• Problems in exporting terrain from autodesk 3ds

  i am trying to make small counter strike sort of game and for the terrain part i have exported the terrain in 3ds format from Autodesk 3ds-max and imported the same in opengl using lib3ds. Its working fine but with few problems: The terrain is mainly made up of some cubical boxes with texture on them and placed on a big flat surface with boundary wall. In opengl i have enabled anti aliasing but still there is too much aliasing on the boundaries (visible when rotating the camera). I have tiled the floor with some image but in opengl it is just the single image stretched over the complete surface. I have exported animated model (Skelton+mesh+material+animation) from 3ds and used cal3d library for reading the same. Model has a gun also which is not appearing in opengl and it too has too much of aliasing problem. I have googled around but couldn't find any relevant solutions. Thanks in advance

• How can I solve display glitches and poor performance with ATI fglrx driver on my ThinkPad X100e?

  I noticed that video performance on my Thinkpad X100e was very poor compared to Windows 7, so I installed the ATI fglrx proprietary drivers by using the "Additional Drivers" dialogue box. The system has an ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3200 chip. The result of installing the drivers is pretty devastatingly negative, with symptoms such as skewed content in windows, browser tabs and text boxes failing to refresh when their content changes. In fact, please excuse typos in this post, because I can't really see what I am typing. :) I also notice that HD video playback performance is no better - perhaps even worse - than prior to installing the drivers. Example of what I see: Here's the output of fglrxinfo: display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. • No Window Options in Cairo Dock

  I'm not even sure how to describe this properly. I'm running Cairo Dock on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I've noticed that I no longer have the top bar of my windows. I mean, I have the bar itself, but it's empty aside from the name of the window and the close / resize boxes. For instance, a simple Nautilus window would have, when you move the cursor to the top bar, a list of options such as View / Edit etc. I have nothing like that for any window or application. It's just solid black. This is a huge problem and I'm not sure what the issue is. Has anyone else experienced this?

• How do I determine the draw order in an isometric view flash game?

  This is for a flash game, with isometric view. I need to know how to sort object so that there is no need for z-buffer checking when drawing. This might seem easy but there is another restriction, a scene can have 10,000+ objects so the algorithm needs to be run in less than O(n^2). All objects are rectangular boxes, and there are 3-4 objects moving in the scene. What's the best way to do this? He presents the following classes in the application service layer: CalendarApplicationService.java CalendarEntryApplicationService.java CalendarEntryQueryService.java CalendarQueryService.java I'm interested to know if an application will have a search page that feature numerous drop downs and check boxes with a smart text box to match different search patterns; How will you structure all that search logic? In a command service or a query service? Taking a look at the CalendarQueryService.java I can see that it has 2 methods for a huge query, but no logic at all to mix and match any search filters for example. I've heard that the application layer shouldn't have any business logic, so where will I construct my dynamic query? or maybe just clutter everything in the Query service?

• Was it necessary to build this site in ASP.NET ?

  From what I'm told, the whole StackOverflow/StackExchange 'stack' is based on Microsoft's ASP.NET. SO and the SE sites are probably the most complex that I visit on a regular basis. There's a lot going on in every page - lots of different boxes, pulling data from different places and changing dynamically and responding to user interaction. And the sites work very smoothly, despite the high traffic. My question is, could this have been achieved using a different platform/framework? Does ASP.NET lend itself to more complex projects where other web frameworks would strain and falter? Or is the choice pretty incidental?

• High Usage of RAM by wxPython's GUI and need some advice to reduce it

  I've recently developed a GUI in wxPython for windows platform. It contains a five tabs, 4 of them are just richTextCtrl boxes and the other one has controls for uploading files, buttons, textctrls, a slider etc.. As I was new to GUI development in Python, I used wxFormBuilder to generate some of the code using a good amount of sizers. So, now the problem is that the GUI starts off with a initial memory of around 40MB which is too much for such a simple application (Or so I think) . Also, when the functions handling the functions use huge lists as the program is for debugging large data logs and identifying the problems in'em implying that I can't afford memory for GUI. So, how can I reduce that start working memory size? Is it a general issue in wxPython? And currently trying use profilers but not sure if it's going to help.

• Is it a bad idea to run SELinux and AppArmor at the same time?

  My corporate policy says that Linux boxes must be secured with SELinux (so that a security auditor can check the 'yes, we're extremely secure!' checkbox for each server). I had hoped to take advantage of Ubuntu's awesome default AppArmor security. Is it unwise to run both Apparmor and SELinux? (If so, can this bad idea be mitigated with some apparmor and/or selinux tweaks?) • Good floor planner program?

  I'm planning to have a house built. I want to draw up some sketches on the computer, so I am looking for a program that can help me do this. It doesn't have to be a professional architecture tool; in fact that would be too complicated just yet (but maybe later on, for the detailed work...?). A simpler tool would be better. Features should include such things as ability to draw and move walls (not just using simple boxes), calculate room/floor area, add windows and doors, and the like. That's why Inkscape or OOo Presentation won't do. On Windows, a friend would just download a cracked professional architecture tool but that is not what I want to do. Suggestions?

