    I found some time over the holidays to finalize the Azure edition of IdentityServer. http://identityserver.codeplex.com/releases/view/81206 The biggest difference to the on-premise version (and earlier Azure betas) is, that by default IdSrv now uses Azure Storage for all data storage (configuration & user data). This means that there is no need anymore for SQL Azure (which is still supported out of the box – just not the default anymore). The download includes a readme file with setup instructions. In a nutshell: Create a new hosted service and upload your certificates Modify the service configuration file in the download to your needs (signing cert, connection strings to storage…) Deploy the package via the portal or other tools Use the new Powershell scripts to add users If you encounter any problem, please give me feedback.

    I am serching for a script (preferably in PHP) or an external solution which lets me create an "url shortener" with advanced reports. We have been using Google Short Links for a while: it works really well, but it lacks reporting (it only displays a counter with the total number of redirects). Our setup is as follows: "go.mydomain.com" points to the web service, and we can create links such as "go.mydomain.com/product1". What I'm looking for is a similar service (or self-hosted solution) but with advanced reports, so we can track redirects by day, month, etc, distinguish between mobile and desktop users (very important!) and so on.

  • Traditional POS is Dead

    Traditional POS is dead -- I've heard that one before. Here's an excerpt from Joe Skorupa's blog over at RIS where he relayed ten trends that were presented at NRF. 7. Mobile POS signals death of traditional POS. Shoppers don't love self-checkout, but they prefer it to long queues or dealing with associates. Fixed POS is expensive and bulky. Mobile POS frees floor space for other purposes and converts associates from being cashiers to being sales assistants that provide new levels of customer service and incremental basket sales. In addition to unplugging the POS, new alternatives are starting to take hold - thin client, POS as a service, and replacing POS software with e-commerce platforms. I'll grant that in some situations for some retailers there might be an opportunity to to ditch the traditional POS, but for the majority of retailers that's just not practical. Take it from a guy that had to wake up at 3am after every Thanksgiving to monitor POS systems across the US on Black Friday. If a retailer's website goes down on Black Friday, they will take a significant hit. If a retailer's chain-wide POS system goes down on Black Friday, that retailer will cease to exist. Mobile POS works great for Apple because the majority of purchases are one or two big-ticket items that don't involve cash. There's still a traditional POS in every store to fall back on (its just hidden). Try this at home: Choose your favorite e-commerce site and add an item to the cart while timing how long it takes. Now multiply that by 15 to represent the 15 items you might buy at store like Target. The user interface isn't optimized for bulk purchases, and that's how it should be. The webstore and POS are designed for different purposes. Self-checkout is a great addition to POS and so is mobile checkout. But they add capabilities to POS, not replace it. Centralized architectures, even those based in the cloud, are quite viable as long as there's resiliency in the registers. You cannot assume perfect access to the network, so a POS must always be able to sell regardless of connectivity. Clearly the different selling channels should be sharing common functionality. Things like calculating tax, accepting coupons, and processing electronic payments can be shared, usually through a service-oriented architecture. This lowers costs and providers greater consistency, both of which help retailers. On paper these technologies look really good and we should continue to push boundaries, but I'm not ready to call the patient dead just yet.

    I'm trying to deploy a Java Application to AWS free tier. I need the following: RDS provider. Using MySQL client S3 service. This is required for the Lucene Index and image uploading SES service. I need to be able to send emails to new registered users. Namecheap is my domain provider. EC2 instance Elastic Beanstalk instance. I managed to create an EC2 instance, upload the WAR file and link it to the Namecheap domain. However I find it difficult to link the other instances to the current application. I find the documentation a little messy and I can't find the right way to do this. Can you provide a simple walk through to deployment for this use case? Thanks!

    I don't have access to company firewall server. but supposedly the port 1720 is open on my one ubuntu server.   • Services or Shared Libraries?

    I work in an environment where we have several different web applications, where each of them have different features but still need to do similar things: authentication, read from common data sources, store common data, etc. Is it better to build the shared functionality into a set of services, to be called by the web apps, or is it better to make a shared library, which the webapps include? The services or libraries would need to access various databases, and it seems like keeping that access in a single place (service) is a good idea. It would also reduce the number of database connections needed. A service would also keep the logic in a single place, but then it could be argued that a shared library can do the same thing. Are there other benefits to be gained from using services over shared libraries?

    Prelude: I develop a cloud service which could be described as dropbox meets torrents and as side effect it enables distribution of arbitrary content via magnet links. Certain amount of magnet links will be displayed on the main website (I will be able to remove them one-by-one or ban users but no more). I will not be able to avoid magnets without complete rework of overall project architecture and either way it will hurt overall performance badly, probably making service meaningless. So my question is, what should I do, to avoid legal problems if my site in a nutshell is just a collection of magnet links? Privacy achieved via end-user encryption, so there is almost no access restrictions on the website. And anyway will help me any? Will hosting in particular country help me?

  • Rendering My Fault Message

    My coworkers setup  a nice way to get the fault messages from our service layer all the way back to the client’s service proxy layer.  This is what I needed to work on this afternoon.  Through a series of trials and errors I finally figured this out.     Hands-on Private Cloud Simulator In One Hour Submitted by: Doan Nguyen, Senior Principal Product Marketing Director My aeronautics instructor used to say, "you can’t appreciate flying until you take flight." To clarify, this is not about gearing up in a flying squirrel suit and hopping off a cliff (topic for another blog!) but rather about flying an airplane. The idea is to get hands-on with the controls at the cockpit and experience flight before you actually fly a real plane. After the initial 40 hours of flight time, the concept sank in and it really made sense.This concept is what inspired our technical experts to put together the hands-on lab for a private cloud deployment and management self-service model. Yes, we are comparing the lab to a flight simulator! Let’s look at the parallels: To get trained to fly, starting in the simulator gets you off the ground quicker. There is no need to have a real plane to begin with. In a hands-on lab, there is no need for a real server, with networking and real storage installed. All you need is your laptop The simulator is pre-configured, pre-flight check done. Similarly, in a hands-on lab, Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Manager are pre-configured and assembled using Oracle VM VirtualBox as the container. Software installations are not needed. After time spent training at the controls, you can really appreciate the practical experience of flying. Along the same lines, the hands-on lab is a guided learning path, without the encumbrances of hardware, software installation, so you can learn about cloud deployment and management.  However, unlike the simulator training, your time investment with the lab is only about an hour and not 40 hours! This hands-on lab takes you through private cloud deployment and management using Oracle VM and  Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c in an Infrastructure as a service IaaS model.
