• VIM with iA Writer type formatting?

  I've been Googling for a while now. I would like to have iA Writer-like (or a bit like StackExchange) formatting in Vim. Since I love the way it formats my texts, but I'm constantly pressing "w" to skip words because my experience with Vim. I would love to be able to have the same smart formatting in Vim. I did found a nice Vim plugin for getting Vim to toggle to big and clean font: https://github.com/honza/writer.vim But this still does not enable me to use the formatting: # Header 1 ## Header 2 *underline* **strong** etc... Besides all this above, I would not mind to have Vim like shortcuts in my iA writer app if it would not be possible to implement iA formatting in Vim. Edit: After a while of even more searching, I found out this type of formatting is called Markdown. I am starting to think there isn't really a good way to directly edit a Markdown file in Vim, because Vim is not able to make things display like that? I would really like to be able to use the movement shortcuts in combination of the nice formatting of Markdown and how it is displayed in iA Writer.

  In Linux, what's the best way to delegate administration responsibilities for Apache and other "applications"? File permissions? Sudo? A mix of both? Something else? At work we have two tiers of "administrators" Operating system administrators. These are your run-of-the-mill "server administrators." They are responsible for just the operating system. Application administrators. The people who build the web site. This includes not only writing the SQL, PHP, and HTML, but also setting up and running Apache and PostgreSQL or MySQL. The aforementioned OS admins will install this stuff, but it's mainly up to the app admins to edit all the config files, start and stop processes when needed, and so on. I am one of the app admins. This is different than what I am used to. I used to just write code. The sysadmin took care not only of the OS but also installing, setting up, and keeping up the server software. But he left. Now I'm in charge of setting up Apache and the database. The new sysadmins say they just handle the operating system. It's no problem. I welcome learning new stuff. But there is a learning curve, even for the OS admins. Apache, by default, seems to be set up for administration by root directly. All the config files and scripts are 644 and owned by root:root. I'm not given the root password, naturally, so the OS admins must somehow give my ordinary OS user account all the rights necessary to edit Apache's config files, start and stop it, read its log files, and so on. Right now they're using a mix of: (1) giving me certain sudo rights, (2) adding me to certain groups, and (3) changing the file permissions of various directories, to make them writable by one of the groups I'm in. This never goes smoothly. There's always a back-and-forth between me and the sysadmins. They say it's ready. Then I try certain things, and half of them I still can't do. So they make some more changes. Then finally I seem to be independent and can administer Apache and the database without pestering them anymore. It's the sheer complication and amount of changes that make me uncomfortable. Even though it finally works, more or less, it seems hackneyed. I feel like we're doing it wrong. It seems like the makers of the software would have anticipated this scenario (someone other than root administering it) and have a clean two- or three-step program to delegate responsibility to me. But it feels like we are really chewing up the filesystem and making it far and away from the default set-up. Any suggestions? Are we doing it the recommended way? P.S. For PostgreSQL it seems a little better. Its files are owned by a system user named postgres. So giving me the right to run sudo su - postgres gives me just about everything. I'm just now getting into MySQL, but it seems to be set up similarly. But it seems a little weird doing all my work as another user.

• Good support to multiple desktops AND multiple monitors in Linux (Ubuntu)?

  I'm starting to have A LOT of opened windows in my machine. Sometimes within a project, I have e-mail/task management/personal e-mail/twitter, and a lot of different opened applications/terminal in my Linux environment. Nowadays I have 4 worspaces: Corporate management (e-mail) and corporate messenger; Work (Documents, Requisites) Dev (Development, All gVim windows, terminal and Firefox for development) Personal (Personal stuff: personal e-mail, delicious, twitter and so on) Sometimes it would be interesting to have different workspaces to projects instead of this configuration I have nowadays that are classes of work (bad name, I know, but I think you got the idea). I'm starting to think about using two monitors: one with Corporate Management, Work and Personal. The second monitor is only the development state: each workspace here is about a project being worked on instead of groups of works like before. A workspace may be implementing different classes for example. My question is: I just want to change to a second monitor using the mouse. I want to still be able to change workspaces in the same monitor using keyboard shortcuts. The keyboard shortcuts wouldn't change monitors, just worskpaces on the same monitor. Does Linux (Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx) support this envisioned setup? If so, how?

