• How do you maintain content size vs. content quality in a mobile application?

  I am developing my first Cocos2d iPhone/iPad game that includes quite a few sprites, I would need approximately 80 different. As this is for both normal and HD displays I have 2x of each sprite. I am using TexturePacker to optimize the thing. I would like to ask if there are any rules-of-thumb, tricks, ideas etc. to adjust to in regards to size of content, quality and how you maintain high-quality HD-based graphics due to its size vs. the device memory sizes? Also, is it a good idea to only have one copy of the sprites and scale it using code?

• Boot splash broken by "SP5100 TCO timer: mmio address 0xyyyyyyy already in use"

  I have ubuntu 11.04 with all the latest updates. I have an ATI HD 4350 graphics card and the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" activated. The reported behaviour does not affect the functionality, its just an optical thing. When I booted up using the desktop CD, the ubuntu boot splash was shown correctly in high resolution. • Banshee won't sync OGG format to my iphone

  I have a jailbroken iphone 3g with 16 gigs of memory and I've been putting my music on it from banshee lately and have been having almost no issue. Unfortunately, I just added a few albums to my Banshee library and tried to sync them to my iphone, but every time I try, i see a hundred or so errors saying that the device doesn't support the ogg format and there was no converter found. I'm still pretty much a newb at this stuff, so please help me and dumb down your answer. I'm running 12.04 and again, using an iphone 3g with no sim card, but it's been jailbroken and is used primarily for it's music function.

• Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7 SP1 released to manufacturers

  SP1 went RTM today which means it will be widely available soon. According  to the Microsoft server division blog, the service pack will be available to Microsoft's TechNet and MSDN subscribers, as well as to Microsoft volume licensing customers, on Feb. 16, 2011. • No splash screen on hibernate

  Hibernate is working fine. A bit slow when resuming from a hibernate but I can bear with it just so that I have all open applications on the desktop as I left it. Then again the "slowness" might be because of the 4GB RAM, although I'm assuming only what is used gets swapped and not the entire memory. Going back, my question is has anyone been able to make Ubuntu show a splash screen or some kind of indicator/progress bar to show while hibernating or while resuming? I remember with SuSE on my HP Compaq Presario notebook it had messages appear during and after. Better than nothing, I guess. Thanks in advance! :D

• Trouble with 12.10 lag

  Well basicly lately I have been having lag problems with 12.10. I will post my specs, but before the update to 12.10, it said that I had intel graphics. Now it says I have Gallium. • How much C/C++ knowledge is needed for Objective-C/iPhone development?

  First, a little background. I'm a .Net developer (C#) and have over 5 years experience in both web development and desktop applications. I've been wanting to look into iPhone development for some time now, but for one reason or another always got side tracked. I finally have a potential project on the horizon, and I'm now going full steam ahead learning this stuff. My question is this: I haven't done any C/C++ programming since my schooling days, I've been living in managed land ever since. How much knowledge if any is needed to be successful as an iOS developer? Obviously memory management is something that I'll have to be conscious about (although with iOS 5 there seems to be something called ARC which should make my life easier), but what else? I'm not just talking about the C API (for example, in order to get the sin of a number, I call the sin() function), that's what Google is for. I'm talking about fundamental C/C++ idioms that the average C# developer is unaware of.

• google earth 7, 32bit in 12.10 runs without error but there is no image (globe)

  Everything seemed to install fine. I can start google earth and all layers are available, I can even zoom in and look at 3-D buildings. But there is absolutely no image data displayed at all. If you look at the whole globe the outlines are there on an invisible globe. As you zoom in the base looks dark grey almost black but there is no image. I have tried. Tools Options Graphics Safe Mode Tools Options Texture colors all combinations Tools Options Cache (tried several changes to the numbers) lspci shows Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03) Running on a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop (1.5Gb memory)

• Handheld device software - Handheld tuners?

  Hey I've been looking around and really don't understand what software some of these company's use for their handheld devices. I've used a lot of Handheld Tuners (Cobb Accessport, Diablo Sport). I've gotten more and more knowledgable of programming and I'm really wanting to understand what software they use on these devices to have a graphical interface. And to hold all the files to flash over to the ecu. I'm just unsure how you would get basically all the components to work together (screen, buttons, memory) without having drivers installed. I could be totally wrong here on using the term drivers, but that's what I would like some help to get more knowledge on (only thing I've really found is making a handheld game boy from scratch,but that was using a emulator.). I've tried looking it up but can't really find a good write up or explanation anywhere I look. Just really would like to put a little device together and have a simple user interface and work from there. Thanks, Nathan

