• Why load increase ,ssd iops increase but cpu iowait decrease?

  There is a strange thing on my server which has a mysql running on it. The QPS is more than 4000 but TPS is less than 20. The server load is more than 80 and cpu usr is more than 86% but iowait is less than 8%. The disk iops is more than 16000 and util of disk is more than 99%. When the QPS decreases, the load decreases, the cpu iowait increases. • Best Practices for Source Control Dependencies

  How do you handle source control setup of a project that has dependency on a separate framework or library? For example, Project A uses Framework B. Should Project A also include the code from Framework B in its repository? Is there a way for it to be included automatically from a different repository or would I have to updated it manually? What are the general approaches are usually taken for this scenario? Assume that I control the repositories for both Project A and Framework B and that the source code for both is not compiled. Any resources or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently using Subversion (on a very basic level), but I would like to switch to Mercurial so that I can try out Kiln with Fogbugz. Edit: In Mercurial, would you use parent repositories for this function?

• Recommendations for keeping a build server updated

  As a guy who frequently switches between QA, build and operations, I keep running into the issue of what to do about operating system updates on the build server. The dichotomy is the same on Windows, Linux, MacOS or any other o/s that can update itself via the internet: The QA team wants to keep the build server exactly as it is from the beginning of the product release cycle to the end, since installing updates could destabilize the server and means that successive builds aren't made against the same baseline. The ops team wants the software to be deployed on a system with all the latest security patches; this can mean that the software isn't deployed on exactly the same version of the o/s that it was built on. I usually mitigate this by taking release candidate builds and installing them on a test server that has a completely up-to-date o/s, repeating the automated tests that are run on the build server and doing some additional system level testing to make sure everything looks good before deployment. However, this seems inefficient to me; does anyone have a better way ?

• Build and render infinite hierarchical category tree from self-referential category table

  I have a Categories table in which each category has a ParentId that can refer to any other category's CategoryId that I want to display as multi-level HTML list, like so: <ul class="tree"> <li>Parent Category <ul> <li>1st Child Category <!-- more sub-categories --> </li> <li>2nd Child Category <!-- more sub-categories --> </li> </ul> </li> </ul> Presently I am recursively rendering a partial view and passing down the next category. It works great, but it's wrong because I'm executing queries in a view. How can I render the list into a tree object and cache it for quick display every time I need a list of all hierarchical categories?

Expected result is like Name Salary PA 15000 (Pittsburgh + others(if any)) Pittusburgh 15000 (Accounts + HR) Accounts 11000 (Alex + Robin) Alex 6000 (direct values) Robin 5000 HR 4000 Robert 4000 In my production environment, hierarchy table may contain 23000+ rows and fact table may contain 300,000+ rows. So, I thought of providing any level of groupid to the query to retrieve just its children and its corresponding aggregated value. Any better solution?

  I'm trying export records from SQL Server 2008 to mdb file using OpenDataSource. It works when I log in using Windows authentication. But it fails when I use SQL Server authentication. This is the error i get OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "(null)" returned message "Could not delete from specified tables.". Msg 7320, Level 16, State 2, Procedure EXPORT_Employee, Line 110 Cannot execute the query "DELETE FROM employee_export " against OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "(null)". • Entity Framework 4 relationship management in POCO Templates - More lazy than FixupCollection?

  I've been taking a look at EF4 POCO templates in beta 2. The FixupCollection looks fine for maintaining the model correctness after updating the relationship collection property (i.e. product.Orders it would set the order.Product reference ). But what about support for handling the scenario when some of those Order objects are removed from the context? The use-case of maintaining cascading deletes in the in-memory model. The old Typed DataSet model used to do this by performing the query through the container to derive the relationship results. Like the DataSet, this would require a reference to the ObjectContext inside the entity class so that it could query the top-level Order collection. Better support for Separation of Concerns in the ObjectContext would be required. It looks like EF is not suited to this use-case that DataSets did out of the box.... am I right?

• CSS Frameworks like 960 and Blueprint?

  This is at the framework level, not dealing directly with CSS, so posting to SO. I just learned about the existence of CSS frameworks. 960 Grid System seems pretty awesome, then I found Blueprint, which seems to do the same thing and more. Is there a better word than "framework" to categorize this? Are there any other products in this category? In response to one of the comments http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1483565/link-to-a-site-designed-using-a-css-framework-blueprint-960-etc, "how many example frameworks do you want? he just listed two of them.", I'd love to have more than two examples, unless those are the only two in the running. Blueprint, which is "the original CSS framework" 960 Grid System, which is a tool to have a grid underlying your screen. YUI 2: Grids, similar to 960? The rest of YUI is more similar to JQuery?

I have scouted the internet for the various scaling algorithms but am not sure where to introduce the scaling. So should I do the the scaling after the image is converted into bmp or should I do this during the decoding at the MCU level. am confused :( If you guys have some information to help me out, its appreciated. any material to read, source code to analyse etc....