• Windows 7 Account Settings Vanished

  So I came home and stumbled upon a bit of a mystery. When I got home my brother was using my desktop PC that was running Windows 7 (I have accounts for my 2 brothers and my mom on the machine, but mine is the only admin account). After he finished his game he logged out and I logged in to my account, but found only strangeness. My windows account seems to have been somewhat "reset", meaning: my quick launch shortcuts were gone my dropbox account did not automatically login my pidgin accounts were no longer there I had to relogin Steam iTunes could not launch (I had hooked up my iDevice before logging in) The Documents/Pictures/Music shortcuts in the start menu no longer work However, despite that: my desktop wallpaper was still correct my documents folder was still there in c:\Users\my account name\My Documents as expected Google Chrome settings seem to have been retained other accounts on the same machine seem to be fine I asked my brother if he had installed anything strange during the day, he only installed Yahoo Messenger. I last used the machine around 24 hours ago and it was fine then. I'm not sure what else has been affected. I'm inclined to just create a new admin user for me to use, but I'd like to have some idea of what actually happened.

• Programação paralela no .NET Framework 4 – Parte I

  Introdução O avanço de tecnologia nos últimos anos forneceu, a baixo custo, acesso  a workstations com inúmeros CPUs. Facilmente encontramos hoje máquinas clientes com 2, 4 e até 8 núcleos, sem considerar os “super-servidores” com até 36 processadores :) Da wikipedia: A Unidade central de processamento (CPU, de acordo com as iniciais em inglês) ou o processador é a parte de um sistema de computador que executa as instruções de um programa de computador, e é o elemento primordial na execução das funções de um computador. Este termo tem sido usado na indústria de computadores pelo menos desde o início dos anos 1960[1]. A forma, desenho e implementação de CPUs têm mudado dramaticamente desde os primeiros exemplos, mas o seu funcionamento fundamental permanece o mesmo. Fazendo uma analogia, seria muito interessante delegarmos tarefas no mundo real que podem ser executadas independentemente a pessoas diferentes, atingindo desta forma uma  maior performance / produtividade na sua execução. A computação paralela se baseia na idéia que um problema maior pode ser dividido em problemas menores, sendo resolvidos de forma paralela. Este pensamento é utilizado há algum tempo por HPC (High-performance computing), e através das facilidades dos últimos anos, assim como a preocupação com consumo de energia, tornaram esta idéia mais atrativa e de fácil acesso a qualquer ambiente. No .NET Framework A plataforma .NET apresenta um runtime, bibliotecas e ferramentas para fornecer uma base de acesso fácil e rápido à programação paralela, sem trabalhar diretamente com threads e thread pool. Esta série de posts irá apresentar todos os recursos disponíveis, iniciando os estudos pela TPL, ou Task Parallel Library. Task Parallel Library A TPL é um conjunto de tipos localizados no namespace System.Threading e System.Threading.Tasks, a partir da versão 4 do framework. A partir da versão 4 do framework, o TPL é a maneira recomendada para escrever código paralelo e multithreaded. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd460717(v=VS.100).aspx Task Parallelism O termo “task parallelism”, ou em uma tradução live paralelismo de tarefas, se refere a uma ou mais tarefas sendo executadas de forma simultanea. Considere uma tarefa como um método. A maneira mais fácil de executar tarefas de forma paralela é o código abaixo: Parallel.Invoke(() => TrabalhoInicial(), () => TrabalhoSeguinte()); O que acontece de verdade? Por trás nos panos, esta instrução instancia de forma implícita objetos do tipo Task, responsável por representar uma operação assíncrona, não exatamente paralela: public class Task : IAsyncResult, IDisposable É possível instanciar Tasks de forma explícita, sendo uma alternativa mais complexa ao Parallel.Invoke. var task = new Task(() => TrabalhoInicial()); task.Start(); Outra opção de instanciar uma Task e já executar sua tarefa é: var t = Task<int>.Factory.StartNew(() => TrabalhoInicialComValor());var t2 = Task<int>.Factory.StartNew(() => TrabalhoSeguinteComValor()); A diferença básica entre as duas abordagens é que a primeira tem início conhecido, mais utilizado quando não queremos que a instanciação e o agendamento da execução ocorra em uma só operação, como na segunda abordagem. Data Parallelism Ainda parte da TPL, o Data Parallelism se refere a cenários onde a mesma operação deva ser executada paralelamente em elementos de uma coleção ou array, através de instruções paralelas For e ForEach. A idéia básica é pegar cada elemento da coleção (ou array) e trabalhar com diversas threads concomitantemente.   