• Please help rails problem with stringify_keys error

  I have been trying to solve this for ages and can't figure it out. I have a form like so (taking out a lot of other fields) <% form_for @machine_enquiry, machine_enquiry_path(@machine_enquiry) do|me_form| %> <% me_form.fields_for :messages_attributes do |f| %> <%= f.text_field :title -%> <% end %> <%= me_form.submit 'Send message' %> <% end %> And an update action like @machine_enquiry = MachineEnquiry.find(params[:id]) @machine_enquiry.update_attributes(params[:machine_enquiry] And a machine_enquiry class like so: class MachineEnquiry < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :messages, :as => :messagable, :dependent => • How do the performance characteristics of jQuery selectors differ from those of CSS selectors?

  I came across Google's Page Speed add-on for Firebug yesterday. The page about using efficient CSS selectors said to not use overqualified selectors, i.e. use #foo instead of div#foo. I thought the latter would be faster but Google's saying otherwise, and who am I to go against that? So that got me wondering if the same applied to jQuery selectors. This page I found the link to on SO says I should use $("div#foo"), which is what I was doing all along, since I thought that things would speed up by limiting the selector to match div elements only. But is it really better than writing $("#foo") like Google's saying for CSS selectors, or do CSS versus jQuery element matching work in different ways and I should stick with $("div#foo")?

  hi all I have a ruby / rails application that integrates in and outgoing email directly into the app. The app is going to be running on multiple domains each with posible many users sending and recieving email. I have looked into sendgrid, mailchimp and mad mimi as hosted services and also looked to create my own email server. There are advantages and disadvantages of both solutions and i am not sure which one to go down and am hoping someone can give me advice ?? Any help will be great. • pass form builder in remote_function in rails ?

  hi all i have select box where on change i need to grab the value and via remote function get some field names from db and then generate those field further down the form depwning on whatoption from the select box is chosen. The problem is is that the fields are in a f.form_for so are using the formbuilder f that has the select box in. So when i render the partial via ajax in the controller i get an error as i dont have a reference to the local form builder f. does anyone know how or if i can get reference to the form builder orif can pass it in a remote function call and then pass into my locals in the partial ? thanks alot, any help will be great as been stuck on this a long time! cheers rick

  I run the same process on a 32bit machine as on a 64bit machine with the same memory VM settings (-Xms1024m -Xmx1024m) and similar VM version (1.6.0_05 vs 1.6.0_16). However the virtual space used by the 64bit machine (as shown in top under "VIRT") is almost three times as big as that in 32bit! I know 64bit VMs will use a little more memory for the larger references, but how can it be three times as big? Am I reading VIRT in top incorrectly?   Hi, Here's what I'm trying to do: joomla in 1 subdirectory, wordpress in another. mysite.com directs to the joomla directory mysite.com/blog gives wordpress. I would also like to use seo friendly permalinks for both.   I want to create a class that takes two parameters. One should be typed simply as T. The other should be typed as something that extends both T and SomeInterface. When I attempt this with public class SomeClass<T, S extends SomeInterface<T> & T> then Java complains with "The type T is not an interface; it cannot be specified as a bounded parameter" and if instead I attempt to create an interface for S with public interface TandSomeInterface<T> extends SomeInterface<T>, T then Java complains with "Cannot refer to the type parameter T as a supertype" Is there any way to do this in Java? I think you can do it in C++...?

• SQL Server 2008 - cannot register default instance MSSQLSERVER

  Hello, I have installed SQL Server 2008 Developer on Windows 7 64 bit. In Management Studio I cannot register the default instance MSSQLSERVER, it cannot find it although the service is running. I get the message: Cannot connect to PHOENIX\MSSQLSERVER. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 87) However Management Studio does show the SQL Server 2005 Express instance (that was installed with VS 2008 Pro) which appeared as already registered. I an using Windows Authentication as I installed it in mixed mode. Any ideas would be appreciated, many thanks paul

• Is this the right way to organize my database tables?