• Choppy window movement in Gnome 3.4 on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have been using Gnome 3.2 since Ubuntu 11.10 was released and it has always been perfectly smooth and performed extremely well, much better than Unity. After doing a clean installation of Ubuntu 12.04, Gnome 3.4 performs less well. If just one window of a relatively simple application, such as Gnome Terminal, is opened and moved around, the movement is sometimes very choppy, but the rest of the time it's perfectly smooth. The times when it's choppy seem to be when part of the window goes off the bottom or right side of the screen. Also, if there are multiple windows open, it is almost always choppy. These facts suggest to me that it's something to do with the compositor. Unity works perfectly smoothly. Memory usage is only at about 500-600MB, out of 3GB, even with a few things open. The graphics card is the on-board Intel graphics on the Core i5 M450. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this problem? Thanks

  I've already went through all possible advices and still cannot start my Atheros AR9285 wireless card. I have a laptop Toshiba Portege Z830 where the WiFi already worked under Windows 7. But after migration on Ubuntu 12.10. I'm not able get it work. • error: you need to load kernel first

  I made a clean install on my Sony Vaio laptop, of Ubuntu 11.10 and when the installation was ready, it prompted to remove the usb I was installing the distro from, and press enter to reboot. After this reboot the first thing I got was the following error: error: couldn't read file error: you need to load the kernel first Press any key to continue.. After that it throws me back to the Grub select screen: Ubuntu, with linux 3.0.0-14-generic-pae recovery mode previous linux versions (none since I made a clean install) memory test If i choose the first option it shows only a black screen and never loads anything. If i reboot the same thing happens. Could I repair this using boot-repair? Is there any other way?   I installed ubuntu netbook edition on my netbook* expecting to get the best performance out of it, but apparently, that didn't turn out. Unity is a bit slow on it, and when I click on Files and folders it takes a while to load the respective interface and the bar at the top disappears and then loads in. Is this expected? Is there anything I can do to improve the performance? • How to get out of dependency hell

  I am doing this from memory from work. Basically, I have libjpeg-turbo8 installed. But I have libjpeg-turbo8:i386 installed at version xxx4.4 and libjpeg-turbo8:amd64 installed at version xxx4.3. I am not sure how this mismatch happened. I believe that 4.3 is the right version, so I would like to roll the 32 bit version back. apt-get install libjpeg-turbo8:i386xxxxxx4.3 did not work (as it was still complaining that it couldnt do anything because of the mismatch). Basically, I cant do anything with apt-get because this mismatch is causing dependency hell. What is the proper way to resolve this. The box is 64 bit 12.04.

• Unity: Render 2D textures on a 3D object's face

  I am not familiar with 3D graphics and I'd like to know what is the right way to render some 2D figures on different points of a wider face of a 3D object. My 3D object is just a cube representing a poker table. I have 2D png for players placeholders and I'd like to render these figures on the 3D object where needed. An alternative solution would be to render the whole face with a big picture containing all the placeholders figures. However it would be a waste of memory and thus less efficient. What do you suggest me?

Today's tip is on Storage and Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Question: I run Oracle Virtual Desktop 3.4.1 on Solaris and use a local ZFS storage pool.  How should I configure my ZFS ARC cache?  Answer by John Renko, Consulting Developer, Oracle: Oracle recommends about 5G of ARC cache per template in use to achieve up to a 90% disk read offload. Set your ARC min=max to reserve the maximum amount of your remaining memory for your running VMs. In /etc/system: set zfs:zfs_arc_min = 5368709120 set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 5368709120 The amount you need to reserve will depend on your template but this has proven to be a great start for a typical windows 7 VM running productivity applications.

• Is there a difference between multi-tasking and time-sharing?

  Just going over my school notes, my teacher identifies multi-tasking OS, and time-sharing OS as two different things. I really don't see a difference between the two. MULTI-TASKING: You load a number of programs in the memory and execute them. You execute another program if the time quantum allocated to the current program expires OR if it goes on to do I/O and leaves the CPU OR if it finishes execution. TIME-SHARING: the same,again. The same applies in case of serial processing and batch processing. Although they are the same, I guess the only difference would be the way in which control information is passed to the CPU. Maybe, and again MAYBE, in serial processing you need to provide the punch cards with all the processes while in batch, the entire batch uses the same set of control information. Like all the print jobs would have the same control information.

• Why don't smart phones have an auto-forget password feature? [closed]

  Storing passwords to external services (e.g. corporate email servers) on smart phones is very insecure, since phones are more easily stolen. Has any vendor implemented a feature to only cache a password in memory for a limited amount of time? After the time period has elapsed, the app would ask for the password again. EDIT: I should've clarified - I'm aware that many (most?) users are lazy and want to just "set it and forget it". The always-remember feature will probably always be present. I was curious about an option to enable auto-forget for the security-conscious.
