• How can I pass a dynamic backing bean into a JSF 2.0 page using facelets?

  Hi, I am using a JSF 2.0 to create a web app (purely jee6, without spring/seam etc.). I would like to have a single xhtml page but pass the proper backing bean / entity into it. For example, I would like to be able to edit a user other than the logged in user, I have a user edit page which displays the information of the logged in user (being tracked by my session), I would like to instead pass in a user selected from a list and edit that user's information, without switching the user that is stored in the session or creating a separate xhtml page (violating DRY). The "best" way I can see to achieve this would be to reuse the exact same xhtml page that I am using to display the logged-in-user's edit page, but simply pass in a different entity in some way. Perhaps calling the setter in the backing bean before redirecting to the page (if this is even possible) or some other solution that does not violate DRY. Perhaps I have designed this all wrong, is there a way to pass in entities to JSF pages? thanks.

• How can I easily pass all the variables from a template to a partial in Symfony with output escaping

  It there an easy way to pass all the variables a template file has access to onto a partial when I have output escaping on? I tend to create a template file, then refactor things into a partial at some point and it would seem that there would be an easy way to just pass all the same variables from the template to the partial and be done with it. I have output escaping on and I can't just pass in $sf_data. It look like calling a partial from within another partial is very simple...just pass in the variable $vars.

  How do I pass a test of programming knowledge for a higher score on oDesk.com? I have passed php and javascript tests but I have passed them with low scores and barley passing. This doesn't look too appealing for clients and I'm afraid that is the reason I am not being hired for a job. I know I am capable of doing web work and such. But I haven't been accepted for an interview or anything. Any idea how to study for something like this ?

• Is it bad practice to pass instances through several layers?

  In my program design, I often come to the point where I have to pass object instances through several classes. For example, if I have a controller that loads an audio file, and then passes it to a player, and the player passes it to the playerRunnable, which passes it again somewhere else etc. It looks kind of bad, but I don´t know how to avoid it. Or is it OK to do this? EDIT: Maybe the player example is not the best because I could load the file later, but in other cases that does not work.

  I am a Powershell novice and have run into a challenge in reading, sorting, and outputting a csv file. The input csv has no headers, the data is as follows: 05/25/2010,18:48:33,Stop,a1usak,10.128.212.212 05/25/2010,18:48:36,Start,q2uhal,10.136.198.231 05/25/2010,18:48:09,Stop,s0upxb,10.136.198.231 I use the following piping construct to read the file, sort and output to a file: (Get-Content d:\vpnData\u62gvpn2.csv) | %{,[regex]::Split($, ",")} | sort @{Expression={$[3]}},@{Expression={$_[1]}} | out-file d:\vpnData\u62gvpn3.csv The new file is written with the following format: 05/25/2010 07:41:57 Stop a0uaar 10.128.196.160 05/25/2010 12:24:24 Start a0uaar 10.136.199.51 05/25/2010 20:00:56 Stop a0uaar 10.136.199.51 What I would like to see in the output file is a similar format to the original input file with comma dilimiters: 05/25/2010,07:41:57,Stop,a0uaar,10.128.196.160 05/25/2010,12:24:24,Start,a0uaar,10.136.199.51 05/25/2010,20:00:56,Stop,a0uaar,10.136.199.51 But I can't quite seem to get there. I'm almost of the mind that I'll have to write another segment to read the newly produced file and reset its contents to the preferred format for further processing. Thoughts?

  On this official Google page about canonical links it says: Can rel="canonical" be a redirect? Yes, you can specify a URL that redirects as a canonical URL. Google will then process the redirect as usual and try to index it. There is no mention that this might dilute the impact of the canonical link. However, Google has made clear elsewhere that 301 redirects do dilute PageRank - roughly as much as a link dilutes PageRank. Is that relevant here? • What sort of object is this and how to use it?

