• Using IIS Application Request Routing (ARR) for ASP.NET MVC

  I use a simple ASP.NET MVC web (the template you use when you create a new site) and the web works as expected in my live environment. I now try to use IIS Application Request Routing version 2. I have a rule that send all reuqests to a different server that match a rule. The settings are a bit like this: http://blogs.iis.net/wonyoo/archive/2008/07/09/application-request-routing-arr-as-a-reverse-proxy.aspx My rule is just a bit different it is /shop(.*). Only requests that contain shop are send to a different server. I have to use rewrite, not redirect (The same as in the Picture) This works as long as the web the original requests go to is no ASP.NET MVC web. I tried to use a plain htm file in the webfolder and it worked. If put a compiled ASP.NET application into the webfolder it worked. But as soon as I put an ASP.NET MVC web into the folder, request arr served by this application. My understanding is that the ARR should kick in before the web application gets the chance to handle the request. Did anybody use ARR sucessfully as a reverse proxy for a ASP.NET MVC web? EDIT Here is the resulting web config when the rewrite roule is entered.   Hi all: I've been trying to programmatically copy custom content type and its custom columns from one web to another for some time now, and every time I get some sort of error or exception. After yet more tries, I received another strange and cryptic exception from Sharepoint after clicking onto a newly copied custom column in a custom content type. I checked the logs, and this is what I got: Failed to find the content type schema for ct-1033-0x1000blahblahblahcontenttypeId while caching feature data. Unknown SPRequest error occurred. More informationL 0x8000ffff Unable to locate the xml-definition for CType with SPContentTypeId '0x0100MorecontenttypeId', exception: Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: Catastrophic failure(Exception from HRESULT: 0x8000FFFF (E_UNEXPECTED)) ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x8000FFFF): Catastrophic failure... ... at Microsoft.SharePoint.Library.SPRequestInternalClass.GetGlobalContentTypeXml(String bstrUrl, Int32 type, UInt 32 lcid, Object varIdBytes... It failed to find quite a few content type schema. I'm confused with what Sharepoint is trying to do here, and why a simple process of copying a custom content type from one web to another just wouldn't work in contrast to the information found on the web e.g. this. • Reuse security code between WCF and MVC.NET

  First the background: I jumped into MVC.NET from the Java MVC world, so my implementation below is possibly cheating, I don't know. I avoided fooling with a custom membership provider and I just implemented the base code needed to authenticate and load roles in my LogOn action. Typically I just need to check roles programatically, and have no use for all of the other membership features, so I didn't originally think I needed a full Membership provider. I have a successful WCF project with a custom authentication and authorization layer that I did at least write per the proper API. I implemented it with custom IPrincipal, UserNamePasswordValidator and IAuthorizationPolicy classes to load from an Oracle database. In my WCF services, I use declarative security: [PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Role="ADMIN")]. The question (on the ASP.NET/MCV.NET side): All my reading indicates I should implement a custom Membership/Roles provider, and use [Authorize(Roles="ADMIN")] on my controller actions. At this point, I don't have a true Membership provider, but I'm using the same User class that implements the IPrincipal interface that works with the WCF security. I plan to share common code between the WCF and ASP.NET modules. So my LogOn action is not using the FormsService (and I assume this is bad). I had commented it out, and just used my "UserService" to access the Oracle db. Can I stick the IPrincipal (User) into the CurrentContext or HttpContext? Can I integrate the custom IPrincipal I've already created without writing a full Membership/Roles Provider? I currently stick the User object into the session and access it from all MVC.NET controllers with "CurrentUser" property which grabs it from the session on demand. But this doesn't work with the [Authorize] attribute; I assume that is because it knows nothing about my custom Principal in the session, and is instead using whatever FormsService.SignIn() produces. I also found that session timeouts screw up the login redirect, the user doesn't get forwarded, instead we get a null exception accessing User from the session, and I assume it is related to my "skipping steps" to get a quick implementation. • Can not delete row from MySQL