This is what I think about Microsoft Windows Phone. If Microsoft were in our shoes looking at various phones available their configurations, memory, front facing cameras etc. Microsoft disappointed the USA customer base again by not getting Nokia Lumia 800. The Past: If we talk few years ago, few business people were on their Blackberry’s and few Gadget lovers were on crappy Windows OS devices. The world was all going right till Apple came with a revolutionary device iPhone, which completely changed our perception towards phone and how great a smartphone can be. It’s not just phone but the whole technology industry. The romantic appealing of the phone and smooth touch and feel of it made everyone to get one of those bad boys. The sales went up for not just Apple for AT&T too. Even though everyone complained about the signal strength of AT&T, everyone wanted to be on it because they have iPhones. All world wanted iPhone back then except Microsoft with few comments on how it is not going to be in market. But it did great and rocked the industry. A few years later with iPhone and Android taking over the smartphone market Microsoft realized that it should be in the game too. Worked on the design of it, and gave us the best Mobile OS ever. Everyone thinks that iOS is a great OS for phones but if you have touched a Windows Phone and use it for real then you will realize the strengths of it. so last year we welcomed Windows Phone 7 The Present : Windows Phone 7 has the fastest growing market. The phones are cheap, you can buy from any carrier out there. The phone became smarter and smarter with the recent update “Mango (7.5)” and with the collaboration with Nokia, Microsoft created a new eco-system for smartphones with the best smartphone hardware and best smartphone software. Everyone in the world was excited about the collaboration. As we fly over cloud 9 imagining about Nokia made Windows Phones we all heard a good news from Nokia “Nokia World”. Nokia showed the world what a best hardware making company can do with Windows Phone 7.5 OS. Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 took the spotlight. Everyone here in USA and all over the world wanted to own a Nokia Lumia 800 because of the design, software, proprietary apps from Nokia (maps, ESPN, drive and music). If USA market had Nokia Lumia 800, then it would have been the best step Microsoft and Nokia had ever made in their history of smartphone market. With all the numbers going to Android and IPhone, its not clear on why Microsoft/Nokia did not release Lumia 800 here in USA. Its unclear if Microsoft had learnt the lesson or not. if it had learnt the lesson I guess Microsoft needs to get the Nokia Lumia 800 to the USA. The Future: This is where we hope we get the best form Microsoft. I was an iPhone user, I used 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4 and then moved to Windows Phone and never felt so happy with my iPhones’. From the day when Nokia announced the partnership with Microsoft and said that they going to come up with a new Nokia windows phone, I was dreaming for my Nokia Phone. but looks like it is not going to happen any time soon. My thoughts about the Market :  Nokia has the biggest market base in the world. Even though people moved to Android or iPhone over the years in other parts of the world like India and China, people still love to use Nokia. Everyone who uses a Windows Phone now will wait for that day when Nokia Lumia comes to the USA but what either or both of the companies should do for a better market share is to make a very aggressive move with the hardware and bet on the devices. I am pretty sure that it will work. everyone here in the USA will like to have a dual core windows phone with front facing camera and all other crazy things that android/apple phones offer. • Ubuntu 10.04 and fedora 14 grub conflict

  I tried to triple boot Windows xp, Fedora 14 and Ubuntu 10.04. I first installed Windows xp, then fedora followed by Ubuntu. The problem is that i don't get option to boot Ubuntu while Xp boots fine. It seems Ubuntu was unable to replace Fedora's grub with its own at MBR. Looking at their grub conf file, Fedora and Ubuntu identifies same harddisk as two different devices and i do have another 80 GB harddisk which doesn't have any OS. Below is the details on my partitions and partial information from grub files of both OS. • GridView row remove and animation - Android