  So I'm making a website that allows users to build contact lists. So their are users, the users have lists, and the lists have contacts. It seems to me that I need 3 tables for this but I just want to make sure. There would be a User table of course, and then a "List of Lists" table that has the username, and listname, as primary key along with whatever other info we want to attach to the lists as a whole. Finally, for lack of a better word, the List table which would again have the username/listname p.k., then the contact ID and notes and such that the user attaches to that contact on that specific list. I hope that is a clear explanation. For some reason I feel unsure about this arrangement. For one thing if the website becomes popular the List table could swell to billions of rows. And it also feels a little weird that everybody's list info is all jumbled up in the same table. I suppose I could create separate tables for each user and even for each list but that seems like a bad idea for other reasons. My db explanation assumes I can use foreign keys on my tables which at the moment isn't actually an option. If I can't get InnoDB tables enabled I will probably use ID's for the lists instead of depending on a compound key. Maybe I should do this anyway?

• MySQL - What is wrong with this query or my database? Terrible performance.

  SELECT * from `employees` a LEFT JOIN (SELECT phone1 p1, count(*) c, FROM `employees` GROUP BY phone1) b ON a.phone1 = b.p1; I'm not sure if it is this query in particular that has the problem. I have been getting terrible performance in general with this database. The table in question has 120,000 rows. I have tried this particular query remotely and locally with the MyISAM and InnoDB engines, with different types of joins, and with and without an index on phone1. I can get this to complete in about 4 minutes on a 10,000 row table successfully but performance drops exponentially with larger tables. Remotely it will lose connection to the server and locally it brings my system to its knees and seems to go on forever. This query is only a smaller step I was trying to do when a larger query couldn't complete. Maybe I should explain the whole scenario. I have one big flat ugly table that lists a bunch of people and their contact info and the info of the companies they work for. I'm trying to normalize the database and intelligently determine which phone numbers apply to individual people and which apply to an office location. My reasoning is that if a phone number occurs multiple times and the number of occurrence equals the number of times that the street address it is attached to occurs then it must be an office number. So the first step is to count each phone number grouping by phone number. Normally if you just use COUNT()...GROUP BY it will only list the first record it finds in that group so I figured I have to join the full table to the count table where the phone number matches. This does work but as I said I can't successfully complete it on any table much larger than 10,000 rows. This seems pathetic and this doesn't seem like a crazy query to do. Is there a better way to achieve what I want or do I have to break my large table into 12 pieces or is there something wrong with the table or db?

  Hello, I am looking at ASP.NET membership controls (2008) and have been dropping them onto web pages to see how it all works. In some ASP.NET starter kit web site examples that I downloaded, I notice that between the asp:control tags I can see all the tags of the constituent parts like the textboxes, labels and buttons etc. However with the membership control that I am using in 2008 I do not see these other tags. Is this because the starter kit examples are from an older version or is it possible to expose these inner tags? It seems that this would make it possible to customize the controls.   I have two unit tests that should share a lot of common tests with slightly different setup methods. If I write something like class Abstract < Test::Unit::TestCase def setup @field = create end def test_1 ... end end class Concrete1 < Abstract def create SomeClass1.new end end class Concrete2 < Abstract def create SomeClass2.new end end then Concrete1 does not seem to inherit the tests from Abstract. Or at least I cannot get them to run in eclipse. If I choose "Run all TestCases" for the file that contains Concrete1 then Abstract is run even though I do not want it to be. If I specify Concrete1 then it does not run any tests at all! If I specify test_1 in Concrete1 then it complains it cannot find it ("uncaught throw :invalid_test (ArgumentError)"). I'm new to Ruby. What am I missing here?

• Trying to install ffmpeg-php and having installation issues.

  I've installed ffmpeg successfully using the ffmpeginstaller 3 series (http://www.ffmpeginstaller.com/download). ffmpeg is working fine without any known issues with bash. The ffmpeginstaller is meant to install ffmpeg-php but it cannot be found and I receive an error when I execute php -v PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib64/php/modules/ffmpeg.so' - /usr/lib64/php/modules/ffmpeg.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 Looking at the '/usr/lib64/php/modules/' folder, it doesn't contain the ffmpeg.so file. I've tried to install ffmpeg-php manually but I receive the following error checking for ffmpeg headers... configure: error: ffmpeg headers not found. Make sure you've built ffmpeg as shared libs using the --enable-shared option Should I install ffmpeg with series 4 or 5 of ffmpeginstaller or does someone know how to fix this issue?
