VPS accounts and I want to back up one onto the other (the reasons are mainly for fun and to practice server administration.) the short version Duplicity isn't even asking for my password, but immediately says "invalid SSH password" (but I can ssh into the other server). why? the long version When I run duplicity /home/me scp://[email protected]//root/backup I get Invalid SSH password Running 'sftp [email protected]' failed (attempt #1) Invalid SSH password Running 'sftp [email protected]' failed (attempt #2) Invalid SSH password Running 'sftp [email protected]' failed (attempt #3) And it says Invalid SSH password immediately with no opportunity for me to actually type the password. When I type duplicity full -v9 --num-retries 4 /home/me scp://[email protected]//root/backup I get Main action: full Running 'sftp [email protected]' (attempt #1) State = sftp, Before = 'Connecting to 97.107.129.67... [email protected]'s' State = sftp, Before = '' Invalid SSH password Running 'sftp [email protected]' failed (attempt #1) I can ssh into [email protected] fine, and in fact have the ip in known_hosts before I tried any of this. serer 1 (from which I'm running the duplicity command) is Linode's default Ubuntu 8 setup with only a handful of programs installed via apt-get. server 2 (represented by x.x.x.x) is literally only Linode's default Ubuntu 8 setup I previously tried using SystemImager -- would that have changed settings in a destructive way? (I have removed and rebooted since then) Isn't Duplicity supposed to prompt for password? Am I using it wrong? are there common mistakes/dependencies I need to know about? Is there any way that x.x.x.x could be setup that could make this not work (I used Linode's default Ubuntu 8 setup and barely )?

  I'm trying to install mod_mono on Apache 2 (Prefork MPM). I'm using Ubuntu Karmic, and just want an auto-hosting setup (so that any .aspx files are executed, similar to how PHP is normally setup). I did the following to install Mono: $ apt-get install libapache2-mod-mono mono-apache-server2 mono-devel $ a2dismod mod_mono $ a2enmod mod_mono_auto I've confirmed that mod_mono is getting loaded by Apache. However, any .aspx pages I try to load are returned unprocessed and still have an application/x-asp-net MIME type. It's as if the mod_mono handler never gets registered with Apache. Here's the contents of /etc/mod_mono_auto.load: LoadModule mono_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_mono.so And here's /etc/mod_mono_auto.conf: MonoAutoApplication enabled AddType application/x-asp-net .aspx AddType application/x-asp-net .asmx AddType application/x-asp-net .ashx AddType application/x-asp-net .asax AddType application/x-asp-net .ascx AddType application/x-asp-net .soap AddType application/x-asp-net .rem AddType application/x-asp-net .axd AddType application/x-asp-net .cs AddType application/x-asp-net .config AddType application/x-asp-net .dll DirectoryIndex index.aspx DirectoryIndex Default.aspx DirectoryIndex default.aspx I've even tried setting the handler explicitly: AddHandler mono .aspx .ascx .asax .ashx .config .cs .asmx .asp Nothing seems to help. • Which Ubuntu-like Linux OSs work well on a flash drive?

  I want a Linux OS that I can load on a flash drive, but I don't want to relearn an entire operating system. I want to know which tiny Linux installations are most like Ubuntu. For example, I'd like to use the apt-get package manager, the Gedit text editor, and the bash shell. I'd like to use something that's already popular, stable, and highly compatible, but it needs to fit comfortably in one gig of my four-gig flash drive (just the essentials; I'll use the remaining three gigs to store installed programs and files). I have no preference for window managers; I just want something small and fast that works like Ubuntu. What is the most popular Ubuntu-like OS that can be easily run on a thumb drive? Edit: I'm not sure I understand how this works. I don't to use a USB drive as a LiveCD; I want to plug in a USB stick and use the computer as if it was my own. In other words, I want to be able to install programs on the drive on one computer and use them on another. Do any of these OSs let me do that? Please forgive my ignorance.

• 500 error with deploying rails application via apache2+passenger

  I finally completed my own app, so the only work left is deploying the app. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and apache2(installed by apt-get), so I'm trying to deploy through passenger. I installed passenger gem like this: sudo gem install passenger rvmsudo passenger-install-apache2-module and I configured apache settings as what the installation message says. I added below lines in the middle of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file. LoadModule passenger_module /home/admin/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194/gems/passenger-3.0.17/ext/apache2/mod_passenger.so PassengerRoot /home/admin/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194/gems/passenger-3.0.17 PassengerRuby /home/admin/.rvm/wrappers/ruby-1.9.3-p194/ruby and, I appended below lines in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default file. <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName localhost # !!! Be sure to point DocumentRoot to 'public'! DocumentRoot /home/admin/homepage/public <Directory /home/admin/homepage/public> # This relaxes Apache security settings. AllowOverride all # MultiViews must be turned off. Options -MultiViews </Directory> But when I restart the apache service and hit the address, 500 error occurs. At first, it was same 500 error but the 500 error page is from apache's, but when I reinstalled the libapache2-module-passenger, the 500 error page is changed to that from rails'. Because of rails' 500 error page(which is located at public/500.html), I think passenger module is properly connected with apache. What should I do to fix this problem? Do I need to configure something inside my app before deployment?

• Problem building PHP extension module

  I'm trying to get GD into my PHP. So I compiled it, made php.ini point to it, restarted apache etc. But no GD. So in apache error log it says PHP Warning: PHP Startup: gd: Unable to initialize module\nModule compiled with module API=20060613\nPHP compiled with module API=20090115\nThese options need to match\n in Unknown on line 0 So a bit of googling says I should not use the phpize I have before configuring and making these. I should use a new one called phpize5. I surely don't have any such thing. Unless its packed up inside something else in my php5.3. distro. Where do you get it. In Ubuntu I could just run sudo apt-get install php-dev, (apparently) and it would just appear by magic. At least that's what the webpage said. Unfortunately I am running MacOSX version Leopard. How can I build this GD module so that it will match the API number in my PHP?
