• RoR app running on mongrel development but not production

  Hello all, This is my first stab at Ruby on Rails. Just deployed a very simple app to Heroku. The thing is that my app runs flawlessly on mongrel development; When I run it with "mongrel_rails start -e production" however, I get the error "We're sorry, but something went wrong." For the life of me, I couldn't debug this. Heroku logs is not returning anything, the Exceptional addon in Heroku is not returning anything, and I cannot find mongrel.log on my Windows machine (when I run mongrel using: mongrel_rails start -e production -d" I'm using Rails 2.3.5 and sqlite3 with bundler to pack my gems. I was told that probably rails is not booting up correctly. I can't find any other way to diagnose this. Any ideas? Thanks, ANaimi

• Silverlight datagrid don't show any data with anonymous query RIA services

  Hi all! I have an anonymous linq query that I bind to a datagrid, when I debug it brings alright the data but it doesn't show in the datagrid, I suspect that the request to RIA services isn't completed before I bound it to the datagrid. I could use the LoadOperation<() Completed event. But it only works with Defined Entities so how can I do that? • Exporting Eclipse project with a reference to native library

  I have an Eclipse project, that uses JMF, I found out I could skip the JMF installation process and still to use the CaptureDeviceManager of the JMF, and to receive the list of devices if I could point my project to the native lib of the JMF. I've managed to add the native lib to the IDE run/debug, but once I export the application to an external runnable Jar, the application cannot find the native lib. the files are located in c:\JMF*.dll I tried to add the folder path to the environment variable in windows - didn't work. I tried to add them into another Jar and add it to the project - didn't work. I tried to add the files into the project - didn't work. I tried to add the path to the class path - didn't work. I tried to add the path to the library path - didn't work. does someone have any sort of a solution? Thanks in advance, Adam Zehavi.

• django: ajax view structure

  I want to know the correct way to structure ajax views in django. say i do something like : def foo_json(request): if is.ajax(): # return JSON here and make it available as a resource at something like '/foo/data/'.. all is fine.. but if I point the browser at '/foo/data/' .. obviously I get an error (debug) like: app.views.foo_json didn't return an HttpResponse object. so... my question is: Whats the best way structure this kind of view? ..should I return an HTTP response code ..maybe 404 / 405 ... or something else? - not sure of the best way to handle this, any advice appreciated :)

• Thoughts on try-catch blocks

  What are your thoughts on code that looks like this: public void doSomething() { try { // actual code goes here } catch (Exception ex) { throw; } } The problem I see is the actual error is not handled, just throwing the exception in a different place. I find it more difficult to debug because i don't get a line number where the actual problem is. So my question is why would this be good? ---- EDIT ---- From the answers it looks like most people are saying it's pointless to do this with no custom or specific exceptions being caught. That's what i wanted comments on, when no specific exception is being caught. I can see the point of actually doing something with a caught exception, just not the way this code is.

• Auto update CSS from SASS/SCSS in Rails?

  Maybe I'm confused on how SASS/SCSS works within Rails (2.3.8.) but I was under the impression that if I included the option Sass::Plugin.options[:always_update] = true that whenever I changed my SCSS file and then hit the page (controller) again, the SCSS would recompile. I can't seem to get this to work, and can't seem to find a good tutorial / example for it. I've tried setting the above property in the Environment.rb file, but it didn't seem to do anything. I tried putting it in its own initializer with require 'sass' but that doesn't seem to work either. What am I missing? Or am i just forced to keep a terminal open with a sass --watch command running to be able to rapidly debug / change my styles? thx

• Drupal on an NFS share has terrible performance

  We have a setup where a Drupal 7 site with the following setup - a VMware ESXi 4.1 host server running a web vm and an NFS VM. The web VM is using Apache and mod_php. The site is still in development thus we have to turn off all forms of caching due to the frequently-updated files. Each page request takes around 15-20 seconds to complete. Profiling the PHP code shows that the vast majority of time (normally over 90%) is taking by all the is_dir(), is_file() function calls that load up the modules. I've increased PHP's realpath cache size to several megs and an strace shows that the lstat calls then drop from over 200 to around 6 and stat() decreases a bit (around 600 calls). However, while this has shaved off quite a bit of time, I am simply unable to break past the 10 second per request barrier. Is there a way to get better performance out of this setup that doesn't involve caching? • Getting Bad file descriptor when running Tornado AsyncHTTPTestCase

  When running a test using the Tornado AsyncHTTPTestCase I'm getting a stack trace that isn't related to the test. The test is passing so this is probably happening on the test clean up? I'm using Python 2.7.2, Tornado 2.2. • Weird IIS with Windows Authentication + IE problem

