  I've written before (as have others) about the dangers of an "either/or" mentality with various technologies, including the "cloud". Companies are starting to understand this message - I've been traveling a lot this year from Alaska to California, from the UK to Copenhagen, Denmark, talking with companies that are implementing Hybrid systems, and giving presentations on how to implement one. I'm doing another of these Monday of next week, in Boston here in the US. • Images from remote source - is it possible or is really a bad practice?

  I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries that I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since images might need good deals of space depending on how much images a user uploads an so on, I thought on using cloud services like dropbox, mega and google drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem is that for me this seems a useless solution because it would be slow to download the images from the remote source, making the user experience not so good. Is there any way to save images of a image gallery on remote source without getting the user experience bad because of speed? Or this is really not a good practice?

Our team has released first several versions of Server Auditor which is now just a SSH terminal with special UI approach for touch devices and got quite good feedbacks, e.g. iOS and Android. Now we are thinking about adding extra features to make Server Auditor a tool number one for all system administrators and would like to know your opinion. Main question would you use a tool like Server Auditor with extra features described below: Fast problem fixing - preloaded recipes/snippets, e.g. clean logs, restart a process, reboot etc. Secure user data synchronisation(IP/DNS name, connection options, keys, snippets) across all your devices iPhone and Android. Built-in tools like ping, traceroute, whois System status integration - you can observe information about the system in a friendly way, e.g CPU load, hard drive and RAM usage etc. Monitoring tool integration. Your servers are watched by our Nagios-like system in the cloud and you get notified by push-notifications/SMS. Similar products are Server Density, CopperEgg. • Web hosting deciding to pay for hosting or host your own?

  Is there a guide out there on how to choose when to pay for web hosting vs. hosting your own? Assuming that root access is a must I would like to compare things like cost, scalability and personal stress. Here is what I could come up with. Paying for web hosting: Benefits: Much cheaper for a small scale. I assume anything under $50 a month would be cheaper than paying for the bandwidth of hosting. No stress in dealing with power outages, server restarts or internet going down. For the most part less busy work involved with setting up. Negatives: Cost goes way up when higher specs are needed (for example monthly cost triples with ability to use 8gb of ram that you can buy for $90 ). This means you have to target a particular ram usage and monitor so your instance stays within the threshold. root access for the most part is a premium. You may get tied into a vendor specific deployment process. Hosting on own : Positives: 100% control of specs and software. When you get past paying for the bandwidth you get much more bang for your buck by building your own machine. Negatives: Doesn't make financial sense if bandwidth costs are more than web hosting costs. Having to deal with power outages, server restarts or internet going down. I think the best of both worlds would be if there was a place that dealt with bandwidth, power outages and server restarts but you provided your own server. Kind of like a 24 hour day care for a server. Does anything like that exist?

  I have a personal website and just realized that the display is very different between Firefox (tested 19.0.2 and 25) and Chrome 30.0.1599.101 m Firefox display (this is how I intended it to look. In Chrome & IE9.0 the DIVs all seem to stagger on their own..... ? Im just an amateur and this is my personal blog for fun, Ive never had to troubleshoot a rendering issue like this one. Not sure how to go about doing it? Can Firebug help with determining where layout is inherited from? I have sample HTML if needed but didn't want to cloud up the questions a wall of text.
