  I recenty stumbled upon some files described as "HTML Applications" on my Win XP machine. What are they? Who would ever use them? Why do I have like 2 or 3 of them on my PC? How do they generally work? I mean hey - HTML is for adding formatting to text - HTML Applications? What the? Microsoft?

• XamlReader.Parse throws exception on empty String

  In our app, we need to save properties of objects to the same database table regardless of the type of object, in the form of propertyName, propertyValue, propertyType. We decided to use XamlWriter to save all of the given object's properties. We then use XamlReader to load up the XAML that was created, and turn it back into the value for the property. This works fine for the most part, except for empty strings. The XamlWriter will save an empty string as below. <String xmlns="clr-namespace:System;assembly=mscorlib" xml:space="preserve" /> The XamlReader sees this string and tries to create a string, but can't find an empty constructor in the String object to use, so it throws a ParserException. The only workaround that I can think of is to not actually save the property if it is an empty string. Then, as I load up the properties, I can check for which ones did not exist, which means they would have been empty strings. Is there some workaround for this, or is there even a better way of doing this?

Since the row does not contain real data I hide the row. ... • how to target css to iPad but exclude Safari 4 desktop using a media query?

  I am trying to use a media rule to target css to iPad only. I want to exclude iPhone/iPod and desktop browsers. I would like to to also exclude other mobile devices if possible. I have used <style type="text/css" media="only screen and (min-device-width: 768px) and (max-device-width: 1024px)"> but just found out that desktop Safari 4 reads it. I have tried variations with "481px" instead of "768px" and another that adds an orientation to that: <style type="text/css" media="only screen and (min-device-width: 481px) and (max-device-width: 1024px) and (orientation:portrait)"> but not luck. (Later we will be sniffing user-agent strings for iPad, but for now that solution won't work.) Thanks!

• What are the things I use every day programmed with?

  It isn't so interesting to find out what this text editor here or that IRC client there was programmed with, also it isn't really hard and neither are there really suprising things to come out. Wow so it was programmed in Python, I didn't expect that. What I'm asking is: What are the things that we daily see, use or generally need programmed with? To name a few (really only a few of those out there): My alarm clock It has many features so it would probably be hard programming it with assembler or whatever, so did they probably use a programming language? If yes, which? My electrical tooth brush The (stupid) board computer of my car. (6 years old, has few features but a red LED display showing me how cold/warm it is outside and how much gas I'm using up per hour at the moment) Those (old) plastic mini-mini computers with the LCD(?) displays that only had one game available on them: PacMan, tetris or so. I'm not directly thinking of this but it may be similar: Other, probably more interesting, things I didn't mention

I decided to write the backend of the site using Python and mod_python on Apache. To authenticate the users, I thought I could use python_pam to query the PAM service.   I want to run a diagnostic report on our MS SQL 2008 database server. I am looping through all of the databases, and then for each database, I want to look at each table. But, when I go to look at each table (with tbl_cursor), it always picks up the tables in the database 'master'. • Custom jQuery dropdown

  I am creating a custom simple dropdown using jQuery that hides/shows a element based on over state. The problem I have now is that when you go over the shown element it hides, you cant move your mouse in to the dropdown that was created. Any thoughts on how to fix that also, is there an easier way to do what I have?   Hi, I need to programmatically override the following events of a worksheet: BeforeDoubleClick SelectionChange BeforeRightClick I have been able to override the OnActivate event using the following code: sheet.OnSheetActivate = "MyOwn_Activate" Private Sub MyOwn_Activate() myForm.Show End Sub I have implemented BeforeDoubleClick on similar lines: sheet.OnDoubleClick = "My_BeforeDoubleClick" Private Sub My_BeforeDoubleClick(ByVal Target As Range, Cancel As Boolean) ... End Sub However, an 'argument not optional' error is thrown at run-time when user double clicks a cell on the sheet. Can someone please suggest how should I pass the paramters? In addition, I am not able to find event names for SelectionChange & BeforeRightClick. I tried: sheet.BeforeRightClick = "My_BeforeRightClick" sheet.SelectionChange = "My_SelectionChange" But, both the above lines do not work. Any help/ suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

• Can't read query string if default index file name is omitted?

  Is there an issue with IIS or ASP Classic where *Request.ServerVariables("QUERY_STRING")* returns blank if no default file name is given in the URL? On my local developer machine, I can do http://localhost/xslt/?opcs/abc which returns "opcs/abc". However, on our ancient web server, it returns nothing. I have to explicitly give it the default file name in the URL. Like so http://localhost/xslt/default.asp?opcs/abc While nothing too major, it is a little bit of a annoyance. One way I can maybe think of remidying the problem is have Javascript read the URL and return everything after the ?. Unfortunately, I do not know what version of IIS or ASP we are using. Thank you.

• [PHP] building html tables from query data... faster?

  With my limited experience/knowledge I am using the following structure to generate HTML tables on the fly from MySQL queries: $c = 0; $t = count($results); $table = '<table>'; while ($c < $t) { $table .= "<tr><td>$results[0]</td><td>$results[1]</td> (etc etc) </tr>"; ++$c; } $table .= '</table>'; this works, obviously. But for tables with 300+ rows there is a noticeable delay in pageload while the script builds the table. Currently the maximum results list is only about 1,100 rows, and the wait isn't long, but there's clearly a wait. Are there other methods for outputting an HTML table that are faster than my WHILE loop? (PHP only please...)

  Example: SELECT id, name FROM user WHERE id IN (1,2,3,4,5) ORDER BY FIELD(id, 2, 3, 4, 1, 5) I've seen some examples using FIND_IN_SET() or FIELD() functions. Which one is better? Are there any more efficient approaches? Order is supposed to change rarely.

• How do programming languages bind identifiers to functions

  I'm talking about C and/or C++ here as this are the only languages I know used for interpreters where the following could be a problem: If we have an interpreted language X how can a library written for it add functions to the language which can then be called from within programs written in the language? PHP example: substr( $str, 5, 10 ); How is the function substr added to the "function pool" of PHP so it can be called from within scripts? It is easy for PHP storing all registered function names in an array and searching through it as a function is called in a script. However, as there obviously is no eval in C(++), how can the function then be called? I assume PHP doesn't have 100MB of code like: if( identifier == "substr" ) { return PHP_SUBSTR(...); } else if( ... ) { ... } Ha ha, that would be pretty funny. I hope you have understood my question so far. How do interpreters solve this problem? How can I solve this for my own experimental toy interpreter?