  I have a website running on IIS and using Windows Authentication. All users that are configured to get access to the site are form a AD domain (not local users). In the properties of a Website, I have set to use the AD domain as the realm. Now, when using Firefox, Safari or Chrome - Everything is fine. When the user tries to open the site, he get's the login box. he enters simply "username" and "password" (let's pretend that it's an actual login and password :P) and he get's into the site. When using IE, however, things get nasty. When the user tries to open the site - he get's the login box. User enters the "username" and "password" again, but those get rejected! And when the second time login box pops up - it has the username filled in as "web-server-domain-name\username" which is wrong, because web-server-domain-name is not the domain where all users reside (it's "ad-domain"). I've spent days trying to figure out what's going on... Note, that if I manually enter "ad-domain\username" - I get accepted into the site without problems. So, my guess is that IE sends wrong username if domain is not specified. Anyway, IE is the only browser that triggers this behavior! Is it possible to do a server-side fix? Maybe it's possible to somehow auto-map the users to AD users? If it's not solvable server-side - is there a client-side fix for this? Thank you. PS: I'm more of a programmer than a sys-admin, so configuring servers isn't the strong side of mine... :P UPDATE: @Evan: Yes, "Digest authentication for Windows domain servers" is also enabled. @Eric: IIS version is 6.0. The authentication methods enabled are: Integrated and digest - all other methods are disabled. As for the security log. I looked at it, when doing "username" and "password" login in Chrome/Firefox and when doing "ad-domain\username" and "password" login from IE - the generated log messages are the same (I see no difference, anyway). When entering "username" and "password" I don't see any errors in the security (or any other) log, so can't tell what method it's trying to use. UPDATE 2: As suggested by Eric in the comments - I played around with Fiddler... While playing with it, I noticed, that when "username" and "password" is entered in FF and IE - the "Authorization" header value (encrypted) sent by IE is longer (almost two times) than one sent by FF. I tried to disable Windows Integrated authentication and only leave the Digest enabled - that fixed the problem (meaning, IE used the right realm just like other browsers), but that caused bazillion other problems with my site, because with Digest - user impersonation on the server doesn't work (that causes problems, when connecting to database etc). Any ideas?

On my server, inside of the handler for the initiating method I have the following (I have tried every interface that I listed in place of IOutputChannel. I am following chaining link-list approach to overcome the same? But, somehow my code is behaving differently. I am not able to debug the same? Can somebody help? This is what i am facing: Say first time, i insert a string called gaur. My hash map calculates the index as 0 and inserts the string successfully. However, when another string whose hash map also when calculates turns out to be 0, my previous value gets overrridden i.e. gaur will be replaced by new string. • apache mod_rewrite regex problem with multiple parameter

  Regular expressions have always been my pet peeves. Every time I think that I finally got it I have a new problem ! I want to catch url like this : http://www.mydomain.com/boutique/blabla-1/bla-bla2/99/104 http://www.mydomain.com/boutique/blabla1/99 and eventually : http://www.mydomain.com/boutique/blabla-1/bla-bla2/product1/99/104/55/ after a lot of tries and errors I came up with this which seems to work with http://www.gskinner.com/RegExr/ but not in apache ^.*/boutique/([a-zA-Z-]*)(/?[a-zA-Z-]*)/?([0-9]*)/?([0-9]*)/?$ boutique.php?c1=$3&c2=$4 (I was only working with the first two url so far) MY apache rewrite log debug files are helpless : pass through /Users/iko/Sites/mysite/boutique.php I'm only interrested in getting the ids. • How do I get callgrind to dump source line information?

  I'm trying to profile a shared library on GNU/Linux which does real-time audio processing, so performance is important. I run another program which hooks it up to the audio input and output of my system, and profile that with callgrind. Looking at the results in KCacheGrind, I get great information about what functions are taking up most of my time. However, it won't let me look at the line by line information, and instead says I need to compile it with debugging symbols and run the profiling again. The program which I am profiling is not compiled with debug symbols, but the library is. And I know this, because interestingly, source code annotations for cachegrind work fine. When I run callgrind, it says the default is to dump source line information, but it just isn't doing that. Is there some way I could force it to, or figure out what's stopping it?

I tried checking the event log for errors, but found nothing. Or more precisely, I did find local an activation permission error, but this was fixed once I added local launch/activation permission for Network Service to the Machine Debug Manager via the component services tool.   I want to create a .NET CF application for Windows Mobile 5. In this application, I want to load a COM object based on the ProgID (or CLSID). How do I load this COM object in such a way that I can access its methods as if it were just another .NET object? In addition: how can I configure the projects / solutions in Visual Studio in such a way, that when I debug the application, I am sure that the COM object that is loaded is the one that is installed on the device, not one that may be accessible through the debugger? I have tried adding the .ocx file as a Reference, but I get an error, and I am not sure about 'question 2'. I have also tried loading the COM object using Type type = Type.GetTypeFromProgID("my.prog.id") MyObject myObject = (MyObject)Activator.CreateInstance(type) ...but this results in an InvalidCastException on the second line.

  I'm attempting to unify the log format of my uwsgi instance. I understand that the uncaught exception probably can't be formatted, but is there some way of having uwsgi use the logging module for its internal logs? Or the other way around?

(rest of my application config). There are no other error or warning messages. I have also tried to google examples of how to configure gen_server and also the error itself. I am surprised at how little information there is out there. I could start trying to debug OTP?? Any pointers would be appreciated.

  I've created a WCF service and added it to an existing Silverlight application that I am working on. When I run the silverlight application in debug mode it fails when I reference the WCF web service. Unrecognized element '' in service reference configuration. Note that only a subset of the Windows Communication Foundation configuration functionality is available in Silverlight. After searching around apparently the following line is causing the app to fail: <transport> <extendedProtectionPolicy policyEnforcement="Never" /> </transport> After removing the above lines everything works. What is the issue here? Should I believing this code in and configuring something else?

I want to iterate through it and find all the 'name' attributes. My code looks like: response["groups"]["Nearby"]["venues"].each do |key| logger.debug key['name'] end But I keep on getting error: TypeError (can't convert String into Integer): I am on ruby 1.9.

• Creating a VS 2010 Project with only content files.

  I have some content files that I would like to share between a number of projects in Visual Studio. I have put these files in their own project, set the build action to "Content", and the copy to output directory to "Copy if newer". I would like all these files to be copied to the bin/debug directory of the projects that reference them. I can get it to work by including a reference to the "contents" project in each of the projects that need the files, but that requires that a minimal assembly be generated (3K). I assume there is a way, using MSBuild, to make this all work without creating the empty assembly?
