  Hello I've written an 'auto-suggest' textbox user control in WPF. It behaves a little bit like the 'To' list in Hotmail, allowing the user to enter a list of items, offering suggestions when it is able. The main controls are a a text box, a wrap panel and a list box. The text box captures user input. The wrap panel contains the text box and shows previous entries. The list box is used to show suggestions. Most of the time, the list box is hidden. I'm using multiple instances of my control in a stack panel. My problem is that when the list box is shown, it is included in the measurement of the height of the control. This forces the following controls in the stack panel to be shifted down, as these pictures demonstrate: I've tried overriding the measurement of my control so not to include the list box, but this just results in the list box not being visible. What I want to do is make the list box overlay any subsequent controls in the stack panel, like a combo box's drop down would do. However, I really don't know how to do this. Any ideas? Thanks Sandy

• protobuf-net: Issues deserializing DataMember fields in lieu of read-only property

  I'm having issues deserializing certain properties of ORM-generated entities using protobuf-net. I suspect something in the way the ORM manages serialization attributes on read-only properties (uses public backing fields with DataMember attributes & [de]serializes) those instead of the corresponding read-only property, which has an IgnoreDataMember attribute). Guid properties might have issues of their own, but the field vs. property thing is my working theory now. Here's a simplified example of the code. Say I have a class, Account with an AccountID read-only guid, and an AccountName read-write string. I serialize & immediately deserialize a clone. In this scenario I get one of two results (depending on the entity, haven't isolated the specific commonality yet). The deserialized clone either: ...has a different AccountID from the original, or ...throws an Incorrect wire-type deserializing Guid exception while deserializing. Here's example usage... Account acct = new Account() { AccountName = "Bob's Checking" }; Debug.WriteLine(acct.AccountID.ToString()); using (MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream()) { ProtoBuf.Serializer.Serialize<Account>(ms, acct); Debug.WriteLine(Encoding.UTF8.GetString(ms.GetBuffer())); ms.Position = 0; Account clone = ProtoBuf.Serializer.Deserialize<Account>(ms); Debug.WriteLine(clone.AccountID.ToString()); } And here's an example ORM'd class (simplified; hopefully haven't removed the cause of the issue in the process). I've tried protobuf-net with lists vs. single instances, different prefix styles, etc., but always either get the 'incorrect wire type ... Guid' exception, or the Guid property (field) not deserializing correctly. So the specific questions are, is there a quick workaround for this, and/or is there an explanation for both of outcomes 1 & 2 above, and/or can protobuf-net somehow be corralled into behaving like WCF in cases like this (i.e. follow the same DataMember/IgnoreDataMember semantics)? We hope not to have to create a protobuf dependency directly in the entity layer; if that's the case, we'll probably create proxy DTO entities with all public properties having protobuf attributes. (This is a subjective issue I have with all declarative serialization models; it's a ubiquitous pattern, but IMO, "normal" should be to have objects and serialization contracts decoupled.) Thanks!

  I am trying to get validation to work in ASP.NET MVC 2, but without much success. I have a complex class containing a large number of fields. (Don't ask - this is oneo f those real-world situations best practices can't touch) This would normally be my Model and is a LINQ-to-SQL generated class. (Am aware t is similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1260562/asp-net-mvc-model-viewmodel-validation but that post seems to talk about xVal. I have no idea what that is and suspect it is for MVC 1)

In the runtime, Exception is thrown in jquery.tinymce.js file. Error Message : `Unhandled exception at line 86, column 11 in http://localhost:1706/Home/About 0x800a01b6 - Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method` And give me two options, Continue or Break . If i continue, the page loads with features as i mentioned earlier. If i Break, then it stays in the jquery.tinymce.js file with a yellow text-background. I have no experience with Javascript/jquery. And new in ASP .NET MVC 4.0, actually this is my first try of web application in .net. I updated jquery from nuGet. What could be the possible ways to solve it?

• Dynamically created "CheckBoxList" in placeholder controls throwing null reference exception error d

  I have a web form that will dynamically create a number of checkboxlist filled with data based on the number of row in database. • ASP.NET Send Image Attachment With Email Without Saving To Filesystem

  I'm trying to create a form that will send an email with an attached image and am running into some problems. The form I am creating is rather large so I have created a small test form for the purpose of this question. The email will send and the attachment will exist on the email, but the image is corrupt or something as it is not viewable. Also.. I do not want to save the image to the filesystem. You may think it is convoluted to take the image file from the fileupload to a stream, but this is due to the fact that the real form I am working on will allow multiple files to be added through a single fileupload and will be saved in session, thus the images will not be coming from the fileupload control directly on submit. • asp.net content page has problem with CascadingDropDown.

