  • How to create dynamic menulets in OSX

    - by taw
I want to put a dynamically generated icon (not static image) + possibly a tiny bit of text in OSX menu bar. If possible I'd prefer to do it from Ruby or some other convenient scripting language, but I'll deal with Objective C if that's the only way. How do I do that?

  • Is assert evil?

    - by dehmann
The Go language creators write: Go doesn't provide assertions. (...) Programmers use them as a crutch to avoid thinking about proper error handling and reporting. What is your opinion about this?

  • What are the reasons to select Object Oriented Programming over Procedural Programming?

    - by Starx
Nowadays, Standard Coding has become Synonymous to Object Oriented Programming. But what are the reasons that forced classical procedural programming out of the way and rose the new concept of Object Oriented Programming. What were the limitations that Procedural Programming could not accomplish? and Does procedural language still hold some value in the field of programming? If yes, What are they, and What are there advantages over OOP?

  • parallel java libraries

    - by jetru
I'm looking for Java libraries/applications which are parallel and feature objects that can be queried in parallel. That is, there is/are objects in which multiple types of operations can be made from different threads and these will be synchronized. It would be helpful if someone could ideas of where I could find such applications as well. EDIT: Actually, language doesn't matter so much, so C++, Python, anything is welcome

  • Can Visual Studio 2010 Test .net 3.5 SP1 Projects?

    - by Michael Stum
I have some projects in a solution that are running on .net 3.5 SP1 (and can never ever be updated to 4.0 as they are SharePoint projects). When I try to create a new Visual C# Test Project in VS2010 Premium, I have to choose .net 4.0 which is apparently intended. Now I don't care about what my Unit Test project is (don't have to care about VS2008 users), but I do care if I can safely test 3.5 Projects in it due to the different CLRs and slight C# language differences?

  • C++ Win32 API equivalent of CultureInfo.TwoLetterISOLanguageName

    - by Brian Gillespie
The .NET framework makes it easy to get information about various locales; the Win32 C++ APIs are a bit harder to figure out. Is there an equivalent function in Win32 to get the two-letter ISO language name given an integer locale ID? In C# I'd do: System.Globalization.CultureInfo ci = new System.Globalization.CultureInfo(1034); string iso = ci.TwoLetterISOLanguageName; // iso == "es" now.

  • javascript conflict on accesing DOM

    - by justjoe
i read this statement from a book i read The Document Object Model or DOM is really not a part of JavaScript but a separate entity existing outside it. Although you can use JavaScript to manipulate DOM objects, other scripting languages may equally well access them too. what is the best way to avoid conflict between javascript and other client-siede scripting language when we have to deal with XMLHTTPRequest object

  • Financial Charts / Graphs in Ruby or Python

    - by Eric the Red
What are my best options for creating a financial open-high-low-close (OHLC) chart in a high level language like Ruby or Python? While there seem to be a lot of options for graphing, I haven't seen any gems or eggs with this kind of chart. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-high-low-close_chart (but I don't need the moving average or Bollinger bands) JFreeChart can do this in Java, but I'd like to make my codebase as small and simple as possible. Thanks!

  • What features would you like to see removed from C++?

    - by Justin Ethier
This question was inspired by what-features-would-you-like-to-see-added-to-c. anBasically, C++ is a great general-purpose language. But perhaps too general and feature-rich... multiple inheritance, operator overloading, manual memory management, templates, smart pointers, virtual destructors, legacy frameworks (think MFC), and I could just go on. Is there any one feature / aspect of C++ that you would like taken away, to make our lives easier as C++ developers? One feature per answer, please.

  • Why is the ( ) mandatory in the SQL statement select * from gifts INNER JOIN sentgifts using (giftID

    - by Jian Lin
Why is the ( ) mandatory in the SQL statement select * from gifts INNER JOIN sentgifts using (giftID); ? The ( ) usually is for specifying grouping of something. But in this case, are we supposed to be able to use 2 or more field names... in the example above, it can be all clear that it is 1 field, is it just that the parser is not made to bypass the ( ) when it is all clear? (such as in the language Ruby).