• Collisions between moving ball and polygons

  I know this is a very typical problem and that there area a lot of similar questions, but I have been looking for a while and I have not found anything that fits what I want. I am developing a 2D game in which I need to perform collisions between a ball and simple polygons. The polygons are defined as an array of vertices. I have implemented the collisions with the bounding boxes of the polygons (that was easy) and I need to refine that collision in the cases where the ball collides with the bounding box. The ball can move quite fast and the polygons are not too big so I need to perform continuous collisions. I am looking for a method that allows me to detect if the ball collides with a polygon and, at the same time, calculate the new direction for the ball after bouncing in the polygon. (I am using XNA, in case that helps)

  Is there a well-known way (or perhaps reusable bit of code) for pixel-perfect collision detection in XNA? I assume this would also use polygons (boxes/triangles/circles) for a first-pass, quick-test for collisions, and if that test indicated a collision, it would then search for a per-pixel collision. This can be complicated, because we have to account for scale, rotation, and transparency. The chart itself seems to have a lot of boxes marked unknown, so if you are comfortable updating it on Wikipedia, that could be great too. • Linear search vs Octree (Frustum cull)

  I am wondering whether I should look into implementing an octree of some kind. I have a very simple game which consists of a 3d plane for the floor. There are multiple objects scattered around on the ground, each one has an aabb in world space. Currently I just do a loop through the list of all these objects and check if its bounding box intersects with the frustum, it works great but I am wondering if if it would be a good investment in an octree. I only have max 512 of these objects on the map and they all contain bounding boxes. I am not sure if an octree would make it faster since I have so little objects in the scene.

• How can I force the (re)discovery of PulseAudio network sound devices?

  I'm using the PulseAudio feature of network sound devices (not Multicast/RTP) to play sound from my netbook on the audio equipment connected to the HTPC when at home. This creates a virtual sound device that I can then use instead of the physical built-in one. Most of the time this works just fine. Sometimes however, the virtual sound device just doesn't appear. Disconnecting from and reconnecting to the network helps sometimes but not always and it's annoying and potentially bad for existing TCP connections. So my question basically is: Is there some way to tell PulseAudio "Hey, just look again if you really can't find a network sound device."? Edit: Unloading and reloading the module-zeroconf-discover with pacmd does not help either and it doesn't appear to be an avahi problem per se since avahi-browse -t --all | grep PulseAudio shows lots of right-looking stuff, even when the devices aren't listed in pavucontrol or pacmd list-sinks. Edit 2: I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 on both boxes for all the difference it might make.

• No windows whatsoever after compiz reset

  Currently using 12.04. This time I was trying to use the application switcher, and it asked me to resolve a few conflicts most of which were not easy to comprehend. So after some yes and no dialogue boxes leading me nowhere, I thought a reset should set things fine. However, after preferences-reset to default, I can't see any window!! NONE whatsoever except the log out one when I press ctrl+alt+del All I can see is the wallpaper and the mouse pointer. I cant even see the terminal or anything when I press alt+f2. I am posting this when I switch to ubuntu 2d (I cant make out the difference between the two, but this just works for now almost the same way)

• MVC helper functions business logic

  I am creating some helper functions (mvc.net) for creating common controls that I need in almost every project such as alert boxes, dialogs etc. If these do not contain any business logic and it's just client side code (html, js) then it's ok. My problem arises when I need some business logic behind this helper. I want to create a 'rate my (web) application' control that will be visible every 3 days and the user may hide it for now, navigate to rate link or hide it for ever. To do this I need some sort of database access and a code that acts as business logic. Normally I would use a controller for this, with my DI and everything, but I don't know where to put this code now. This should be placed in the helper function or in a controller that responds objects instead of ActionResults?

• How do I install Java?

  I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I recently installed openjdk-jre6 because one of the websites I use requires java for me to log in. Unfortunately, even after installing openjdk-jre6, I am not able to use the website. In place of 2 text boxes where I am supposed to enter my username and password, it simply shows a message "click here to download plugin". I am using Firefox by the way. I even tried to install java by clicking on that message. But it says "Java Runtime Environment not available". And then gives me a button to install java manually. But I would rather install it from the repo's. Could someone please tell me, what I should do to get Firefox to take note of the openjdk-jre6 that I have already installed?

• Text box select issue

  I have this issue where the entire text in text boxes is selected whilst I'm typing in it. For example, in FireFox search box I'd try to type "foo" but end up with "o" because I managed to type "fo" before everything was selected, and then typed "o" which replaced the "fo". When it happens, it is incessant - not just a one-off. But it doesn't happen all the time, and I haven't managed to figure out what causes it to start and stop. Is this a known problem with an easy solution? EDIT: this has nothing to do with touchpad. I get this occasionally even on a machine without one. I can usually rectify the issue just be alt-tabbing about a few times.

A competitor is called "Box Maker" Can I target the keywords: "box maker" if my company is selling a tool to help you make boxes? Or is that disallowed? Would "Box Maker" the company be able to file a complain on Google? Would it go anywhere? The term 'box maker' gets a lot of searches and is an incredibly cost effective search to target