  Howdy all, I've got a table, which won't delete a row. Specifically, when I try to delete any row with a GEO_SHAPE_ID over 150000000 it simply does not disappear from the DB. I have tried: SQLyog to erase it. DELETE FROM TABLE WHERE GEO_SHAPE_ID = 150000042 (0 rows affected). UNLOCK TABLES then 2. As far as I am aware, bigint is a valid candidate for auto_increment. Anyone know what could be up? You gotta help us, Doc. We’ve tried nothin’ and we’re all out of ideas! DJS. PS. Here is the table construct and some sample data just for giggles. • IIS: No Session being handed out, but only in production

  I've reproduced this in a simple project - details below. It's a WCF service in ASP.NET compatibility mode. What I'm seeing is that when run on the dev machine (Win7), a HTTP session id is available inside the service operation (HttpContext.Current.Session is non-null). But when deployed to the server (Win2k8R2), I get "No session". On both machines the app is configured to use the classic app pool, and the app pools themselves are configured identically as far as I can tell. The only differences I can discern between the two applications is that on the dev box, under "Handler Mappings", ISAPI-dll is disabled (not on the server), and on the server there's a spurious handler called "AboMapperCustom-7105160" (does not exist on the dev box). What should I be looking at next? Am I missing something head-slappingly simple? • VSDBCMD deployment for additions to third party databases

  We have some custom objects (stored procedures etc) in an SQL Server 2005 database belonging to an ERP system. The custom objects are in different schemas to the ERP objects. We're using Database Edition .dbproj projects and vsdbcmd deployment for all our custom application databases and would like to similarly manage our custom objects in the ERP database. It's not clear how this can be done without either: Importing all ERP objects (~4000 tables) into the .dbproj and manually keeping them in sync with ERP development. Visual Studio fell over the only time I tried importing these, so I've no idea whether it can actually handle a project of this size. Somehow excluding the ERP schemas (there are two) from the diff process to ensure they don't get dropped by vsdbcmd. I haven't found any documentation which suggests this is possible. I'm aware of the IgnoreDefaultSchema setting, but there are two schemas I need to ignore and I'm not comfortable with the 'default schema' approach - deployment by different users could be disasterous. Has anyone managed to successfully use .dbproj & vsdbcmd for custom additions to a third party database? If not, how do you manage SQL source control & deployment?

• Why isn't my new object being seen? C#

  I am getting ready to take a class at a college on C#. I have been reading up on it a lot and decided to start a fun project. Here is what my project consists of: Main Control Form Configuration Form Arduino Program.cs calls Configuration.cs at start. This is where pin modes for the Arduino are set and where a timer is set. When I set these values, they get sent to MainControl.cs. When I hit the "Save" button in Configuration.cs, a MainControl.cs object is created [[I am correct in that?]] All of those values that were sent by Configuration.cs had corresponding setters that set private static variables in MainControl.cs [[ I don't really know if that is the preferred way, I am most definetly open to any suggestion anyone has]] MainControl.cs uses its default constructor, and this constructor calls a method that creates an arduino object from one of the private variables (serialPort) [[ Using this Arduino class Firmata.NET ]] When the arduino object is created, I know (I guess I do) because the form takes a few seconds to come up (As opposed to not using serial port) My problem is this: I do not understand why nothing can see the object I have been very wordy, I apologize if I wasn't concise. • Updates to NSDictionary attribute in CoreData not saving

  I have created an Entity in CoreData that includes a Transformable attribute type implemented as an NSDictionary. The NSDictionary attribute only contains values of a custom class. The properties of the custom class are all of type NSString. The custom class complies with NSCoding implementing: -(void)encodeWithCoder:(NSCoder*)coder; -(id)initWithCoder:(NSCoder *)coder When saving the Entity for the first time all attributes including the Transformable (NSDictionary) type are properly saved in the DB. When the same Entity is fetched from the DB and updated (including the Transformable attribute) it seems to be updated properly. However, when the app is closed and then reopened fetching the Entity does not show the updated Transformable attribute-type though the rest of the attributes of type NSDate and NSString are up-to-date. The Transformable attribute is the original saved value not the updated value. Is this a problem with KVO or am I missing something else when trying to save an NSDictionary filled with a custom class to CoreData?

• Faking a dynamic schema in Core Data?

