• Web-Frameworks for Education Management Systems?

  So, I'm working on an idea and I'll go into a brief overview of that but my question is, What are some good web frameworks for this situation? I have some experience in the following languages: C# Python I have considerably more experience in C# than Python, however I am expecting to learn new things. My idea is this, a completely web-based community-oriented Education Management System that focuses on making students and teachers day-to-day lives easier. For students it will provide a centralized place for them to do homework, study for tests, and reinforce concepts learned previously in class. For teachers it will give them a centralized place to handle assignments, attendance, homework, tests, and all other major parts of classroom management. All of that, but in a community-oriented fashion. Everything a teacher does is shared and open to constructive criticism, allowing other teachers to use their assignments/tests and for students or other teachers to comment, rate and criticize their assignments. This encourages an environment of openness that will allow teacher's to focus on teaching and student's to focus on learning. And that community wouldn't be limited to one school or school-district, this system would be completely school-independent. Please note that I have no problem with hearing constructive criticism on this idea, however I would prefer if this post was more focused on my question. I have somewhat explored about the following options: Django ASP.NET Ruby on Rails Silverlight (1) I have Django installed and I played with it for a little bit, I really like how easy setting up databases are and how it handles the database completely for you. I don't really know how to use it very well and I don't quite understand the Model-View-Controller paradigm(?) for it yet but I haven't thought about it much. I also like the fact that it uses Python. (2) I don't really like Visual Studio for developing in ASP.NET, I hate the way the web-designer works and it just feels clunky and old. I like the server-side development part though. I don't like how expensive ASP.NET and overall Visual Studio is, even if I do get it for free for now using DreamSpark (3) I haven't been able to explore much with this, I could not get Rails (or maybe Ruby) properly installed. I first installed it within RadRails and that didn't work so I uninstalled RadRails and then installed the latest version of Ruby off the official Windows Installer and then installed Ruby on Rails through gem and even after all that it still didn't work, so I installed Netbeans and attempted to use it there but it still did not work (4) I like Silverlight in some extents, I've played with this one the most, it's very similar to WPF (which I've used the most) in a lot of ways but I don't like how database connectivity works, at least in comparison to Django. I also dislike how expensive everything with Microsoft is, even if I get it for free for now with DreamSpark. I would like to hear some suggestions from experienced web-developers as to what I should use and why, or at least what some good options are for my scenario Your help would be very appreciated

• How to read the selected items in an Html.ListBox at postback time

  I have a search page on my MVC site that contains a list of strings that I think the user might wish to search for in my database. This list of strings is available in my model class, so I can populate an Html.ListBox with those strings thus: <%=Html.ListBox("SearchStrings", new SelectList(Model.SearchStrings)) % My problem is, how can I tell which strings the user selected in that list in my postback action? • Ruby on Rails testing: How can I test or at the very least see a form_for's error_messages_for?

  I'm working on creating a tests, and I can't figure out why the creation of a model from a form_for is failing in the test but works in real browsers. Is there a straightforward way for me to see what the problems are in the model creation? Even better would be, is there a straightforward way for me to test the error outputs that I access via error_messages_for? In that case, I'd like to also add in tests that make sure that malformed forms are outputting the correct errors.

  Hello there, I just created this thread to discuss with people who have adopted the smarty system, and how many time it took to you to understand it, because i just can't get the idea, instead of making every easier as everybody says i think it just make more complex to code. More than a problem with only smarty is with the whole MVC model, with CakePHP or KohanaPHP i experience the same problems, u need to do 3x lines of code and files for something that u can do with a few lines of simple php. Maybe u can tell how did u learned to code using MVC model :)

  I have a android app that is communicating with a server (written in java). Between these two parts I have established a Socket connection and want to send data. The problem I am having is that sometimes, for some users, the information that reaches the server is null. • Symfony custom route works with frontend_dev.php but not with index.php

• What considerations should be made for a web app to be released on a cloud hosted system?

  I have a web app that is primarily a WordPress app, but it pulls content from a Django app, simply by calling a service that uses Django models. My understanding of cloud computing is a bit vague. If the site needs to scale up with short notice, does the cloud provider (Amazon, Rackspace, whomever) simply spin up new instances (copies) of my initially configured server? How is state managed between all of them? Are there any good primers on this subject? It's hard to find much out there without getting caught up in the marketing.

• Rails. Putting update logic in your migrations

  A couple of times I've been in the situation where I've wanted to refactor the design of some model and have ended up putting update logic in migrations. However, as far as I've understood, this is not good practice (especially since you are encouraged to use your schema file for deployment, and not your migrations). How do you deal with these kind of problems? To clearify what I mean, say I have a User model. Since I thought there would only be two kinds of users, namely a "normal" user and an administrator, I chose to use a simple boolean field telling whether the user was an adminstrator or not. However, after I while I figured I needed some third kind of user, perhaps a moderator or something similar. In this case I add a UserType model (and the corresponding migration), and a second migration for removing the "admin" flag from the user table. And here comes the problem. In the "add_user_type_to_users" migration I have to map the admin flag value to a user type. Additionally, in order to do this, the user types have to exist, meaning I can not use the seeds file, but rather create the user types in the migration (also considered bad practice). • Struggling with ASP.NET MVC auto-scaffolder template

  I'm trying to write an auto-scaffolder template for Index views. I'd like to be able to pass in a collection of models or view-models (e.g., IQueryable<MyViewModel>) and get back an HTML table that uses the DisplayName attribute for the headings (th elements) and Html.Display(propertyName) for the cells (td elements). Each row should correspond to one item in the collection. So, I'd like to replace var items = (IQueryable<TestProj.ViewModels.TestViewModel>)Model; with var items = (IQueryable<T>)Model; or something to that effect. A property Html is automatically created for me when the view is created, but this HtmlHelper applies to the whole collection. I need to somehow create an itemHtml object that applies just to the current item in the foreach loop. I'm not sure how to do this, however, because the constructors for HtmlHelper don't take a Model object. How do I solve these two problems?

I got this error.. OutputCacheAttribute is not allowed on child actions which are children of an already cached child action. I believe they have a good reason why they need to disallow this. but I really want this kind of nested Output Caching Please, any idea for a workaround?

• Scraping paginated items from a website using scrapy

  I'm using scrapy to scrape items from a site. I'm not being able to implement this scraping pattern. The site I'm trying to scrape is a forum and I scrape the site once a day. Each page has a table containing posts. New posts are added to the top of the table and as more and more posts are posted to the site, the older posts go further into the pages due to pagination. This is a very simple scenario and we will assume that the order of the posts never change. I would like to scrape this site and scrape all the "new" records until the last scraped post from yesterday is encountered. I have configured my spider to paginate endlessly and when it encounters yesterday's last scraped post, it should stop. How can implement this? (My Scrapy installation works with my Django installation using django-dynamic-scraper )
