• Heroku taps push weirdness...

  I have the strangest experience using taps to move data between my machine and heroku. It works fine except that it seems to loose 0s directly behind the decimal place for my geo coordinates. Ie 50.0519322 for some reason gets set to 50.519322... no idea why. When I pull the data from the remote location ie. heroku db:pull... it works fine, all decimal places intact on my machine, however, when i push it back to the remote server it loses these zeros. Especially directly behind the decimal place, though I haven't noticed it elsewhere yet. At first I was storing the lat and lng as simply numeric but refined it to: change_column :places, :lat, :numeric, :precision => 15, :scale => 10 change_column :places, :lng, :numeric, :precision => 15, :scale => 10 With no result, any ideas what's going on? From the console on the remote server i get the lat as being: #<BigDecimal:2aebcc5967c0,'0.50519322E2',18(18)> and my machine as: #<BigDecimal:10232f7c8,'0.50519322E2',12(16)> which is also odd, the second one because it shows up as 50.0519322 when i edit it thru my view but when i do to_f via console it gives me 50.519322

  Folks, I need to maintain a C#/.Net desktop application. So, I need to set myself up with Windows(7?) and Visual Studio. My current development machine is a Macbook Pro and I would like to continue using it. Overall, I am considering the following recipe: Install VMWare Fusion or Parallels or VirtualBox for running the Windows OS Buy a version of Windows to develop on Buy Windows Developer tools Having been in the open source universe all this time, I am utterly unfamiliar with the options/packages in the Windows world. I could use some help on the following: Does the recipe above look fine, or do I need to change something? What is a good VM environment to buy/use? VirtualBox is free, but Parallels/VMWare promise Windows app that blend in with my Mac windows. Could use some help on this topic Does MSFT sell a package deal which has bare bones Windows 7 and the necessary dev tools, or do I need to buy the OS and dev tools separately? Since I only need Windows to churn this C# desktop application, What is the OS version and flavor or Visual Studio I should get? Thanks in advance for any pointers. -Raj

  Is there a good guide or tutorial for people who need to programmatically interact with dynamic websites? There's been a rash of Perl questions about that lately, and I haven't found a good resource to point people toward. I'm asking not because I need one but because I don't want to waste my time writing it if it already exists. Although I'm most interested in Perl, the extra tools and techniques are mostly the same. Typically, I see see these problems in people's questions: Handling, setting, and saving cookies Finding and interacting with forms Handling JavaScript inside your user-agent especially things like onLoad, onSumbit, and Ajax Using HTTP sniffer tools Using Web developer plugins in interactive browsers Interacting with DOM, screen scraping, etc. If there's no good tutorial, I'll add it to my list of things to do (unless someone else wants to do it :). Along the way, if you don't have a suggestion for an existing tutorial, please suggest the things that you think should be in a new one, including links, your favorite tools, and your own user-agent development experiences. I don't care about the particular language you use.

  I'm pretty new to Android development. Trying to accomplish something fairly simple -- change some displayed text when a timer ticks. Here's the potentially relevant code: CountDownTimer currentTimer; Resources res; TextView timerText; @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_exercise); res = getResources(); timerText = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.timer_text); } @Override protected void onStart() { super.onStart(); //"Get ready" countdown currentTimer = new CountDownTimer(5000, 1000) { @Override public void onTick(long millisUntilFinished) { timerText.setText("" + (int)Math.ceil(millisUntilFinished / 1000.0)); } @Override public void onFinish() { ... } }; currentTimer.start(); } This works fine on an emulated 4.2.2 device, but on a 4.1.2 device (both physical and emulated), the changed TextView appears as such while the countdown proceeds: If you can't tell, that's the numbers 5,4,3 overlayed. So, when I set a new string for the TextView, the new string is displayed but without replacing the old string. Any other TextViews used in my app behave in the same way. Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it? • Mercurial 1.5 pager on Windows

