    Given a URL to an image (and not the image itself), what's the most efficient of getting it's dimensions? I would like to change the height and width attributes in the image tag (<img>) if it is greater than 200x200. However, if it's smaller than that, then I'd like to keep the size as it is. (I'm using ASP.NET/C#)

I am trying to implement SIFT algorithm where I am able to create the DoG pyramid and identify the local maximum or minimum in each octave. What I don't understand is that how to use these local max/min in each octave. How do I combine these points? My question may sound very trivial.   • IE is ignoring Z-Index on positioned elements

    IE yet again is proving to be the bane of my existence. The top of a site I'm working on has a horizontal menu, an item of which triggers a pure-CSS menu that is positioned absolute within the parent menu DIV (positioned relative). This places the menu perfectly in both IE and the W3C compliant browsers. The problem arises when I have more positioned elements further down on the page. These are also positioned relative, because there is data inside them that needs to be positioned absolute... again, this displays properly in all browsers I've tested it on. The problem is, that then the top menu is opened, part is obscured by the positioned elements further down the page - in effect, it's positioned BELOW these elements even though there are z-index properties defined on all. (in both the CSS file and inline). The only way to get IE to display this properly is to place the actual HTML for the menu at the bottom of the page, below (in DOM terms) the positioned elements elsewhere on the page. I would only do this as an absolute last resort. All Elements are the same type (div).   • More specific NSNumberFormatter failure behaviour

    I have an NSTextField into which I need the user to enter a number between a max and min, and it would be nice if I could detect when the NSNumberFormatter fails that particular test so I can either display a nicer message ("The number is too large" is not very helpful, it needs to display the valid range) or simply set the field automatically to the nearest valid value. I've looked at the NSTextField delegate's -control:didFailToFormatString:errorDescription: method which doesn't seem to allow you to modify the error, and I've looked at overriding the NSNumberFormatter's -getObjectValue:forString:range:error: method which does give me an NSError that I can modify, but there doesn't seem to be any way to determine which specific error was returned. Since I am just entering a simple integer, I don't need most of the functionality in NSNumberFormatter, would I be better off just writing my own formatter from scratch?

I got the sidebar DIV to be aligned to the right of the page by doing float: right, but when the text in the sidebar stops the main area takes over the width that should be used by the sidebar.     I'm trying to run the following code, written on my local machine: http://www.jsfiddle.net/WShdx/3/ Functionality-wise (ignore the broken images in the previous and next buttons, and the wrongly-sized main images) the click/hover function is working properly in jsfiddle. However, on my local machine it's not working at all.   • flex textarea text attribute but still renders as html

    actually i got to the cause of the issue. if you feed the textarea text attribute with an tag that has a valid src url, then for some reason flex will try to render everything as html. Eg, try this: <mx:TextArea id="textArea" width="100%" height="90%" text="<img src='http://url-to-a-valid-img"/> and instead of it rendering it as raw text it will render it as an html. any idea?

Some notable solutions as of 8th of May 2009, 10:44 GMT: 1) Daniel Lew was the first to post correctly working code. 2) Kris has provided the simplest solution for the given problem. 3) Tom Hawtin - tackline, came up arguably with the most elegant solution. 4) mmyers pointed out that printing is likely to become a bottleneck and can be improved through buffering. 5) Jay's brute force approach is notable since, besides defying the core point of programming, the resulting source code takes about 128 GB and will blow compiler limits. As a side note I believe that the answers do demonstrate that it could be a good interview question, as long as the emphasis is not on the ability to remember trivia about the data type overflow and its implications (that can be easily spotted during unit testing), or the way of obtaining MAX and MIN limits (can easily be looked up in the documentation) but rather on the analysis of various ways of dealing with the problem.

    Is there a way to make the console output text wrap based on the actual width of the window? I have limited screen height real estate on my laptop, and so want to have the console window docked on the right rather than the bottom of the window. An option or a plugin is fine, I'm using NetBeans 6.8. If this exists in a newer version of NetBeans, please say so, but I can't install a dev build.