  I have asp.net content page with an update panel, asp.net controls with ajax extenders and it has asp.net button with event click. everything is working ok exept one case. I have 3 DropDownList with CascadingDropDown extenders. when I click the button without selecting anything from DropDownLists then click on the button the event click will work OK but if I select anything my page will respond when I click on the button. When I try to deploy the site to Windows 2008 R2 , IIS 7.5 , the url always return 404. First, my application pool is running on .Net 4.0, and Integration mode. • mediaelement.js play/pause on click controls don't work

  I need to play and pause the video player if any part of the video is clicked, so I implemented something like: $("#promoPlayer").click(function() { $("#promoPlayer").click(function() { if(this.paused){ this.play(); } else { this.pause(); } }); ...but now the controls of the video won't pause/play. You can see it in action here(http://175.107.134.113:8080/). The video is the second slide on the main carousel at the top. I suspect I'm now getting 2 onclick events one from my code above and a second on the actual pause/play button. I don't understand how the actual video controls work, because when I inspect the element, I just see a tag. If I could differentiate the controls, then perhaps I might have figured out a solution by now. Anyone know how I should have done this, or is my solution ok. If my solutions ok, how do I intercept a click on the control, so that I only have one click event to pause / play? If you look on the media element home page, they have a big play button, complete with mouseOver, but I can't see how they have done that? Can someone else help?

• Silverlight performance with many loaded controls

  I have a SL application with many DataGrids (from Silverlight Toolkit), each on its own view. If several DataGrids are opened, changing between views (TabItems, for example) takes a long time (few seconds) and it freezes the whole application (UI thread). The more DataGrids are loaded, the longer the change takes. These DataGrids that slow the UI chanage might be on other places in the app and not even visible at that moment. But once they are opened (and loaded with data), they slow showing other DataGrids. Note that DataGrids are NOT disposed and then recreated again, they still remain in memory, only their parent control is being hidden and visible again. I have profiled the application. It shows that agcore.dll's SetValue function is the bottleneck. Unfortunately, debug symbols are not available for this Silverlight native library responsible for drawing. The problem is not in the DataGrid control - I tried to replace it with XCeed's grid and the performance when changing views is even worse. Do you have any idea how to solve this problem? Why more opened controls slow down other controls? I have created a sample that shows this issue: http://cenud.cz/PerfTest.zip UPDATE: Using VS11 profiler on the sample provided suggests that the problem could be in MeasureOverride being called many times (for each DataGridCell, I guess). But still, why is it slower as more controls are loaded elsewhere? Is there a way to improve the performance?

• Why does Farseer 2.x store temporaries as members and not on the stack? (.NET)

  UPDATE: This question refers to Farseer 2.x. The newer 3.x doesn't seem to do this. I'm using Farseer Physics Engine quite extensively at the moment, and I've noticed that it seems to store a lot of temporary value types as members of the class, and not on the stack as one might expect. • How to handle lookup data in a C# ASP.Net MVC4 application?

  I am writing an MVC4 application to track documents we have on file for our clients. I'm using code first, and have created models for my objects (Company, Document, etc...). I am now faced with the topic of document expiration. Business logic dictates certain documents will expire a set number of days past the document date. For example, Document A might expire in 180 days, Document 2 in 365 days, etc... I have a class for my documents as shown below (simplified for this example). What is the best way for me to create a lookup for expiration values? I want to specify documents of type DocumentA expire in 30 days, type DocumentB expire in 75 days, etc... I can think of a few ways to do this: Lookup table in the database I can query New property in my class (DaysValidFor) which has a custom getter that returns different values based on the DocumentType A method that takes in the document type and returns the number of days and I'm sure there are other ways I'm not even thinking of. My main concern is a) not violating any best practices and b) maintainability. Are there any pros/cons I need to be aware of for the above options, or is this a case of "just pick one and run with it"? One last thought, right now the number of days is a value that does not need to be stored anywhere on a per-document basis -- however, it is possible that business logic will change this (i.e., DocumentA's are 30 days expiration by default, but this DocumentA associated with Company XYZ will be 60 days because we like them). • Acceptable GC frequency for a SlimDX/Windows/.NET game?

  I understand that the Windows GC is much better than the Xbox/WP7 GC, being that it's generational and multithreaded -- so I don't need to worry quite as much about avoiding memory allocation. SlimDX even has some unavoidable functions that generate some amount of garbage (specifically, MapSubresource creates DataBoxes), yet people don't seem to be too upset about it. I'd like to use some functional paradigms to write my code too, which also means creating objects like closures and monads. I know premature optimization isn't a good thing, but are there rules of thumb or metrics that I can follow to know whether I need to cut down on allocations? Is, say, one gen 0 GC per frame too much? One thing that has me stumped is object promotions. Gen 0 GCs will supposedly finish within a millisecond or two, but if I'm understanding correctly, it's the gen 1 and 2 promotions that start to hurt. I'm not too sure how I can predict/prevent these.

• How to embed an authorize.net payment gateway form into a single page website with one item for sale?

Rather than having the button I would like the order form to be on the single page with a field for quantity. At first I imagined that there would be a simple form that I could embed however it looks like that I need a full integration into my website through the Advanced Integration Method (AIM) which is much more complicated then I wanted.