  I'm trying to set the pager used for Mercurial but the output is empty, even if I specify the command in the [pager] section or as the PAGER environment variable. I noticed that the command provided is launched with cmd.exe. Is this the cause of empty output, and if yes, what is the right syntax? Environment: Mercurial 1.5, Mecurial 1.4.3 hgrc: [extensions] pager = [pager] pager = d:\tools\less\less.exe Sample command lines (from Process Explorer): hg diff c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /c "d:\tools\less\less.exe 2> NUL:" d:\tools\less\less.exe UPDATE In pager.py, by replacing: sys.stderr = sys.stdout = util.popen(p, "wb") with sys.stderr = sys.stdout = subprocess.Popen(p, stdin = subprocess.PIPE, shell=False).stdin I managed to obtain the desired output for the hg status and diff. BUT, I'm sure it's wrong (or at least incomplete), and I have no control over the pager app (less.exe): the output is shown in the cmd.exe window, I can see the less prompt (:) but any further input is fed into cmd.exe. It seems that the pager app is still active in the background: after typing exit in the cmd.exe window, I have control over the pager app, and I can terminate it normally. • Do ruby on rails programmers refactor?

  I'm a Java programmer who started programming Ruby on Rails one year ago. I like the language, rails itself and the principles behind them. But something that bothers me is that Ruby programmers don't seem to refactor. I noticed that there is a big lack of tools for refactoring in Ruby / Rails. Some IDE's, like Aptana and RubyMine seem to offer some very basic refactoring, but nothing really big compared to Eclipse's Java refactorings. Then there is another fact: most railers (even the pros) prefer some lightweight editors, like VIM or TextMate, instead of IDEs. Well, with these tools you just get zero refactoring (only regex with find/replace). This leaves me this impression that rails programmers don't refactor. It might be just a false impression, of course, but I would like to hear the opinion of people who work professionally with ruby on rails. Do you refactor? If you do, how do you do it,with which tools? If not, why not?

  I am trying to deploy a report to the Reporting Services Server but keep running up against this error: An error occurred during client rendering. An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Cannot create a connection to data source 'dataSource1'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection) Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'DOMAIN\useradmin', error code 0x5. Here’s my situation: Everything is being ran using DOMAIN\useradmin and the report is using a remote database. Reporting Services and SQL Server are both ran under DOMAIN\useradmin. DOMAIN\useradmin is a windows AD login and is part of the server machine Administrators group. My test report is using a data source model that in turn is using a data source that is connection to a database on a different SQL Server. The data source is using “Credentials stored securely in the report server” with the options “Use as Windows credentials when connecting to the data source” and “Impersonate the authenticated user after a connection has been made to the data source.” I am using the credentials of DOMAIN\useradmin that is the db owner of the remote database. DOMAIN\useradmin is assigned the roles, System Administrator, System User and Browser, Content Manager, My Reports, Publisher, Report Builder. So if everything is being run under an über AD account, why I am getting this Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'DOMAIN\useradmin' error? Under normal circumstances , an AD login with Publisher permissions will developing reports using a datasource model created by DOMAIN\useradmin but using one of the remote database’s users which is mapped from yet another AD login. I found out that other people have had the same problem. The problem seems to be related to /etc/xinet.d/. Problem: unable to push my local branch to my master branch at Github I run git push origin master I get fatal: 'origin' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly The error message suggests me that the branch 'origin' is not in my local git repository. This way, Git stops connecting to Github. This is strange, since I have not removed the branch 'origin'. My git tree is dev * master ticgit remotes/Math/Math remotes/Math/master remotes/origin/master remotes/Masi/master How can you push your local branch to Github, while you have a teamMate's branch in your local Git? VonC's answer solves the main problem. I put a passphares to my ssh keys. • How to remove accidental branch in TortoiseHg?

  (I am a relative newcomer to TortoiseHg, so bear with me :-) I use TortoiseHg on two machines to talk to my remote source repository. I made changes on one machine, committed them, and attempted to push them to the remote repository BUT I forgot to first do a pull to get the latest code first. The push gave me a few lines of output, suggesting I may have forgotten to pull first (true!) and mentioned something like "abort: push creates new remote branches...". So I did a pull, which added several nodes to the head of my graph in the repository explorer. The problem is that the push I tried to do is now showing as a branch in the repository explorer. Looking from the server side (codeplex), it shows no sign of my attempted push, indicating this accidental branch is still local on my machine. How could I remove this accidental branch? I tried selecting that node in the graph then doing "revert" but it did not seem to do anything. I am wondering if it would be simplest to just discard my directory tree on my local machine and do a completely new, clean pull from the server...?