There are 3 main sections and 4 sub-parts consisting of "issuedTime" "text" "url" and "validToTime", how do you start to convert this to an object?   I have to parse the XML file and build objects representation based on that, now once I get all these data I create entries in various database for these data objects. I have to do second pass over that for value as in the first pass all I could do is build the assets in various databases. and in second pass I get the values for all the data and put it in the database. I have a feeling that this can be done in a single pass but I just want to see what are your opinions. As I am just a student who started with professional work, experienced ppl please help.   In our company we've written a library function to call a function asynchronously in a separate thread. It works using a combination of inheritance and template magic. The client code looks as follows: DemoThread thread; std::string stringToPassByValue = "The string to pass by value"; AsyncCall(thread, &DemoThread::SomeFunction, stringToPassByValue); Since the introduction of lambda functions I'd like to use it in combination with lambda functions. I'd like to write the following client code: DemoThread thread; std::string stringToPassByValue = "The string to pass by value"; AsyncCall(thread, [=]() { const std::string someCopy = stringToPassByValue; }); Now, with the Visual C++ 2010 this code doesn't work. What happens is that the stringToPassByValue is not copied. Instead the "capture by value" feature passes the data by reference. The result is that if the function is executed after stringToPassByValue has gone out of scope, the application crashes as its destructor is called already. So I wonder: is it possible to pass data to a lambda function as a copy? Note: One possible solution would be to modify our framework to pass the data in the lambda parameter declaration list, as follows: DemoThread thread; std::string stringToPassByValue = "The string to pass by value"; AsyncCall(thread, [=](const std::string stringPassedByValue) { const std::string someCopy = stringPassedByValue; } , stringToPassByValue); However, this solution is so verbose that our original function pointer solution is both shorter and easier to read. Update: The full implementation of AsyncCall is too big to post here. In short, what happens is that the AsyncCall template function instantiates a template class holding the lambda function. This class is derived from a base class that contains a virtual Execute() function, and upon an AsyncCall() call, the function call class is put on a call queue. A different thread then executes the queued calls by calling the virtual Execute() function, which is polymorphically dispatched to the template class which then executes the lambda function.

My question is - how should I pass user input from the UI to the BL, as a bunch of strings passed to the BL method and the BL will build the object from the parameters, or should I build the objects inside the UI submit_function and send objects as parameters? I'm able to bind primitive types and arrays of primitive types, but haven't found a way to pass complex datatypes back and forth. Is this unsupported? Compare the two code blocks and their output, notice the second sample adds one to the month in it's first mktime. $monthis = 5; echo date('F', mktime(0,0,0,$monthis,0,0)) . " 1, 2010 is on a " . date("l F", mktime(0, 0, 0, $monthis, 1, 2010)); puts out April 1, 2010 is on a Saturday May but if I change it to $monthis = 5; echo date('F', mktime(0,0,0,$monthis + 1,0,0)) . " 1, 2010 is on a " . date("l F", mktime(0, 0, 0, $monthis, 1, 2010)); puts out May 1, 2010 is on a Saturday May Why do I have to add one to the month in the first mktime so that both emit the same month? • Long connection times from PHP to MySQL on EC2

  I'm having an intermittent issue connecting to a database slave with InnoDB. Intermittently I get connections taking longer than 2 seconds. These servers are hosted on Amazon's EC2. The app server is PHP 5.2/Apache running on Ubuntu. The DB slave is running Percona's XtraDB 5.1 on Ubuntu 9.10. It's using an EBS Raid array for the data storage. We already use skip name resolve and bind to address 0.0.0.0. This is a stub of the PHP code that's failing $tmp = mysqli_init(); $start_time = microtime(true); $tmp-options(MYSQLI_OPT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT, 2); $tmp-real_connect($DB_SERVERS[$server]['server'], $DB_SERVERS[$server]['username'], $DB_SERVERS[$server]['password'], $DB_SERVERS[$server]['schema'], $DB_SERVERS[$server]['port']); if(mysqli_connect_errno()){ $timer = microtime(true) - $start_time; mail($errors_to,'DB connection error',$timer); } There's more than 300Mb available on the DB server for new connections and the server is nowhere near the max allowed (60 of 1,200). Loading on both servers is < 2 on 4 core m1.xlarge instances. Some highlights from the mysql config max_connections = 1200 thread_stack = 512K thread_cache_size = 1024 thread_concurrency = 16 innodb-file-per-table innodb_additional_mem_pool_size = 16M innodb_buffer_pool_size = 13G Any help on tracing the source of the slowdown is appreciated. [EDIT] I have been updating the sysctl values for the network but they don't seem to be fixing the problem. I made the following adjustments on both the database and application servers. net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling = 1 net.ipv4.tcp_sack = 0 net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps = 0 net.ipv4.tcp_fin_timeout = 20 net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_time = 180 net.ipv4.tcp_max_syn_backlog = 1280 net.ipv4.tcp_synack_retries = 1 net.core.rmem_max = 16777216 net.core.wmem_max = 16777216 net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 16777216 net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 87380 16777216 [EDIT] Per jaimieb's suggestion, I added some tracing and captured the following data using time. This server handles about 51 queries/second at this the time of day. The connection error was raised once (at 13:06:36) during the 3 minute window outlined below. Since there was 1 failure and roughly 9,200 successful connections, I think this isn't going to produce anything meaningful in terms of reporting. We had been running the default value (50) and increased it to 150. We also raised the kernel value /proc/sys/net/core/somaxconn (maximum socket connections) to 256 on both the application and database server from the default 128. We did see some elevation in processor utilization as a result but still received connection timeouts.