• Are tile overlays possible with the iPhone's MapKit

  I already have a tile source set up for use with the Google Maps JavaScript API. I am trying to translate this for use with the iPhone MapKit. I have correctly implemented the javascript zooming levels into mapkit. Whenever - (void)mapView:(MKMapView *)mapView regionDidChangeAnimated:(BOOL)animated is called, I snap the region to the nearest zoom level based on the same center point. Is it possible to implement a solution possibly with CATiledLayer to implement a tiling solution. Does the iPhone use the standard 256x256 tiles like google maps does natively? Any direction or help on this would be greatly appreciated. I would rather not waste a couple weeks trying to implement this if it's not possible.

  I have got an application that is not compatible to work using IE8 browser. I am looking for a way to to configure Tomcat on which this application run, so the pages could be read by IE8 and treated as if they are IE7 or IE6 By googling so far I found a possible suggestion which say to add to the http response the header: X-UA-Compatible: IE=EmulateIE7 here that tell IE8 to be like IE7. The problem is that this way requires adding a filter that should be added on application level. I'd like to know if any of you is familiar with a more generic way that Tomcat enables to send its http content to be IE7 (or IE6) compatible ?

• Basic HTTP Authentication using Obj C and Xcode.

  Hi Everyone, I am hoping someone can help me with a question i have relating to Basic HTTP Authentication in an Xcode 2.3 application. Basically i have a PHP page that is on our server and when called with certain parameters returns data relating to the servers condition etc. i have managed to get a small Xcode application working where by it reads the data from the page and populates an NSTextView with the data. however to make sure this information stays safe i have setup basic HTTP Authentication on the page, but i cannot work out how to provide the username and password in XCode. here is my code to retrieve the page.   I've come across, in passing, several suites of functions, widgets, frameworks, etc. that seek to produce a desktop like experience on the web. Most are JavaScript and CSS tools that handle web content on an emulation of the desktop-paradigmed UI, e.g. TreeView + Content == Explorer. Is there such a library nicely compatible with ASP.NET Forms without weeks of grief? I'll also settle for something similar, but instead of native ASP.NET, a library for any of the open source CMS products for ASP.NET. (Umbraco is at the top of my list, followed by mojoPortal. I aspire to the level of coding their creators easily demonstrate in the product. [PS, I don't want a 'desktop' ux per se, just light and simple dynamic layout for drag 'n drop, dock windows, a dock bar?.. and other fancy magic.

  I am looking for some kind of analyzer tool for log files generated by log4j files. I am looking something more advanced than grep? What are you using for log file analysis? I am looking for following kinds of features: The tool should tell me how many time a given log statement or a stack trace has occurred, preferably with support for some kinds of patterns (eg. number of log statements matching 'User [a-z]* logged in'). Support for several files since I am using log rolling Hot spot analysis: find if there is a some time period when there is unusually high number of log statements Either command-line or GUI are fine Open Source is preferred but I am also interested in commercial offerings My log4j configuration uses org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout with pattern %d %p %c - %m%n but that could be adapted for analyzer tool.

I have two database tables with thousands of data.. a table for "skills" and a table for "skills categories" every "skill" belongs to a skills categorie. a "skill" is , physicaly, a varchar(200) field in the database, where there is some text describing the skill.   At work, we have a client-server system where clients submit requests to a web server through HTTP. The server-side processing can sometimes take more than 60 seconds, which is the proxy timeout value set by our company's IT staff and cannot be changed. Is there a way to keep the HTTP connection alive for longer than 60 seconds (preferably for an arbitrarily long period of time), either by heartbeat messages from the server or the client? I know there are HTTP 1.1 persistent connections, but that is not what I want. Does HTTP have a keep-alive capability, or would this have to be done at the TCP level through some sort of socket option?

  I'm trying to update some simple Visual FoxPro tables with SQL Server. I've created a linked server with the following: sp_addlinkedserver @server = 'UTIL', @srvproduct = 'VFP', @provider = 'VFPOLEDB', @datasrc = 'L:\M2MDATA\Util\util.dbc' GO And the following works: select * from UTIL...utcomp However, I cannot use the following statement: update util...utcomp set fmaddress = '123 Elvis Dr.' where fcsqldb = 'M2MDATA01' I receive the error: OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "util" returned message "Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.". Msg 7333, Level 16, State 2, Line 2 Cannot fetch a row using a bookmark from OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "util". I have the latest version (9.0) installed so I should have the latest provider. Am I doing something wrong? Is it not possible to update VFP from SQL?

• What is the C# static fields naming convention?

  I have recently started using ReSharper which is a fantastic tool. Today I came across a naming rule for static fields, namely prefixing with an underscore ie. private static string _myString; Is this really the standard way to name static variables? If so is it just personal preference and style, or does it have some sort of lower level impact? Eg Compilation JIT etc? Where does this style originate from? I have always associated it with C++, is that correct?

• Oracle Linked Server error: ORA-12640: Authentication adapter initialization failed

  I have a linked server on SQL Server that talks to Oracle. Executing the following sql statement using Openquery SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(finance, 'select * from KFRI.VW_XREF_PROJECTS') will get error as the following: OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "finance" returned message "ORA-12640: Authentication adapter initialization failed". Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "finance". I tried to set : SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE) in {$ORACLE_HOME}\NETWORK\ADMIN\sqlnet.ora. It did not help. What's interesting is my coworker is able to execute the exactly same query successfully on his machine without a hitch. Any tips on how to fix this is greatly appreciated!!