  From reading the Apple Docs on Core Data, I've learned that you should not use Core Data when you need a dynamic schema. If I wanted to provide the user the ability to create their own properties, in a core data model would it work if I created some "dummy" attributes like "custom decimal 1", "custom decimal 2", "custom text 1", "custom text 2" etc that the user could name and use for their own purposes? Obviously this won't work for relationships, but for simple properties it seems like a reasonable workaround. Will creating a bunch of dummy attributes on my entities that go unused by most users noticeably decrease performance for them? Have any of you tried something like this? Thanks!

• iPhone and Core Data: how to retain user-entered data between updates?

  Consider an iPhone application that is a catalogue of animals. The application should allow the user to add custom information for each animal -- let's say a rating (on a scale of 1 to 5), as well as some notes they can enter in about the animal. However, the user won't be able to modify the animal data itself. Assume that when the application gets updated, it should be easy for the (static) catalogue part to change, but we'd like the (dynamic) custom user information part to be retained between updates, so the user doesn't lose any of their custom information. We'd probably want to use Core Data to build this app. Let's also say that we have a previous process already in place to read in animal data to pre-populate the backing (SQLite) store that Core Data uses. We can embed this database file into the application bundle itself, since it doesn't get modified. When a user downloads an update to the application, the new version will include the latest (static) animal catalogue database, so we don't ever have to worry about it being out of date. But, now the tricky part: how do we store the (dynamic) user custom data in a sound manner? My first thought is that the (dynamic) database should be stored in the Documents directory for the app, so application updates don't clobber the existing data. Am I correct? My second thought is that since the (dynamic) user custom data database is not in the same store as the (static) animal catalogue, we can't naively make a relationship between the Rating and the Notes entities (in one database) and the Animal entity (in the other database). In this case, I would imagine one solution would be to have an "animalName" string property in the Rating/Notes entity, and match it up at runtime. Is this the best way to do it, or is there a way to "sync" two different databases in Core Data?

• Log4Net GetLogger creates rolling files even for the unreferenced files

  Hi, I have a C# solution that contains three executables. I have each of these three executables sharing the same log4net configuration file. At startup of each of the executable, they retrieve a logger (one logger per executable, as per configuration file further below). When one of the executable performs Log.GetLogger(), it creates all the rolling files instead of only the one rolling file that is referred to as appender-ref in the executable's logger configuration. For instance, when I startup my sending daemon executable, it performs Log.GetLogger("SendingDaemonLogger") which creates 3 files Log/RuleScheduler.txt, Log/NotificationGenerator.txt and Log/NotificationSender.txt instead of only the desired Log/NotificationSender.txt. Then when I startup another of the executables, for instance the rule scheduler daemon, this other process cannot write in Log/RuleScheduler.txt because it has been created and locked by the sending daemon process. I am guessing that there may be three different solutions to my problem: The GetLogger should only create the rolling file appenders that are referenced in the config I should have one config file per executable, this way each config file could list only one rolling file appender and starting each of the executable would not create the rolling files of the other daemons. I am however reluctant to do this because some of the configuration (SMTP appender, console appender) is shared between the daemons and I don't want to have duplicate copies to maintain. Unless there is a way to have a config file including another one? Maybe there is a way to configure the rolling file so that concurrent access across processes is allowed? This solution still isn't perfect in my opinion because any of the daemons should not be creating the rolling files of some other daemons. Thanks in advance for your help!   Hi, In my WPF application I'm hosting a custom Windows Form User Control together with other wpf controls. My custom user control is hosted in wpf using a WindowsFormsHost control. This custom user control contains (the parent so to speak) other custom win form controls (children controls). The children controls can be single or composite controls. How can I capture the leave event on a child control when the user navigates from the last child user control in the parent custom user control to a wpf user control? According to MSDN (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms751797.aspx) the leave event is not supported in following scenarios: Enter and Leave events are not raised when the following focus changes occur: 1. From inside to outside a WindowsFormsHost control. 2. From outside to inside a WindowsFormsHost control. 3. Outside a WindowsFormsHost control. 4. From a Windows Forms control hosted in a WindowsFormsHost control to an ElementHost control hosted inside the same WindowsFormsHost. Scenario 1 and 2 is exactly what I struggle with.