  I have a GridView in which each row has a custom view. The grid view adapter has an array that keeps the custom view. At click of a button, I want to remove a specific row from the Grid and while doing so I want animation on it. I have an AnimationListener. When I remove the upper most row from the array and setAdapter in onAnimationEnd(). It works perfectly fine. But, when I remove any other row, it gives a NullPointerException in the main thread. The new TOS from Apple and their iPhone 4 OS: 3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited). Titanium uses JavaScript but is not executed be the iPhone OS WebKit engine directly. In their Developer blog, Jeff Haynie says Titanium is on the clear, but I don't know if they are in denial. It’s our belief that we are fully in compliance with iPhone OS 4.0 ToS as we interpret them. I haven't found any official word by Apple, only opinions. And I'm quite confussed. I'm not writing another line of code for my App until... you know.

• Macbook Pro - Randomly sleeps and won't wake up

  All, I have a Macbook Pro 13" (mid 2009) that has had a long time issues which seems to be getting worse. Occasionally, I will go to wake the computer with the keyboard and can't wake it. The HDD spins up, the light on the front of the computer stops blinking, but as soon as it seems like the display should light up, the HDD stops and the light begins blinking again. More rarely, the computer will suddenly sleep while I am using it and then enters the same sleep loop. The only way to resume working on the computer is to wait. Doing a hard restart just puts it right back into the 'sleep loop.' • SIGABRT error when running on iPad

  Hello, all. I've been banging my head for a few hours because of this problem. I have a universal project that's a mix of iPhone and iPad projects. I put these codebases together into the universal project and, after a lot of "#if __IPHONE_OS_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED >= 30200" checks, got the project to run in both the iPhone (OS 3.0 to 3.1.3) and iPad simulators. After doing a more finagling with the project settings of external libraries that I load, I got the app to load on an iPhone (which runs OS 3.1.3). However, when I run the app on my iPad, I get an immediate SIGABRT error. I've tried running it under Debug, under Release, with Active Architecture of both armv6 and armv7. I've checked and double-checked that the app has the right nib files set up (but, again, this app runs fine in the simulator). I've gone through the external libraries I'm using and set them up to have the same base SDK (3.2), same architectures (Optimized (armv6 armv7)), the same targeted device family (iPhone/iPad), and the same iPhone OS deployment target (iPhone OS 3.0). So, to summarize... I have a universal app that works in the simulator for iPhone and iPad, runs on an actual iPhone, but doesn't run on an iPad. It doesn't get far on the iPad -- there's an immediate SIGABRT error that stops execution. Help??

  Hello, I have two keyboard languages, Swedish and Amerikan English. Normally, I switch language by hitting [alt]+[shift] and it works like a charm. However, suddenly Microsoft Outlook has started to hang whenever I try to switch keyboard input language. Whenever i hit [alt]+[shift] or use the menu to switch language Outlook will hang indefinitely not responding. Why? and what can I do about it? I have English Windows 2000 and Outlook 2003 with the Google Search Desktop plugin.

• Sending ctrl-backslash from Windows to Linux using Synergy

  I'm using Synergy+ to share the keyboard and mouse between a Windows and a Linux (Red Hat) PC. The Windows box is the server, Linux is the client, and both are running version 1.3.4. My Windows box is set up for English UK keyboard. In a Linux terminal window, Ctrl+\ (backslash) sends a quit signal to the currently running program - useful to kill a Python script that's run amok, for example. When I try to do this via synergy, Ctrl+- (minus) is sent instead. This has the undesired effect of resizing my terminal window :( Backslash on its own and Shift-backslash = pipe both work fine. Any ideas what's happening?

• Is there a good XP like windows explorer for windows Vista?

  I'm still refusing to go to Windows Vista and now Windows 7 mainly due to the windows explorer, I find it cumbersome and hard to use exclusively with a keyboard. I use XP file explorer in the most basic view, the address bar at the top and files always in list view underneath. The reason I do this is because I'm almost blind and do everything from the keyboard and don't touch the mouse whilst navigating through files, this is because I can type "L[ENTER]D[Enter]B[Enter]" and know that I'm in "c:\documents and settings\Brett Ryan", and I can hit [Tab] once to go to the address bar to type in a folder. Can anyone suggest a replacement for windows explorer that brings back this basic navigational behavior?