• Documentation and Build system for Mono/C#

  I'm starting out on a new project and a team member has decided to use C# as the implementation language. I don't have a lot of experience in C#, but a brief reading shows that it's very capable of being a complete cross-platform vm. Beyond the language, I've been having trouble selecting tools and workflows for managing the code as the project grows. It should be fairly small (<10K lines) but I would like to have the ability to generate documentation as the project grows, manage any external dependencies that we decide to use, and automate builds and testing. I am wondering what tools are commonly used or considered best practices for this language. I am mainly concerned with how would a build system potentially work on *nix as well as windows? Are there C# specific tools or is Make more common? In addition, I'd like to use a dvcs, but it doesn't look like Visual Studio and MonoDevelop support the same ones. What's the common vcs of choice for C#? For testing sort of Unit testing is available for C#/Mono? Finally, I know that there are good doc generators, but with the question of the build system, I would really like to have that just be a single step in the build similar to how testing is a step. Normally I'd automate with Hudson, but I am wondering if there is something more specific to the platform. Overall, I'd love to see a solution that provides a decent workflow on both windows and *nix without a heavy admin burden. I am pretty sure this is the holy grail of project management, so anything that puts me on that path is awesome.

• Textually diffing JSON

  As part of my release processes, I have to compare some JSON configuration data used by my application. As a first attempt, I just pretty-printed the JSON and diff'ed them (using kdiff3 or just diff). As that data has grown, however, kdiff3 confuses different parts in the output, making additions look like giant modifies, odd deletions, etc. It makes it really hard to figure out what is different. I've tried other diff tools, too (meld, kompare, diff, a few others), but they all have the same problem. Despite my best efforts, I can't seem to format the JSON in a way that the diff tools can understand. Example data: [ { "name": "date", "type": "date", "nullable": true, "state": "enabled" }, { "name": "owner", "type": "string", "nullable": false, "state": "enabled", } ...lots more... ] The above probably wouldn't cause the problem (the problem occurs when there begin to be hundreds of lines), but thats the gist of what is being compared. Thats just a sample; the full objects are 4-5 attributes, and some attributes have 4-5 attributes in them. The attribute names are pretty uniform, but their values pretty varied. In general, it seems like all the diff tools confuse the closing "}" with the next objects closing "}". I can't seem to break them of this habit. I've tried adding whitespace, changing indentation, and adding some "BEGIN" and "END" strings before and after the respective objects, but the tool still get confused.

The question is in regards to "someurl", which is a path to a local xml file containing the geographic information(georss simple format). I've realized this feed and the map must be hosted in the same domain, so I've created a generic handler that reads the remote feed and returns it in the same format. var veLayerSpec = new VEShapeSourceSpecification(VEDataType.GeoRSS, "/somelocalhandler.ashx", layer); When I do this, I get the VEMap error("z is null"). This is the same error one would receive when trying to access a remote feed. When I copy the feed into a local xml file(ie, "feed.xml") there is no error. The order of operations is currently: remote feed - local handler - VEMap import If I'm over complicating this procedure, let me know! I'm a bit new to the Bing Maps API and might have missed something. Any assistance is appreciated.

  After working for several weeks with a half dozen different branches and merges, on both my laptop and work and my desktop at home, my history has gotten a bit convoluted. For example, I just did a fetch, then merged master with origin/master. Now, when I do git show-branches, the output looks like this: ! [login] Changed domain name. ! I would like to clean this up with a git rebase. I created a new branch, rebase-master, for this purpose, and on this branch tried git rebase <common-ancestor>. However, I have to resolve many conflicts, and the end result on branch rebase-master no longer matches the corresponding version on master, which has already been tested and works! I thought I saw a solution to this somewhere but can't find it anymore. Does anyone know how to do this? Or will these convoluted ref names go away when I start deleting un-needed branches that I have already merged with? I am the sole developer on this project, so there is no one else who will be affected.
